From the Red Brick Warehouse to Owani Onsen: A Sophisticated Day Trip on a Local Train.
🍎 "I don't want to go far today, but I still want that getaway feeling." For days like that, a trip to Owani via the Konan Railway from Hirosaki is highly recommended.
🌸 This time, I explored a route starting from the Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art (Red Brick Warehouse) → Chuo-Hirosaki Station → Owani → Daien-ji Temple → Mt. Chausu Park → Owani Bean Sprouts → and finally, Wanicome.
🧱 Starting at the Red Brick Warehouse
The journey begins at the Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art.
These red brick buildings, which retain the charm of the Taisho and Showa eras, will get you in the travel spirit just by snapping a few photos.
After soaking in some art, it's just a short walk to Chuo-Hirosaki Station.
🚃 Taking the Konan Railway to Owani
From here, hop on the Konan Railway Owani Line.
It’s a nostalgic local line, a world away from bustling city trains.
The 30-minute ride offers a changing view, and you’ll find yourself thinking, "I didn't realize it was this close" as the landscape shifts into the mountain scenery of Owani.
The train ride itself is one of the highlights of the trip.
⛩️ A Touch of History at Daien-ji Temple
Upon arriving at Owani Station, head straight to Daien-ji Temple.
As you step onto the temple grounds, the air turns peaceful, contrasting with the lively atmosphere of the hot spring town.
Take a slow stroll through the precincts and soak in the local history.
😘 Sometimes these "quiet moments" are what stick with you most after a trip.
🍁 Up to Mt. Chausu Park
Next, make your way to Mt. Chausu Park.
From the hilltop, you can see the entire hot spring town nestled among the mountains.
If you visit in autumn, the foliage is breathtaking. It's the perfect spot to take a panoramic photo of the town.
🍜 Lunch with Owani Bean Sprouts
After working up an appetite, try the local specialty: "Owani Bean Sprouts."
Their unique, crunchy texture is addictive. I had the Owani Bean Sprout Ramen for lunch.
And since I’m traveling by train... I treated myself to a midday beer.
That’s the true joy of a holiday! 🍺
♨️ Unwinding at "Wanicome"
The final stop is the "Wanicome" hot spring facility. There’s nothing like a soak after a day of walking.
🌸 Having experienced the history of Daien-ji, the hike at Mt. Chausu, and the local flavors, the hot spring feels even more rewarding.
I spent some time relaxing after my bath while waiting for the train back.
🚃 Back to Hirosaki
In the evening, I caught the Konan Railway back from Owani Station. The apple lantern train is the best 😀
‼️ Art in the morning at the Brick Warehouse.
Lunch is history, scenery, and local food in Owani.
Finally, a relaxing hot spring.
"You don't have to go far to feel like you've truly traveled."
That was my takeaway from the day.
From Hirosaki to Owani.
Next holiday, why not skip the car, hop on the local line, and take it slow? 🚃♨️
