When visiting the Ice and Snow City, be sure to spend a day taking your kids to this fairy tale town! This place is a movie filming location, featuring a railway crossing, old train station, oil painting village, hillside… the snowy scenery is stunning, and spending a day here with kids is super healing~ 📍Hengdaohezi 🚄 Transportation: From Harbin Station ➡️ Hengdaohezi East Station, only 1.5 hours by high-speed train, comfortable and smooth, kids won’t feel tired (Recommended to take the 8:05 AM high-speed train and return at 6:08 PM, a full day is enough, and if you have more time, staying overnight is also great—the town’s night view is beautiful) 🗺️ Kid-friendly direct route! Hengdaohezi Siberian Tiger Park (watch tigers with kids, very impressive) ➡️ Railway Crossing (green trains pass by, great for dynamic family photos) ➡️ Russian-style Town (stroll among Russian architecture, let kids experience exotic vibes) ➡️ Hengdaohezi Station (Russian vintage-style train station, full of nostalgic charm) ➡️ Hillside (overlook the entire town) ➡️ Church of the Nativity Village ➡️ Oil Painting Village (rich artistic atmosphere, let kids feel the beauty of art) (If you want to shoot blue hour photos, save the hillside for last; if not shooting night scenes, just follow the above route) ✔️ Hengdaohezi Siberian Tiger Park (🎫50 RMB/person, sightseeing bus 10 RMB/person, free for kids under 1.2 meters) Very close to the East Station, take the sightseeing bus for a round trip, you can see tigers 🐅 on both sides of the bus. After getting off, you can feed them in the walking area 🥩 (feeding requires an extra fee, about 20 RMB/portion). Don’t buy too much, as the meat will freeze in the cold. Kids get very excited watching the tigers. ✔️ Railway Crossing Green trains pass by here, great for taking dynamic photos with kids. Remember to stay safe and keep away from the tracks. ✔️ Hengdaohezi Station Russian vintage-style train station with red walls and white roofs, stunning in the snow. Taking family photos here is very memorable. ✔️ Hillside (🎫30 RMB/person, free for kids under 1.2 meters) Easy to find by following signs. From the hillside, you can overlook all of Hengdaohezi: mustard-yellow houses, smoking chimneys, the popular swing, and small wooden huts 🛖. Every shot is beautiful. (Come after noon; the swing is backlit in the morning, which doesn’t photograph well.) The town is small, perfect for walking slowly with kids. Some paths are covered in fresh snow with no footprints, creating an amazing atmosphere! ⚠️ Family travel tips: Hengdaohezi is really cold, dress kids warmly with down jackets, fleece pants, snow boots, gloves, scarves, and hats—all essential; bring a thermos to keep kids drinking warm water anytime; dining options in town are limited, so prepare some snacks and fruit in advance.

Recently went to Harbin with friends❄️ As a southerner stepping into the northern country for the first time, I was truly shocked by the winter here. Adorable big snowmen, masterfully crafted ice sculptures, and European-style buildings that look like castles. If this is your first time traveling to Harbin, I recommend directly copying this 4-day, 3-night itinerary🚶 · 🗺️Travel itinerary: 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟏: Songhua River Bridge ➠ Central Street ➠ Saint Sophia Cathedral 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟐: Hongzhuan Street Morning Market ➠ Music Corridor ➠ Bund Snowman Pier ➠ Ice and Snow World 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟑: Hengdaohezi Day Trip 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟒: Harbin Pharmaceutical Sixth Factory ➠ Northeast-style Bathhouse · ❶ Songhua River Bridge Navigate to "Zhongdong Railway Bridgehead Fortress." The sunset blue hour is really beautiful, and the iron bridge over the river looks cinematic in any casual photo🌉 ❷ Central Street Filled with European-style architecture all along, perfect for walking and taking photos. The roads can be slippery in winter, so remember to wear shoes with good traction. ❸ Saint Sophia Cathedral Especially beautiful when lit up at night, creating a great atmosphere✨ The interior of the cathedral is open for visits. ❹ Hongzhuan Street Morning Market Get up early to experience the most authentic Harbin life here. ❺ Music Corridor Big Snowman The big snowman is super cute and great for photos. Shooting from a low angle or from across the street helps avoid crowds. ❻ Bund Snowman Pier Walk along the park from the Music Corridor to reach it. There are benches outside the park where you can take photos with the snowmen⛄️ ❼ Ice and Snow World As a southerner seeing so many ice sculptures for the first time, it’s truly breathtaking🧊 There are many fun activities here—definitely a must-do! ❽ Hengdaohezi This place looks just like a fairy tale town, with thick white snow on rooftops and roads. I took the high-speed train there around 7 AM and returned around 4 PM. ❾ Harbin Pharmaceutical Sixth Factory The building itself is very European-style, and casual photos look like they were taken abroad. · ✈️ Flight: Taiping International Airport 🚄 High-speed train: Harbin Station / Harbin West Station 🏨 Accommodation: You can choose to stay near Museum Station on Line 2, which is convenient for transportation and has plenty of dining options. 🍲 Must-try foods: Guo Bao Rou (sweet and sour pork), iron pot stew, spicy hot pot, and the standout Northeast barbecue

