Sanxingdui Museum

Sanxingdui Museum is located at the northeast corner of the Sanxingdui site, a major historical and cultural site protected at the national level. It sits by the Yazi River in the west of Guanghan, a historic and cultural city in Sichuan Province, 38 km south of Chengdu and 26 km north of Deyang. It is a large modern thematic museum dedicated to an archaeological site. The museum broke ground in August 1992 and officially opened in October 1997. The Sanxingdui ancient site covers an area of 12 km² and dates back 3,000 to 5,000 years. It currently features well-preserved eastern, western, and southern city walls, as well as the inner city wall at Moon Bay. The Sanxingdui ancient site is regarded as one of the great archaeological discoveries of the 20th century, demonstrating that the Yangtze River basin, like the Yellow River basin, is part of the matrix of Chinese civilization, and it is hailed as the "source of Yangtze River civilization." The Sanxingdui artifacts are precious cultural heritage of humanity. Among the vast and spectacular array of cultural relics in China, they constitute one of the groups of artifacts that possess historical, scientific, cultural, and artistic value and are highly ornamental. Among these ancient Shu treasures, there are many bizarre and enigmatic bronze forms, including a 2.62 m tall bronze standing figure, a 1.38 m wide bronze mask, and even a 3.95 m tall bronze sacred tree, all of which can be called peerless masterpieces. The gold objects represented by the dazzling gold staff, and the jade and stone objects represented by the border zhang covered with patterns, are also mostly unprecedented rare treasures. The newly opened Sanxingdui Museum features an updated exhibition layout with three themed galleries: "Century Dream," "Majestic Royal Capital," and "Heaven, Earth, Man, and Gods." The exhibition halls are grand in scale with meticulous layout, and the content and rhythm of the exhibition route combine dynamic and static elements, rising and falling in waves. Through an interpretive approach that integrates knowledge, storytelling, visual appeal, and entertainment, it powerfully reveals the profound connotations of Sanxingdui artifacts, vividly reflects the brilliance of Sanxingdui civilization, and gives visitors the feeling of being there in person and roaming through an ancient kingdom. Sanxingdui Museum covers an area of approximately 33 hectares, with green space accounting for over 80%. The museum grounds feature beautiful scenery and a well-balanced layout of dynamic and static elements, with winding paths and broad avenues, weeping willows, ancient Shu curiosities, and lake views and island silhouettes. Everywhere reflects the perfect combination of culture and nature, the elegance and spontaneity, and the natural perfection of western Sichuan garden characteristics. The main building's exterior pursues a spirit that combines with the landforms, historical sites, and the sculptural art of artifacts, blending primitive meaning with modern flair. The exhibition hall carries a dual symbolism of "three stacked stars" and "the evolutionary course of human history." Outside the museum, there is also a grand archaistic sacrificial platform and a large performance venue for modern cultural and sports activities that echo the exhibition hall architecture from afar, expressing the ancient, majestic, and profound historical significance of Sanxingdui culture.Guanghan · 6.7km from downtown

Sanxingdui Site is named after three undulating mounds of loess within its territory, once poetically known as "three stars accompanying the moon." As the core site of the ancient Shu civilization, it is widely considered by scholars to be the capital of the ancient Shu Kingdom. Spanning over 10 square kilometers, its cultural deposits date from the late Neolithic period to the Shang and Zhou dynasties, covering nearly 2,000 years. In 1986, brick factory workers accidentally unearthed jade artifacts while digging for soil, leading to the discovery of two large sacrificial pits. Subsequent discoveries of multiple sacrificial pits have yielded bronze ware, gold artifacts, jade, and a large quantity of ivory, gradually piecing together the true appearance of the sacrificial ceremonies held by the ancient Shu people over 3,000 years ago. People often describe this encounter across millennia with the phrase, "Sleeping for 3,000 years, one awakening shocks the world." Almost every artifact unearthed here is shrouded in mystery: the bronze standing figure wears a tall crown with hands exaggeratedly clasped in front of the chest, though what it originally held remains a subject of debate; the bronze sacred tree, with its three layers of spreading branches and birds perched upon them, is widely believed to be related to the mythical Fusang tree; the gold staff is engraved with patterns of fish, birds, and humans, with various theories regarding its purpose; and the bronze mask with protruding eyes features column-like eyes extending outward and wing-like ears, possessing a style quite distinct from the bronze ware of the Central Plains. It is precisely these uniquely shaped artifacts that make the site an important testament to the diverse yet unified pattern of Chinese civilization, offering a glimpse into the ancient Shu people's imagination of deities and the universe.Guanghan · 7.9km from downtown

