While wandering around looking for breakfast in Tsuwano during a spring storm, I was brought to "C'est Bon," a cafe that just relocated here from neighboring Masuda City this February. The wind and rain were too fierce for me to take a picture, but the shop is a traditional Japanese house with Tsuwano's signature red Sekishu roof tiles. With slightly creaky floors, patterned glass windows, and earthen walls, it was a nostalgic space that perfectly preserves the Showa era vibe🏠 I ordered the toast morning set here. It's a single plate loaded with toast, salad, ham and eggs, and more. All this for around 800 yen. So cheap~🥺 You can choose from three types of toast: regular, raisin, or French toast. I went with the French toast. The egg batter was soaked all the way through, making it super soft, jiggly, and sweet🥰 I had been up since 4 AM and was exhausted from the wind and rain, so being able to eat a solid breakfast was exactly what I needed. ⁡⁡⁡Washihara Hachimangu Shrine is an ancient shrine with its origins in the Heian period. Later, the first lord of Tsuwano Castle, Yoshimi Yoriyuki, invited the deity from Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, and the third lord, Naoyori, built the shrine buildings on the present site and relocated the deity in 1387. ⛩ The three buildings—the main hall (1568), said to be the oldest building in the prefecture, the gate tower (1573), and the worship hall (1711)—are designated as Important Cultural Properties, showcasing late Muromachi period shrine architecture and a unique regional shrine structure. 👀 Furthermore, the shrine boasts the only remaining Yabusame (mounted archery) ground in Japan, approximately 270 meters long, preserving its ancient form. A Yabusame ritual is held there every year on the first Sunday of April. This time, I went to see that ritual. 🐎 The ground was constructed in the same year as the main hall. First of all, it's rare to find a permanent yabusame (mounted archery) ground in modern times, but the fact that the target area is built on a mound is also said to be an unprecedented design ✨️ Yabusame is a martial art in which archers, while riding horses, shoot arrows at targets set up in three locations. They pray for national prosperity, peace throughout the land, a bountiful harvest, and the eradication of disease while shouting "Yin and Yang." The yabusame ritual at Washihara Hachimangu Shrine has records dating back to the Edo period, and although it ceased after the Meiji era, it was revived in 1976 following a visit by Master Kiyoshin Ogasawara to the shrine, and continues to this day 😌 The event is held in two parts, morning and afternoon. Each part features three yabusame archers dressed in Kamakura-period hunting attire, and typically 12 mounted archers in lighter attire. The costumes are so cool…! 😳 The Shinto ritual proceeds as follows: offering of sacred objects → entering the riding grounds → transmission of orders → Yabusame (mounted archery). The progress and history of the ritual are announced as they occur, making it easy to follow. I also received a Goshuin (temple/shrine stamp) before it began. 👌 Finally, the Yabusame begins. While riding horses, archers shoot at targets approximately 54cm square (1 shaku 8 sun) spaced about 90m apart. Hitting all the targets is incredibly difficult. 🎯 Riding a horse, releasing both hands, nocking an arrow, and shooting the bow—all while galloping 90m… truly a masterful display of horse-and-rider unity, a highly trained skill. 🫣 I really admire archers. In the morning session, I think there were about three riders who hit all the targets. The hit targets were given away as lucky charms, and when I looked back, it was crowded with people. I saw Yabusame (mounted archery) live for the first time, and it was absolutely breathtaking. The sound of the horses kicking up sand and cutting through the wind, the sound of the bowstrings, the cracking of the targets, and the cheers of the crowd when a hit was made for a truly pleasant listening experience. 👂🎶 Yabusame is frequently depicted in the "Tsuwano Hyakkei-zu" (One Hundred Views of Tsuwano), a Japanese Heritage site. "Iwami Kagura" is a tradition passed down in the Iwami region of western Shimane Prefecture. Rooted in "Omoto Kagura," which was dedicated to agricultural deities, it has evolved into a highly entertaining popular performing art influenced by Noh and Kabuki. Originally a dance dedicated as a sacred Shinto ritual, it gained nationwide recognition at the 1970 Osaka Expo. Today, with performances held both domestically and internationally, it has also become a major tourism asset.