Depart from Harbin, take the high-speed train 🚄 for 1.5 hours to reach this winter fairy tale town!! Snow cabins, hillside swings, railway tracks, Russian-style town… From halfway up the hill, you can overlook the entire town. It looks exactly like something out of an anime, so healing. Every photo you take looks amazing~ If you travel to Harbin, be sure to save a day for this place!!! · 🚶Travel route: High-speed train 🚄 to Hengdaohezi East Taxi 🚗 from the railway entrance—Beishan Street—Hengdao Coffee—Hengdaohezi Old Station—Chinese Eastern Railway Locomotive Depot—Russian Style Street—Hillside Swing (30 RMB/person fee)—Chinese Eastern Railway Museum—Northeast Tiger Forest Park—Hengdaohezi East back to Harbin · Because it gets dark early in the Northeast, it’s recommended to take the morning high-speed train. Only have 2 days for the weekend? Can't travel far but don't want to just lie around at home? I've picked 8 places where you can start exploring as soon as you land or get off the high-speed train. No need to take time off work or plan complex itineraries. I'll give you the honest truth about each place—the good and the bad. 01 Yinchuan | Ningxia First time in Yinchuan, I suggest putting Mingcui Lake on your first morning. The lake is wide, the reeds are dense, and the light is softest from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM—no editing needed for your photos. Admission isn't expensive, but the sightseeing car costs extra; if you're good on your feet, just walk the boardwalk—it takes about 2 hours for a loop. Afternoon: Helan Mountain Rock Art. The petroglyphs are most concentrated on the cliff face at the gully entrance. Don't expect anything too mind-blowing; you need some imagination to appreciate them, but the mountain breeze is very pleasant. ⚠️ The scenic area stops entry at 5:00 PM, so don't cut it too close. Day 2: Save for Shuidonggou and the Western Xia Tombs. The hidden soldier caves at Shuidonggou are fun to crawl through, but the steps are steep—take it slow if you're with seniors. For the Western Xia Tombs, I recommend taking the sightseeing bus; the tombs are spread out, and walking will wear you out. 🍜 Back in the city, have a bowl of lamb sauce noodles with extra chili—it's delicious. Best for: People who want to take photos with a wild vibe or have an interest in history. Not for: Those who just want to lie in a hotel and eat buffet. 02 Huizhou | Guangdong Compared to Suzhou or Hangzhou, Huizhou West Lake is less famous, but it's quieter. ⏰ Go after 6:00 PM. There are more locals taking walks and fewer tourists. The moment the Sizhou Pagoda lights up is worth the wait. No need to buy a boat ticket; walking a loop along the Su Causeway takes 40 minutes and is free. I advise setting aside a full day for Luofu Mountain. You still have to walk a bit after taking the cable car up, and the trees around Chongxu Ancient Temple are impressively old. ⚠️ There are few supply points on the mountain, so bring enough water. The stone steps are slippery when it rains, so don't wear sneakers. Xunliao Bay is good for the second afternoon. The water is average, but the beach is flat, making it safe for kids to dig in the sand. 🍜 At nearby food stalls, ask for the price of salt and pepper mantis shrimp before ordering—that's the rule. 🚄 It takes about 30 minutes by taxi from Huizhou South Station to West Lake. Best for: Families, those who want to avoid crowded bays. Avoid: Traffic jams at Xunliao Bay during holidays can make you question your life choices. 03 Huangnan | Qinghai Kanbula is the most weather-dependent spot on this list. It's a completely different place on sunny versus cloudy days. ⏰ Enter the scenic area before 10:00 AM. The mist hasn't cleared yet, and the Danxia landforms against the Yellow River water offer the best color layering. 📍 The hiking trail at Nanzonggou leads to nunneries and meditation caves—it's so quiet you can only hear the wind. The altitude is high, so walk slowly and don't push yourself. ⚠️ There's almost no food inside the scenic area, so bring your own. Driving is most convenient—about 2 hours from Xining. If you're not driving, carpool or join a 1-day tour. 