ISTANBUL — TOP 5 MUST-SEE PLACES (Our Personal Rating).
Istanbul is a city you simply can’t fully explore in just one day. But if you only have a couple of days or want to prioritize the absolute best, here’s our personal top 5 list of places that left the most unforgettable impressions on us. Plus, as a bonus, we’ve included a few spots we also absolutely love but didn’t make the main list (mostly because we spent way too much time walking around!).
1. 🏛️ BASILICA CISTERN (Yerebatan Sarnıcı) — THE UNDERGROUND KINGDOM
Why it’s a big deal: This place feels like a portal to another dimension. You descend underground to find 336 columns, eerie silence, dripping water, and magical twilight.
Our experience: We visited on our very first day, and it ended up being one of our most powerful experiences. The Medusa heads are especially striking—they look best in the dim light when the illumination softly hits the stone faces. We didn’t rush; we just stood there listening to the water dripping.
Tip: Buy your tickets online to skip the lines. It’s pretty cool inside (around 60°F / +15°C).
Our rating: 10/10 — an absolute must-see!
2. 🕌 HAGIA SOPHIA (Hagia Sophia) — THE SYMBOL OF MILLENNIA
Why it’s a big deal: This building is older than many countries! It’s been a cathedral, a mosque, and a mosque again. Its colossal dome and intricate mosaics will leave you speechless.
Our experience: We went in the morning, but it was already quite crowded. The gold-backed mosaics, giant calligraphic medallions, and ancient columns all create an overwhelming sense of grandeur. We stood under the massive dome for a long time, just looking up in awe.
Tip: Get there right when it opens (if you're going in the morning) or late in the evening. Keep prayer times (namaz) in mind, as entry might be restricted. You can purchase tickets online.
Our rating: 9/10 — definitely worth visiting.
3. 🏯 TOPKAPI PALACE (Topkapı Sarayı) — AN EMPIRE IN DETAIL
Why it’s a big deal: This was the main residence of the Ottoman sultans for 400 years! Its sheer scale and the collections inside (including the famous library, the harem, and the treasury) are simply mind-blowing.
Our experience: We dedicated a whole day to this because we quickly realized it takes at least half a day to see properly. It’s not just a palace—it’s a city within a city, full of pavilions, courtyards, and the treasury (which is best to hit early before the lines form).
Tip: Give yourself 3 to 4 hours, and don’t rush. Rent an audio guide or download a map to your phone. It’s best to arrive right when it opens (around 9–10 AM). The harem ticket is sold separately, but it’s 100% worth it.
Our rating: 10/10 — Istanbul’s ultimate landmark.
4. 🏰 DOLMABAHÇE PALACE (Dolmabahçe Sarayı) — 19TH-CENTURY LUXURY
Why it’s a big deal: This palace is the exact opposite of Topkapi. While Topkapi feels very medieval, Dolmabahçe represents 19th-century European elegance. Think crystal, gold, intricate stucco, and that famous crystal staircase.
Our experience: Once inside, we just couldn't look away—every room feels like a lavish jewelry box. We were especially blown away by the ceremonial hall with its massive chandelier (a gift from Queen Victoria!). And the gardens overlooking the Bosphorus are the perfect place for a scenic stroll.
Tip: This one also takes time; plan for at least 3 hours. You can buy tickets at the box office. Photography isn't allowed inside, but you can get some stunning shots outside by the gates or in the gardens.
Our rating: 9/10 — incredibly stunning. Slightly smaller than Topkapi, but still a must-see.
5. 🌉 GALATA TOWER (Galata Kulesi) — A PANORAMIC MASTERPIECE
Why it’s a big deal: This tower offers the absolute best views of Istanbul: the Bosphorus, the Golden Horn, and the historic districts—all from high above. It’s the perfect spot to get your first real feel for the city.
Our experience: We didn’t actually go inside because the tickets felt a bit pricey, but we hung out at the base, drank coffee, and snapped tons of photos. And in the evening we came back again — the tower is beautifully lit up against the night sky, and we admired it in its nighttime glow.
Tip: If you do want to go up, buy your tickets online in advance. Otherwise, just walking around the outside is totally worth it. The surrounding neighborhood has a fantastic vibe.
Our rating: 9/10 for the view and vibe, but expensive — 6/10 for the entry fee.
📌 PLACES WE ALSO LOVE
💙 Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii) — We couldn’t go inside due to prayer times, but it’s breathtaking from the outside. And definitely pop in when you have some free time.
It has such a beautiful and atmospheric vibe.
🕌 Mihrimah Sultan Mosque (Mihrimah Sultan Camii) — One of the city’s most gorgeous mosques, feeling elegant yet cozy. It’s located in the Üsküdar neighborhood on the Asian side—totally worth the trip for the amazing views and peaceful atmosphere.
🎨 Balat District (Balat) — These are the colorful, charming streets you probably had in mind! We stumbled upon it by accident, and it turned out to be one of the most photogenic spots on our trip: vibrant houses, vintage staircases, coffee on the steps, and super friendly locals smiling for the camera. Definitely check it out if you want to see a different, less touristy side of Istanbul.

Istanbul is a city you could spend a lifetime discovering. Our top 5 is really just the beginning. Even if you miss a few spots, the city itself will give you so many incredible experiences that you’ll definitely want to come back.
