Göschenenalp is located right above the Gotthard axis. You can take a train from Lucerne to Göschenen (1.5 hours, CHF 38) and then hop on the Göscheneralp bus (CHF 12 round trip, 20 minutes) to the dam. Sitting at an elevation of 1,790 meters, the lake is a hydroelectric reservoir surrounded by towering 2,000-meter mountain walls. The Devil's Bridge (Teufelsbrücke) is the historic crossing over the Schöllenen Gorge situated 3 km below. It features two centuries of stacked bridges, with the original 1830 span now preserved as a museum piece. I used Göschenen as my base camp, caught the first bus up at 7:00 AM, and hiked 3 km along the western shore to the Alp Stausee snack hut (closed on Wednesdays, cash only, rösti for CHF 18). From there, I headed to the cliff moss section: the north face of the Eggstock, where water seepage keeps the Sphagnum and Ctenidium mosses lush and green even during an August drought, as the trail narrows tightly between the rock face and the water. The actual "Devil's Bridge cliff moss" is located down in the lower gorge if you choose to descend, which is a separate 2-hour hike from Göschenen village, not accessible directly from the lake. I explored the lake in the morning and tackled the gorge in the afternoon. A quick heads-up on my mistakes: I assumed the Alp Stausee hut accepted credit cards, but it's cash only—make sure to bring at least CHF 40. Also, I hiked the west shore around 1:00 PM when the cliff was exposed to direct sunlight, leaving the moss looking brown. For vibrant green moss, it's best to go at dawn or around 5:00 PM. Would you prefer taking the bus straight to Göschenenalpsee to enjoy the shoreline and cliff moss while skipping the gorge, or would you add the Schöllenen Devil's Bridge descent for a touch of history?

Switzerland's Klausen Pass, at an elevation of 1,948 meters, connecting the cantons of Uri and Glarus, will reopen to traffic on May 1, 2026. The pass, which closes during winter, is reopening about two weeks earlier than originally planned. Starting from 8 a.m. on Friday, visitors will once again be able to drive through this scenic Alpine route. Klausen Pass is famous for its winding roads, magnificent mountain views, and picturesque natural scenery, making it a popular choice for self-driving tours, cycling, and sightseeing trips. The early reopening allows visitors to experience the beauty of the Swiss Alps in spring, admire the snow-capped peaks, and breathe the fresh mountain air. Other Alpine passes in the Uri region are also preparing to reopen. Gotthard Pass is expected to open in mid-May, while Oberalp Pass resumed traffic last Friday. Visitors interested in exploring Swiss mountain routes now have more options to plan their trips. The reopening of Klausen Pass offers an excellent opportunity for adventure and leisure journeys in the heart of the Alps.

#hellonewyear Wake to crisp Alpine air and frost catching on rooftops and fields. Begin with a short morning walk through the village, where chimneys smoke and the mountains feel close and protective. After breakfast, take a gentle trail along a river or valley floor, letting the cold sharpen the silence. Enjoy lunch indoors at a wooden chalet restaurant, then spend the afternoon reading, napping, or watching clouds shift from a window. As evening falls, step outside briefly for one last look at the peaks before ending the day with a simple, comforting dinner.

#hellonewyear Begin the day walking through pine forests just above the village, where paths are soft and the air smells of resin and earth. Follow a gentle trail to a clearing with mountain views, stopping for lunch on a bench or at a hut. Spend the afternoon wandering without a strict route, listening to wind and birds rather than people. Return as daylight fades, ending the evening wrapped in warmth and quiet.

#hellonewyear Let the day revolve around ascent and descent rather than distance. Take a cable car high into the mountains mid-morning, enjoying panoramic views without effort. Walk short paths at the top, stopping often for photos and air. Have lunch with a view, then linger until the light begins to soften. Descend slowly, watching valleys expand beneath you, and finish the evening in a cozy restaurant, letting altitude and quiet define the day.

#hellonewyear Begin with a lakeside walk near your base village, where church bells echo across still water and reflections ripple gently. After breakfast, follow a flat trail along the shore or valley floor, moving slowly and pausing often. Have lunch in a small inn, then spend the afternoon resting by the water or taking a short boat ride. As evening approaches, walk back through the village as lights turn on one by one, ending the day warm, unhurried, and grounded.

#hellonewyear Wake early in an Alpine village as mist lifts slowly from the valley. After breakfast, take a cable car that climbs through forest into open mountain air, where peaks appear and disappear behind drifting clouds. Walk an easy high-altitude trail, stopping often to take in silence and wide views. Enjoy lunch at a mountain hut, then spend the afternoon sitting, sketching, or simply watching light move across rock and snow. Descend in the late afternoon as shadows stretch, ending the day with a quiet dinner and deep Alpine stillness.

#hellonewyear Design the day around movement rather than destinations, starting with a scenic Swiss train journey through valleys and tunnels that open suddenly onto dramatic landscapes. Step off in a small town for coffee, a lakeside or riverside walk, and a relaxed lunch. Continue by cable car to a viewpoint where mountains feel close enough to touch, staying just long enough to let the scale sink in. As afternoon light softens, descend slowly and return by train, watching reflections appear in windows. End the evening in a cozy hotel, wrapped in warmth, letting the Alps replay quietly in your mind.

#europetrip Walking along ridges offers a sense of elevation without snow. Paths wind gently along grassy slopes, opening onto panoramic views of valleys below. The wind brushes lightly against your face, carrying scents of earth and wildflowers. Occasionally, small rocks and boulders mark your path, but the trail is manageable. Each step feels deliberate as the expansive landscape stretches in all directions, reminding you of the quiet grandeur of the Swiss Alps in summer or autumn.

#europetrip Early morning walks in the Alps reward patience. The first light turns peaks and valleys soft gold, while morning mist slowly lifts from the meadows. Birds chirp in the still air, and the world feels untouched. Walking slowly, you notice subtle details: dew on flowers, sparkling streams, and distant peaks catching light before the sun fully rises. It’s a walk that combines awe with tranquility, letting the vastness of the Alps settle gently into your senses.

#skitrip The train clicks and hums as it climbs through snow-dusted valleys, carrying a car full of giddy skiers. Boots tap, poles clatter, and laughter fills the air — everyone’s buzzing with anticipation of fresh powder and sharp turns. Every twist of the track brings them closer to the slopes, turning a simple journey into a thrilling prelude to the day’s adventure, where excitement builds with every passing mile.