✍️ Night Kagura performances are also held in Tsuwano Town. This time, I attended the Yozakura (night cherry blossom) performance on April 4th. It was initially scheduled outdoors, but due to a spring storm, it was moved indoors to the former domain school, Hanko Yorokan.☔️ Out of over 130 shachu and preservation societies (kagura groups) in the Iwami region, the Sabumi Shachu performed on this day. The programs were "Tenjin" and the star attraction of Iwami Kagura, "Orochi." Lucky me!🍀 Many Iwami Kagura programs are based on Japanese mythology and themes of rewarding good and punishing evil. "Tenjin" is the story of Sugawara no Michizane defeating Fujiwara no Tokihira. The fast, intense combat and quick costume changes made for a captivating performance.✨️ "Orochi," needless to say, is the famous tale of the deity Susanoo slaying the Yamata no Orochi (eight-headed serpent). The serpent bodies, crafted from Sekishu washi paper, raged wildly across the stage—the power and sheer intensity as they approached the audience were absolutely incredible.🐍 The fierce dancing to a light, upbeat tempo known as Hachiyoshi (eight-beat) created such an uplifting vibe that the audience naturally got into the groove. Yet, what’s truly amazing is how it retains the solemnity of a sacred ritual.👏 After the show, there was a hands-on experience session where they let me try on the Tenjin coat, and wow, it was heavy...! They told me the coat alone weighs nearly 20 kg (44 lbs). It's astonishing to think they were jumping around wearing this.😳 More than just dancing, the performance featured spectacular stage effects using smoke and fireworks, making it an incredibly vibrant and gorgeous Kagura. Since it was indoors, they couldn't use fireworks this time, so I definitely want to see those effects next time.🔥 Iwami Kagura is also designated as a Japan Heritage. In an era where local traditional arts are fading away, I felt quite envious seeing this tradition being so vibrantly passed down by numerous shachu groups.✨️ Coming from Nara, which also boasts many traditional performing arts, it made me feel the need to rethink how we preserve our heritage. I also learned the importance of an entire community coming together to promote its culture.😌 As of now, there are 5 Night Kagura performances remaining. For my stay in Tsuwano, I chose "Noren-yado Meigetsu," an inn with over a century of history. Tucked away in a narrow alley of the former fish market, this authentic Japanese-style ryokan offers a quiet and incredibly relaxing atmosphere 😌 Right as you step into the entryway, you're greeted by a display of antiques and traditional furnishings that showcase the inn's rich history. All the guest rooms are Japanese-style, and this time, I stayed in a room called "Sawarabi" on the second floor. Tatami mats, a tokonoma (alcove), earthen walls, a low table with floor chairs, and even a floor mirror—everything was traditional Japanese. Yep, this is exactly what a ryokan should feel like! It was so cozy that I ended up just lounging around the whole time _(:3」∠)_ While the room does have a private en-suite bathroom, nothing beats the large cypress wood bath ♨️ The staff mentioned, "It's not an actual hot spring, though..." but honestly, just soaking in a nice, warm bath is pure bliss 😌 Both breakfast and dinner are served at the adjoining kappo (traditional dining) restaurant, "Sekishintei." I went with the breakfast-only plan this time, but since a lot of local restaurants are closed on Sundays and Mondays, dining here for dinner would actually be a really smart move ☝️ The breakfast was absolutely amazing ✨ It featured grilled fish, pickles, small side dishes, eggs, yudofu (hot tofu), and miso soup. The wooden rice tub held about three bowls' worth of rice. I loved that the meal was filling yet gentle enough to ease my body into the morning ☺️ The tea served was Zara-cha (bean tea), a local Tsuwano specialty. The roasted bean aroma was just heavenly... 