Do you want to plan a family trip in the northern Netherlands? I’d suggest Texel! It is the largest Dutch warden island. On the island, there are dunes, beaches, forests, and tidal flats. It is cozy and suitable for families. They offer nice holiday houses even with board games that you can play with family and friends. I spent seven nights aboard the Mare fan Fryslan, biking and sailing around Ijslemeer and Waddensee. The crew provided excellent route instructions and maps in case we wanted to explore different paths, and the Netherlands proved to be incredibly bike-friendly. Of the six full days, one day was devoted to sailing, while the others were a mix of half-day and full-day biking. We did encounter strong winds on one biking day and a few brief rain showers during the week, but these minor challenges didn't detract from the overall fun. Impressively, each day seemed to outshine the previous one! On the day we sailed, passengers could assist in hoisting the sails, guided by clear instructions even for beginners. We also picked up some basic sailing knowledge, which added to the experience. The bike routes were scenic and rich in history, taking us past rural and historical gems. My personal highlights included the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen, Fort de Schans and Dunes National Park on Texel, the Bunker Museum on Terschelling, and the Eise Eisinga planetarium in Franeker. The cabins were cleaned daily, with comfortable beds and well-maintained, spacious rooms and en suite bathrooms. As for the food, the meals onboard were masterfully prepared and beautifully presented, making the journey all the more enjoyable.

Schiermonnikoog is car-light; bikes rule. Both islands close bunker interiors after dusk (ranger rule, €90 fine if caught inside at night). I packed lunch both days—island food is €12 for a panini. Mistake: I assumed one day covered both; the ferries and bike distances eat time, and Texel alone deserves 6 hours. Worth it? Yes for bunker nerds who like pedalling between concrete relics with sheep as audience. No if you want a single tidy exhibit. Question: is the effort of island-hopping between scattered bunkers worth more than one dense fort museum on the mainland?

#freehotelstay I had a few spare days last autumn and decided to take a little holiday to the Dutch Island of Texel. to get there you need to take a big ferry from the city of Den Helder. The boat ride is a great experience itself. Seeing the waves and seaguls is amazing. I visited De Koog and Oosterend. I loved it and I will definetely come back to Texel one day.