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is home to many adorable giant pandas, and you can observe these charming national treasures up close. Located in the northern suburbs of Chengdu, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is approx. 10 km from the city center, and its construction fully simulates the wild living environment of giant pandas, with lakes, streams, bamboo forests, lawns, and more. The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding has many "panda villas", which are enclosed leisure areas for pandas. Each features an outdoor yard and an indoor rest room. When the weather is cool, the giant pandas play in the yard, and visitors can watch the adorable pandas through the railings; when the weather is hot, the giant pandas hide in the air-conditioned rest rooms, and visitors can only watch them through the glass. Can I also see pandas in the new area of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding? Are there other things to do? You can also see pandas in the new area of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, and they are our hero pandas. The pandas' home is bigger, and their activity range is wider. Seeing pandas is the main draw, but there is plenty more to do and see. A must-visit is our landmark building — the internet-famous Panda Tower. As a new landmark of Chengdu, it stands at the highest point of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. The tower is 69.8 m tall with 11 floors. Its exterior resembles a giant bamboo shoot, while the interior is shaped like a blooming hibiscus flower. Inside, 81 platforms are distributed throughout, allowing visitors to enjoy the views of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding from multiple angles. There is also the Art Museum (New Building) located in the dense forest area of the new district, which uses emerging exhibition methods such as multi-sensory interaction, lighting installations, interactive installations, and thermal sensing to create immersive exhibition scenes for visitors. The new area of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding plans to set up science popularization display boards and interactive facilities with rich content and diverse forms in four major zones, so that visitors can learn about giant pandas while watching them and enhance their interactive experience. On festivals related to animal and environmental protection, themed science popularization activities will also be carried out for visitors of different age groups, such as interactive lectures, family-friendly science popularization, mystery exploration games, and other activities that combine education with entertainment. When you're tired from playing, you can also go enjoy a musical — "Panda": it vividly presents to the audience the scene of magical animals, with the giant panda as their representative, coexisting harmoniously, sharing nature, and loving life on the beautiful and fertile land of Chengdu, Sichuan. Through the form of a musical, it reflects the livable landscape of Chengdu, Sichuan, and the simple and leisurely life of the local people. In terms of total area, it has increased from the original 1,035 mu to 3,570 mu, expanding by 2.5 times. During the expansion, the original topography and landforms were fully followed and preserved, and the multi-level landscape belts of mountain valleys formed by mountain gullies and streams were utilized to create 11 giant panda venues, multiple science popularization venues, and visitor pedestrian streets and other sightseeing locations. After the expansion project is completed, it can accommodate no fewer than 180 giant pandas and companion animals such as red pandas and golden snub-nosed monkeys. As of now, multiple giant pandas and red pandas have moved into the "new homes" in the expansion area, and rare animals such as golden snub-nosed monkeys will also be waiting to welcome everyone in the future. Are the supporting facilities in the new area complete? In terms of design, the new area is equipped with ample visitor facilities in accordance with 5A attraction standards. It not only provides basic facilities such as sightseeing vehicles and tourist restrooms, but also equips the hill commercial street, the exit commercial street, and scattered commercial complexes in various zones with a large number of tourism service facilities. The planned business formats include dining, souvenir sales, postal services, cinemas, theaters, and experiential education, among others, and the quantity is sufficient to meet visitor demand. After nearly a year of operation, in response to the practical issues of the new area's large size and uneven distribution of supporting facilities, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding has added multiple beverage vending machines, direct drinking water dispensers, and shared convenience facilities throughout the new area to improve the visitor experience. Next, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding will further supplement and improve visitor rest facilities, inquiry service facilities, and guide and navigation facilities to meet visitor needs. The expanded Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding will help Chengdu build a demonstration site of harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature, improve conditions for giant panda research and conservation, protect biodiversity, fully demonstrate the brand value, cultural value, and economic value of giant pandas, and build the cultural tourism brand of "Sanxingdui, Jiuzhaigou, and Giant Pandas: A Leisurely Journey Through Sichuan." New businesses and projects such as the Panda Art Museum, IMAX Theater, and Panda Theater are now open, meeting visitors' needs for dining, entertainment, sightseeing, shopping, and leisure while they watch giant pandas. First, it is more conducive to scientific research and protection of pandas. As a nationally protected animal, the giant panda is gentle in temperament, adorable in appearance, and amusing in movement, and is deeply loved by the people. However, as the number of giant pandas continues to grow, problems in the old area of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, such as high population density and the inability to fully improve animal welfare in giant panda feeding and management, have become increasingly evident. The completion and operation of the new area of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding can effectively solve the above problems, comprehensively enhance the scientific research and protection level of giant pandas at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, and effectively safeguard the animal welfare of the park. Second, it is more conducive to enhancing the people's sense of happiness and fulfillment. As socialism with Chinese characteristics enters a new era, the principal contradiction in society has evolved into the contradiction between unbalanced and inadequate development and the people's ever-growing needs for a better life. At present, tourism has become a rigid demand for a better life among people in a moderately prosperous society and is widely favored by the public. Building the new area of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding conforms to the new trend of tourism consumption transformation and upgrading among the people and will effectively meet the people's high-quality and diversified tourism consumption needs, enhancing their sense of happiness and fulfillment. Third, it is more conducive to building a distinctive panda IP and supporting the construction of the park city demonstration zone. Since its establishment in 1987, the old area of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding has achieved internationally and domestically recognized results in giant panda scientific research and conservation, science popularization education, cultural tourism, and international exchanges. It has been recognized at home and abroad as a giant panda ex-situ conservation demonstration unit with strong scientific and technological capabilities in captive giant panda conservation, numerous scientific and technological achievements, and effective application and promotion results. It has been awarded the titles of "National Advanced Collective in Science Popularization Work," "National Youth Science and Technology Education Base," "National Science Popularization Education Base," "National Environmental Science Popularization Base," and "Cross-Strait Exchange and Cooperation Base," has twice undertaken "Key Cultural Exchange Projects of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee," and has twice won the United Nations "Global 500" award. The construction of the new area of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding will effectively enhance the image of China's tourism brand, build a panda-themed IP with international recognition, and help Chengdu accelerate the building of a world-renowned cultural city and a park city demonstration zone that practices the new development philosophy.Chengdu · 29.5km from Guanghan

