Taihe travel guide and discussion

Jian is great but I won’t go again|A heartfelt, no-nonsense guide to avoid pitfalls😭 Just got back from Jian and after much thought, I want to share my honest take on this small city! First, the truth: Jian is really beautiful, rich in culture, warm and inviting. The ancient charm of Luling and the natural scenery are truly healing. It’s not a trendy, mass-produced city; everywhere you go, there’s an authentic, peaceful beauty. But honestly, I won’t rush back! It’s not that the scenery is bad, but this trip had too many hidden pitfalls and issues! I’ve put together a comprehensive real travel experience plus a detailed guide to avoid traps. If you’re planning to visit Jian, you must read this to avoid blind travel and save yourself a lot of trouble! 🌿 First, the praise! Jian’s healing moments worth the trip Objectively, Jian’s scenery and local vibe are definitely worth recognizing and were the main reasons I was so excited about it! ✨ Luling cultural ecological park This is truly Jian’s city card! A huge free ecological park with no over-commercialization, shaded by green trees and clear lakes, the atmosphere is amazing. The night tour exceeded expectations. The 5.5 km light and shadow boat ride is stunning, with the nine-dragon lanterns and phoenix water curtain light show creating an immersive experience. The evening breeze and the immersive feeling of Luling’s prosperous night scene are unforgettable. Tickets start at 39 RMB, great value. Perfect for a slow-paced stroll and photo ops. ✨ Jizhou kiln scenic area The heritage of this thousand-year-old kiln is undeniable! Ancient blue bricks, old alleys, and historic buildings create a vintage atmosphere everywhere. Every photo looks like a classic ancient-style shot. You can try pottery making yourself and immerse in intangible cultural heritage. It’s niche but meaningful, ideal for those who love cultural sites and quiet photography. ✨ Authentic old town streets Avoid the trendy commercial areas and explore Jian’s old town, full of everyday local life. Old streets, shops, and street vendors hide the most authentic Gan-style local flavor. Take your time eating and wandering, soaking in the slow pace of small-town life, healing and relaxing. ✨ Genuine local food Jian’s food is truly amazing! Affordable, generous portions, and authentic flavors with no risk of disappointment. You must try Jian fried rice noodles, stir-fried with bean sprouts and eggs, full of wok hei and so delicious you’ll finish every bite. The refreshing clay pot soup is warming and authentic, a local breakfast staple. Also try Taihe black-bone chicken stew and local specialty dishes, all original Gan flavors. Fans of Jiangxi cuisine will fall in love. ❌ Major warnings! Fatal pitfalls on this trip The scenery is flawless, but the travel experience really suffered. These hidden traps can easily ruin your mood! 1️⃣ Extreme weather torture, travel is a gamble Don’t visit Jian barehanded in June or July! It’s truly the plum rain season plus scorching heat, making the experience terrible! The plum rain season brings unpredictable weather. The forecast is unreliable—one moment it’s clear, the next a sudden storm hits. Especially in Jinggangshan and mountain scenic spots, heavy rain shuts down cable cars, skywalks, and hiking trails. Driving miles into the mountains only to turn back wastes time and money. Plus, summer heat in Jian is unbearable, with city temperatures often 35℃–40℃ and very humid. You’ll sweat just standing still. Many think Jinggangshan is cooler, but that’s wrong! Daytime temps there are also 30℃+, with full sun exposure while hiking. You’ll sweat and feel sticky within minutes. The combination of heat and uphill hiking is exhausting and frustrating, leaving no energy to enjoy the views. 2️⃣ Attractions are extremely spread out, transportation is a major hassle This is Jian’s biggest tourism flaw!! All key spots are very far apart—city center, Jizhou kiln, Jinggangshan, and various ancient villages. There’s no convenient public transport between them. Shuttle buses have long lines in peak season, few runs, and long waits, wasting time and energy. Avoid cheap roadside tour groups—they have hidden fees, rushed schedules, and poor experiences. Independent travel means relying on car rentals or taxis, which doubles costs. Driving yourself is the only somewhat comfortable option, but mountain roads are tricky and challenging for new drivers. If you only have 2–3 days, most of your time will be spent traveling, with little time left for sightseeing. The pace is exhausting! 3️⃣ Many hidden fees and traps, hard to avoid ① Jizhou kiln trap: Vendors around the scenic area sell overpriced fake antique ceramics and Tianmu cups, many are chemically glazed fakes, not authentic heritage ceramics. Prices are inflated, don’t buy! Also, check pottery experience prices carefully. Basic fees and firing fees are charged separately. Without clear communication, you may get hit with extra charges. ② Food trap: Avoid Yongxin dog meat and specialty Gan restaurants near the scenic area! They’re expensive, small portions, and not authentic—just tourist traps. For genuine food, head straight to Yangming East Road. After 6 PM, it’s full of local favorite stalls and old shops, affordable and authentic with no risk. ③ Entertainment trap: Don’t take kids to the popular ice and snow city! The ice surface is uneven, edges are sharp with no protection, making it very dangerous. Injuries are common, and the operator’s after-sales service is cold and unhelpful, with no accountability. 