Reviews: Galle Unawatuna Cooking Class

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 10/10 – Highly recommended We had an amazing experience at the Galle Unawatuna Cooking Class with Madhu. From the start everything was well organised and personal. We were picked up from our hotel, then went to the fish market to buy fresh tuna and visited the local vegetable market to choose seasonal produce. The cooking took place in Madhu’s family home, together with her and her mum. The kitchen was very clean and welcoming, and Madhu makes all her spices at home, which made the experience feel truly authentic. She even surprised us by preparing a birthday cake for my friend, which was incredibly thoughtful. After cooking, we sat down and enjoyed the delicious meal we had prepared together. A warm, genuine and memorable Sri Lankan experience.

My partner and I were incredibly lucky to do a private cooking class with Piumi (and the world's most adorable sous chef, Paffu). We made 9 curries, coconut sambal, and coconut roti. Piumi answered our endless stream of questions with patience and knowledge, and we had a lot of fun. The food was exceptional, especially the eggplant curry and the pineapple curry. Armed with new skills and all the recipes, were so excited to make these dishes when we get home. Thank you so much for having us and welcoming us with such hospitality - it's a memory we will cherish for years to come.

The cooking class with Susanthi was a wonderful experience for our family (teenage girls age 13 and 16). The visit to the fish market and vegetable market to select the ingredients for the meal was a real highlight. Susanthi is a wealth of knowledge and the cooking tuition was friendly, relaxed and helpful. I would not hesitate to recommend this cooking experience to any travellers. The meal we all cooked and shared together at the end was incredible. Best wishes Susanthi and THANK YOU!

The cooking experience was excellent. Neela was very helpful, explained everything well and helped us produce a fabulous meal. We paid extra for the market which involved walking down the hill to the corner fruit and veg stall for a few items so that part was disappointing. Cooking outdoors with traditional cooking methods was a great experience. Pick up was organised easily and communication was great. You can nominate what time you want to do the class. We opted for 5pm and received a message that the tuk tuk was on it's way just before 5. Organised and payment sorted. On arrival we walked to the shop then we're given a short tour and talk about the village and medicinal uses of the Ayurveda school and products they grow for medicine. We were then taken to the small kitchen, introduced to the chef and provided with aprons and cup of tea. There were 2 of us which was comfortable in the space. Cooking was fun, easy and hands-on. Amazing that 7 dishes could be cooked within an hour. We sat down to eat and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Throughout the process Manju introduced us, explained the process, took several photos and spoke to us while we ate. There was the usual encouragement to purchase products (very expensive) and do a review on the spot as well as to have a massage afterwards. Recipes and photos were sent to us via WhatsApp and we were safely seen into a tuk tuk at the end, via the shop. All in all it was a great experience and we enjoyed learning to cook the various dishes and eating them. It was very expensive for what it was and l don't recommend including the village market as it really didn't exist (nor did a cocktail or beer).
