Patuxai is such an iconic spot in Vientiane. I always find myself going back there everytime I'm in town. Head up to the top and you’ll catch 360° views over Vientiane that are just 🤩. You can spy the dramatic Parliament building and the Vientiane Cabinet. It’s the kind of view that makes you just stop and soak it all in. Take some time to really figure out the best photo angles and really enjoy all the unique shapes, angles and details of the building. The Laos Art Museum is hands-down a must-visit in Vientiane! This place is absolutely stunning and even with sky-high expectations, I was still blown away when I visited 🤩. As soon as you walk into the grand main hall, you will be awe struck. Each room is packed with mind-blowing art - and in particular wood carvings. At first, I was a little concerned that all those wild sculptures were made from wood, but it turns out they are reclaimed or discarded wood—think old roots and gnarly bits most people would leave behind. Somehow, the “imperfections” make each piece even more amazing. It's also nice to see that sculptures and art not only embody Laos culture - including that of minority populations - but also draw on neighbouring country influences, and I even saw an Egyptian Sphinx. Most signs explaining the pieces are in Laos, English and Chinese language. Entrance is 220,000 kip (about USD 10) for tourists and 120,000 kip for locals. —Totally worth it. There’s also a 50,000 kip fee if you want the roundtrip electric shuttle bus, which honestly is a lifesaver since it zips you straight to the main building and back. I got my ticket in advance on Trip.com—fully refundable and flexible for 30 days from your chosen date. So really convenient, and as I'd flown in, I got a discount. Location: The museum is about 20km from downtown Vientiane. Public bus 23 will drop you at the entrance if you ask in advance, but be warned—the return stop is a 10-15 minute walk away. Buses to the museum leave from the central bus terminal. _ I spent three days and two nights in Vientiane, but after factoring in travel time, I really only had one full day to explore the city. Visiting in early April, daytime temperatures had already hit 39°C (102°F). It also happened to be their New Year, so getting a ride wasn't easy, and the rental shops recommended by my hostel host were all closed. Enduring that heat meant I couldn't walk for long, which was quite a struggle. Even so, Vientiane left a massive impression on me— it truly felt like a "Golden City." I used Wattay International Airport in Vientiane, the capital of Laos. Although it's one of the largest international airports in Laos, it's actually quite compact and simple, making it easy to navigate even for first-time travelers. To get to the airport, you can access it by public bus from around the Thalasao Bus Terminal in the city center. The bus stop for the airport is relatively easy to find, the fare is cheap, and it's a convenient mode of transportation for travelers. The bus I used was also used by many locals, and it was impressive to see that it's used not only by tourists but also as a daily means of transportation. Upon arriving at the airport, the building itself isn't particularly large, but the exterior has the solid feel of a proper international airport. The check-in counter area is relatively compact, with counters lined up by airline. It gets a little crowded during peak hours, but it doesn't seem to have the extremely long queues you'd find at a large airport. When proceeding with departure procedures, there can be quite a long queue at the baggage inspection area depending on the time of day. This time, too, there was a certain amount of waiting time before security screening. Because the airport itself is compact, it can feel a little cramped when there are many people. Therefore, if you are using an international flight, it is probably best to arrive with some extra time to spare. Once inside the restricted area, there were several shops open, and they were selling products that gave a sense of Laos. What was particularly impressive was that they were selling Beerlao, a representative Laotian beer brand. This might be a nice touch for those who want to enjoy one last taste of Laos before departing. The prices are a little higher than in the city, but it is still enjoyable as a way to end your trip. The area around the boarding gates is quite simply designed, and there aren't that many seats. However, overall it was clean, and we were able to wait for boarding time calmly without any major confusion. It's not an airport where you can expect luxurious lounges or large duty-free shops, but it's compact, the distances between stations are short, and it's a very easy-to-use airport. Overall, Wattay International Airport gave me the impression of being a "simple and practical international airport with all the necessary facilities." It functions perfectly as a gateway to Laos, and I feel it's an airport that even first-time visitors to Vientiane can use with confidence. Review of a 2-day, 1-night trip to Vientiane, Laos. This trip was fun and complete with sightseeing, relaxation, and delicious food. It started with booking train tickets through the D-Ticket app of the State Railway of Thailand for both the outbound and return journeys. 