4️⃣ Extreme spicy food, hard to get by without spice Jian’s cuisine is heavily spicy Gan style. Almost all local dishes are spicy with no mild option, default is very hot! I can handle mild spice but on day one, the Taihe black-bone chicken stew with green peppers gave me stomach pain and diarrhea. If you don’t eat spicy, have sensitive digestion, or are elderly or a child, eating here is really tough! Important reminder: Always emphasize “no spice at all” when ordering, even for vegetables and soups. They usually add chili by default. Don’t take chances! 5️⃣ Some popular attractions close in peak season, plans easily ruined Many trendy summer attractions temporarily close, like Shushui River rafting and Nanmu Forest rafting. Many come just for rafting but find it closed, ruining their itinerary and wasting planning. ✅ Honest advice: how to enjoy Jian without regrets Despite many issues, if you pick the right season and plan well, it’s still worth visiting. Here’s a guide to avoid pitfalls! 🌞 Best travel time Choose September–November or March–April! Spring and fall have cool weather, little rain, and clear skies. Whether exploring city streets, hiking Jinggangshan, or visiting ancient villages, comfort and photo opportunities are excellent. Avoid June–August heat and plum rain season, and December–February cold winter. 🚗 Travel options 1. Prioritize driving yourself: the best solution for spread-out attractions, flexible and no waiting or detours 2. For two or more people, book a private car: better value than taxis, hassle-free, perfect for those who want convenience 3. Avoid cheap roadside tours and unlicensed drivers to prevent being overcharged 🍜 How to enjoy the food right 1. Must-try dishes: Jian fried rice noodles, clay pot soup, Taihe black-bone chicken, rice cakes 2. Where to eat: Yangming East Road night market, old town community shops, avoid all scenic area restaurants 3. Dietary notes: no spice, less salt, confirm repeatedly with the owner 📍 3-day 2-night streamlined itinerary without pitfalls Day 1: Luling cultural ecological park (night light show) → old town streets for food → local late-night snacks Day 2: Jizhou kiln scenic area (pottery experience + ancient street photos) → local old shop for authentic Gan food Day 3: Leisurely visit a small ancient village → return trip (skip rushing to Jinggangshan to avoid exhaustion) 💡 Final honest words Jian is a small city best suited for slow, relaxed travel, not fast-paced tourism. Its beauty lies in everyday life, ancient charm, and natural scenery, without the noise and commercialization of trendy cities. It’s quiet and healing. But if you’re on a short trip, want efficient sightseeing, dislike heat or fatigue, or can’t eat spicy food, you’re likely to be disappointed. It’s not that Jian is bad, it just doesn’t fit everyone! With good planning and the right season, you can truly appreciate the gentle charm of this ancient Luling city✨

Let's start with a couple of lines: What's the worst thing about traveling during the National Day holiday? The fear of spending a fortune to see the back of your head 😭 Popular city flights and hotels double in price, scenic spots require two hours of queuing for five minutes of photos, and the return trip is more tiring than going to work. But off-the-beaten-path doesn't mean settling. Choose the right small town, and for just a few hundred yuan, you can have an entire cobblestone alley, a whole tea plantation, or an entire ancient village all to yourself while everyone else is scrambling for space. These four small towns are ridiculously off-the-beaten-path, so quiet you can hear your own footsteps, and incredibly cheap. They're directly accessible by high-speed rail, perfect for students and working professionals alike 👇 1️⃣ Songyang, Zhejiang | The Last Jiangnan Hidden Gem, a Golden Ancient Village Amidst the Fragrance of Tea 🍵 📍Lishui, Zhejiang Why choose it? Acclaimed by *Chinese National Geography* as the "Last Jiangnan Hidden Gem," it sees far fewer tourists than Wuzhen and Xitang during the National Day holiday. The mountains are shrouded in mist, and the air is filled with the fresh scent of tea and vegetation. Most of the core ancient villages are free to enter, and the pace of life is so slow it feels like time has stopped. 🚄 Transportation: A 1.5-hour high-speed train ride from Hangzhou East Station directly to Songyang Station. From there, a 10-minute taxi ride to the county town. The ancient villages are scattered, so hiring a car or driving yourself is recommended. Be careful of the winding mountain roads and slow down. 🏠 Accommodation: Hotels in the old town's main street cost 140-200 yuan per night, right next to a century-old street with its vibrant atmosphere. For a sea of clouds view, stay at a guesthouse in Chenjiapu Village; it's more expensive but offers a superior experience. 🍖 Must-Try: Baixian Noodle Restaurant's fermented rice and pork intestine noodles cost around 15 yuan per person, a local specialty; the braised salt-baked chicken has crispy skin and tender, savory meat; Songyang thin pancakes, ash-water cakes, and Qingming cakes are flavors locals have enjoyed since childhood. A meal can be had for 30-50 yuan per person. 🎯 Must-Do: Day 1: Stroll through Songyang Old Street and sample local snacks. In the evening, visit Yangjiatang Village, where ancient, earthen-yellow houses are layered upon each other, known as the "Golden Potala Palace" at sunset. The best time for photos is 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM. Day 2: In the morning, visit Chenjiapu Village, an ancient village perched on a cliff. Check out the Pioneer Bookstore and stroll along the cliffside walkway to breathe in the fresh air. In the afternoon, cycle through the Damushan Tea Garden, where the endless tea fields are filled with the aroma of tea. Day 3: Wake up naturally and explore lesser-known ancient villages like Songzhuang Village and Youtian Village. Return home in the afternoon. 