The Iconic Kumamoto Castle🏯🇯🇵
3 days tourist in Kumamoto 🏯🇯🇵✨⛰️
Sharing to you my experience visiting The Iconic Kumamoto Castle, great 400 year history of this place 🤩
As of 08-16-23 , some parts of the areas in the castle is still on renovation because of the 2016 earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 that sustained heavy damages.
Too many active volcanoes around Kumamoto like the largest active one Mt.Aso , reason why earthquake is often 4x in a month.
There is so much to see in this place , amazing nature everywhere ⛰️🏯

Traveling to Japan: Solo Female Edition with Limited Time.
🇯🇵 Review of Solo Female Travel to Fukuoka for 3 Days and 3 Nights from 21-23 Nov 2022 🛫 Today, I am lucky to have won a round-trip ticket from Bangkok to Fukuoka on ThaiVeitjet at the Nippon Haku 2022 event. This gives me the opportunity to visit Fukuoka again and travel solo once more.
Day 1: BKK - FUK
- Cafe Ne-shigan in Tenjin
- Tenjin Central Park
- Take the Highways Bus to Yufuin
Day 2: - Kinrin Lake
- Yufuin Floral Village
- Take the Highways Bus back to Tenjin
- Tenjin Christmas Market
Day 3: - Nanzoin Temple
- Shofuen Garden
- Hakata Christmas Market
- Canal City Hakata
📸 Since I am traveling alone, I want to take pictures of myself with beautiful views. I don't want to bother others to take my photos and end up with unsatisfactory results. So, I will bring a tripod for my camera.
💍 The important companion for this trip is my remote control ring. It's so convenient and I can take thousands of pictures without worrying about losing it.
👧 As a solo female traveler, Japan is relatively safe, but I still need to take care of myself. I won't stay out too late and will choose safe accommodations. I will also purchase travel insurance.
🗺️ I will research and plan my trip in detail. If I have any questions, I will ask locals for help.
🚄 Lastly, getting lost is normal, right? 😅
💴 Total expenses:
- Airfare: only paid 1530 baht for airport tax due to the voucher I won.
- Accommodation: 2830 baht for 3 nights (1 night at Yufuin Assi and 2 nights at The Breakfast Hotel Tenjin)
- Transportation: 2300 baht
- Food and activities: approximately 12000 baht
- However, including the cost of eating and shopping at the airport, I spent a total of 20000 baht 😂
- I used an IC card for transportation expenses and did not purchase a pass since I only went to Yufuin, which is the farthest destination.
- I took the bus from Tenjin to Yufuin. It costs 3250 yen for one way, but if you buy a round-trip ticket, it will be discounted to 5760 yen. The bus stops at Hakata Station and the airport.

Eat with Locals in Kirishima
We arrived Kirishima late in the evening and wanted to find a place to eat near our hotel. Many restaurants were near closing at 9pm but we were lucky to find Izakaya Mitsunaga which opens until midnight.
From the outside, it seemed to be just a two story Japanese style house and the sign was not too clear from the road. There were a few parking spaces in front of the entrance. Once you walked in, the vibe was totally different. There were a few tables of locals and one large group was having a gathering with lots of food and beer on the table! It was perfect for Friday night!
We ordered fish cake, gyoza, sukiyaki and yakisoba. The portion for the one person sukiyaki was quite big and excellent quality for the price. My favorite was the eggplant gyoza which was crispy and light. The yakisoba was also delicious and filled just the right spots.
The lady who run the izakaya was really kind. While she didn’t speak any English, she did everything she could to make sure we had everything we needed and enjoyed the dinner. She even gave me the remote control to find my preferred tv program!
Izakaya Mitsunaga is the kind of restaurant that I always try to find in all my travels. Meet the locals, enjoy local food!