🚊 I chose Saraburi as my departure station and Vientiane (Khamsavath) as my destination. I opted for a second-class, air-conditioned lower berth, costing 839 baht. There are several train options available: Air-conditioned lower berth: 839 baht Upper berth: 749 baht Air-conditioned seated: 539 baht Fan-cooled seated: 266 baht Outbound journey: The train departed Bangkok at 9:25 PM and arrived at Saraburi Station at 11:12 PM. They had already prepared the bedding, pillows, and blankets. The air conditioning was very cold, so I recommend bringing a warm jacket to sleep in. The train arrived at Nong Khai Station around 7 AM. At this station, we had to get off to get our passports stamped. Immigration (departing from Thailand), then get back on the same train carriage to cross the border to Vientiane Station (Khamsavad). Immigration again, fill out the entry documents + 20 Thai baht. I'll walk out to the front of the station where there are minibuses going into the city. The destination is probably the Vientiane Bus Terminal, near the Morning Market. · First place to go: That Dam Stupa and Hichillico Cafe’, a coffee shop in the middle of Vientiane with a view of That Dam Stupa. It's renovated from an old French-style house with a vintage feel, giving it a mystical atmosphere. There's an indoor area that retains the original furniture and walls, giving a retro feel, and an outdoor area perfect for enjoying coffee and admiring the That Dam Stupa. · Next, visit Wat Ong Teu Maha Viharn, the largest temple in Vientiane. It houses a bronze Buddha statue in the Maravijaya posture. Admission is free. · Stop for some beef pho, following in the footsteps of Note Udom. It's similar to our clear beef noodle soup, served with a side of vegetables. There are many ingredients. · Sathiti Cafe & Bar (ສະຖິຕິ ກາເຟ): The storefront is pretty and cute, with a narrow door. Inside, you can sit and eat. · Wat Sisaket: I was amazed by the thousands of Buddha images in small niches, which I think are called "clogs." · Haw Phra Keo (Emerald Buddha Temple): Located near Wat Sisaket, it's probably more of a museum, as it houses a collection of ancient artifacts and important Buddha images from all over the country. Photography is prohibited inside Haw Phra Keo. · Check in to Athenee Hotel Vientiane (booked through Trip.com). Unpack, wait for the sun to set, and then we'll go out… · Patuxai Arch: A landmark of Vientiane, grand and beautiful. You can pay an entrance fee to see the panoramic view of Vientiane from the top. · Nem Nuong Si Hom: This restaurant's Nem Nuong is delicious, with accompanying vegetables. I ordered it with fried spring rolls. · After eating, we returned to the hotel, showered, changed clothes, and went to find a place to have a drink. We chose a bar called "Kodang" (Warehouse) because it was close to the hotel and we could walk there and back. The bar had a vibe similar to bars in Thailand because the singer only sang Thai songs. We went back to the hotel to sleep at 2 AM. Day 2 🫢 Woke up a bit late because we drank a little too much last night. Had lunch: · Som Tum (papaya salad) in an alley. I called a taxi through the InDrive app (I recommend downloading it!). It was cheap and easy to use. Recommended dishes: Szechuan Som Tum, Luang Prabang Som Tum, fried chicken wings, sticky rice. · Khao Jee Pateh (grilled sticky rice with various toppings). I was actually full, but I wanted to order one piece with everything in it. Even after cutting it in half, it was still huge! · Pha That Luang. You haven't really been to Vientiane if you don't visit Pha That Luang. In the same area, there are also Wat That Luang Nuea (North) and Wat That Luang Tai (South). There are also shops selling souvenirs and gifts. Then, I called a taxi via the app to the Laos-Thailand train station in Vientiane, Khamsawat. I went through immigration, filled out the departure documents, and had 20 baht with me. The train departed Vientiane at 6:25 PM and arrived at Nong Khai station. I got off to get my passport stamped again on the Thai side. This time, I had to take all my luggage with me to go through the scanner. I arrived in Saraburi around 5:30 AM. Recommendations: 1. Download the InDrive app for calling taxis. 2. I recommend exchanging money for Lao Kip at Khamsawat train station.