💰 Budget: 600-800 RMB per person for 3 days and 2 nights (excluding round-trip transportation). Ancient villages are mostly free; the main expenses are for transportation and food. 2️⃣ Fujian Taining | World Heritage-level Water Danxia Landform, much quieter than Wuyishan 🏞️ 📍Fujian·Sanming Why choose it? Boasting both World Natural Heritage status and World Geopark designation, Taining receives far fewer tourists than Wuyishan and Zhangjiajie during the National Day holiday. The Danxia landforms on the water at Dajin Lake are so tranquil you can hear your own breath; Ganlu Rock Temple is perched precariously on the cliff face, supported by a single pillar; guesthouses in the ancient town cost just over 100 yuan; and the local farm-style cuisine is surprisingly affordable. 🚄 Transportation: Take the high-speed train from Fuzhou or Nanchang to Taining Station (1.5-2 hours). From there, it's a 15-minute taxi ride to the ancient town. ⚠️ Don't mistakenly book tickets to Taihe or Taishun. The scenic areas are spread out, so carpooling or ride-hailing services are recommended. 🏠 Accommodation: Prioritize guesthouses within Taining Ancient Town (100-200 yuan/night). They offer convenient access to restaurants and are perfect for evening strolls around the ancient town. 🍖 Must-Eat: Dajin Lake organic fish, prepared two ways – the milky white fish head soup is fresh and delicious; Jade Rolls and Warm Mushroom Buns are Hakka specialties with mugwort wrappers; Youjiang Tofu is an intangible cultural heritage food, tender and flavorful. A comfortable meal costs 40-60 RMB per person. 🎯 Must-Do: Day 1: Afternoon: Take a boat tour of Danxia landforms on Dajin Lake (approximately 3.5 hours), visit Ganlu Rock Temple (a "pillar-piercing" suspended temple on the water), and explore Taining Ancient City in the evening. Day 2: Morning: Hike through Zhaixia Grand Canyon, featuring Tianqiong Rock and Tongtian Cave – easy and shady; Afternoon: Bamboo rafting on Shangqingxi River, exploring the Ninety-Nine Bends Canyon for over an hour amidst green mountains and clear waters. 💰 Budget: 3 days 2 nights, 600-800 RMB per person (excluding round-trip transportation). The main expenses are Dajin Lake package ticket (163 RMB), Zhaixia Grand Canyon (55 RMB), and Shangqingxi bamboo rafting (125 RMB). 3️⃣ Weishan, Yunnan | A Thousand-Year-Old City Ten Times Quieter Than Dali🏯 📍Yunnan·Dali Why choose it? The birthplace of the Nanzhao Kingdom, a truly living ancient city. During the National Day holiday, there are ridiculously few tourists; the ancient city is full of locals living their lives. There are no mass-produced trendy shops, and no exorbitant prices. Prices are so low that a bowl of braised pork rice noodles costs only 8 yuan, and a single noodle costs 10 yuan—enough to fill you up. 🚄 Transportation: A 2.5-hour high-speed train from Kunming to Weishan Station. From there, take a 2-yuan sightseeing bus into the ancient city (about 10 minutes). From Dali, the high-speed train takes only 22 minutes, with a second-class seat costing 21 yuan. 🏠 Accommodation: Guesthouses converted from Ming Dynasty houses within the ancient city cost 120-200 yuan per night. Open your window to see the lights of ancient buildings, and step outside to find a food street. Staying within the ancient city is highly recommended; you won't have to rush when exploring at night. 🍖 Must-Try: Lao Wang Guojiang Ersi (Old Wang Crossing the River Rice Noodles) is a breakfast staple, made with pork bone broth simmered for 3 hours, 8 yuan a bowl; Yigenmian (One-Strand Noodle) is unique to Weishan, 10 yuan a serving until you're stuffed; handmade candied fruit 10 yuan a bag, green bean cakes, milk fan, and sachima are local favorites that people have enjoyed since childhood. You can eat your fill for 20-30 yuan per person. 🎯 Must-Do: Day 1: Arrive in Weishan in the afternoon, visit Gongchen Tower and Xinggong Tower, and in the evening, watch the elderly play chess and drink tea at Mengyang Park, experiencing the authentic local atmosphere; Day 2: Climb Weibao Mountain in the morning (Changchun Cave, Qingxia Palace), and in the afternoon, visit Donglianhua Village to see the ancient Hui architecture and stroll leisurely along the stone steps; Day 3: Wake up early for a bowl of Lao Wang Guojiang Ersi, browse the local market for handmade candied fruit, and return home in the afternoon. 💰 Budget: 500-700 yuan per person for 3 days and 2 nights (excluding round-trip transportation). Entry to the ancient city is free; the main expenses are accommodation and food. 4️⃣ Jianshui, Yunnan | A Slow-Paced Ancient City in Southern Yunnan, Enjoy Life Amidst the Aroma of Tofu 🥟 📍Yunnan·Honghe Why choose it? A 2-hour high-speed train ride from Kunming, free entry to the ancient city, and all-you-can-eat meals for around 20-30 RMB per person. The whole city feels more like a vacation in a friend's hometown than a tourist destination. Locals sing, dance, and play cards under the city walls every day, and the abundance of trees makes even a midday stroll feel like being in an air-conditioned room. 🚄 Transportation: A 2-hour high-speed train ride from Kunming South Station to Jianshui Station, costing 80-100 RMB. From the station, take bus 919 or a taxi for 15 RMB to the ancient city. The entire ancient city can be explored on foot. 🏠 Accommodation: Guesthouses within the ancient city cost 70-150 RMB per night. Staying in a ground-floor room avoids climbing stairs, and the ancient street is right outside the door, allowing you to rest whenever you're tired. 