Where to go on a 500 budget in August? This reverse travel plan is easy to pull off
In August, your social feed is full of guides with a 500 per person budget, but when you check them out, they’re all influencer hotspots with two-hour lines and five-minute photo ops. Where should true budget travelers go? I picked eight places. You can get there by high-speed train within 2 hours or take an old green train for an overnight ride. The experiences range from wild wetlands to ancient city life, and none of these places are overrated — August is just the right time to visit them.
01 Xianning | Hubei
🔍 Is the Chibi ancient battlefield worth a special trip?
If you’re not into the Three Kingdoms, it’s not worth it. The ticket isn’t cheap, and there are many newly built replica ancient buildings inside. The most valuable sight is the cliff inscription. But if you’re passing by or near Wuhan, you can see it all in an afternoon.
🍜 On the street outside the park, there’s a small restaurant called “Zhou Lang Fish House.” Their braised fish offal hot pot is 38 yuan and tastes ten times better than anything inside the park.
⚠️ After 4 PM, there are fewer people. The light hits the river at an angle, making the “Chibi” characters on the cliff clearly visible.
🚄 Take the high-speed train from Wuhan to Xianning North Station, then a 30-minute taxi ride. For lodging, stay near Wenquan Road in Xianning city center. You can soak in a hot spring at night (public pools cost just a few dozen yuan), which is more cost-effective than staying near the park.
02 Suqian | Jiangsu
📍 Hongze Lake Wetland Park is just at the tail end of lotus season in August.
Walking into the reed marsh, the mix of water vapor and grassy scent hits you, and the wooden boardwalk creaks underfoot. Take an electric boat through the lotus clusters. The boatwoman will point out wild duck nests, and sometimes egrets fly overhead.
⏰ Arrive before 8 AM to enjoy the cool air and catch the lingering morning mist. Photos look like movie stills.
⚠️ Don’t rent pedal boats—they’re tiring and expose you to the sun. Buy the park’s combined transport ticket for 40 yuan to ride electric boats and buses, saving effort.
For lodging, I highly recommend homestays in the “Wetland Resort” area. Open your window to water views and fall asleep to frog sounds. It’s a bit pricier than the city but saves travel time and is worth it.
03 Shangrao | Jiangxi
Sanqingshan, Wuyuan Jiangwan, Guifeng, Huangling — four spots, how to choose on a budget?
If you have only two days: Day 1, visit Sanqingshan. Day 2, morning at Huangling, then head back in the afternoon. Sanqingshan is a hardcore hike. After taking the cable car up, walk the plank roads. The granite peaks appear and disappear in the mist. The views are stunning, and the hike is truly tiring.
⚠️ If your stamina is average, the West Coast plank road is easier than Nanqing Garden and just as scenic.
Huangling’s autumn drying season actually starts in August (though not in full swing), but the Hui-style old buildings and terraced fields on Tianjie Street are very photogenic. Wuyuan Jiangwan feels too commercial, tickets are expensive, so I don’t recommend it much.
🍜 At the mountain base, don’t miss the farmhouse dishes “hu tofu” and “steamed pork with rice flour.” You can eat your fill for about 30 yuan per person.
🚄 There’s a direct bus from Shangrao Station to Sanqingshan, about 40 minutes. For lodging, choose a homestay at the foot of Sanqingshan. Book early, as prices rise on August weekends.
04 Huangnan | Qinghai
Kanbula National Park is at its most beautiful in August.
The Yellow River bends here, and the Danxia landforms are so green it’s hard to believe — like spilled paint on the Tibetan Plateau. Drive up the winding mountain road to the viewing platform. Prayer flags flap in the wind, and below is the emerald Lijiaxia Reservoir.
⏰ From 4 to 6 PM, the sunlight dyes the ridges golden red, perfect for photos.
⚠️ If driving, it’s about 2 hours from Xining, but the last mountain road is narrow, so be careful when passing other cars. If you don’t have a car, join a day tour from Xining for under 200 yuan per person, including tickets and lunch, which is hassle-free.