Museum of Stranger Things?
As I was taking a flight from Kagoshima airport, I made a point to visit the Kirishima Museum which is on route to my hotel. The artworks were not what I expected but definitely interesting to see.
The entrance welcomes you with a large Yayoi Kusama flower in bright colors, and there is a second piece by her after entering the museum. The main museum building holds paintings of surprising subjects which change regularly. There are also many large size art works placed outdoor and you will need to follow the map to look for them - some were hidden in the wood and require a bit of effort to find.
I don’t want to spoil the fun, but it is quite different from all the museums that I have visited. Once you have seen everything, you will understand why it is located there. It will all make sense!
The museum is opened from 9-530pm, and entrance fee is only ¥320 for adults and 230/150 for high school and primary students.
While there is a bus that goes to the museum , it is really easier if you have a car. The road is quite straightforward and the museum is easy to find. There is a cafe at the museum but it closes 30 minutes before actual museum closing. The nearest pizza place closes at 530 also so I would suggest to eat before your visit. #kyushu #Kirishima #museums #japantravel
Arita- Japanese porcelain since 16th century 有田燒
If you are interested in Japanese porcelain and pottery, you must pay a visit to Arita in the western part of Saga prefecture in Kyushu. This is the town where porcelain clay was first found in Japan and craftsmen have been making porcelain here for over 300 years.
While the main streets of the town is lined with shops selling Arita ware, there are a few historic places and museums worth seeing.
My first stop was the Sueyama Shrine just off the main street. The big tori by the entrance is covered with blue and white tiles that are identifiable to Arita porcelain! There are also many large size porcelain vases on the shrine premise which make this shrine different from other shrines in Japan.
Just 10 minutes walk away is the Kyushu Ceramic Museum which is on a small slope. It is quite a large museum and has a big parking just outside. Entrance and parking are both free. There are four main halls and rooms and will need about about hour to see the exhibits. I thought the most interesting piece was the large ceramic clock will sound every 30 minutes with rolling balls and moving figurines going up and down.
Another interesting place to check out is the Arita Porcelain Park which is about 5 minutes drive from the Main Street. It is a big park with a building that follows that of Zwinger Palace in Germany. It is definitely not what you would expect to see in Japan’s countryside. While it is called a porcelain park, there is not much here relating to porcelain other than the Arita Pottery Workshop- where we saw most of the visitors that day. It is free to visit and there is a large souvenir shop and restaurant near the entrance. Since it is so close to the town center, you can definitely make a stop here.
Arita also hosts one of the largest ceramic fair annually in early May during the Golden Week holiday. It is said to attract nearly a million visitors each year.

HafH Fukuoka- The Life- good food and coffee
This cafe is about 7 min walk from Fukuoka’s Gion station, or 10 min from Hakata station.
The cafe is in fact quite big inside, yet very inconspicuous on the outside as the shop name is quite small, and the facade blends in with the building above. We nearly missed it when we walk passed.
We went there for breakfast and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food which were made with intricacy and tasted delicious. The iberico ham in my egg Benedict was made into a rose shape, while the avocado toast had chunky avocado and salmon, layered on a multi grain toast with cream cheese. Most importantly, coffee was up to standard.
The environment was quiet and spacious. Although there were construction outside on the main road, we didn’t hear any of the noise.

Stylish and delicious izakaya in Hakata 虎乃家
We found a really good charcoal grilled yakitori place while walking through the Nishi- Naka su area.
This izakaya is located on a narrow and dim street. The entrance is not wide, but has a large red lantern hanging in the front with the shop name. What attracted us was the shop name - vegetable roll!
We visited at 930 pm on a Monday night and it was still packed with people. The place only has about 30 seats, and we were lucky to be given a table without having to wait.
As with many izakaya, the tables are small and space is tight, but this place has bamboo curtains between the tables which gave some privacy for the customers. There are also a counter of seats facing the cooking area.
The menu has many kinds of yakitori and we specifically ordered their specialty of vegetable yakitori omakase. The vegetable yakitori were rolled up with different meat, such as bacon or sliced pork- and were grilled to perfection - tender and juicy inside and crispy on the outside.
Total bill with drink for 2 was less than ¥6000. What a great place! Definitely recommend this place and try to make reservation in advance.

UNESCO Hidden Christian Sites in Nagasaki
The Oura Church in Nagasaki City is one of the 12 sites related to the history of Christianity in Japan. The group of churches and Christian sites were recognized as a World Heritage Site in 2018.
This particular church is located in the southern part of Nagasaki City, while some of the other in the list are located in other parts of the Nagasaki Prefecture. To get to the Oura Church, it is possible to walk 15-20 min from city center. The area is in fact part of the Foreign Settlement area of Nagasaki in the 19th century. Therefore you can also visit Glover Garden and Chinese Confucius Shrine nearby.
The Church was built by French missionaries in 1864 and is the oldest church in Japan. It was also designated as a National treasure in 1933 by the Japanese Government.
Entrance fee is ¥1000 for adult and 400 for high school students which I thought was a little expensive. Aside the main church, you can also visit the Christian Museum next to it. It will take about 30 -45 minutes to visit the entire premise.

