Vallée de la Pétrusse

109 reviews
Vallée de la Pétrusse is also known asVallée de la Pétrusse, a rift about 100 m wide and about 60 m deep that runs across Luxembourg City, naturally separating the high ground of the old town from the new district by the train station. The gorge once served as Luxembourg City's natural barrier, and remnants of fortifications such as bastions, gun ports, and secret passages still remain between the cliffs. It was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1994. Today the gorge has returned to nature, with towering trees spreading layers of green shade and the Pétrusse stream quietly flowing along the valley floor. Stone steps from the plaza side lead all the way down to the valley floor, and along the shaded path you can look up to see the Pont Adolphe spanning the gorge and the arch of the old bridge. The path is gentle, suitable for walking, jogging, and cycling. If you only want to view it from a distance, stand on the plaza or on the bridge spanning the gorge and the canyon's greenery and the old town roofs will appear in the same view. On misty mornings, the valley floor is shrouded in fog, which further accentuates the canyon's depth. In summer, you can also take the open-air sightseeing train Pétrusse express and, with commentary, view the canyon's military remains and natural scenery.Luxembourg City · 26.9km from Ettelbruck

Pont Adolphe

Pont Adolpheis a stone arch bridge spanning the Vallée de la Pétrusse. It was built between 1900 and 1903 during the reign of Grand Duke Adolphe and was named after him. Since there was already an older bridge over the gorge, locals still habitually call this bridge the "new bridge." Its main arch has a span of approx. 85 m, and the bridge deck is approx. 42 m above the valley floor. When it was built, it was the largest-span stone arch bridge in the world. Two parallel giant arches support the bridge, making it a well-known city symbol of Luxembourg. One end of the bridge connects to the old town on the high ground, and the other end connects to the new district where the train station is located. The upper deck is for vehicles and pedestrians, and you can overlook the greenery of the gorge and the roofs of the old town from the railing. Below the bridge arches, there is a cantilevered lower walkway for pedestrians and cyclists. Walking on it, you can look up at the huge stone arches and get a different perspective to examine the structure of this century-old bridge. If you want to take a panoramic photo, you can head to a nearby plaza. Looking towards the gorge and the bridge from there is a common vantage point when visiting Luxembourg.Luxembourg City · 26.7km from Ettelbruck

Place de la Constitution is built on the foundation of the former "Beck Fortress," adjacent to the Cathedral of Notre-Dame on one side, and overlooks the Vallée de la Pétrusse from the railing on the other. The heart of the square is the "Monument of Remembrance," completed in 1923 to commemorate the thousands of Luxembourgers who volunteered to fight in the Allied armies during World War I. At the top of the over 20 m high granite obelisk stands a gilded statue of the Goddess of Victory, created by local sculptor Claus Cito, with her arms outstretched holding a laurel wreath. Below the base, two bronze soldier statues—one lying down and one sitting—depict a scene of sacrifice and mourning. Locals call it the "Golden Lady," and many Chinese tourists also call this place "Little Golden Person Square." During World War II, the monument was dismantled by occupying forces, and the golden statue was hidden under the stands of the national football stadium. It was not rediscovered until 1981, and after being restored and rebuilt in 1984–1985, the victims of World War II were added to those commemorated. Looking out from the railing, the sight of the Adolphe Bridge spanning the valley complements the spires of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame. The underground fortifications of the former fortress remain within the rock walls beneath the square, allowing you to connect the valley trail and the Old Town loop for a combined visit.Luxembourg City · 26.6km from Ettelbruck