🚄 There's no high-speed rail, so don't plan on a round trip in 1 day; you need to stay overnight to avoid rushing. Best for: People who love unique landscapes and quiet. Not for: Those with obvious altitude sickness who try to push through it. 04 Nujiang | Yunnan Bingzhongluo is the kind of place where you want to stay an extra day as soon as you arrive. ⏰ In the early morning, mist rises from the Nujiang River. The view from the Gongdang Sacred Mountain observation deck is the most reliable for a panoramic shot. Don't stand too close to the edge at the Nujiang First Bend—it's windy. Nanji Luo is for hiking enthusiasts. The altitude is high and the roads are rough; regular cars can't get in, so you'll need a local off-road vehicle. ⚠️ Landslides are common during the rainy season, so check road conditions before you leave. If you can't walk any further, turn back—no one will laugh at you. 🍜 Try the lacquer oil chicken in Bingzhongluo town; it has a unique flavor that might take some getting used to the first time. For accommodation, choose a guesthouse with a river view—it's quiet at night. Best for: Hikers, experienced photographers. Not for: People with rigid itineraries or those who can't handle bumpy roads. 05 Manzhouli | Inner Mongolia I'll be honest, the ticket for the Manzhouli Matryoshka Scenic Area isn't cheap. But if you're bringing kids, it's worth it. ⏰ Go in after 4:00 PM and stay until night to see the lights—the Matryoshka buildings look 10 times better at night than during the day. 📍 The inside of the big Matryoshka in the scenic area is a mall and restaurant; don't expect anything too fancy. ⚠️ Lines are long during peak season, so buy tickets online in advance to save time. You can stop by the National Gate Scenic Area nearby, but don't buy a combo ticket—choose what you need. 🍜 Try Russian-style Western food in the city—the borscht and rye bread are worth a taste. 🚄 Manzhouli Station is close to the city center; it's just a base fare taxi ride away. Best for: Families, those who want to take exotic-looking photos. Avoid: Don't buy Matryoshka souvenirs inside the scenic area; they're half the price in the city. 06 Handan | Hebei Guangfu Ancient City was an unexpected surprise. ⏰ Go at 7:00 AM. The locals are all out doing morning exercises at the foot of the city wall, and the mist over the moat hasn't cleared yet—it looks much better than in the afternoon. 📍 Climb the city wall at the South Gate. A full loop takes over an hour; renting a bike is less tiring. Wahuang Palace is in She County; the mountain isn't high, but the steps are dense. ⚠️ It's packed around the first day of the third lunar month, so avoid that time if you want peace and quiet. The hanging temple-style architecture is built against the cliff face; you have to look up to see the details. 🍜 In Handan city, try the "oil-in-a-basket" dumplings—thin skin and lots of filling. 🚄 It takes about 40 minutes by taxi from Handan East Station to Guangfu Ancient City. Best for: People who love ancient cities and architecture. Avoid: Haggle the price of local specialties in Guangfu Ancient City by half before you start negotiating. 07 Jining | Shandong Qufu Ming Ancient City—the "Three Confucius Sites" are the core. ⏰ Get there right when it opens at 8:00 AM; there are fewer people and the light is good. 📍 Don't just breeze through the Apricot Altar and the Thirteen Stele Pavilions in the Confucius Temple. Tag along with a guide, otherwise, you're just looking at buildings. ⚠️ The combo ticket for the Three Confucius Sites isn't cheap, so make sure you're going to visit all of them before buying. Weishan Lake is for another day. It's only worth visiting in summer when the lotus flowers are in bloom; the scenery is average in other seasons. 🍜 Try the crayfish and lotus leaf rice made by the fishermen on the lake for a fresh taste. Remember to haggle when taking a boat tour—don't agree to the first price. 🚄 Qufu East Station is the high-speed rail station; it's a bit of a distance from the Three Confucius Sites, about 20 minutes by taxi. Best for: Traveling with elders, those interested in humanities. 08 Heihe | Heilongjiang Wudalianchi, a volcanic landscape, has a completely different vibe from the previous ones. ⏰ July and August are the most comfortable; it's cold in other months. 📍 Climb Laohei Mountain to see the crater; the steps are well-built, so even those with average fitness can make it up. The water at the North Drinking Spring is carbonated and tastes like rust—just take a sip to experience it. ⚠️ The scenic spots are far apart and it's troublesome without a car, so I recommend chartering a car or driving yourself. Soaking in the cold mineral springs is a specialty, but don't soak for too long. 🍜 Try the local mineral water fish—it's fresh when stewed. 🚄 There's no high-speed rail to Heihe; you have to fly or take a train from Harbin, so leave enough time. Best for: Escaping the heat, those who want to see volcanic landscapes. Not for: People who just want to eat and shop. Of these 8 places, the ones I most want to visit a second time are Bingzhongluo and Kanbula. One is wild, the other is quiet. If you only have 2 days, pick the one closest to you and go—don't overthink it. Let me know if it was worth it after you've been.