Japan’s 3 best night view at Mount Inasa
Mount Inasa indeed captures the best view of Nagasaki City from above. It is just a short 10 minutes drive up the curvy road in the western part of the city.
There are several ways to reach the observatory, including ropeway (1250 yen round trip), bus and of course by car . If you drive, parking spaces are available at the summit.
Once at the top, go up to the rooftop of the observatory building for a 360 degrees view. The west side faces the ocean and is absolutely stunning at sunset. The other side overlooks Nagasaki City on the two sides of the Uragami River.
The observatory building also has a couple of fast food restaurants for light snacks and drinks.
This is definitely a must go place in Nagasaki!

Impressive Yutoku Inari Shrine in Kyushu
The Yutoku Inari Shrine 佑德稻荷神社 is located in Kashima City in Kyushu, Japan. It takes about 1.5 hours to drive from Fukuoka, or about 2 hours by train. It is considered one of the top 3 most important Inari shrines in Japan.
The shrine is impressively built against the hillside, and you will need to walk about 100 steps up the staircase to reach the beautiful main hall. An elevator has also been built in recent years, but will cost ¥300 per trip. The view from the top is beautiful and there is a long row of tori in the hillside behind the hall.
There is also a small Japanese garden near the front entrance with many Sakura trees. This shrine is definitely worth visiting if on the way south toward Nagasaki or to enjoy Takeo or Ureshino Onsen which are 30 minutes away.

Hiking through the trail of Yakushima Island
Yakushima Island is about 60km south of Kagoshima city in Kyushu , Japan. It can be reached by ferry from Kagoshima, or by plane from Kagoshima, Fukuoka, or Osaka ( about one hour).
Yakushima gained UNESCO world heritage status in 1993 and is known for its natural beauty, including wildlife and cedar forests. Some of the cedars are over 1000 years old, with diameter of 7-8meters. A few animals are also unique to the island - including the Yaku Monkey and the Yaku deer. We were so lucky to have seen both of them at the end of our trekking.
To get to the main trail at Shiratani Unsuikyu, take the bus from the main port of Miyanoura. The fare costs 560 yen one way and only takes 25 minutes uphill. The buses do not run frequently, so renting a car may be a better option if you want to see more of the island within a short time (1-2 days).
It takes 3-5 hours to complete the trails at Shiratani, so it is best to start in the early morning. We arrived the island by plane at 11am, and barely made it to the 1pm bus. The last bus that returns to Miyanoura leaves at 4:10pm. So you will have about three hours for the hike.
We were lucky to have a cool and dry day, which helped us to complete the trail and see the cedar, moss forest , and the animals on this trip!

Uminonakamichi Seaside Park 海の中道海濱公園
This is quite a large park located in the northern side of Fukuoka city. It takes just under 1 hour by subway from Hakata Station, toward Saitozaki station 西戶崎,with transit at Kashii. You should then get off at the 海の海公園station. This station will lead you directly into the park entrance within 2-3 minutes walk so it is more convenient than the Saitozaki station.
Entry ticket for adult is 450 yen while high school students and younger is free. The park is really huge and is situated on a peninsula, with the north and south side being the sea.
Once you have bought the ticket, go to the the bicycle rental and get the 3 hours (500yen) or one day (700yen) ticket. The park is so big that riding a bike is much faster and enjoyable. The bicycle lanes are wide and clearly marked. I can I may that it could be very hot in the summer so do bring your hat. There are even bicycles for 2 or children’s bikes. If you plan to see all parts of the park, including aquarium, zoo, flower park, and all the observatories, then the one day pass is better. However if you only want to see certain parts, then I think 3 hours is enough.
I went in early March, and the weather was around 15-20 degrees. only some parts of the flower garden had flowers. The rose garden was empty , and the flower hill didn’t have anything spectacular. I also went to the zoo, but it is really for children- with monkeys, some lazy kangaroo, sheep… along with a few other small animals.
It was a surprise to me that there were only two places with restaurants in such a big park. Therefore if you plan to stay long, it is better to bring some lunch.
I would recommend going to this park in the right month when the flowers are blooming - ie April/ May. Do check the website in advance.