For lodging, stay in a Tibetan guesthouse in Kanbula town. It’s basic but clean, and you can stargaze at night. Avoid staying inside the park — it’s expensive and has no signal.
05 Qiqihar | Heilongjiang
Zhalong Ecotourism Area’s highlight in August is the red-crowned crane release — once at 10 AM and once at 3 PM daily.
Stand on the crane viewing platform as dozens of red-crowned cranes fly up from the reeds. The wind from their flapping wings hits your face, creating a solemn atmosphere that no phone camera can capture.
If you’re with elderly or children, just walk the wooden boardwalk inside the park. It’s 3 to 4 km round trip on flat ground and not tiring. For photographers, the afternoon session is better, with soft light and backlighting that creates golden edges on the cranes.
🍜 After watching the cranes, don’t rush off. On the street near the park exit, there’s a “Old Northeast Iron Pot Stew” restaurant. Try the stewed goose with potatoes and pancakes dipped in soup. It costs about 40 yuan per person.
⚠️ Mosquitoes are abundant in August. Long pants and mosquito repellent are essential.
06 Kaifeng | Henan
Start from Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden and explore nearby walkable spots.
📍 The ticket to Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden is expensive (120 yuan), but the live show “Great Song: Dream of Tokyo” inside is worth it.
⚠️ If you’re not interested in ancient-style performances, skip the park and head to “Qishengjiao” next door, a free ancient-style street with teahouses and snack stalls. The atmosphere is good.
Walk 15 minutes east from Qishengjiao to Iron Pagoda Park. The pagoda is an original Song Dynasty structure. Tickets are 20 yuan. It’s quiet to sit under the pagoda. Another 10 minutes south is Daxiangguo Temple. Tickets are 40 yuan. The wooden carving of the thousand-hand Guanyin is worth seeing, but the temple is crowded and busy in August, so you can skip it.
🍜 Near Bao Gong Temple, there’s “Xisi Night Market” with lamb stuffed buns, fried cold noodles, and almond tea. You can eat your fill for about 30 yuan per person. For lodging, choose a homestay in Longting District, close to Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden, convenient for night strolls.
07 Guyuan | Ningxia
Xumishan Grottoes are hidden in loess valleys. In August, the temperature difference between morning and night is large. It’s scorching during the day but dry.
It’s a one-hour drive from Guyuan city. Along the way, barren hills suddenly give way to an oasis. The grottoes are carved into red sandstone. The largest Maitreya statue is 20 meters tall. Looking up makes your neck sore.
⏰ Morning visits are recommended when sunlight hits the grottoes directly, revealing details clearly. In the afternoon, the light is blocked by nearby mountains.
⚠️ Take the electric shuttle inside the park. Walking up takes half an hour uphill, so save your energy. Tickets are 60 yuan, half price with a student ID.
For lodging, I recommend guesthouses in “Old Town Alley” in Guyuan city. It’s close to the night market, where you can try authentic Guyuan lamb skewers for 2 yuan each.
08 Qinhuangdao | Hebei
Beidaihe and Shanhaiguan are busy in August, but if you choose the right routes, you can still enjoy a relaxed trip.
📍 Avoid the crowded Laohushi Park in Beidaihe. Walk east to the free beach next to “Pigeon Nest Park.” It’s half as crowded, with fine sand and shells to collect at low tide.
⏰ Arrive at 5:30 AM to watch the sunrise and catch the tide.
Shanhaiguan is best at Laolongtou, where the Great Wall meets the sea — a breathtaking sight.
⚠️ Don’t buy combo tickets. Just visit Laolongtou and the First Pass Under Heaven. Other spots feel too artificial.
For lodging, choose the Liu Village homestay area by the Beidaihe coast. It’s a 5-minute walk to the beach and half the price of hotels. Book early for August, as weekend prices double.
Budget travel in August — don’t follow the crowd to those influencer cities. These eight places are accessible by high-speed train, old green train, or bus, and you can keep your spending under 500 per person easily. Which affordable, high-value spots have you tried?