Some cities are naturally popular, while others, despite their rich history, are often just places to pass through. These 8 places are definitely worth considering. 1️⃣ Nanyang | Henan The Funiu Mountains reserve their most scenic section for Xixia. In summer, you'll need a light jacket at Laojieling; the wind is strong at the summit, and the clouds seem to fly by. The Dinosaur Relics Park is more suitable for families with children; real dinosaur egg fossils are right in front of you, more effective than picture books. ⏰ It's recommended to go to Laojieling in the morning and the Relics Park in the afternoon to avoid the midday sun. 🚄 It's about a two-hour drive from Nanyang East Station; driving is easier. The mountain roads are winding, so those prone to motion sickness should bring medication. ⚠️ The Laojieling cable car generally stops operating after 4 PM, so don't go up at that time. 🍜 In Xixia County, stir-fried noodles and mutton soup are the local breakfast staples. A bowl after a hike will completely rejuvenate you. For a more comfortable stay, there are several guesthouses outside the Lao Jie Ling mountain gate, offering views of the mountain ridge from their windows. Book a week in advance during peak season. 👨‍👩‍👧 This route is especially suitable for families with school-aged children. A morning hike strengthens their legs, while an afternoon spent learning about fossils leaves keeps the kids awake all day. In autumn, from mid to late October, the forest is ablaze with vibrant red leaves, adding another layer of color compared to summer. 2️⃣ Yichun|Heilongjiang Tangwanghe Forest and Strange Rocks—the name sounds like a tourist attraction advertisement, but once you step inside, you'll find it's a real forest. The rocks seem to grow out of the forest, like blocks scattered haphazardly. ⏰ Visit in mid to late September, when the birch trees turn yellow before the pine needles turn green, creating the most distinct color layering. 📍 The "One Line Sky" section in the scenic area is narrow; backpackers have to squeeze through sideways, and larger individuals will need to take a deep breath. 🍜 The chicken stew with mushrooms in the town at the foot of the mountain uses hazel mushrooms, and the soup is so thick it clings to a spoon. Choose accommodation in Tangwanghe District so you don't have to rush to enter the valley in the morning. ⚠️ The temperature difference between day and night in the forest area can be as high as 15 degrees Celsius; even in summer, bring a fleece. 🚗 It takes about two hours to get from Yichun city to Tangwanghe. Buses only run a few times a day, so driving or carpooling is recommended. The red pine primeval forest in Wuying National Forest Park is also worth a stop along the way; the trees are four or five hundred years old, and standing beneath them will suddenly quiet you down. 🦟 In July and August, mosquitoes are rampant in the forest, so don't skimp on mosquito repellent and long sleeves and pants. Winter offers a completely different experience; snow-covered branches are laden with snow, but temperatures can drop to -20 or -30 degrees Celsius, so prepare winter gear according to Northeast China's winter standards. 3️⃣ Yinchuan|Ningxia Yinchuan's charm is understated. The reeds at Mingcui Lake are taller than a person; rowing in is like navigating a maze. The Helan Mountain rock paintings require explanations, otherwise you'll just be looking at rocks. The painting of the Sun God is at the entrance of the valley; don't go the wrong way. ⏰ In Shuidonggou, the light is oblique after 3 PM, revealing the layers of the earthen walls of the hidden soldier caves. For the Western Xia Mausoleums, it's recommended to take the shuttle bus; the mausoleum area is too large, and walking will be exhausting. 📍 Huaiyuan Night Market opens at 6 PM; get in line for spicy stew and roasted lamb trotters first. ⚠️ The Western Xia Mausoleum Museum is closed on Mondays; don't schedule it on your itinerary that day. 🍜 Besides the night market, Lao Mao's hand-pulled lamb and Yingbinlou's hot pot lamb are local favorites; the hand-pulled lamb dipped in vinegar and garlic is not gamey at all. Staying in the old town of Xingqing District is centrally located for visiting various attractions. 🎫 It's recommended to book in advance through their official WeChat accounts for both the Western Xia Imperial Tombs and the Helan Mountain Rock Paintings, as queues can be long during peak season. Zhenbeibao Western Film City is worth a quick visit, but don't have high expectations; two hours is sufficient. The overall pace is best enjoyed at a leisurely three-day pace, not rushing around. 4️⃣ Huangnan|Qinghai Kanbula is the kind of place where "a photo can't capture even a tenth of its beauty." The Danxia landforms are a deep, dark red, while the Yellow River is a vibrant, bright green—a striking contrast. ⏰ From late July to August, the rapeseed flowers are still in bloom, creating patches of yellow and red on the hillsides. 🚗 It's about a two-hour drive from Xining; hiring a car is recommended as buses are infrequent. There are many viewpoints along the road near Lijiaxia Reservoir, with stops available frequently. 📍 You can see nunneries in Nanzonggou; please be quiet and avoid loud noises. ⚠️ The altitude is above 2500 meters; avoid showering and running on the first day. Stay in Jianzha County; the accommodations are better than in the scenic area. 🍜 In Tongren, try the Tibetan food, including tsampa and butter tea. The flavors are quite strong, so start with small sips to get used to it. The old streets around Longwu Monastery are worth exploring at a leisurely pace; you can watch artists create Thangka paintings on-site at the workshops. 