🍖 Must-Try: Jianshui grilled tofu is the soul of the dish. Grilled over charcoal until puffed up, dipped in chili powder, it's bite-sized, 5 yuan a serving; Grass sprout rice noodles 15 yuan a bowl, the broth is fresh and the ingredients are plentiful; Steamed chicken in a clay pot, roasted tofu, and the old Lin'an steamed chicken in a clay pot—the chicken is incredibly tender. You can eat your fill for 30-40 yuan per person. 🎯 Must-Do: Day 1: Jianshui Ancient City → Chaoyang Tower (15 yuan) → Zhu Family Garden → Examination Hall of the Provincial Education Commissioner → Watch locals draw water at Daban Well; Day 2: Morning: Tuanshan Folk Houses → Xianghui Bridge → Shuanglong Bridge to watch the sunset. The reflection of the Seventeen-Arch Bridge in the water is the most classic scene in Jianshui; Day 3: Zitao Street Night Market for grilled tofu, take the narrow-gauge train (80 yuan one way) passing Shuanglong Bridge and Xianghui Bridge—the pastoral scenery is amazing! Return in the afternoon. 💰 Budget: 500-700 RMB per person for 3 days and 2 nights (excluding round-trip transportation). Entry to the ancient town is free; the main expenses are food and accommodation. 📌 General Tips for Short Stays 1. Book accommodation in advance. In small towns, guesthouses are limited during the National Day holiday; booking at least a week in advance will secure good prices, as options become scarce later. 2. Carry your student ID. Discounts are available at places like Taining Shangshu Mansion, Jianshui Confucian Temple, and Zhu Family Garden; every little bit helps! 🎫 3. Explore the alleyways for food. Restaurants near the scenic area entrance generally overcharge; explore a few more alleys for more authentic flavors. 4. Wear flat, soft-soled shoes in the ancient town. Walking on cobblestone streets all day will wear out your feet in hard-soled shoes. 5. Don't join a local tour group. The attractions in these small towns are concentrated; exploring freely is the best way to experience them. 6. Early rising is key. The small town was deserted in the early morning; the Drum Tower, ancient bridges, and alleyways were at their most beautiful shrouded in mist. Finally, a heartfelt word: You don't necessarily have to fight your way through the crowds in popular tourist cities during the National Day holiday. The sunset painting the earthen walls of Yangjiatang in Songyang with gold, the Danxia landforms and emerald waters of Dajin Lake in Taining, the "one-strand noodles" of Weishan Ancient City, the grilled tofu on charcoal in Jianshui—these places don't cost much, but they allow you to truly slow down. The joy of a short stay isn't about how many places you visit, but about staying in one place until you're satisfied and don't want to leave. Save this and share it with your travel buddies, let's go for it this National Day! A quick note: What's the worst thing about traveling during the National Day holiday? The oversized window design allowed us to sip tea while admiring the beautiful scenery outside—the sense of relaxation is truly indescribable. 🍵 🍲 Signature Kung Fu soup, warming the stomach and the heart 🥣 At breakfast, that steaming bowl of Silkie Chicken Soup Commander signature Kung Fu soup was truly unforgettable. The broth was clear and delicious, and every sip was full of nutrition and warmth. In addition to the Silkie chicken soup, there was a rich selection of breakfast options, whether Chinese or Western, to satisfy different tastes. 🍳 🏊‍♀️ International standard swimming pool for worry-free swimming 💦 In the afternoon, we changed into our swimwear and headed to the hotel's international standard pool. The water was crystal clear, and the surrounding environment was elegant and quiet—a great place to relax. Although Gira can't swim, it played happily on the lawn by the pool. Seeing it so happy made my mood brighten up too. 🌞 🌳 Nearby attractions to explore 🌲 There are many attractions worth visiting around the hotel, such as Dangui Square, which not only has a beautiful environment but also many local delicacies and handicrafts. When tired from walking, you can sit on a bench in the square and enjoy a quiet moment. Plus, it's very convenient to travel from the hotel to either Taihe Station or Ji'an Station. The easy transportation added even more possibilities to our trip. 🛤️ This trip to Taihe and the stay at the Silkie Chicken Soup Commander themed hotel left a deep impression on us. It wasn't just because of the high-quality service and comfortable environment, but more importantly, because every guest—including our little pet—could find their own happy moments here. 💖

The Xia family of Dawan migrated from E'jingqiu, Taihe County, Jiangxi Province to Dazishan Village, Beixiang, Guiyang Prefecture (i.e., Dawan Village) in 1348 (the eighth year of the Zhizheng era of the Yuan Dynasty), a history spanning 678 years. Since the Ming Dynasty, the family has flourished, producing numerous scholars and officials, including the father-son duo Xia Guohan and Xia Jiugeng, who were both successful candidates in the imperial examinations; and the father-son duo Xia Shi and Xia Shoutian, who were both governors and second-place scholars in the imperial examinations during the Qing Dynasty. As many as 37 of their members held officials of the fifth rank or higher. The entire village covers an area of 2 square kilometers and is shaped like the Chinese character "一" (one). A main street runs from west to east, paved with bluestone, with side alleys connected to the main street by stone slabs. More than 100 ancient Ming and Qing dynasty buildings are scattered along both sides, preserving the Hakka folk customs of Jiangnan. Among the more than 100 existing Ming and Qing dynasty buildings in the village, the "Bangyan Di" (former residence of Xia Shi and Xia Shoutian) is a five-courtyard siheyuan (traditional courtyard house) with a building area of 2276 square meters, a unique and typical