During the day, it shines as a milky-blue lake. In the evening, the mountain ridges are dyed orange, and at night, countless stars spread out overhead. Having lived in New Zealand for three years and traveled all over, Tekapo is still a special place I want to return to again and again. Tekapo Blue, Like Melted Paint When I first saw Lake Tekapo, what surprised me the most was the color of the water. The milky turquoise blue of Lake Tekapo is created by "rock flour"—finely ground rock particles carved by glaciers—suspended in the water and reflecting the sunlight. It looks like a filtered photo, but the scenery spreading right before your eyes is entirely real. On windless days, the surface of the lake calms down, and the blue water and snow-capped mountains merge into a single picturesque landscape. It is so breathtakingly beautiful that even just walking along the lakeshore, you'll find yourself stopping over and over again. The "Church of the Good Shepherd" Standing by the Lake The iconic building of Tekapo is the Church of the Good Shepherd, a small stone church standing right on the edge of the lake. Built in 1935, it was the first church in the Mackenzie Basin. Today, it still serves as an interdenominational church, holding worship services year-round. It is not a glamorous building. Still, the overlapping scenery of the stone church, the turquoise lake, and the distant mountain ranges holds a quiet beauty that can only be found in Tekapo. The soft morning light, the clear blue sky of the day, the twilight silhouette, and the snow-covered winter. Depending on the time and season of your visit, the impression shifts so much that it's hard to believe it's the same church. Fields of Lupins from Spring to Early Summer If you visit from around November into the summer, the lakeshore is painted with purple and pink lupins. According to conservation data from the New Zealand government, the flowering period for Russell lupins is generally from November to February. Tourist guides often introduce mid-November to early January as the best time to see them. The bloom status varies each year depending on temperature and weather. The blue lake, the purple flowers, and the mountains stretching out in the background. During this season, no matter where you look, Tekapo resembles a perfect painting. Tekapo's True Magic Begins at Night I think it is a real shame to pass through Tekapo on just a day trip. The area around Tekapo is part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. The entire region is working together to reduce light pollution and protect the dark night sky. On clear nights with little moonlight, you can see more stars than you could ever count with the naked eye. If conditions align, the "Southern Lights (Aurora Australis)" might even make an appearance. However, since auroras depend on weather and solar activity, seeing one is never guaranteed. Tourism New Zealand suggests April to September as a rough guide for the best time to try and spot the Southern Lights around Tekapo. Looking up at the sky in this quiet town, it feels like a completely different night sky from the one you usually see. My Recommendation: "Stay at Least One Night" Even just seeing the lake during the day makes Tekapo a beautiful enough destination. But if you want to know its true charm, I highly recommend staying for at least one night. The daytime turquoise blue, the church silhouetted against the sunset, the sky full of stars, and the serene morning lake. Tekapo is a place that only becomes complete once you've seen it through all hours of the day. If you are traveling around New Zealand's South Island, instead of just making a short stop on your way, try taking some time to do absolutely nothing here. 🌌 Lake Tekapo After Dark I had one of those “OMG, did we really capture this?” moments at Lake Tekapo. By day, Tekapo felt calm and wide open — blue lake, mountain views, quiet benches and cold winter air. But after sunset, it became something completely different. The sky slowly opened up above us. Stars appeared in every direction, the Milky Way became visible, and there was even a faint aurora-like glow in the sky. It was the kind of scene that photos can only partly show. Unless you see it with your own eyes, it is hard to describe how mysterious and overwhelming that night sky felt. For a moment, everything was quiet. No rush, no noise, just cold air, darkness and a sky so beautiful it almost made you emotional. Some photos were blurred. Some were imperfect. But the memory was very clear. At the end of April, my two children and I decided to travel to the South Island of New Zealand. For this trip, we chose the simplest possible way to travel. No driving, mainly using buses, public transport, and day tours. Although the city experienced a major earthquake in 2011, it has recovered beautifully. It has become a city that is both modern and warm at the same time. From the city, it gradually changed to vast grasslands, mountains, and the golden trees of autumn. It was a scene so beautiful I almost didn't want to take my eyes off it. It was very cold at night, but the sky was full of stars. We took a taxi to: Wanaka 🚍 Taxi fare: Approximately 5,500 THB / 3 people Wanaka is a small lakeside town, quieter than Queenstown and full of warm, resort-like atmosphere for locals. Tonight we stayed in an Airbnb by the lake. 🏠 Accommodation cost: 5,490 THB/night In the evening, the trees around the lake began to turn golden, red, and orange. The whole town seemed to be glowing 🍁 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🌳 DAY 5 That Wanaka Tree This morning we walked along the lake to see: That Wanaka Tree A solitary tree in the middle of the water that has become one of New Zealand's most famous photographs. It's actually just an ordinary willow tree. But the view of the mountains, the lake, and the reflections on the water's surface has made it a world-class landmark. In the morning, photographers, tourists, and locals alike stroll quietly along the lake. In the afternoon, we went to Puzzling World. A popular attraction for families. There's both a maze and an illusion room. In late April, the whole town is covered in golden yellow leaves. The wind blows, and the leaves slowly fall, creating a scene straight out of a movie.