🧥 The weather in the highlands is like four seasons in a day. A windproof jacket and sun hat are essential, and don't forget sunglasses. This route is better suited for self-driving or hiring a car, as public transportation connections are weak. If traveling alone, find a travel companion in advance. 5️⃣ Yantai|Shandong The ethereal beauty of Penglai Pavilion comes partly from the sea fog. ⏰ Go up to the pavilion before 7 am, before the tour groups arrive, and you can hear the waves crashing against the walls. Changdao Island requires a boat trip; those prone to seasickness should choose a larger boat. The pebbles in Crescent Bay cannot be taken away, so just look at them. 🍜 Try Penglai noodles for breakfast; a bowl costs three yuan and includes a braised egg. Longkou Nanshan is suitable for elderly people; the steps are gentle, and it's cool at the foot of the Buddha statue. 🚄 It takes about an hour to get from Yantai Station to Penglai, but Penglai City High-Speed Railway Station is closer. ⚠️ Book your Changdao ferry tickets in advance during peak season, as ferries may be suspended on windy days. Allow for flexibility. 🏖️ The Yangma Island Ring Road is great for renting an electric scooter for a ride. The seawater is so clear you can see the bottom, and there are many people going beachcombing at low tide in the evening. Staying near Penglai Pavilion allows you to walk up to the pavilion in the morning without having to fight for parking. 🦐 Seafood is at its fattest after the fishing season opens in September and October. Mackerel dumplings and sea cucumber rice are local specialties; buying from the market and having them cooked is more cost-effective. If you're traveling with elderly people, don't pack too much of your itinerary. Two days for Penglai Pavilion and Nanshan is just right. 6️⃣ Hezhou|Guangxi The waterfall at Gupo Mountain isn't just for looking at, it's for listening. Before you even see the water, the sound fills your ears. You should stay overnight in Huangyao Ancient Town, waiting for the tourists to leave so the stone-paved streets are yours to explore. ⏰ At 6 AM, someone was washing vegetables under the Dailong Bridge; the fog hadn't lifted yet. 🍜 I've had fermented black bean powder and stuffed tofu at the "Gu Family" shop in the ancient town before; it was alright. To watch the sunrise at Dongtanling, you need to get up at 4:30 AM. The mountain roads are unlit, so bring a flashlight. ⚠️ Most shops in the ancient town close after 9 PM; bring your own if you want late-night snacks. 🚄 It takes about an hour from Hezhou Station to Huangyao; sharing a ride is cheaper than taking a taxi. 🏡 The old-style guesthouses in the ancient town are worth staying in. The wooden houses don't have great soundproofing, but you can see blue bricks and gray tiles through the windows. The entrance fee to Gupo Mountain includes a sightseeing bus; the mountain road is long, so don't try to walk it. 🌧️ There's a lot of rain in spring and summer, making the stone paths slippery; wear non-slip shoes. This route is suitable for a slow two or three-day trip. People who prefer a fast pace might find it "unremarkable," but you'll appreciate the experience by slowing down. 7️⃣ Qianxinan | Guizhou The Malinghe Canyon is a scar on the earth. The boardwalk hugs the cliff face, waterfalls cascade overhead, and raincoats are more effective than umbrellas. ⏰ The rainy season, from June to August, has the highest water volume, but the paths are slippery, so wear non-slip shoes. Wanfenglin is best visited in the afternoon; rent an electric scooter. The Bagua Field is most photogenic at sunset. 📍 There's a fried rice stall in Nahui Village with houttuynia cordata (a type of herb); those who don't like it should be cautious. ⚠️ Cell phone signal is intermittent in the canyon; don't get separated from your travel companions. Staying in Xingyi city is convenient for eating and lodging. 🍜 Xingyi's mutton rice noodles and "Shuabatou" (a type of herbal soup) are local specialties. A bowl of mutton rice noodles for breakfast will give you energy for the whole day. You can stay overnight in a Buyi village in Wanfenglin; in the morning, you can see the peaks and mist from your window. 🎫 It's recommended to buy tickets online in advance for Malinghe Canyon and Wanfenglin, as there are long queues at the entrance during peak season. This route is suitable for those who enjoy natural scenery and hiking; those just wanting to check off landmarks might find it tiring. 8️⃣ Dongguan|Guangdong Humen Bridge: Many people only see it when there's traffic. ⏰ Go to Weiyuan Fort in the evening; the bridge lights up, and the river surface is warm. 📍 The Naval Battle Museum is free, but reservations are required in advance; it's closed on Mondays. ⚠️ No parking or taking photos on the bridge; don't risk it. 🍜 Humen Village's roast goose rice noodles are fragrant with goose oil and have smooth noodles. Perfect for a short weekend trip, a half-day round trip. 🚗 The best way to get there by car is via the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Riverside Expressway. From the high-speed rail station at Humen, it's a 20-minute taxi ride. Keyuan Garden and Nanshe Ancient Village are also worth visiting along the way; they are Lingnan gardens and Ming and Qing dynasty villages, quiet and less crowded. 👨‍👩‍👧 For families with kids, a half-day trip to the naval museum and fortifications is just right—a live history lesson. This itinerary is perfect for a weekend half-day trip in the Pearl River Delta; no need to take time off work, just pack up and go. None of these eight places are "you'll regret it if you don't go," but once you do, you'll remember them for a long time. Just pick a weekend and go!

