Huaihua|June Misty Rain in Western Hunan, Slow Time in a Thousand-Year-Old Ancient City
🌧️ Who says summer must be sunny? The plum rain season in Huaihua is the right way to experience Western Hunan.
Many say not to come to Huaihua in June because of the rain. But I have fallen in love with the misty rain here — the bluestone roads glisten wet from the rain, the sunken houses in Hongjiang Ancient Commercial City are shrouded in mist, the Furong Tower in Qianyang Ancient City looks even more poetic in the drizzle, and the creek flows gently under the Dong ethnic wind and rain bridges. Walking through the thousand-year-old ancient city with an oil-paper umbrella feels like traveling back to the Ming and Qing dynasties.

🏯 Hongjiang Ancient Commercial City|A Living Qingming Riverside Scene
China’s first ancient commercial city, with 380 well-preserved Ming and Qing buildings.
This is not a water town like Wuzhen or Zhouzhuang, but a true "commercial city" — the southwest metropolis of the Ming and Qing periods, complete with escort agencies, banks, shops, brothels, and inns, like a living museum of Ming and Qing commerce.
👣 Must-visit spots
▫️ Tax Bureau: The tax office of the time, grand architecture with exquisite wood carvings
▫️ Shaoxing Brothel: An ancient brothel preserving original furnishings, offering insight into the culture of the time
▫️ Escort Agency: See the life of ancient escorts and martial arts performances
▫️ Bank: Experience exchanging ancient silver notes, very interesting
▫️ Misty Rain Hongjiang District: Newly built antique-style buildings, especially beautiful when lit up at night
🎭 Immersive experiences
▫️ Ancient Costume City Tour: Rent a set of Ming and Qing clothing (50 RMB/set), walk on the bluestone roads, instantly become a young lady of the Republic era
▫️ "A Generation of Hong Merchants" Live Show: Evening performance telling the legendary story of the Hongjiang merchant guild, with stunning lighting and stage effects
▫️ Traditional Handicrafts: Learn to make oil-paper umbrellas and batik with local artisans, take home a handmade souvenir
💡 Tips:
▫️ Admission 90 RMB, be sure to hire a guide (80 RMB/session), otherwise it’s just looking at old buildings without hearing the stories, which is a waste
▫️ Few people on rainy days, no waiting for photos, the misty rain atmosphere is perfect
▫️ Recommended to spend 3-4 hours, only by strolling slowly can you appreciate the charm of the ancient commercial city

🏮 Qianyang Ancient City|A Poetic Ancient City 900 Years Older than Fenghuang
The birthplace of Wang Changling’s "A Pure Heart in a Jade Pot," with 2,200 years of history.
This ancient city is really low-key! It is 1,400 years older than Lijiang Dayan Ancient Town and 900 years older than Fenghuang Ancient City, yet it is almost uncommercialized, with indigenous residents still living inside, full of everyday life.
🚶 Ancient city walking route
Zhongzheng Gate → Nanzheng Street → Furong Tower → Longbiao Scenic Spot → Confucian Temple → Riverside Sunset
▫️ Furong Tower: The core of the ancient city, where Wang Changling sent off Xin Jian, beautiful gardens, precious inscriptions
▫️ Nanzheng Street: Thousand-year-old bluestone road, lined with Ming and Qing buildings, local shops run by residents with authentic flavor
▫️ Bell and Drum Tower: The highest point of the ancient city, climb up to overlook the entire city and Wushui River
▫️ Riverside: Sit under the ancient city wall at dusk, watch the sunset on the Wushui River, fishing boats passing by, very healing
🍵 Slow life in the ancient city
▫️ Find an old teahouse on Nanzheng Street, drink a cup of Yuanling Jietan tea, listen to the owner tell stories of the ancient city
▫️ Watch grandmas making zongzi at the door, 5 RMB each, fresh meat filling is delicious
▫️ Evening stroll by the river, locals fishing, swimming, chatting, the pace of life is very slow
💡 Tips: The ancient city is free! Only Furong Tower charges admission. It’s recommended to stay in a guesthouse inside the ancient city, very quiet at night.
