The town walls are not the strongest defense; what truly repels invasions are the surrounding lands—valleys, dunes, and sea winds that confuse, starve, exhaust, and frighten armies. Los Alcornocales Natural Park, located north of Tarifa, is one of the largest and most important cork oak forests in Spain. The climate is relatively humid, sometimes featuring the rare European cloud forest, with many forests, valleys, and streams. It is famous for its rich biodiversity (deer, wild boar, birds of prey, etc.) and hiking trails. The mountain paths are lined with pepper trees, and I always pick a bunch whenever I pass by. Estrecho Natural Park (Parque Natural del Estrecho) is the most important natural park closest to Tarifa, protecting the ecological environment along the coast and surrounding waters of the Strait of Gibraltar. It is located at the meeting point of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, serving as a crucial migratory route for birds. Under the control of Muslim forces from North Africa for 580 years, the city's structure and appearance developed distinct Arabic architectural features: the massive rectangular layout of the Guzman Castle, ancient city walls built with rough stones and mortar with irregular wall lines, narrow winding alleys, irregular blocks, and inward-facing residences. The natural advantages of the strait fortress made this place easy to defend but hard to attack. Tarifa is located at the narrowest part of the Strait of Gibraltar, surrounded by the sea on three sides, with a long and narrow terrain. The city backs onto hills and faces the sea, making it very suitable for defense. The voyage from North Africa (Morocco) to Tarifa is very short, allowing Muslim forces to reinforce from Africa at any time. Therefore, it was not until 1292 that King Sancho IV of Castile captured the city from the Muslims, marking an important achievement for the Christian kingdoms moving south. Tarifa was regarded as the "lock and key between Europe and Africa." Muslim forces besieged it multiple times afterward, all ending in failure. The most famous event was the siege in 1294 when the Marinid army captured Guzman's son and brought him to the city walls, demanding surrender in exchange for his life. If you're planning a multi-country trip, here’s the realistic breakdown of what’s worth your time and cash, minus the fluff. · *The Route & Logistics** We started down in Morocco (Casablanca, Fes, Chefchaouen), took the ferry across to Tarifa in Spain, and then used the high-speed trains to get between Seville, Madrid, and Barcelona, ending with a loop into Portugal (Lisbon and Porto). · **Transport:** High-speed rail in Spain is brilliant. Fast, reliable, and decent value if you book a few weeks in advance. Much less hassle than flying. · **Essentials:** Obviously, get your Schengen visa sorted early. Bring a universal plug adaptor because socket types can vary. Also, post-Brexit roaming is a rip-off, so buy a cheap EU eSIM before you go—way cheaper than paying daily roaming fees. · **Weather:** It’s hot.
