Shamian is located in the southwest of Guangzhou, south of the Pearl River Baietan, north of Shaji Yong, and a small island facing Liu'er 3rd Road. Shamian was a place for business and tourism in China and abroad during the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing periods. After the Opium War, it became a British and French concession after the eleventh year of Qing Xianfeng (1861). Shamian is an important business district in Guangzhou. After a hundred years, more than ten countries have established consulates in Shamian, nine foreign banks, more than 40 foreign banks operate in Shamian, and Guangdong Customs Club, Guangzhou Club, etc. have been established in Shamian. Shamian witnessed the changes in modern history of Guangzhou, leaving behind the footprints of great people such as Mr. Sun Yat-sen and Premier Zhou Enlai. Shamian has become the epitome of modern history and concession history in China. The European style building on Shamian Island has formed a unique open-air building "museum".