architectural style in southern Hunan. It is listed as a key cultural relic protection unit of Hunan Province, along with the Xia Clan Ancestral Hall and the ancient stage. It is also among the second batch of traditional Chinese villages. Egret Isle Academy and the ancient island in the river are open all day for free. A bowl of Ji'an fried noodles costs 10 yuan, full of wok flavor and freshness. Amy fruit and thin crispy cakes satisfy cravings for just a few yuan. Gougunao tea and Anfu ham specialties can be bought at the old town market for prices far below tourist shops. I used to chase tourist hotspot restaurants, but after five days rooted in old town alleys and shops, food expenses were cut in half😋 🚌🚏【Money-saving tips for food, lodging, and travel to avoid tourist price traps】 Choose budget hotels in Ji'an city’s Jizhou district, about 130 yuan per night, within walking distance to Gan River ancient street. Jiangxi’s counties hold a charm more captivating than tourist spots. These four “king-level” counties will show you what it means to truly win after visiting just two — stunning scenery, rich culture, and delicious food all come together. Detailed guides included. Highly recommended to save. --- 1. Shangrao · Wuyuan (homes drying crops in the sun, a dream hometown) Even if some say it’s commercialized, Wuyuan remains the face of Jiangxi’s counties. Its beauty shines through all four seasons: rapeseed flowers in spring, water play in summer, crop drying in autumn, and snow viewing in winter. · Must-do experiences: Huangling (stay overnight for the night light show), Shicheng (shoot morning mist and smoke at 5 AM), Likeng (small bridges and flowing water homes). · Off-the-beaten-path: Avoid crowds and visit Chaguan Village to photograph old farmers leading cattle, or Hongguan Village to see thousand-year-old camphor trees — free and photogenic. · Food highlights: Qigao (a must-have breakfast), fermented tofu, and red carp in lotus leaf. Avoid main street tourist spots; head to Wuyuan county’s “Wengong North Road” food stall street. · Transportation: High-speed rail directly to “Wuyuan Station.” Taxi or car rental from the station is most convenient. · -- 2. Jingdezhen · Fuliang (the source of porcelain, tea hometown) Strictly speaking, Fuliang is a county but seamlessly connected to Jingdezhen city. This is the original place from Bai Juyi’s poem “Last month I went to Fuliang to buy tea,” quieter and more artistic than the city center. · Must-do experiences: Hanxi Village (site of the Land Art Festival, a roofless art museum in tea gardens), Yaoli Ancient Town (more pristine than Wuyuan, crystal-clear water, free entry), Dongbu Wharf (ancient porcelain transport starting point, almost no tourists). · Essential experience: Skip the crowded Taoxichuan and explore Fuliang county’s ancient county government office, see the Red Tower, and feel the atmosphere of a thousand-year-old official building. · Food highlights: Alkaline rice cake (stir-fried is amazing), cold noodles, and bitter acorn tofu. Be sure to drink local Fuliang black tea, which has a long-lasting sweet aftertaste. · Transportation: High-speed rail to “Jingdezhen North Station.” Taxi to Fuliang county takes only 15 minutes. · -- 3. Ji’an · Taihe (hometown of black-bone chicken, Kuai Pavilion legends) Extremely off the radar but rich in heritage. Famous for Huang Tingjian’s “Kuai Pavilion” and “Taihe black-bone chicken,” the foot of Wushan Mountain is the origin of black-bone chicken. · Must-do experiences: Kuai Pavilion (climb the tower for distant views and read Huang Tingjian’s poems), Shukouzhou (a thousand-year-old village in the Gan River with ancient camphor trees providing dense shade), Chatanpi (ancient water conservancy project and a great summer water spot). · Essential experience: Early morning visit to Taihe market to watch locals stew black-bone chicken in clay pots; at dusk, watch the sunset by the Gan River and try softshell turtle. · Food highlights: Taihe black-bone chicken soup (must have the original breed, clear broth with fresh flavor), pig’s blood at Qiaotou, and stir-fried snails. Most old shops are on “Gongnongbing Avenue” in the county. · Transportation: High-speed rail directly to “Taihe Station.” Bus or taxi from the station. · -- 4. Ganzhou · Longnan (capital of Hakka walled villages, Hakka secret realm) Home to 376 Hakka walled villages, it’s the true “ancient Rome of the East,” more original and wild than Fujian’s tulou. · Must-do experiences: Guanxi Xinwei (largest scale, like a small castle), Yanyiwei (tallest walled village, four stories tall and impressive), Wushiwei (round walled village with stunning reflections). · Essential experience: Don’t stay in the county town; stay in a walled village guesthouse (like “Qi Yishu”), watch the stars at night; during the day, visit Taiping Bridge to photograph the ancient bridge and flowing water. · Food highlights: Hakka stuffed tofu (generous filling), phoenix eye pearl soup, and hot rice noodles (breakfast). Eat your way through the “Longgui Road” night market in the county. · Transportation: High-speed rail directly to “Longnan East Station.” Car rental is recommended as the walled villages are spread across towns. · -- Ultimate comparison (choose your destination) County Suitable for Best season Recommended days Wuyuan Photographers, first-timers Mar–Apr or Oct–Nov 3 days Fuliang Art lovers, tea fans Apr–May (tea picking season) 2 days Taihe History buffs, foodies Autumn and winter (soup season) 2 days Longnan Architecture fans, deep travelers Year-round (avoid summer heat) 3 days “Winning” combos recommended: · Cultural win: Wuyuan + Fuliang (1-hour high-speed rail, see Hui-style architecture and porcelain) · Wild win: Longnan + Taihe (2-hour high-speed rail, see walled villages and ancient pavilions) Final advice: When visiting these counties, don’t rush the sights; rush the morning markets. The early morning vegetable markets and street breakfast stalls are the soul of the county. Come hungry, forget dieting, and good luck winning 😉

