It is a swamp formed by hot spring water gathering near the remains of an ancient explosion crater. Surrounded by several fumaroles left over from past volcanic activity that spew sulfur-rich gas and thermal waters, the swamp is highly acidic, making it impossible for fish to survive. With water temperatures reaching up to 90°C (194°F), you cannot get close to the swamp. 🍂 The area is enveloped in rising steam and the scent of sulfur, presenting a slightly desolate yet mesmerizing natural wonder. 🍁🍁 In the fall, the green swamp creates a striking contrast with the vibrant red autumn foliage, forming a picturesque landscape. The Hakkoda Mountains reflect on the water's surface, and the scenery magically transforms with the changing weather and seasons, leaving visitors captivated. 🥰🥰 Just across the road, the "Manju Fukashi" (Steamed Bun) hot spring facility is highly recommended. You can sit right in your everyday clothes on a bench built over flowing 95°C (203°F) hot spring water. Day 2 of my Aomori trip kicked off at 3:30 AM at Tate. [Aomori] Day 2 | From the Morning Market to Oirase and Lake Towada! A Full Day of Enjoying Aomori On the second day of my Aomori trip, I headed to the Tatehana Wharf Morning Market at 3:30 AM. Vendors started setting up their stalls while it was still dark, and the vibrant morning energy was just incredible! With so much fresh seafood and local grub, it was definitely worth waking up early for. Afterward, I took a quick nap at Kabushima Kabu-nya before visiting Kabushima Shrine. There were so many black-tailed gulls! The vibrant blue sky framing the shrine felt like the quintessential Aomori experience. Next, I stopped by "Ara, Ringo." at Oirase Roman Park. Their apple sweets were absolutely adorable and made for the perfect little break during the road trip. From there, I headed to the Ishigedo Rest Area at Oirase Gorge. Surrounded by lush greenery, the soothing sounds of the flowing water and waterfalls reminded me exactly why Oirase is a must-visit on any Aomori itinerary. In the afternoon, I made my way to Lake Towada. The view of the emerald blue water and the sightseeing boats was stunning and incredibly relaxing. To wrap up the day, I soaked away my travel fatigue at Sukayu Onsen before spending the night in my car at Roadside Station Jusanko Kogen. Instead of sitting down for a formal meal, I happily snacked on my morning market finds while driving and treated myself to apple sweets and soft-serve ice cream along the way—a totally satisfying food day! A 3-day, 2-night road trip to Aomori from Hokkaido via ferry. Before setting off, I wondered, "How much can we really see in just three days?" But as it turned out, we were able to fully enjoy the stunning views, incredible seafood, bustling markets, and beautiful shrines right up until it was time to catch the ferry home. Day 1: We took the ferry from Hokkaido to Aomori. We visited Cape Oma, the northernmost point of Honshu, savored Oma tuna, and explored Hotokegaura, which was on a completely different scale of breathtaking. Day 2: We started bright and early with some delicious food at the Tatehana Wharf Morning Market, then headed to Kabushima, an island swarming with black-tailed gulls. Afterward, we visited "a la ringo", Oirase Gorge, and Lake Towada, taking in the charming spots and beautiful nature that Aomori is known for. Day 3: We enjoyed freshwater clam soup at Lake Jusan, visited Takayama Inari Shrine, dug into a "Nokke-don" (customizable seafood rice bowl) and giant oysters at the Aomori Gyosai Center, and took a stroll around the station near A-FACTORY. Finally, we hopped on the Tsugaru Strait Ferry to head back to Hokkaido. Even with just 3 days and 2 nights, you can cover a lot of ground in Aomori with the right route. After hiking along the Oirase Stream, I made a quick stop at Lake Towada. We were cutting it close for our hot spring reservation that day, so we didn't have much time to sightsee and had to rush our visit. Still, as a lake enthusiast, I'm really glad I got to see it. Lake Towada is a caldera lake that