Rheinuferpromenade
No. 6 of Best Things to Do in Rhine-Ruhr

Rheinuferpromenade

5.9
4.6/5
65 reviews
Rheinuferpromenade is a waterfront promenade with a total length of approx. 1.5 km. In the 1990s, the road along this shoreline was moved into an underground tunnel, and the embankment was redesigned as a pedestrian space, becoming a waterfront destination shared by locals and visitors alike. The promenade is divided into two levels: the upper level is a tree-lined path flanked by rows of plane trees, with benches along the way. From the grand steps at Burgplatz or beside the old Rhine water gauge, you can descend to the lower embankment at water level, where the boat docks are located. On a clear day, sitting by the railing and looking out, you can enjoy views of the opposite bank, the iron bridge across the river, and passing boats. Watching the sunset while feeling the river breeze in the evening is a signature experience. Extending along the river, it passes by the City Hall and ends at the State Parliament building, the Rhine Tower, and the Media Harbour, connecting a beautiful waterfront panorama from the historic district to the modern harbor area.Dusseldorf · 305m from downtown

Konigsallee

Konigsallee is a tree-lined shopping boulevard with a total length of approx. 1 km. A canal fed by the Düssel River runs through the center, where chestnut trees line the banks, swans and wild ducks often swim, and small bridges with wrought-iron railings span the water, connecting the walkways on both sides. The two sides have distinct roles: the east side is home to numerous brand flagship stores and exquisite window displays, while the west side is dominated by office buildings, banks, and historic hotels. Standing on the west side to admire the tree-lined waterfront view on the opposite bank is very photogenic. The history of this boulevard is also quite colorful: it was originally named Chestnut Avenue. In 1848, when the Prussian King Frederick William IV passed by in a carriage, protesting citizens threw objects at him. To make amends with the King, the street was officially renamed Konigsallee in 1851, and this historical anecdote remains a popular cultural background story to this day.Dusseldorf · 767m from downtown

The market square is located in the center of the old town, next to the Heine House and the King's Road. The square is very small, and the old building next to it is the City Hall of Dusseldorf, which is much smaller than the city halls of other cities in Germany. In the center of the square stands the bronze equestrian statue of Grand Duke John William carved in 1711, who made Düsseldorf a famous cultural city.Dusseldorf · 229m from downtown

Rheinauhafen District

4.5/5
45 reviews
Rheinauhafen District is a waterfront neighborhood transformed from an old freight port. The riverside promenade is lined with modern buildings, interspersed with cafes, galleries, and art spaces. The remnants of the port era and the newly built glass facades complement each other, showcasing a modern urban style. The district's core landmark consists of three high-rise buildings known as the "Crane Houses," standing approx. 60m tall, with an inverted L-shape that echoes the area's history as a freight terminal. Historical remnants, such as the Bayenturm tower dating back to the Middle Ages, are also preserved along the route. Looking north along the river, the silhouettes of the cathedral and the iron bridge are clearly visible, with classical spires and modern architecture framed together. At dusk, the sunset reflects on the river surface, and strolling along the path offers a panoramic view of the city on both banks, forming a waterfront view that blends industrial memories with a stylish atmosphere.Cologne · 35.8km from Dusseldorf

The former residence of the poet Heine, located at No. 53 Bork Street in the old town of Düsseldorf, Germany, is the birthplace of Heinrich Heine, a famous German poet, writer and journalist. Heine was born in the backyard of the building on December 13, 1797. Although the original building no longer exists, some historical bricks have been preserved and used to commemorate this literary giant. The former residence building itself is a three-story traditional German house with a bronze relief statue of Heine inlaid above the main entrance. Today, the first floor of the former residence is a literary bookstore and cafe, displaying Heine's works and related research books, making it a must-visit place for literary lovers. The nearby Heine Avenue is one of the bustling streets in Düsseldorf. It is named after the poet, highlighting the city's commemoration of Heine. The Heine House is not only a gathering place for literary lovers, but also a cultural space that combines history and modernity. Its unique architectural style and rich activities make it an ideal place for tourists to understand Heine's life and works and experience the literary atmosphere of Düsseldorf.Dusseldorf · 208m from downtown

Our home is right on the banks of the Rhine in Düsseldorf, so we come to this park and walk along the river every day. The banks of the Rhine are both beautiful and useful. There are various activities here every Sunday, sometimes food gatherings, sometimes antique car exhibitions, which are quite fun.

The Market Square is located in the center of the old city. It is much smaller than the town hall squares in other German cities. There are many pubs near the square, and the beer of many old shops has won awards in Europe or Germany. You may as well pick one to taste the famous local beer.