Jiangxi’s county charm lies in what it hides. It rivals the ancient charm of Huizhou and the landscapes of Guilin, but its low profile makes it even more pure. You say “visiting two is already a win.” This guide is made for deep travelers, here’s the essential info: --- 1. Shangrao · Wuyuan (The ultimate of autumn drying and ancient villages) Not just spring—its autumn is a masterpiece. · Must visit: Huangling (stay inside the scenic area, watch the empty autumn drying scenes at dawn), Shicheng (wake up at 5 AM to capture morning mist and cooking smoke), Chaguan (check in at the old bridge of the oxherd). · Eat: Steamed chicken in a pot, mashed tofu—look for home-style dishes at village aunties’ homes. · Tip: Choose 2–3 key spots with a pass, no need to visit all. 2. Jingdezhen · Fuliang (The soul of porcelain and tea fragrance) The original place of “sky blue waiting for rain,” quieter than Jingdezhen city. · Must visit: Yaoli ancient town (walk the Dongbu dock, see the single-log bridge over water), Hanxi village (land art festival, light and shadow exhibition in tea gardens), Bingding Chai kiln (stunning light and shadow concrete architecture). · Stay: Recommended to stay at a riverside guesthouse in Yaoli and fall asleep to the sound of water. 3. Yingtan · Longhushan (The secret realm of Danxia and Taoism) Strictly a town but feels like a county seat. The mountains and waters are full of immortal Taoist vibes. · Must visit: Bamboo raft drifting (watch the hanging coffin performance), mosquito-free village (summer experience), Shangqing ancient town (try the local specialty Shangqing tofu). · Play: Don’t miss the night live show “Dreaming of Longhushan.” The mountain and water backdrop is breathtaking. 4. Ji’an · Taihe (Luling culture and giant camphor trees) Extremely off the beaten path but rich in cultural heritage. · Must visit: Chatanpi (ancient water conservancy project, great for water play), Jintan ancient forest (huge ancient camphor trees, perfect for Tyndall effect light and shadow), Shukouzhou (island cycling). · Eat: Taihe black-bone chicken (local stew, incredibly fresh and tasty). 5. Shangrao · Yanshan (The faded aesthetics of Jiangnan’s paper capital) Pronounced “Yán shān,” often mispronounced, but it preserves the most complete Ming and Qing ancient streets. · Must visit: Hekou ancient town (uncommercialized original streets), Ehu academy (site of the “Ehu meeting,” extremely serene). · Eat: Yanshan hot rice noodles (a must-try, more delicate than Guilin rice noodles), Dengzhan cake. · -- Ultimate route combinations (5–7 days): · Northeast Jiangxi line (most classic): Wuyuan (2 days) → Fuliang/Yaoli (1.5 days) → Yanshan (1 day). Focus on Huizhou style and porcelain + tea. · Central Jiangxi line (most fairy tale-like): Longhushan (2 days) → Taihe (1.5 days). Focus on Taoist Danxia and Luling ancient culture. General survival tips: · Transport: It’s best to drive or use ride shares between counties. Public transport is inconvenient. · Avoid: Don’t buy so-called “wild lingzhi mushrooms” in scenic spots. Check the weather forecast before watching morning mist—no mist on clear sunny days. · Mindset: The most beautiful thing isn’t the attractions, but the half hour at dusk on an ancient bridge watching locals wash clothes and chat. If you only pick one, I highly recommend Fuliang because it combines Wuyuan’s scenery with Jingdezhen’s soul, and it has half the crowds. Want me to prepare a 5-day no-backtracking itinerary for “Fuliang + Wuyuan”? I can list daily accommodations and must-try restaurants for you. 😊

Complete guide to a four-day deep tour of Taihe, Jiangxi Taihe is located in the heart of central-southern Jiangxi and is an important heritage site of Luling culture. It offers both serene natural landscapes and the rich history of ancient villages. In just four days, without rushing long distances or crossing cities, you can fully experience the local natural scenery, cultural villages, and authentic flavors. The pace is relaxed throughout, with excellent value for money. Day 1: Arrive in Taihe and experience the charm of the old town Arrive in Taihe in the morning and check in at a pre-booked hotel. It’s recommended to stay near Gongnongbing Avenue in the city center, which is less than 1 km from Taihe’s main commercial area. This location is very convenient for getting around and dining. Hotels like Taihe Yuejia Business Hotel and Taihe Jiahe Business Hotel both have ratings above 4.7, with complete facilities and laundry services. You can stay comfortably for about 70 yuan per person. After a short rest, visit Taihe Kuai Pavilion in the afternoon. This ancient pavilion, built during the Tang dynasty, was where Huang Tingjian, the county magistrate of Taihe, once climbed. The famous poem line “Falling leaves cover a thousand mountains, the sky is vast and distant; the clear river reflects the bright moon” was born here. From the pavilion, you can enjoy a distant view of the Cheng River, a tributary of the Gan River, and feel the lingering cultural heritage of Luling. In the evening, take a stroll along the Cheng River walkway to see locals fishing and cooling off by the river. Then head to the old town night market. For your first meal, be sure to try Taihe’s signature early wine paired with small stir-fried dishes. Early wine is a local tradition passed down for centuries. At the night market, you can also enjoy authentic Taihe blood duck and sour taro stir-fried with large