spans across Aomori and Akita prefectures. Reaching a maximum depth of 327 meters, it's said to be the third deepest lake in Japan. It serves as the source of the Oirase Stream, and together, they are designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and a Natural Monument of Japan. Although I only saw a fraction of it, the sheer size of the lake surrounded by mountains and its tranquil atmosphere were absolutely stunning. During my trip to Aomori, I finally visited the Oirase Gorge, a place I'd long dreamed of going to. The Oirase Gorge is a stream that stretches for approximately 14km along the Oirase River, which flows from Lake Towada. It's designated as a National Special Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument, and has been awarded two stars in the Michelin Green Guide. I'd always wanted to go there after seeing pictures, but actually walking through it exceeded my expectations. Walking right beside the river, you can feel the water flowing between the rocks, the green of the moss, the sunlight filtering through the trees, and the sound of the waterfalls. Everywhere you look is beautiful; I truly understood what "the beauty of a mountain stream" means. This time, I drove part of the way, walked about 1.9km from there, and took a bus back. Afterward, I drove further inland and visited waterfalls such as Choshi Falls. The whole trip took about two and a half hours. Even without walking for too long, combining driving, walking, and buses allowed me to fully enjoy the beauty of the Oirase Gorge. It's rare to find a place where you can walk along a river for such a long time, and feel so good. The Oirase Stream, which I had dreamed of visiting, exceeded my expectations. A Michelin two-star worthy stream. I visited the Aomori apple specialty shop "a la ringo," a place I absolutely had to check out during my trip to Aomori. From the moment you walk in, it's just apples, apples, and more apples everywhere you look. Both the shop itself and the products are so adorable that it’s fun just looking around. The first thing I tried was a small, apple-shaped treat. This is the "Aomori Apple Pound Cake," which apparently won 1st place in the souvenir category across all 47 prefectures at the CREA Gift Awards 2025. Despite its small size, it was incredibly moist and packed with real apple flavor. After just one bite, I knew this would make a fantastic souvenir. And then, there was the apple pie. Honestly, it completely changed my idea of what an apple pie could be. Instead of a heavy, overpowering sweetness, the natural, delicious flavor of the apples took center stage. It was so good that I could easily devour it even on a full stomach. At the first location I visited, the Michi-no-Eki Roman Park store, I was too full to try their soft-serve ice cream, which I really regretted. But on the last day of my trip, I found another "a la ringo" inside A-FACTORY near Aomori Station. I just had to have it, so I finally got my soft-serve! Let me tell you, the apple flavor was incredibly rich. Even though it’s ice cream, I was amazed by how intensely flavorful it was—almost like drinking 100% pure apple juice. The apple pie, the apple-shaped pound cake, and the apple soft-serve. If you ever come to Aomori, you'll definitely be glad you stopped by. 🇯🇵 During my 3-day, 2-night trip to Aomori, I visited Hirosaki City and Aomori City🎏. What impressed me the most was Aomori's apple cuisine: apple curry, apple dumplings, and more🍎! Aomori scallops are also a must-try! - 1️⃣ The number one apple-producing region in Japan🏅. I took a day trip from Aomori City (about a 45-minute JR ride) mainly to visit the Apple Park and a charming tea room in Hirosaki Park⛲️ 🍎 Hirosaki Apple Park @hirosaki_applepark Home to 2,300 apple trees, this park offers apple-picking experiences from August to November🌳. You can enjoy a stunning view of Mount Iwaki from the park. There are exhibitions about apples and a restaurant🍴. We went to the restaurant and tried the apple curry and apple pork cutlet, which made for a nice light meal~ ☕️ Taisho Roman Tea Room @taishoroman__ This tea room is incredibly popular; we even had to wait for half an hour during afternoon tea time⏰. Both the interior and exterior are highly photogenic🍎. We tried two types of apple pie, and the set menu comes with apple juice or apple tea. The riverbanks are completely shaded by lush trees, and the air is incredibly fresh. As you stroll along, you'll be greeted by waterfalls of various sizes—there's a new surprise around almost every corner. Ishigedo is a popular starting point or rest stop for Oirase Gorge itineraries, making it the perfect spot to recharge. Don't forget to try the local apple pie here; it's sweet, flaky, and a massive hit among locals! Recommended Route: We suggest starting your riverside walk from Ishigedo (Address: 〒034-0301 Aomori, Towada, Okuse, Ishigedo). There are well-maintained trails along the way, and a leisurely 2-to-3-hour walk will take you to the main waterfall zone, featuring the Chisuji Waterfall and the stunning Kumoi Waterfall. Every photo spot has its own unique charm. As you follow the winding stream, the continuous, soothing sound of the rushing water is incredibly therapeutic! Must-Do Activities & Photo Spots: 1. Pass through Ishigedo: This spot is easily accessible by bus. We recommend starting your day early—not only to beat the crowds but also to enjoy the pleasant morning light. 2. This stunning lupine garden surrounded by incredible nature is absolutely beautiful and so much fun to photograph! It's truly one of the hidden gems in Towada, Aomori Prefecture, that you definitely need to add to your itinerary. The highlight here is the seasonal flower fields, especially the lupines, peonies, and Japanese irises that bloom continuously from May through July. Let me tell you, it's gorgeous! The colors are incredibly vibrant, and there are countless spots to snap photos. You can just take a leisurely stroll without feeling rushed. Taking a scenic drive in a rental car from Hachinohe Station to Lake Towada🚗✨ … Our first stop was the Towada Art Center🎨 I was absolutely blown away by the massive artworks😳✨ And couldn't contain my excitement over the cute pieces😆 They also sell tons of fabulous merch, making it a museum I instantly fell in love with😍♡ … Next up, time for some local grub at Tsukasa Towada Barayaki Taishu Shokudo🐂✨ The sweet and savory meat pairs perfectly with rice😆👍 Adding a raw egg is a total must!!🙋‍♀️ Oddly enough, they had Okinawa Soba despite being in Aomori, (which I happily devoured, of course😎) Since "bara" (rib) sounds like "bara" (rose), the interior is inspired by The Rose of Versailles🌹 Between that and the unique staff chants, it was a hilarious spot with so much going on😆 No wonder it’s such a hit😆😆 … Off to a great start on this Aomori trip🌳✨ … Heading to our next destination, Lake Towada, we drove through the Oirase Gorge🚗✨ … The sunlight filtering through the trees felt incredible, and just driving along this breathtaking route was so therapeutic🥰 … By the way, we got our rental car right outside the East Exit of Hachinohe Station at Times Car Rental🚗✨ This time we went with a Suzuki Solio😆 Just in case we bumped into a bear, we opted for the full coverage insurance plan🙋‍♀️✨ The staff were super friendly and polite🙆‍♀️ Both the office and the car were sparkling clean, so we could just relax and enjoy the ride🥰 …

#springtravel Oirase Gorge is known as the most beautiful gorge in Japan. We drove from Aomori City, passing through Kanno Kogen, Hakkoda Ropeway Station, Shirokura Bridge, Sukayu Onsen, Jigokunuma, Furennuma, Sarukura Onsen, Hakkoda Nijirin, Tsutsumi Marsh, and then had lunch at Keigetsu in Yasaki. Afterwards, we drove to the Oirase Gorge Museum for a visit, and then parked at Ishido. From there, we hiked to appreciate the beauty of Oirase Gorge. You have to go against the current to see its beauty, and we left at 4:30 pm because there are many mosquitoes. It's best to wear amphibious shoes for easier walking. There are many rapids and waterfalls along the way, making it a great spot for taking photos.