We sincerely commend our guide during this visit to the Sanxingdui Museum. They were dedicated and responsible, their explanations were well-prepared, and their explanations of the historical background and archaeological knowledge of artifacts such as the bronze sacred tree and the mask with protruding eyes were professional and rigorous, not just rote recitation. Throughout the visit, they catered to the children's pace, patiently answered all our questions, and were incredibly attentive and considerate. It was this dedication and enthusiasm that allowed us to understand the charm of the ancient Shu civilization and learn so much. We are very grateful! We benefited immensely!

The Sanxingdui Archaeological Site Park is mainly composed of three exhibition areas, namely "Western City Wall Relics", "Yan Family Courtyard·Moon Bay" and "Sanxingdui·Sacrificial Pit·Archaeological Work Station", and the Sanxingdui Museum, which basically displays the cultural features and development level of the ancient Shu culture. In 2010, the Sanxingdui Archaeological Site Park became one of the first "National Archaeological Site Parks".

Sanxingdui Site – The Origin of the Yangtze River Civilization, a Site That Shook the World. Located on the south bank of the Yazi River in Guanghan City, Sichuan Province, the site covers an area of 12 km², with the core ancient city covering approximately 3.6 km². It is the largest, most complete, and longest-lasting ancient Shu capital site discovered in Southwest China to date. Latest Archaeological Progress (to be released in 2025): Precise Dating: Sacrificial pits 3, 4, 6, and 8 have a 95.4% probability of dating to 1201–1012 BC (Late Shang Dynasty). Artifacts from pits 1, 2, 3, 7, and 8 can be pieced together, confirming they were buried at the same time. New Casting Techniques: The "core-strip core support" bronze casting method was discovered for the first time, filling a gap in Chinese Bronze Age technology. Gold Usage: The total weight of unearthed gold artifacts exceeds 2 kg, the highest in China for the same period; gold masks and gold foil ornaments were refined using a gold-silver alloy and ash blowing method. Silk Traces: Silk residue was detected in multiple sacrificial pits, proving that people wore gold and brocade 3,000 years ago. Key artifacts: A large bronze mask (131 cm wide, weighing 131 catties, the world's largest Shang Dynasty bronze mask); a gold-masked bronze human head (42.5 cm, made from gold-plated wood, with openwork eyes and eyebrows); and over 5,000 other artifacts including a bronze sacred tree, a bird-shaped bronze bell, ivory carvings, and jade cong, showcasing the unique cosmology of the ancient Shu Kingdom. Sanxingdui buried the ancient Shu Kingdom's gold mask, bronze sacred tree, and silk sacrificial robes in late Shang Dynasty sacrificial pits. Their discovery today serves as the most dazzling evidence that the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers are both part of the mother river of Chinese civilization.