Le Chemin de la Corniche is a section of the rampart walkway atop the cliffs of the Old Town in Luxembourg City, built by the Spanish and French in the 17th century, extending from the Bock promontory to the foot of the Saint-Esprit Citadel. It was originally part of the fortifications, with steps in steep sections. After the citadel was demolished, the steps were leveled, and most of the outer defensive walls with gun ports were removed, transforming it into a gentle and open viewing promenade. Leaning over the railing to look down, the Alzette River winds along the valley floor, the red-tiled roofs of the Grund district spread along the slopes, the spire of St. John's Church and Neumünster Abbey are nestled in the valley, and the Rham Plateau on the opposite side is also in full view. The evening sun slanting across the cliffs and roofs makes for a popular photo opportunity. One end of the walkway is adjacent to the Bock Casemates, and the Wenzel Circular Walk also passes through here. After exploring the high ground, you can follow the stone steps down to the riverside to look back up at this promenade suspended on the cliff from the valley floor.Luxembourg City · 26.6km from Ettelbruck

Beaufort Castle is located in the town of Beaufort in eastern Luxembourg, situated in the picturesque Müllerthal region, and is a highly representative historical site of the area. The castle complex consists of two parts: the medieval castle ruins built in the 11th century, and the Renaissance castle constructed in the 17th century. The ancient castle features thick stone walls, towers, dungeons, and defensive structures. Although some parts of the buildings have become ruins, the overall outline is well preserved, allowing visitors to directly experience the structure and living environment of a European feudal castle.Beaufort · 13.6km from Ettelbruck

Notre-Dame Cathedral of Paris

4.7/5
2.5k reviews
Notre-Dame Cathedral of Paris stands on the Île de la Cité on the banks of the Seine, built approx. between 1163 and 1250, and has witnessed the historical changes of Paris. This Gothic-style cathedral is world-famous due to the poetic description by French writer Victor Hugo in his novel of the same name, "Notre-Dame Cathedral of Paris". Notre-Dame Cathedral of Paris stands on the Île de la Cité in the middle of the Seine, with construction beginning in 1163 and largely completed by the mid-13th century. It is a masterpiece of French Gothic architecture and widely known due to Victor Hugo's novel of the same name. A fire in 2019 destroyed its spire and wooden roof structure, but after years of restoration, the cathedral reopened to visitors in December 2024, with the bell tower's summit access resuming shortly after. This phoenix-like structure has regained its status as one of Paris's most popular destinations. The cathedral's façade features three portals adorned with reliefs and statues depicting biblical stories, along with a row of royal stone figures, showcasing Gothic sculptural artistry at its finest. Inside, the restored stone walls and vaulted ceilings, now free of centuries-old soot, appear strikingly bright, while the three rose windows dazzle with color—particularly the southern one. The grand organ, with nearly 8,000 pipes and restored over several years, is equally worth admiring. Climbing the bell tower is a highlight: visitors ascend over 400 steps, passing the fantastical "gallery of chimeras" added during 19th-century renovations, where stone carvings of beasts and mythical creatures perch at railings—including the famous pensive "Stryge" gazing over Paris. The 17th-century "Emmanuel" bell, weighing over ten tons and rarely rung except on major occasions, can also be seen. From the nearly 70 m-high rooftop terrace, panoramic views encompass both banks of the Seine, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and Sacré-Cœur, while the restored wooden framework and rebuilt spire can be examined up close between the towers. Practical tips: The tower climb requires moderate physical fitness, with narrow stairs and some crouch-walking sections; advance reservations for time slots are recommended due to limited capacity. Beneath the square in front lies the Crypte Archéologique de l'Île de la Cité, displaying urban relics from Roman times onward, with its entrance on the square. As the cathedral remains an active place of worship, visitors are asked to maintain quiet during masses.France · Paris

The Notre-Dame Church is located in the center of Luxembourg city and was built between 1613 and 1621. The church was originally a mission school. After the expansion project in 1935, three pointed hats were added to become the Church of Our Lady, and the interior is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The structure of the north door of the church is the product of a combination of Renaissance Art and Baroque styles. The interior of the church is resplendent, decorated with exquisite Baroque organ platforms and huge royal vaults, the inner altar is decorated with precious alabaster statues, and the wall columns are carved with Allah-style images. It is said that there are royal tombs in the basement. In the fifth week after Easter every year, thousands of pilgrims from Luxembourg gather here for a solemn pilgrimage. At the same time, it is also the place where royal ceremonies and ceremonies are held. The king of Luxembourg and the princess of Belgium held a grand wedding ceremony here.Luxembourg City · 26.6km from Ettelbruck