🍵 I was so wrapped up in the warm, cozy vibes while eating breakfast that I completely polished off the entire tub of rice 😇 The room attendant and the young landlady were both so friendly, making conversation really enjoyable. It felt less like a formal host-and-guest dynamic and more like catching up with friendly neighbors, which added to the charm 🥰 Since I was traveling solo, the best part was just being able to space out and take things at my own pace. Plus, it's super reasonably priced, making it perfect for a multi-night stay. Takatsuya Ito Hakusekido is a pharmaceutical wholesaler founded in 1798. They supplied medicinal herbs to the Mori family, who served as court physicians to the Tsuwano domain for generations, and also had ties to the renowned author Mori Ogai. This pharmacy is known for its herbal stomach medicine, "Ittōmaru," which was created in 1896 by the 5th generation owner, Rihei. It's said that this was given to Mori Ogai during the Russo-Japanese War, and he was delighted by its immediate effects... Made from over 10 kinds of herbal medicines, and containing many fragrant invigorating herbs, it protects the stomach and intestines from stress. Taking a small amount daily regulates the digestive system, and it's a welcome pill that works quickly even as a quick remedy. ☺️ It's effective for overeating, excessive drinking, indigestion, and loss of appetite, as well as nausea from hangovers, so it's a good idea for drinkers to have a box on hand. 😌 I was recommended it with the words, "It's good if you drink!", so I bought a 300-pill pack. It has a herbal scent, but it's easy to swallow without the strong smell or bitterness of something like Daranisuke! The shop itself has an old-fashioned atmosphere, and old medicine tools and furnishings are on display. In Tsuwano Town, there's an everyday tea called "Zara Tea" that has been enjoyed since the Edo period. This time, I visited "Koumien Kamiryo Chaho," a shop on Honmachi Street, to try it out🍵 Zara tea is made by drying and roasting a leguminous annual plant known as Kawaraketsumei. It boasts a roasted aroma similar to hojicha (roasted green tea) or black bean tea, along with a mild sweetness. Plus, it's caffeine-free, which is a great bonus✨️ The shop was originally founded at this spot by the great-grandfather of the current owner, Rumi Ricotta. It relocated during her grandparents' time and was on the brink of closure until Rumi took over the business to keep the legacy alive✍️ Nowadays, alongside the classic Zara tea, you can enjoy innovative blends infused with Japanese and Western herbs, as well as traditional Chinese medicines. With over 10 varieties always in stock, it's wonderful that you can sample the aromas before making a choice🥰 They also offer Zara tea beer and creative treats like snowballs and Basque cheesecake infused with Zara tea. I definitely want to try those on my next visit...! It’s been a month since I went, and I forgot to snap a picture of the menu, so the exact name escapes me (it was either Apple Cinnamon or something else I was torn between), but the Zara tea I had that day was absolutely delicious☺️ Also, perhaps because her husband is French, they served a quiche inspired by his hometown, which was incredibly tasty🤤 Truly an elegant tea time✨️ I picked up some tea bags as a souvenir, and I still keep a stash at work. Shusuien has been crafting tea since 1949 at the base of Mt. Aono, Tsuwano's iconic peak. I visited their weekend cafe to savor their signature teas, including the local specialty, Mame-cha 🍵 Located a short distance from the castle town, the Jikichi district is a lush area filled with rice paddies and tea fields. The buildings with their red Sekishu roof tiles stand out beautifully against the vibrant green landscape. This time, I took a scenic bike ride from Tsuwano Station 🚵♀️ Tsuwano was incredibly muggy, almost like a sauna. After working up a serious sweat pedaling my bike, I knew I had to get some shaved ice. Naturally, I went with the "Mame-cha" syrup ✨ By the way, Mame-cha (like the Zara-cha I mentioned in my last post) is an everyday tea in Tsuwano made from a legume called Kawaraketsumei. I love that it’s caffeine-free and packed with polyphenols ☺️ My order featured coarsely shaved ice drenched in Mame-cha syrup, topped with chewy shiratama (rice flour dumplings) and a generous scoop of red bean paste. It usually comes with fruit, but due to an allergy, I requested mine in a traditional, purely