When I booked the room, I was immediately captivated by the lawn and lake view in front of the hotel. After breakfast, you can stroll along the lakeside path to digest, and when you're tired, return to the hotel lobby for a coffee. Then, sit on an outdoor chair and enjoy the sunshine and the beautiful lake view; time seems to stand still in that moment. The Towada Prince Hotel is definitely a hotel I would visit again. 👍 Advantages: 1. The Western-style dinner set menu was excellent. The beef was incredibly tender and not bloody at all, paired with very finely grated carrots, giving the tender meat a hint of sweetness—Michelin-level quality. The soup was scallop and potato soup, sweet and delicious, perfect for pairing with white wine. This time, I ordered Akita white wine, which had a unique aroma reminiscent of Muscat grapes (or perhaps like Flying Leigh chewing gum). While not as sophisticated as French wines, its distinctive flavor is worth trying for those who want to try something new. 2. Semi-buffet breakfast: The buffet area offers many local dishes, such as award-winning local white rice (however, frankly, Japanese rice these days doesn't taste as good as it used to; I wonder if it's due to climate differences), apple juice, apple curry, etc. 3. The hotel lobby faces Lake Towada, just a one-minute walk from the lakeside. Lake Towada in autumn, with its surrounding bare trees, is truly breathtaking. 👎 Cons: 1. The rooms are a bit old, but considering the view and delicious food, this is acceptable. 2. My skin felt quite dry after soaking in the hot spring, probably due to the water quality in the area. I experienced the same thing the next day when I switched to a Hoshino Resort at twice the price. Towada Lake Prince vs. Oirasekei Hoshino Resort: In terms of price, comfort, and view, Towada Lake Prince is definitely the winner. 🚌 Transportation: The hotel offers a free shuttle bus to Hachinohe Station, the Museum of Contemporary Art Towada, or the Towada Lake Resort. You can stay overnight at a Lake Towada hotel and then visit Lake Towada and the Oirase Stream the next day. Even without a car, public transportation is very convenient. 🚌 Transportation: You can take a JR bus from either Aomori Station or Hachinohe Station. Hachinohe Station is closer to the museum, but you need to reserve a seat online in advance. It's highly recommended to make a reservation beforehand. The tranquility of this ryokan is soothing. Tsutanuma is just 15 minutes walk away too. The course dinner and buffer breakfast were amazing too and champion the local ingredients. Aomori🚶Oirase Stream + Lake Towada One-Day Walking Route Many years ago, I was drawn to Aomori because of the Oirase Stream. Walking along the stream was really joyful. Hiking in the morning and then sitting by Lake Towada in the afternoon, just zoning out, made for a relaxing and healing day. Along the way, I even picked up a companion to join me. Due to hiking time constraints, we didn’t start at Ishigedo but chose to begin at Kumoi Falls. It takes just over 2 hours to reach Konokuchi, then we rested a bit and took a bus to Lake Towada (Shuyō). · 🚌 Transportation ✔ The bus from Aomori Station to Oirase Stream to Lake Towada is fully covered by the JR East Pass; just show the pass to the driver when boarding and alighting. ✔ It’s best to line up at Aomori Station half an hour before the morning bus departure. If there are many people, there will be two buses. We lined up half an hour early and got on the second bus. If you miss the second bus, there’s no other option. ✔ For the return from Lake Towada to Aomori Station, the 3 pm direct bus is recommended. The 4 pm bus transfers at Hachinohe and takes over an hour longer, which is more tiring. · 🚶My Route 1⃣ 8:10-10:25 Aomori Station - Kumoi Falls Start hiking along the stream, passing several waterfalls. Choshi Otaki is the largest. After Choshi Otaki, Konokuchi is not far. The total time is about 2 hours. Some people choose to hike from Ishigedo to Kumoi Falls (this section also has many waterfalls), then take a bus to Choshi Otaki, and hike to Konokuchi. The routes are similar. 🗺️ Map is in image 2. I think the most enjoyable part is hiking along the stream, so I chose the first route. There are many waterfalls, big and small. I didn’t meet the NPC grandpa who paints, but I did meet people sitting down eating lunch. Everyone was leisurely enjoying their holiday, which was wonderful. There are many different kinds of plants, and even the signposts have moss hats. 2⃣ At Konokuchi, you can have lunch and rest. There is also a shop selling souvenirs, yogurt drinks, and snacks. 3⃣ 13:30-13:45 Konokuchi 🚌 Lake Towada (Shuyō) After getting off the bus, start exploring Lake Towada. Walk along the lakeshore to the Otome Statue and the shrine. This lakeside walk is so comfortable. Lake Towada is beautiful beyond what photos can capture. There are lakeside snack shops, swan boats, and you can also take a sightseeing cruise. We didn’t have time, so we gave it up. Towada Shrine is a quiet shrine in the mountains, with a cute sign warning about bears. It’s even more beautiful when it snows (I really want to visit Aomori again when it’s snowy).
