Day 3: Devil City + Water Fleet + Roller Coaster Road, three visual bombshells in one day Nanbaxian Yadan Devil City—the name comes from eight female geologists who sacrificed their lives. After visiting Chaka Salt Lake – the "Mirror of the Sky" (Figures 4 and 5), we checked here. The next day, after a 3-hour drive across the wilderness, we arrived at Hala Lake. The pure cobalt blue lake surface and the snow-capped peaks of Unity Peak reflected each other beautifully. When this "Pearl of the Plateau" hidden in the wilderness came into view, it felt as if our souls were cleansed and purified by the breathtaking scenery. In this moment, we suddenly realize that the meaning of the journey and the poetry in the wind both lie here.

Past the rolling Qilian Mountains and beyond the bustling highways, you'll arrive at Hala Lake, a hidden wilderness tucked deep in the plateau. At an elevation of 4,077 m, the deep blue lake stretches quietly between heaven and earth, with the snow-capped Tuanjie Peak, the main summit of the Qilian Mountains, standing in the distance. The white snow peaks mirror in the crystal-clear lake, and the vast landscape is a sight that touches the soul. A checkpoint registration with your ID is required upon entry. Ways to Explore Option 1: East Route – Easy Experience (via Tianjun County, low difficulty) Tianjun County → Yangkang Township → South Shore of Hala Lake, about 190 km one way, 3.5–4 hours of driving. Mostly paved roads, accessible by regular SUVs. ✅ Suitable for: Regular travelers, day trips, visiting the key photo spot on the south shore, and enjoying the snow mountain and lake views. Option 2: Hardcore Crossing – Enter from the East, Exit from the South (Enter via Tianjun, Exit via Delingha) Enter Hala Lake from Tianjun County, cross the southern route to Delingha, about 330 km in total, 8–10 hours of driving. The southern route (Hala Lake → Delingha) features washboard roads, bomb craters, and steep gravel slopes. Only 4WD off-road vehicles are allowed. Two vehicles must travel together; solo driving is not recommended. Access may be controlled and turned back during rainy weather. ✅ Suitable for off-road enthusiasts. This route covers grasslands, wilderness, and canyons in one trip and is a classic crossing route in Northwest China. Option 3: South Route Round Trip (Delingha ↔ Hala Lake) Round trip between Delingha and the south shore of Hala Lake, 130 km one way, 4–4.5 hours. The road conditions are poor, all off-road terrain, suitable only for 4WD hardcore off-road vehicles. Not recommended for beginners. Key Photo Spots 1. Bring oxygen canisters, glucose, and other supplies. 2. Bring your own supplies: No supplies are available in the lake area. Bring plenty of drinking water, dry food, and trash bags. 3. Communication: There is no mobile signal throughout the lake area. Download offline maps in advance. Solo driving is not recommended; traveling in a group is safer. 4. Clothing: Plateau weather changes rapidly. Even in midsummer, temperatures by the lake are very low. Windproof jackets and thick coats are essential, and sunscreen and sunglasses are a must. 5.