Skip the long-distance travel. You can reach these 4 hidden gem cities in about 1 hour by high-speed rail. Avoid the crowds, enjoy an easy weekend getaway, and relax with a laid-back pace, fewer tourists, and a great experience. 🚞 Shangzhi | A forest city with revolutionary history and mountain scenery High-speed rail duration: About 17–25 minutes. Second-class tickets are just over 20 yuan, making short trips super convenient. Why visit: Most tourists only know Yabuli and overlook the small city of Shangzhi. It is not overly commercialized and is surrounded by forests. With a mix of historical culture and natural mountain scenery, it is perfect for a leisurely stroll. ✅ Must-visit · Shangzhi Stele Forest: A forest of stone calligraphy steles with a quiet, peaceful environment and few crowds. · Mao'er Mountain Scenic Area: Go hiking, enjoy the forest scenery, and see the mountains covered in autumn colors. · Zhao Yiman Memorial Park: A spot for revolutionary history and learning about modern Northeast history. 🥘 Local food: Shangzhi guobaorou (sweet and sour pork), braised pork bones, and wild mountain vegetables—authentic Northeast home-style dishes. 💡 Tips: Wear non-slip shoes for autumn hiking. Autumn road trip. Leave Mudanjiang early for a journey of lakes and mountains and two different charms. In the morning, head to Jingpo Lake to enjoy the northern lake scenery: blue water embraced by mountains and rushing waterfalls. See the vast volcanic barrier lake and the thundering Diaoshuilou Waterfall. In the afternoon, drive on toward Hengdaohezi tucked among the mountains. Hidden in the forested mountains, Hengdaohezi is a century-old Russian-style town born from the Chinese Eastern Railway. Unlike noisy popular attractions, it is quiet and gentle, with a vintage atmosphere that feels like stepping through time. The town is still slowly being developed and is currently popular for travel photography. The recent cultural tourism interest has breathed new life into century-old buildings without overcommercializing them, preserving their authentic aged character. Stroll the town's streets and alleys, where Russian-style wooden houses are built along the hills in a picturesque arrangement. Colorful facades and vintage pointed roofs, flowers crowding the old houses—every scene is soothing and restorative. Every brick and tile hides a century of weathering. The mottled walls and vintage window frames quietly tell the former prosperity and stories of the Chinese Eastern Railway. The town's soul is hidden in the Chinese Eastern Railway Museum's roundhouse. The grand, distinctive curved building is a century-old railway imprint that remains. Standing here, you can almost hear the ancient whistle echoing across mountains and rivers through a hundred years, immersing you in the railway dramas and historical layers of modern Northeast China. St. Mary's Church and the century-old street dot the area, and every step reveals a charming scene. At sunset the evening breeze turns cool. No need to rush on—I chose to stay at a characterful mountainside guesthouse called the old courtyard. At dusk, Hengdaohezi is especially quiet, embraced by forest with curling cooking smoke; the daytime bustle fades, leaving only gentle domestic life and the calm of ancient mountains and rivers. This day's road trip from Mudanjiang began with the grandeur of lakes and mountains and ended with the town's gentle charm. In Hengdaohezi, I had the delightful surprise of unboxing a blind box. Meeting a century-old railway dream in slow time, I came to understand the softness and weight of the years held by the mountains and rivers. Travel tips 1. Pace: lightly explore Jingpo Lake in the morning, then drive to Hengdaohezi in the afternoon, a drive of about 1.5–2 hours. For the best experience, explore the ancient town in depth and stay overnight in a town guesthouse. 2. Must-see: the Chinese Eastern Railway roundhouse museum, the Church of the Assumption, and the Russian-style century-old street, all highly photogenic. 3. Photo tips: do not disturb residents' private homes, and be respectful when taking photos. 4. The town is under development with moderate facilities; dining options are limited, and there are many guesthouses but book ahead in peak season. Day‑night temperature differences are large here, so bring a light jacket for autumn travel.

🏰 Trip Highlights: A journey through time in the north Four distinct hidden gems in Heilongjiang: the picturesque, oil-painting-like Hengdaohezi; the historically significant Aihui Ancient City; Acheng, the birthplace of Jin culture; and Taipinggou Gold Town, brimming with frontier spirit. Avoid the crowds and capture cinematic shots with every click! 🎬✨ 🚗 Accommodation & Transport: Convenient and hassle-free · Hengdaohezi: We recommend staying at a homestay near the Russian Old Street, where opening your window reveals a fairy-tale world 🏠. It is accessible by direct train, and the scenery begins the moment you step out of the station. · Acheng: Experience a century-old Manchu house with a traditional heated brick bed (kang) for an authentic Northeast vibe 🔥. It is super convenient, just a 30-minute high-speed train ride from Harbin. · Aihui Ancient City: Located 100 meters southeast of the intersection of Tianshi Road and Gongchen Street in Aihui Town, Heihe City. We recommend staying in downtown Heihe for more options and better value, then chartering a car (approx. CNY 80/day) to travel to and from the ancient city. · Overall transport: A road trip is the best way to explore, allowing you to drive through forests and snowfields and stop whenever you like to capture the scenery 🛣️. Alternatively, you can combine high-speed rail with local buses. 🗺️ Itinerary: A four-day, four-city slow travel guide · Day 1: Hengdaohezi 🚂. When light and shadow filter through the fan-shaped tracks of the locomotive depot, it feels like a romantic sigh from the industrial age 💡. · Acheng: Pause before the Yagou cliff carvings to admire the statues left by Jin Dynasty craftsmen, whose features have remained unweathered by a thousand years of wind and snow 🗿. · Aihui: Be sure to take a walk along the riverside trail, where you can truly feel the lingering warmth of history and the tranquility of the border 🌅. 🥢 Food Recommendations: Authentic Northeast flavors · Hengdaohezi Jinbing (thin pancakes): These are so thin they're translucent. Rolled with shredded potatoes, they are incredibly delicious and a staple of the local breakfast! 🌯 · Acheng Shazhucai (pork stew): With tender blood sausage and flavorful sauerkraut, this dish is the soul of the old town 🍲. · Border river fish: In Aihui or Taipinggou, the local "Sanhua Wuluo" fish are incredibly fresh and delicious, especially when slow-cooked in an iron pot 🐟. 💡 Practical Tips · Best season: Visit in winter! The combination of white snow, Russian architecture, and red brick walls is stunning. Autumn (September–October) is also top-tier for photography, with the mountains painted in vibrant colors 🍂❄️. · Clothing guide: Winters in the Northeast are seriously cold. A thick down jacket and snow boots are essential, and don't forget a hat, scarf, and gloves 🧤.

