If you’d told me one bus journey could take me from medieval streets to the seaside in the same day, I probably wouldn’t have believed you. But that’s exactly what happened with our little trip to Canterbury and Tankerton. We started the morning in Canterbury, and it honestly felt like walking onto a film set. Cobbled streets, wonky old buildings, hidden lanes and loads of independent cafes dotted about. We didn’t have much of an itinerary and I think that’s what made it so good. We just wandered, grabbed a coffee, ducked into a few shops and soaked it all in. If you’re visiting, definitely make time for Canterbury Cathedral, even if you only admire it from the outside, it’s seriously impressive. We also loved wandering down The King's Mile with all its quirky independent shops and stopping by Westgate Gardens for a peaceful riverside stroll. After a few hours, we hopped on the bus to Tankerton, and the change of scenery was unreal. One minute you’re surrounded by centuries of history, the next you’re looking out at the sea with colourful beach huts lining the promenade. It was peaceful without being boring, and there were loads of people out walking their dogs, having ice creams or just sitting by the water. While you’re there, don’t miss the famous The Street, Tankerton, a natural shingle spit that stretches out into the sea when the tide’s low. It’s such a unique spot and makes for some brilliant photos. The beach huts along the front are also ridiculously cute. Of course, no British seaside trip is complete without fish and chips. We found a proper local chippy, ordered a big portion and took it down to the seafront. Eating fresh fish and chips while watching the waves roll in just hits differently. The only problem? The seagulls clearly wanted some too. One thing I didn’t expect to enjoy as much was travelling by bus. There’s something quite nice about sitting by the window and watching Kent slowly change from historic town to coastline. It felt relaxed, easy and way less stressful than driving. What I loved most about this day out was that it didn’t need any big attractions or expensive tickets to be memorable. It was just a genuinely lovely mix of exploring, good food and sea air. If you’re after a low-effort day trip that feels like you’ve packed loads into one day, Canterbury and Tankerton are such an underrated duo. Whitstable is a fairly quiet town. There are no noisy roadside markets or joyful amusement parks. It is only lively because of the crowds at the port. The port is actually quite small, but there are many seafood stalls to choose from, as well as a small art market. You can also buy boat tickets for a boat trip, or buy crab catching tools and go crabbing near the port. There are more kayaks and sails near the harbor. Later I learned that next to the port is England’s oldest and largest yacht club (Whitstable Yacht Club), which is why there are so many sea activity enthusiasts. Stroll and chat along the beach, enjoying the beautiful view of the blue sea and sky. Along the way, you can see many tourists sunbathing and swimming at the beach. There are even beach huts (Tankerton beach huts) available for rent.

My favorite travel destination near London is...💗 It's a seaside town called Whitstable.🌊 It's full of cute souvenir shops and stores, and I loved taking leisurely strolls along the beach! 🐚🪸🛋️🦪 I always traveled within the UK during the summer. That's because the weather here is nice and not as hot as other countries. 🌤️ While looking for places to go this time, I found this beautiful place and it became my new favorite place.☺️ Out of all the restaurants, this was the one I've been wanting to visit the most💗 I had high expectations and it was truly amazing! One of my favourite places to enjoy a coffee and a walk. Whitstable bay will always be the perfect option as there is a boarded walkway by the seafront which makes the walk super easy. It’s great looking over to the oyster farms at sea and really see the local oysters. Whitstable is famous for its oysters and there are numerous shacks by the seafront which sell local oysters or fancy restaurants in the town to choose.

Whitstable is an amazing place, the local people are friendly and there are interesting shops. Highly recommend trying oysters and the catch of the day with chips. We sat by the water and watched the sunset with wine and I felt like I was on holiday in a different country! It's hard to believe this is the UK but I'd definitely go back and maybe stay a night to experience the night life and live music.