You can observe giant pandas very closely; the enclosure is divided into indoor and outdoor sections. The overall design is beautiful and perfect for taking photos. If you want to see the popular panda Hua Hua, you need to enter the park early to queue. The red pandas are also very cute. I highly recommend buying a sightseeing bus ticket for easy transportation and a comfortable, low-impact experience. When there are crowds waiting for the sightseeing bus, the wait can be quite long.

1. Immersive exhibition experience The exhibition design of Sanxingdui Museum is a fusion of modernity and historical depth. The new museum (Bronze Museum) uses spiral architecture to symbolize the Sanxingdui of the ancient Shu civilization and the evolution of human history. Through the interaction of light and shadow and layered display cabinets, the museum presents the bronze sacred tree, golden mask and other cultural relics in an almost "suspended" posture, which has a strong visual impact. Especially the 3.96-meter-high bronze sacred tree, with its scattered branches and details of bird and animal patterns, combined with sound and light explanations, makes people feel as if they are at the ancient Shu sacrifice site. It is recommended to rent smart guide equipment (about 20 yuan/time), which can restore the original appearance of cultural relics through AR technology, and the experience is far better than traditional museums. 2. Must-see cultural relics highlights 1. Bronze standing figure: The 2.62-meter-high bronze standing figure, with its hands clasped in a posture that remains a mystery, and the pattern of its clothing is clearly visible, which is an important basis for studying the clothing culture of ancient Shu. 2. Golden Mask: The golden mask with a gold content of 85% and an exaggerated hollow eye design show the ancient Shu people's worship of "divine eyes". 3. Golden Staff of the Shang Dynasty: weighing 463 grams, engraved with fish and bird patterns, it may be a symbol of the ancient Shu kingship. 4. Tongtian Divine Tree: The bronze-cast "Cosmic Tree" with nine branches symbolizing "nine suns", echoing the "Ten Sun Myth" recorded in the "Classic of Mountains and Seas". III. Practical Tour Suggestions - Transportation: From Chengdu, it is recommended to take the high-speed rail (18 minutes to Guanghan North Station) or the "Tianfuxing" scenic area through bus (round trip is about 50 yuan) to avoid the problem of self-driving and parking. - Time arrangement: It is recommended to reserve 4 hours and arrive before 9 am to avoid the peak of tour groups. If you have enough time, you can combine it with the Jinsha Ruins Museum (Sanxingdui Tourist Through Bus Line 2 has opened a special line connecting the two places). - Dining recommendations: There are only simple meals in the museum. It is recommended to go to the center of Guanghan after the tour to taste special delicacies such as silk-wrapped rabbit and Lianshan twice-cooked pork. The average consumption per person is about 40 yuan. IV. Cultural experience and interaction The cultural and creative products of Sanxingdui can be called "Internet celebrities" in the museum industry. Bronze mask ice cream (matcha flavor "bronze", chocolate flavor "unearthed") is a must-have for checking in, and the archaeological blind box "Three Stars and Moon" series combines bronze portraits with rock elements, which is both interesting and collectible. In addition, the museum regularly holds ancient Shu theme script killing (reservations must be made in advance), and participants can immerse themselves in the archaeological process by deciphering clues to cultural relics. V. Surroundings and accommodation - Guanghan City: It is recommended to stay at Shangkeyou Hotel (Sanxingdui theme room is about 200 yuan/night), the terrace on the 5th floor overlooks the night view of Yazi River, and the snack street can be reached by walking 1.3 kilometers. - Extended attractions: Guanghan Fanghu Park, Longju Temple and other niche attractions are sparsely populated and quiet, suitable for in-depth tours. VI. Personal Reflection The charm of Sanxingdui lies in its duality of "unsolved mystery" and "civilization dialogue". Standing in front of the bronze vertical-eyed mask, its bulging eyes and wide mouth are both strange and familiar - it is different from the realistic style of the bronze ware in the Central Plains, and has a subtle similarity with the statues of the Mayan civilization. This civilizational resonance across regions and time and space makes people wonder: Did the ancient Shu people
