In Seoul, it's easy to glance at a map and think, "Oh, it's all downtown, we can just walk it." Only to realize later that trying to cram Bukchon, Hongdae, and Gangnam into a single walking tour is a terrible idea. That's why it's much more practical to look at Seoul as clusters of neighboring areas rather than just a checklist of landmarks. HISTORIC CENTER + CENTRAL SEOUL 01 • JONGNO Where: North of the city center Why: Palaces and historic Seoul This is home to Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, and the bulk of your classic first-time itinerary. 02 • BUKCHON Where: Between Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung Why: Hanoks and traditional streets This isn't some far-off district; it's the logical continuation of your day in Jongno. It's best paired with the palaces. 03 • INSADONG Where: South of Bukchon Why: Traditional culture, shopping, teahouses Another piece of the same historic zone. Jongno → Bukchon → Insadong flow perfectly into a single-day itinerary. 04 • IKSEONDONG Where: East of Insadong Why: Hanoks + modern lifestyle The traditional houses here have been taken over by cafes, restaurants, and boutiques. Don't confuse it with Bukchon: while both areas feature hanoks visually, the vibes are completely different. 05 • MYEONGDONG Where: South of the historic center Why: Shopping, K-beauty, street food, convenient home base From here, you're getting closer to Namsan. It makes sense to pair Myeongdong with Namdaemun, Namsan, and Euljiro—not Hongdae. 06 • EULJIRO Where: Between Myeongdong and Jongno Why: Old commercial Seoul + bars + cafes By day, the area can feel quite utilitarian, but come evening, certain streets completely transform. It's a handy transition zone between the historic center and Myeongdong. BUILDING YOUR ROUTES 🏯 History: Gyeongbokgung → Bukchon → Insadong → Ikseondong 🛍 Downtown: Myeongdong → Euljiro → Namsan The biggest mistake is treating these six names as six distant districts. In reality, many of them are right next to each other and should be bundled into a single route. WEST, EAST, AND SOUTH SEOUL This is where distance becomes a factor. You can't just blindly tack these areas onto your historic center plans simply because everything looks close on the macro map of Seoul. 07 • HONGDAE Where: West of the center Why: Youth culture, shopping, live music, nightlife It makes the most sense to save Hongdae for the late afternoon and evening. 08 • YEONNAM-DONG Where: Right next to Hongdae Why: Cafes and a more laid-back stroll People constantly treat these as two separate destinations, but for a tourist, the most logical flow is: Yeonnam-dong → Hongdae → evening in Hongdae. 09 • ITAEWON Where: South of Namsan Why: Restaurants, bars, international vibe This is neither Myeongdong nor Gangnam. Itaewon is located north of the Han River. 10 • HANNAM-DONG Where: East of Itaewon Why: Galleries, restaurants, boutiques Hannam and Itaewon are easy to group together. However, due to the hilly terrain, distances here can feel a lot longer than they look on the map. 11 • SEONGSU Where: East Seoul, north of the Han River Why: Pop-up spaces, trendy brands, cafes, Seoul Forest Seongsu is often lumped in with Gangnam as the "trendy new Seoul," but geographically, they are entirely different zones on opposite sides of the river. 12 • GANGNAM Where: South of the Han River Why: Modern metropolis, shopping, business districts Gangnam is massive. Tourist spots within the southern part of Seoul can also be spread far apart, so you shouldn't think of "Gangnam" as just one compact, walkable street. KEEP THESE 4 CLUSTERS IN MIND 🏯 Jongno + Bukchon + Insadong + Ikseondong Historic Seoul 🌃 Hongdae + Yeonnam-dong Cafes → shopping → evening 🍷 Itaewon + Hannam Restaurants → galleries → bars ☕ Seongsu + Seoul Forest Trends → pop-ups → walking As for Gangnam, it's best to plan it as an entirely separate block. 💡 The most useful habit when planning a Seoul itinerary: first, check which side of the Han River and which part of the city a neighborhood is in, and only then add it to your route. That way, instead of spending half your day on the subway, you'll actually get to enjoy a proper walking tour.

Longing for the scent of the forest in the sweltering midsummer heat, I visited the ASEAN Natural Recreation Forest in Yangju, located within an hour's drive from the Seoul metropolitan area. Reservations are mandatory through the National Natural Recreation Forest website. Although it isn't easy to secure a spot, if you manage to book, I believe a recreation forest is truly the best value weekend family getaway course. In particular, this ASEAN Natural Recreation Forest stands out from other recreation forests by incorporating the unique characteristics of various East Asian countries such as Vietnam, Myanmar, and Indonesia. I loved it because it is nestled deep in the mountains, offering a quiet environment where you can blow away the stress of daily life through the fresh scent of air amidst the dense trees and the sound of crickets. Additionally, with hands-on activities such as woodworking and forest explanations available, it was truly excellent for family visits. Being a national facility, it is neatly and well-maintained, and I appreciated the quiet atmosphere since entry is restricted to those with reservations. I hope you create wonderful memories by strolling with your companions at night, gazing at the sky and feeling the fresh night air. 🤗Tip - Reservations are mandatory at the National Natural Recreation Forest website. I had such a satisfying and delicious meal of their refreshing clam kalguksu. The 2nd branch is housed in a brand-new building with plenty of parking, making it more than twice the size of the original. 📍 Recommended Menu The Shredded Radish Salad Bibimbap is a must-try when you visit Milbat Kalguksu. It was the last day of their 3rd-anniversary event (50% off all menu items from 11/11 to 11/15 two years ago), so the parking lot and waiting area were packed with people…🔥 🚘 Parking There’s a spacious free parking lot in front of the restaurant (fits over 60 cars!). #summervacay Sapae Mountain in Yangju totally flew under my radar, until now. Decided to check it out on a whim, and it ended up being the perfect chill-but-still-sweaty kind of hike. The trail starts mellow, weaving through pine trees and soft dirt paths. No major crowds either, which was a big win. Just birds, breeze, and that peaceful mountain hum. As you climb, things do get steeper, some rocky sections and switchbacks that’ll wake your legs up, but nothing too wild. What really surprised me was the view from the top. Sapae Peak has this wide-open lookout where you can see mountains rolling off into the distance and tiny towns below. Super peaceful, with space to sit and soak it in. It’s not flashy or famous, but that’s the charm. Great for solo hikers or anyone looking for a mental reset without battling weekend trail traffic. Bring snacks, take your time, and let Sapae do its quiet magic. Hidden gem for sure.