Japanese style 🍧 With the first crunchy bite, a toasted aroma hits your senses, followed by the gentle sweetness of the Mame-cha. Just like the brewed tea, it has a crisp, refreshing flavor that perfectly balances the red bean paste without being overly sweet—it’s absolutely delicious ‼️ For those with a sweet tooth, I highly recommend drizzling on some "Mame-cha syrup concentrate" for an extra kick. It comes with condensed milk, but personally, I say drench it in the Mame-cha concentrate to truly appreciate the tea's natural sweetness 🥳 Nara might be known as the mecca for shaved ice, but this is a flavor you can only experience—and absolutely must experience—in Tsuwano. Honestly, between the taste and the texture of the ice, I actually preferred this over some of the recent trendy spots in Nara 😘 After my icy treat, I enjoyed a cup of their premium Sencha green tea, "Suika." Unlike Mame-cha, this green tea boasts an extraordinary depth of umami. The "Gion Festival" is held in summer at Yasaka Shrine. I went to see it because they still perform the "Heron Dance" (Sagi Mai), a sacred performing art that has died out even at the Gion Festival of Kyoto's Yasaka Shrine✨ Yasaka Shrine's history began in 1428 when Hironobu Yoshimi relocated a shrine from the top of Mt. Taikodani to its current location to protect the castle's demon gate (northeastern direction). In 1528, Masayori Yoshimi formally invited a divided spirit from Kyoto to be enshrined there. The Heron Dance is performed at various locations in the town every year during the Gion Festival's Togyo (July 20) and Kangyo (July 27). Originally passed down from Kyoto's Gion-e to Yamaguchi's Gion-e, it was brought to Tsuwano in 1542 by Masayori Yoshimi. The tradition was temporarily suspended during the era of Sakazaki Dewa-no-kami. However, Koremasa Kamei, the second lord of the Tsuwano Domain, dispatched people to the Kyoto Gion-e in 1643 to learn their Heron Dance and revived it. It has been passed down to this day✨ Today, it is known as "the only remaining Heron Dance in Japan" and is designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. It is also registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage as one of the "Furyu-odori" dances remaining across the country🌍 Before the Heron Dance, the Baby Heron Dance (Kosagi-odori) is performed. The Baby Heron Dance by local elementary school students is incredibly cute😳 People from inns and shops gathered to catch a glimpse of their children and grandchildren's proud moments. Starting at 4:00 PM, the Heron Dance departs from the Community Center (Touya) and heads to Yasaka Shrine. Then, they make a loop around the town to the Otabisho (temporary resting place for the mikoshi) before returning to the Community Center🚶 I heard that the start time has been pushed back by an hour in recent years due to the extreme heat. But it was still so hot that I decided to only watch it at three locations this time: Yasaka Shrine, Takatsuya near my inn, and the Otabisho. The Heron Dance consists of 6 dancers (2 male/female herons, 2 baton twirlers, 2 kakko drum players), 8 musicians (2 each for taiko, bell, hand drum, and flute), several singers, 2 Touya (organizers), and 8 guards. Although they do not join the procession, there are also baby herons and large umbrella floats. What bird has landed on the bridge? A river heron, a river heron Yah, a river heron The heron crossed the bridge (built the bridge?) The heron crossed the bridge (built the bridge?) Soaking wet in the autumn shower In tune with this song, they shake and spread their wings, performing a dance that represents the courtship behavior of herons. The heron costume's head weighs about 3kg (6.6 lbs), and the wings weigh about 12kg (26.5 lbs). Performing this in the scorching heat is just unbelievable...! There are many highlights even before the Heron Dance, such as the fure-daiko (announcement drum) going around the town in the middle of the night (I was fast asleep for this), and the "Nidohan" (Two and a Half) where the Touya goes to pick up the Heron Dance troupe (I managed to see this one)👀 Between the Touya system (a system where the role of managing all events is rotated) and the sight of everyone poking their heads out of houses along the route to welcome the procession, it was wonderful to experience the atmosphere of a festival created by the entire town coming together🥳

