Borobudur Temple

Borobudur is located about 40 kilometers northwest of Yogyakarta. It is the largest Buddhist architectural complex in the world and is listed as a world cultural heritage. Borobudur means "a pagoda on a hill", but there is no written record of who built it and it is very mysterious. When you come to the Borobudur Stupa, you will definitely be shocked by it. This big Buddhist pagoda is built with local volcanic rock. The tower is 10 layers and consists of 6 huge square platforms, 3 circular platforms and the middle dome. The base is more than 100 meters long and the total height is more than 40 meters. It is quite majestic . There are more than 2,600 reliefs and more than 500 Buddha statues on the pagoda. Climbing up the steps can take a closer look. The stone walls of the corridors on each floor are full of lifelike reliefs, with delicate and exquisite carvings and various patterns. Some depict Buddhist stories, and some vividly reflect the daily life of the people and various livestock, flowers, birds, fish and insects. The Buddha statues, large and small, have different expressions and postures, which are enough to look at for a long time. Climbing to the top, you can see the pointed dome in the middle, which is surrounded by more than 70 Buddha statues sitting in the hollowed-out stupa. The scene is very awe-inspiring. You can see the Buddha statues inside through the hollowed out stupa, and there are also a few Buddha statues that are half exposed, taller than people, and particularly eye-catching. When the weather is fine, standing at the top of the pagoda can overlook Mount Merapi, and these sitting Buddha statues seem to be staring into the distance just like you, which is very artistic. Borobudur is also a good place to watch the sunrise. Many people make a special trip in the early morning when it is quiet, waiting for the sun to rise and the sun to shine on the pagodas and Buddha statues.Borobudur · 67.9km from Java

Prambanan Temple

Prambanan is a very magnificent Hindu temple in Indonesia. It has been damaged by many volcanoes and earthquakes. There are more than 50 temple ruins. Prambanan was built in the 8th to 10th centuries AD, about the same era as Angkor Wat in Cambodia, and has many similarities in architectural form and sculptural themes. The temple has three-story courtyards. Most of the buildings on the outer two floors are in ruins. Only the inner layer preserves several temples. The three magnificent main temples are dedicated to Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu, and the other three small temples are respectively. Enshrined in their mounts divine bull, divine goose and condor. Like Borobudur, Prambanan Temple is also built of volcanic rock, and the walls are covered with exquisite reliefs, but its content is mostly based on the Indian epic "Ramayana". Compared with Angkor Wat, although the same story is told, the artistic style and characters are quite different.Prambanan · 36.4km from Java

The Water Palace is located in the southwest of the Sultan's Palace in Yogyakarta. It is a complex of canals, ponds and palaces. It used to be the palace's luxury entertainment park, swimming pools and waterways for the Sultan and his entourage to travel. This elaborate retreat was built between 1758 and 1765 by a Portuguese architect. Most of what you see today are the relics of the past, and the landscape bathing pool that is more representative of the water palace was rebuilt later.Kraton · 52.1km from Java

Mt Bromo

108 reviews
Mt Bromo is an active volcano in eastern Java, Indonesia, part of the Tengger volcanic complex, with an elevation of approx. 2,329 m. It stands in the center of the ancient Tengger caldera, which is approx. 10 km in diameter, surrounded by a vast, sparsely vegetated Sea of Sand covered in volcanic ash. The crater is approx. 800 m long from north to south, approx. 600 m wide from east to west, and approx. 247 m deep. It emits white sulfurous smoke year-round and is the currently active volcano within the Tengger volcanic complex. Mt Bromo offers a classic experience: heading to a viewpoint on the ridge in the early morning to watch the sunrise. As the morning light gradually colors the Sea of Sand, the white smoke rising from the crater stands out against the morning glow. The cone of Mount Semeru Volcano in the distance and the perfectly conical Mount Batok nearby create a distinct skyline, with a sea of clouds rolling beneath your feet. After sunrise, visitors typically take a 4WD jeep across the black Sea of Sand, arrive at the foot of the volcano, and climb the stairs to the crater's edge to experience the smoking crater and the strong scent of sulfur up close. You can also ride a horse across the Sea of Sand, passing the Poten Hindu Temple in the center—the spiritual center for the local Tenggerese Hindus. The volcano is also a sacred site for the Tenggerese people. Every year, devotees hold the Yadnya Kasada festival, throwing offerings such as fruit, flowers, and livestock into the crater to express gratitude to the mountain gods. This tradition has continued for centuries, making Mt Bromo not only a natural wonder but also a place of unique cultural significance.Indonesia · Tosari