This famous street leads to the Adolf Bridge on the side of the canyon, and many big banks have offices on both sides of this street. The Petros Canyon, also known as the Luxembourg Grand Canyon, is one of the world's famous scenic spots. It is about 100 meters wide and 60 meters deep, naturally dividing Luxembourg City into two urban areas, the new and old areas in the north and south. Constitution Square is the best place to view the Grand Canyon and the scenery on both sides. Opposite the Grand Canyon, there is a palace-like building located in the green, which looks particularly magnificent. It is the Luxembourg National Savings Bank. At its north end is a tall pointed round bell tower, and on both sides are medieval buildings with only roofs visible.

The Adolphe Bridge, located in Luxembourg City, is a sturdy stone arch bridge spanning the Petrus Valley. Its greyish-white structure is quite substantial. Standing in the center, you can see the old town and treetops on both sides of the valley. Cars passing by in the adjacent lanes cause the bridge surface to vibrate slightly. Several walkways allow you to descend and admire the arches extending overhead. There's a viewing platform on the bridge, where tourists often lean against the railings to take photos. The bridge isn't very long, taking only a few minutes to walk across, but it's perfect for enjoying the scenery.

The square has a long history, and it seems that almost every major event is celebrated or commemorated here. Some of the most exciting political rallies on earth have been held in the square. In the 1840s, the Communists and the right-wing government were engaged in a fierce struggle.

I came to Paris with my family, initially thinking that seeing the architecture and taking photos at Notre Dame would be enough. However, since we were already there, I decided to try a Chinese-speaking guided tour. This decision proved to be absolutely right. It was probably the most worthwhile guided tour of our entire European trip, as I learned a lot of religious knowledge I didn't know before. The guide, I think his surname was Li, spoke very naturally, not just reading from a textbook, but connecting the history, architecture, religious stories, and development of Notre Dame with the development of Paris, incorporating a lot of information. Many things I initially thought I wouldn't understand became clear after listening. Especially the stories of the sculptures, rose windows, and fire restoration – seeing them after hearing them made all the difference. Europe is full of churches, and not understanding them can be quite frustrating. After today's tour, I felt like I had a sudden enlightenment. There was a small regret, though: some areas inside Notre Dame aren't free and require separate admission. We met at 4:30 PM today, and waited in line for 10 minutes to enter. The pace of the tour was excellent; the content was rich but not tiring, and there was no feeling of being rushed. We could ask questions anytime during the tour, and the guide patiently answered them. He was highly professional and very approachable. Today, after the Notre Dame tour, we also visited the Latin Quarter of Shakespeare and Company. This wasn't part of the tour itinerary, but the teacher gave us extra time for free because we enjoyed it. By the way, you can also pay to climb to the top of Notre Dame, but the kids couldn't climb, so we skipped it... Afterwards, we went back inside Notre Dame on our own and watched a mass. We found that because we had the guided tour, we understood many parts much better than before when we just took photos. If it's your first time in Paris, I highly recommend not trying to see it on your own. Notre Dame is free, but the guided tour is definitely worth it; it significantly enhances the entire experience. It was one of the most worthwhile activities on our trip, and I've already recommended it to anyone planning a trip to Paris. Also, try to go after 4:30 PM, otherwise the square gets very sunny. Also, Notre Dame has a dress code; you can't wear anything too revealing...

The food was mediocre and not worth the price, but the scenery was nice; we saw the entire Seine River in two hours. The service was poor; the set meal included a bottle of wine, and after I finished the first glass the waiter poured for me, it took 20 minutes for them to refill it.