North of the "Five Nations Head City" scenic area, right next to Pomegranate Park, and just across the park is another must-visit spot on this Yilan trip, about 300 meters in a straight line from Yilan County Museum. The name Yilan comes from the Manchu word "Yilan Hala," which means "three surnames" in Chinese. At the end of the Ming and the beginning of the Qing dynasty, three major Hezhe clans—Geyikele, Nuyiele, and Hushihali—lived here. During the Qing dynasty, the official name of this place was "Three Surnames," making it a famous frontier town in Northeast China. In 1905 (the 31st year of the Guangxu reign), Yilan Prefecture was established, adopting the abbreviated Manchu name as the official place name. After the founding of the People’s Republic, it was named Yilan County. Yilan is the "origin of the Jurchen people and the ancestral home of the Qing royal family," which enriched my knowledge and was another major gain from this trip. The Jianzhou Jurchens were the core tribe of the later Manchu people, and their earliest origin was in this area. Nurhaci’s sixth-generation ancestor, Menggetiemuer, known as the Qing dynasty’s founding ancestor, was born near the ancient Woduoli city in Madatun, Yilan. Later, the Woduoli tribe was forced to migrate southward over a long distance, gradually moving to eastern Liaoning. In 1583, Nurhaci raised an army with thirteen sets of armor to unify the Jurchens. In 1616, he established the Later Jin dynasty in Xinbin, Liaoning, laying the foundation for the Qing dynasty. Yilan County Museum also refers to Yilan as the land of dragon rise.

Because I wanted to explore the history of "looking at the sky from the bottom of a well," I learned about the "five tribal capitals" and also about the Jin dynasty’s Huli gailu. Seeing the five large characters "five tribal capitals" on the gate naturally made me want to understand the origin of the name. During the Liao dynasty, along the lower Songhua River (from Yilan eastward to the Heilongjiang river mouth), five Jurchen tribal alliances (collectively called the five tribes) were lined up along the river. At that time, present-day Yilan was called Yueliji city, located at the first stop of the five tribes and served as the administrative headquarters of the five-tribe alliance, hence the name tribal capital. The Jin dynasty also continued to use this name. The current five tribal capitals is a newly built ancient-style scenic area on the original site. Construction officially started in July 2003, and it opened on June 27, 2004. It is said that the only real relic is a small section of rammed earth wall in the woods outside the scenic area’s wall. The Jin dynasty’s "Huli gailu," equivalent to today’s prefecture-level area, was located within the five tribal capitals. Through the Huli gailu Wanhu mansion, visitors can also learn about the administrative, judicial, tax, and military affairs of that time. The two emperors Hui and Qin were exiled to the harsh land of Huli gailu. The "looking at the sky from the bottom of a well" garden is also the main feature of this ancient-style scenic area. There are not many visitors to the scenic area. The full ticket price is 50 yuan, which seems a bit high. A price of 20–30 yuan would be more reasonable.