Shaded by coconut groves, the environment is quite peaceful. The island covers an area of approx. 0.07 km², and it takes approx. 30 minutes to walk around the island. Small jetties, pavilions, and fine white sand along the coast form the backdrop of the entire island. Coral reefs are distributed around the island, making it one of the go-to spots for snorkeling and diving in the Thousand Islands. Activities on the island include sunbathing and swinging by the beach. You can also ride jet skis, banana boats, or kayaks. Jakarta Old Town

Jakarta Old Town is the birthplace of the city. It was formerly Batavia, built by the Dutch in the 17th century, and served for a long time as the capital during the Dutch East Indies period and the headquarters of the Dutch East India Company in Asia. The old town retains clusters of Dutch-style red brick buildings, and the layout of cobblestone squares, old canal streets, and old warehouses continues to this day. You can also visit the adjacent Glodok Chinatown along the way. The heart of the old town is Taman Fatahillah, surrounded by colonial-era buildings: the former Batavia City Hall is now the Jakarta History Museum. Beside the square, there is also the Wayang Museum, which displays traditional Indonesian shadow puppets and marionettes, as well as the Museum Mandiri and Museum Bank Indonesia, which were converted from old bank buildings and are all within walking distance. You can often encounter folk performances on the square. Ondel-Ondel, giant puppets wearing painted masks, are a common form of performance. You can also rent a vintage bicycle to ride around the square. Heading north from the square along the old canal street, you will pass the Kota Intan Drawbridge, which dates back to the 17th century. Further north is the Sunda Kelapa Old Harbor area, where the Maritime Museum is housed in a former Dutch warehouse. The old town is not large, and the main attractions can be connected on foot.West Jakarta · 6.4km from downtown

Visiting Prambanan Temple was one of the most memorable experiences of my journey in Indonesia. As I approached the temple complex, I was immediately amazed by the grandeur of its towering structures and the intricate carvings that adorned the ancient stones. The beauty of the place reflects not only the artistic skills of the people who built it but also their deep religious devotion and rich cultural heritage. What made the experience unique was the opportunity to witness a historical and sacred place that has stood for centuries. Walking around the temple complex allowed me to appreciate the stories, beliefs, and traditions passed down through generations. Each structure seemed to carry a story of its own, reminding me that temples are more than architectural masterpieces; they are also expressions of the spirituality, identity, and worldview of the people who built them.I was particularly fascinated by the way the temples stood tall against th sky, creating a beautiful contrast

Buying online is cheaper than on site. Came during peak period, on site price was RP440k for International, and RP400k for Local. Go early. We reached at 12pm and did not have time to finish the place. Wait time is between 0mins for kids rides to 30mins. Food within the themepark is reasonably priced with drinks as low as Rp10k, and snacks from Rp15k. Overall a great experience for us and the kids. Kids need a minimum height of 100m for the rides.

The Water Palace isn't very large, but it's a well-known local attraction and worth seeing from a cultural perspective. Walking from one end to the other without a guided tour should take about twenty minutes. After buying your ticket and entering, you can look back; you can go up to either side of the palace gate. The signs in front and behind offer panoramic views. Inside, you'll find the bathing pools.

Hiking Mount Bromo at dawn is a pilgrimage into the surreal. The walk across the vast, ashen Sea of Sand toward the steaming crater feels otherworldly. The sight of the sun igniting the sky behind the Tengger caldera is pure, unforgettable magic.Crucial Tips: Start in pitch dark from Penanjakan for the iconic sunrise viewpoint. Dress for near-freezing pre-dawn temperatures that turn warm after sunrise. Wear a mask and sturdy, closed shoes for the deep volcanic ash. Hire a local guide for the safest route through the shifting sands. This raw, elemental landscape demands respect and rewards it profoundly.