The city guardian temple - Kushida Shrine
The Kushida Shrine is one of the most important shrine in Fukuoka. It is said to be built in 757 AD, and is centrally located near Gion station.
There are many things to see within the complex. For example, the architecture of the building is beautiful on the outer gate and inner court. The huge Ginko trees ( best to see in Dec when the leaves turns totally yellow- ), the beautifully decorated float for the Hakata Gion Yamakasa, the well with the three cranes which is said to grant longevity, just to name a few.
The best time to visit is early morning as the sun is directly on the building for taking good photos. It also opens beyond 9pm and is well lit too. Many locals would drop by for their prayers.
Definitely not to be missed.

fantastic view of Nagasaki from Glover Garden
Glover Garden was built for Scottish merchant Thomas Glover, who lived and helped in the industrialization of Japan in the late 19th century. Glover was involved in many businesses including ship building, coal mining, and beer brewing. The houses in the garden are the oldest western - style houses in Japan. They sit on top of the hill and has a beautiful view of the city and the harbor. Japanese garden lovers get closer in Fukuoka
Very happy to be on vacation to Japan, in the midst of an international meeting in Fukuoka, we had the opportunity knowing and exploring many interest things in Fukuoka, not only the food which is very- very delicious, but the main place that is a pity to miss, namely the Dazaifu Shrine. The place is very beautiful, the garden arrangement is very cool to look at, also it's very comfortable to linger here. The sound of birds chimed in accompanied by the gurgling of water and the leaves rubbing against each other. Very peaceful. I want to repeat my vacation here #vacation #japantravel #fukuoka #kyushu

Hidden Gem in Oita - Ryusho Falls
Adventurous walk to this small hidden waterfall in Oita Prefecture. You walk pass a path between two ordinary houses and you see a huge wheat farmland.
Following the route and walk down the humid and slippery staircases you will hear the sound of the waterfall, but yet, where is the waterfall? There’s a very dark tree hole in front of you. You don’t need to crawl over but just lower your body a bit to pass through it. After that, the humongous falls are in front of you. The sound, the ambiance… it is quite fearsome!!
We stayed there for 20min and just bumped into one person so this is really a hidden gem that not known by many visitors.

A visit to beautify Takeo Onsen
Takeo Onsen Town is about 1 hour drive or train ride away from Fukuoka. We made it our first stop after arriving Kyushu.
Takeo is not a typical onsen town with bridges and Japanese style houses. In fact the town looks modern yet beautiful with wide streets. We parked our car next to the train station and visited the Saga wagyu beef bento shop. As it was already 4pm when we arrived, all of the bento except the sukiyaki beef was left. We bought one and enjoyed it with their coffee and cheese cake! The bento was smaller than expected, but was quite tasty.
The famous Takeo Onsen is about 10 minutes walk from the station and is situated at the end of a quiet street amongst hotels. The spring is supposed to have the curing effects for arthritis and helps to improve indigestion!
Walking thru the streets of Takeo was quite pleasant. There were flowers on the street sides, and many paintings on buildings. Other popular sights in Takeo include the Takeo Shrine and the stylish Takeo Public Library which is also a cafe!
We spent about 4 hours strolling around before moving on to our next onsen- Ureshino.

Cherry blossom at sunset in Fukuoka in March
While most of the cherry blossom forecast predicted March 16/17 to be the date for first bloom in Fukuoka, when I visited Maizuru Park on March6, at least 50% of the Sakura were already in full bloom.
The Sakura trees are just under the castle ruin wall so it is quite pretty and great for taking photo. At sunset, the view is particularly beautiful and you can catch the right shot with Sakura and the orange sky.
In addition to the Sakura, there were also narcissus under the trees so all in all it is a great place to see cherry blossom in the city.

Excellent Ramen in Nagasaki
Hiiragi Ramen Shop is centrally located in Dozo, Nagasaki It is easily accessible on foot from the Nagasaki Chinatown by 5 min. I passed by it a few times during my two days stay in Nagasaki and there was always a long line of people . I finally went in at 3pm to give it a try.
There are 4 types of ramen to choose from, plus a few rice bowls and snacks such as gyoza.
We ordered the dan dan noodle and the Aosa ramen (seaweed soup ). The dan dan is spicy and flavorful, while the seaweed ramen was quite new to me. The soup is full of small pieces of seaweed, and some even melted into the soup. It was really excellent and has all the seaweed flavor in your mouth as you slurp up the noodles. The gyoza was also crispy and juicy!
The noodle portion was quite big, but if it is not enough, you can always add the extra portion of noodle or get a nigiri ( rice ball) to soak up the soup. Many of the teenage boys around me were all eating this way!
The shop is opened until 3am on weekdays and 5am on weekends. I would highly recommend anyone visiting Nagasaki to give it a try!