intestines, accompanied by a bowl of local rice tofu. You can get a full meal for about 20 yuan per person. Day 2: Deep ecological tour, encounter a natural oxygen bar Spend the whole day at Taihe Mazhou Jintan Ancient Forest. This ancient camphor forest by the Gan River is nearly 300 years old, with thousands of towering camphor trees shading the sky. The forest floor is lush with green grass. In the early morning, mist drifts from the river into the woods, and sunlight filters through the leaves creating a Tyndall effect. It’s a lesser-known “green wonderland” in Jiangxi. You can set up a canopy for a picnic in the forest and walk along the shallow riverbank. If you’re lucky, you might see flocks of egrets flying over the river. In the afternoon, visit Taihe Chatanpi, a thousand-year-old ancient dam built during the Southern Tang dynasty. It is the oldest surviving ancient water conservancy project in Jiangxi and still irrigates over 10,000 acres of farmland nearby. Walking on the stone dam, you can watch water flowing through the millennia-old stone crevices. Smoke rises gently from the ancient village on the riverbank, creating a vivid Jiangnan ink painting scene. Return to the city in the evening and try Taihe’s specialty Qiaotoubao free-range chicken. The chicken is slow-cooked with local tea tree mushrooms, resulting in fresh broth and tender meat. It’s a hidden local delicacy known only to residents. Day 3: Explore ancient villages and culture, touch the charm of Luling In the morning, head to the ancient village by the Taihe river. This village has a history of over a thousand years and preserves hundreds of Gan-style ancient residences from the Ming and Qing dynasties. The blue bricks and gray tiles are paired with tall horse-head walls. The village’s Kuixing Tower is a feng shui structure from the Ming dynasty. The thousand-acre rice fields beside the village turn golden waves in summer and autumn. Walking through the cobblestone alleys, you’ll see many ancient plaques inscribed with family teachings, truly feeling the heritage of “farming and studying” in Luling culture. In the afternoon, visit Taihe Jueyu Ancient Village. This village was named for ancient “titles and honors.” It preserves a cluster of ancestral halls, with dozens arranged along the alleys. The wood and stone carvings are well preserved. Elderly villagers often sit at the entrance of the halls basking in the sun while weaving bamboo baskets. You can sit down and chat with them, listening to old stories passed down for hundreds of years. Return to the city in the evening and try Taihe’s specialty snack, Taihe radish. Its sweet, sour, and crisp taste is a childhood favorite for many locals. Day 4: Leisurely tour around, return fully satisfied In the morning, visit Taihe Yanshan Academy, a private academy from the Qing dynasty and one of the best-preserved ancient academies in central-southern Jiangxi. The academy’s paintings and wood carvings remain in their original state. Sitting at the ancient desk, you can almost hear the sound of studying from a hundred years ago. Afterwards, visit local specialty shops to buy Taihe black-bone chicken products and Taihe bamboo crafts as souvenirs. In the afternoon, arrange your remaining time flexibly based on your return travel schedule. If time allows, you can visit Taihe Cultural Square in the city to experience the local daily leisure atmosphere. Then take the high-speed train from Taihe station to return, concluding your four-day deep tour. Taihe travel tips 1. Most of Taihe’s ancient forests and villages are in the suburbs. It’s recommended to rent a local electric scooter or hire a car in advance for flexible short-distance travel without waiting for public transport. 2. Taihe’s summer temperatures are relatively high. When visiting Jintan Ancient Forest, remember to take mosquito protection and wear comfortable flat shoes for walking in the woods. 3. The local early wine culture is strong. When experiencing it, you can sip the local rice wine moderately to enjoy the atmosphere without overdrinking. ------

The Dushi Li Ancestral Temple was first built in the 7th year of the Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1867) and completed two years later. During the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty, the ancestors of the Li family moved here from Taihe County, Ji'an, Jiangxi Province, and settled, over 600 years ago. The ancestral temple faces southwest, with its back to the northeast, with the Chunling River in front and a crescent-shaped pond on its side. It covers an area of 919.8 square meters, featuring three bays wide and three courtyards deep with six wings, each section rising progressively. It is a mixed structure of brick, wood, and stone, with small green tiles, a hard-peak roof, and stepped firewalls. 18 red sandstone "heaven-reaching" pillars support the beam frame, which is rare in ancient buildings in southern Hunan. The ancestral temple's stone red sandstone door frames and lintel bas-reliefs showcase exquisite craftsmanship. Wood carvings of figures, flowers, and birds adorn the front eaves corridor, the connecting corridor's cantilever beams, and the main hall's pillars. The main entrance features wood carvings of "Guan Yu on the left and Zhang Fei on the right," symbolizing loyalty and righteousness. Painted beams, purlins, doors, and windows are decorated with traditional colorful paintings, with elegant colors. From 1926 to 1927, the Li Ancestral Temple served as the headquarters for the Dushi Township Farmers' Association of the Shuikoushan Peasant Movement General Association and was an important stronghold for the workers' and peasants' movement in southern Hunan. It is a key cultural relic protection unit of Hunan Province.