The “Jingkang humiliation” is a historical memory for everyone. It used to be known only from history textbooks, but when in Harbin, there was a strong desire to visit Wuguotoucheng in Yilan County to see the actual prison site where Emperors Huizong and Qinzong were held “sitting in a well to view the sky.” At the end of the Northern Song dynasty, the Jin army advanced south and captured Kaifeng (Bianjing), taking Emperor Huizong Zhao Ji and Emperor Qinzong Zhao Huan prisoner. This event is known as the Jingkang incident, marking the fall of the Northern Song. The father and son were stripped of their royal robes and took nearly two years to reach the Jin territory. Huizong was titled Duke of Hundegong, and Qinzong was titled Marquis of Zhonghun, enduring extreme humiliation. In 1130, the Jin sent the two emperors into house arrest at the remote Wuguotoucheng (now Yilan, Heilongjiang). Their daily conditions were harsh, living in dilapidated earthen houses with little clothing or food, accompanied only by a few former officials and palace maids. Later, to improve relations with the Southern Song, they were posthumously honored as Prince of Tianshui and Duke of Tianshui. The term “sitting in a well to view the sky” refers to being confined within high walls and a small courtyard, living in a semi-underground cellar in the northeast with very limited space. The courtyard walls were so tall that looking up revealed only a small patch of sky. Later generations vividly described this as “sitting in a well to view the sky.” Emperor Huizong Zhao Ji was skilled in the slender gold script calligraphy and painting. After the fall of the country, he wrote many sorrowful poems about homesickness during his captivity. His representative work “Inscription on the northern wall” reads: “All night the west wind shakes the broken door, a dim light in the lonely inn; looking back toward my homeland three thousand miles away, no swallows fly in the southern sky.” He died in Wuguotoucheng in 1135 at the age of 54. Emperor Qinzong Zhao Huan, the last emperor of the Northern Song, endured many years in Yilan. Later, the Jin moved him to Yanjing for continued house arrest. In 1156, he died after being trampled during a polo match in Jin territory, never returning south. Wuguotoucheng marks the end of the Northern Song dynasty. The prosperous Bianjing faded, and two emperors were imprisoned in a small northeastern town. This site is not only a historical landmark of the Jingkang humiliation but also one of the most solemn historical relics where the Jurchen civilization of the northeast and the Central Plains Song dynasty history intersect.

Hengdaohezi Town, known as the Garden Town, is laid out around a central garden. Surrounded by mountains and water, with lush greenery, 256 Russian-style old buildings are scattered around the garden. Yellow walls, red roofs, carved wooden windows, and vibrant greenery and flowers create picturesque scenes at every step, like an oil painting. It is the most well-preserved and purest century-old town along the Chinese Eastern Railway. The historical significance here is irreplaceable: born from the construction of the Chinese Eastern Railway in 1897, it was once a railway hub and a key military and political site, known as "Uchash" (the big agency), a crucial node between Harbin and Suifenhe. The town preserves 5 nationally protected cultural heritage buildings and 104 city-level ones. Remnants such as the fan-shaped locomotive depot, wooden Church of the Nativity, and the large white railway building fully record the modern history of Northeast China's transportation, immigrant history, and industrial civilization. It is not only a "living fossil" of the Chinese Eastern Railway but also a famous historical and cultural town in China, honored by UNESCO for cultural heritage protection. Its historical value is self-evident. The cultural atmosphere is hidden in every detail of the garden and streets. Russian wooden log houses, the brushstrokes of the oil painting village, the aroma of rye bread on the old street, the blend of iron art and folk customs—Chinese and Russian cultures coexist here. Without the noise of over-commercialization, there are only potted flowers on residents' windowsills, the old post office on the corner, and quiet museums. Time flows slowly here, where everyday life and artistic charm gently embrace each other. Strolling with the garden as the center, spring buds adorn the branches, with lingering snow contrasting the fresh green. The breeze carries the warm scent of plants and old buildings. Living here means no need to rush your itinerary; quietly enjoy the shifting light and shadow on the garden bench, touch the texture of history in century-old buildings, and feel the simple everyday life on the old street. This is the true essence of the town. Hengdaohezi’s slow life is a dialogue with a century-old cultural context, a place to rest body and mind in the embrace of the garden, allowing every visitor to understand: this garden town offers not only exotic charm but also the weight of a century of history and the poetic healing of life.

The gray brick buildings still bear signs of “So-and-so Trading Company,” and the brass doorplates are polished shiny from touch. Sunlight filters through the plane tree leaves, casting dappled light that sways with your footsteps. The green-painted wooden door of the Qing Dynasty Post Office is ajar; when pushed open with a creak, you can almost hear the postman’s brass bell ringing at the alley’s end. The old-fashioned telephone on the counter is covered with a thin layer of dust, and for a moment, you can imagine a lady in a qipao tiptoeing to make a call📸 The best part is the “scenery at every step” surprise! The carved window lattices of the former Red Swastika Society building are covered with ivy, and bullet holes on the brick walls hide stories of the past. Around the corner, a café uses Republican Era newspapers to wallpaper its walls. The menu’s “Old Shanghai Iced Coffee” paired with a vintage desk lamp—one sip, and the bitter aroma blends with the flavor of time. An elderly gentleman in a Zhongshan suit sits on a rattan chair reading the newspaper; the rustling paper mixes with the distant tram bell. Suddenly, you understand the charm of the old street: it’s the healing power of the Republican Era style, the gentle sediment of time, the relaxation of not rushing, and the thoughtful care of the hotel that lets you firmly grasp this beautiful “slow down” moment~ Next time, I’ll come again, stepping on the bluestone from dawn to dusk, making up for the old buildings I didn’t photograph enough and the vintage shops I didn’t explore enough~
