Today I didn’t bring a camera, so I entered Shaohu Garden from the south gate. The first thing I saw was Wentong Tower, and I couldn’t help but raise my phone to take a picture. The tower has a yellow body and green eaves, with seven stories and eight sides. It stands at the northwest corner of the ancient city of Huai’an. Not far to the west is the Grand Canal. It was originally the Longxing Temple Tower, built by imperial decree in the second year of Jinglong during the reign of Emperor Zhongzong of the Tang dynasty. It was initially thirteen stories tall and over 40 meters high. It was rebuilt in the second year of Chongzhen in the Ming dynasty and renamed Wentong Tower after Wentong Temple. To this day, many people in Huai’an regard it as the cultural heart of the city. In the seventh year of Kangxi in the Qing dynasty, 1668, an 8.5-magnitude earthquake struck Tancheng. Huai’an, hundreds of miles away, was also damaged, and Wentong Tower was reduced to just two stories. Although it was later rebuilt, it never returned to its original thirteen stories and was finally restored to the seven stories seen today. The current tower is also a Qing dynasty restoration. In front of the tower lies a stone turtle carrying a stele. The turtle’s back has a smooth base for the stele and a clear groove for the inscription, but the stele itself is long gone. What was inscribed on the original stele and when it was erected is now unknown. A complete stele would record history, but with it gone, only an empty-backed stone turtle remains. Nearby, the stele garden houses temple steles, epitaphs, and stone carvings from various eras in Huai’an, but unfortunately, the gate was closed when I visited today. From Wentong Tower, passing through Shenyu Gate and Qingqu Gate, Shaohu finally unfolds before your eyes. Shaohu is not a natural lake but a body of water left from soil excavation when the city of Huai’an was built during the Eastern Jin dynasty. It is named Shaohu because its shape curves like a spoon. Over the following thousand years, temples, Taoist shrines, academies, and stele gardens were built along the lake, and in the past, there were ten famous scenic spots around Shaohu. Next to the nine-arch bridge, inside the Bell Pavilion, hangs a Jin Tiande bronze bell. The four characters “Long live the emperor” are still clear on the bell. This bell was cast in the third year of Jin Tiande, 1151 AD. It originally belonged to Yangshan Temple in Pizhou but later somehow ended up in Shanyang. In the sixth year of Chenghua in the Ming dynasty, Chen Rui, the general overseeing canal transport and the Pingjiang Earl, led the effort to salvage it from Guanjia Lake west of Huai’an city.