Hidden in Taihe County, Ji'an, Jiangxi, Shukou Ecological Island is gently embraced by the Gan River and Shu River. Located beside National Highway 105 in Mashi Town, it is famously known as the "First Island of the Thousand-Mile Gan River." This river island covers a total area of 12.85 square kilometers, with a forest coverage rate as high as 83%. The Gan-Yue Expressway and National Highway 105 run alongside the island, which is only 8 kilometers from Taihe County seat, making transportation very convenient. Yet, it conceals pristine natural beauty far from the hustle and bustle, where every step reveals gentle landscapes of mountains and waters. Stepping onto this island, your eyes are filled with endless natural beauty. The 1,600-meter riverside boardwalk along the Gan River is a must-visit. Feel the river breeze on your face as you watch a thousand sails pass by, with green trees shading the shore. In early spring, thousands of red plum blossoms reflect against blue tiles and white walls; in late spring, waves of rapeseed flowers surge; in autumn, chestnut groves hang heavy with fruit. Every snapshot is a healing masterpiece. The island’s thousand-year-old camphor trees are lush and thriving, the Nanzhuang Garden exudes ancient charm, and there are fun activities like high-altitude drifting and glass plank bridges. You can leisurely enjoy the tranquility of the countryside or experience joyful family outings. Every breath in the river breeze carries the fresh scent of grass and wood. The beauty of this land is also hidden in its millennia of historical heritage. Since the Ouyang family established roots here in the Southern Song Dynasty, Shukou Ancient Village has nearly a thousand years of history. During the Ming Dynasty, it was even praised as the "Little Nanjing of Jiangnan." The village’s ancient ancestral halls, steles, and residences are well preserved. The local tales of "one family producing twenty-one imperial scholars," "father and son both imperial scholars," and "brothers serving as ministers" are still passed down by locals. Ouyang De, a representative figure of Yangming Neo-Confucianism, was born here, and the Ming Dynasty thinker Wang Yangming once wrote a poem praising the place: "Tree shadows surge like green waves, flowers fall like flowing rainbows." Walking on the bluestone paths, your fingertips brushing the mottled ancient walls, you can almost hear the sounds of reading and laughter from centuries ago, as if time slows down. The vibrant local life of Taihe is also reflected in the island’s flavors. Shukou tea here was once a tribute to the Qing Dynasty imperial palace. Brewing a cup releases a pure and mellow aroma with a lasting sweet aftertaste. The intangible cultural heritage radish dumplings have chewy skins and fresh fillings; the black-bone chicken sauce pancakes are savory with a hint of spiciness; and the bamboo pole sweet potato jelly is smooth and refreshing, perfect for cooling off. Every bite is an authentic taste of Taihe. The island’s Yifang Courtyard Hotel offers river views from the window. At night, you can fall asleep to the sound of the Gan River flowing, and in the morning, enjoy a cup of fresh tea by the tea fields, immersing yourself in the beauty of rural life. Visiting here is actually very simple. You can drive 8 kilometers from Taihe County seat along National Highway 105, or take bus route 602 to Shukouzhou Road Entrance Station. It’s recommended to spend a day here: explore the ancient village and its history in the morning, enjoy the river breeze along the boardwalk in the afternoon, and watch the sunset by the river in the evening. Photography enthusiasts should not miss the early morning red plum blossoms and the light and shadow of the ancient village. Visiting in early spring (February to March) also coincides with the most beautiful plum blossom viewing season. No need to travel far away, this small island in the heart of the Gan River offers both the ecological beauty of mountains and waters and a thousand years of cultural heritage. Take a walk, have a look, and taste the local flavors—you’ll find the beauty and poetry of life quietly tucked away in your heart.