"Genjimaki" is a must-try when visiting Tsuwano. It's a famous traditional confection that dates back to the end of the Edo period. Zenichiro, the owner of the official domain confectioner Mitsuma Jokando, is said to have created it and presented it to Koremi Kamei, the 11th lord of the Tsuwano domain. The name is said to be inspired by a famous poem from the "Wakamurasaki" chapter of The Tale of Genji: "Plucked in my hand, when might I see it? The young grass of the fields, akin to the purple root." It also seems to have a connection to Lord Koremi's wife, Mitsuko👀 There is another legend from the Genroku era. The 3rd lord, Korechika Kamei, was humiliated by Kira Kozuke-no-Suke and resolved to strike him down. Realizing this, the chief retainer Geki Tago cleverly curried favor with Kozuke-no-Suke, successfully avoiding a crisis. At that time, the "confection shaped like a wrapped gold coin" used as a gift to appease Kozuke-no-Suke became the prototype for Genjimaki. Well, that's another story told. Which one you believe is entirely up to you☝️ Genjimaki itself is an "an-maki" (bean paste roll) style sweet, where sweet red bean paste is wrapped in a pancake-like dough similar to dorayaki. In Tsuwano, there are about 7 to 8 shops making Genjimaki. Each has its own unique flavor, so it's a lot of fun to taste and compare them🥰 This time, I visited "Soke," a shop that has been dedicated to hand-baking Genjimaki since its establishment. You can find the shop right by the scramble crossing, with the stone torii gate of Taikodani Inari Shrine serving as a perfect landmark⭐️ The process involves spreading the batter on a hot iron griddle, placing smooth red bean paste in the center, and folding it over. The long roll is then cut and left to cool✨️ I heard this is the only shop where you can actually watch the hand-baking process right at the storefront☝️ If you happen to catch them at the right time, you absolutely have to try a freshly baked one. The warm, crispy texture of the dough's surface is a specialty you can only experience right off the griddle. Plus, it pairs incredibly well with cold Zara-cha (local roasted tea)🥰 Of course, it's just as delicious after some time has passed and the dough becomes soft and fluffy. The smooth red bean paste has the perfect amount of sweetness, making it a treat you could easily eat every day without getting tired of it. Though, for the sake of your health, maybe stick to just one a day😇 Since these don't have a very long shelf life at any shop (about a week at most), keep that in mind if you're buying them as souvenirs. Even though it's located in the inland town of Tsuwano, Fukuzushi is a highly popular restaurant known for its incredibly fresh and exquisite sushi. I decided to pay another visit to this local hotspot, following up on my trip there this past spring. 🚶 My goal for the day was "Ayu" (sweetfish), which is currently in season. However, because of the extreme heat wave, no fishing had been done, and the live fish tanks were completely empty... Fortunately, they had some frozen stock available, so I ordered the salt-grilled ayu this time around. While waiting for the fish to grill, I enjoyed their signature sushi and some local sake. Every piece of fish was so fresh and glossy. It paired perfectly with the sake! 🍶 It seems their pressed sushi is also quite popular, so I'd love to try that on my next visit. 🍣 Then came the highly anticipated salt-grilled ayu. First off, it looked absolutely stunning! 😳 The meat was tender and flaky, and the slight bitterness of the innards paired amazingly well with the sake—it was incredibly delicious...! I couldn't believe it tasted this good from frozen stock...? This is the new wing of Tsuwano Yutoriro. There was a matcha set in the room, and sake, genjimaki, tea, and coffee were available in the lobby on the first floor. The breakfast was also delicious!! Located on a small hill, you can get a panoramic view of Tsuwano city. There is a corridor of torii gates, but it is made up of stairs, so you have to walk quite a bit. It is popular with foreigners, so there were many people taking photos. On the way to the shrine, there was a sightseeing lift like the ones you would take at a ski resort, although I didn't ride it this time. It might be good for families with children.
