Putuo Mountain is the sacred site of Guanyin Bodhisattva, renowned as the "Putuo Mountain Scenic Area." Visitors and pilgrims never miss the three grand temples—Puji, Fayu, and Huiji—along with the 33m-tall Nanhai Guanyin statue. The mountain's charming coastal scenery adds to its allure, offering delightful experiences like strolling along Qianbu Sands and admiring the reclining Buddha view over the sea. Putuo Mountain Island is located east of Zhoushan Island, with no road access—only ferry service to Putuo Mountain Pier is available. The elongated island spans approx. 7 km in length, with attractions spaced 2–10 km apart. Nearby attractions can be explored on foot, while distant ones are accessible via the island's itinerary buses departing from the pier's passenger terminal. Additionally, Foding Mountain offers cable car rides, and Luojia Mountain—a small island approx. 5 km east of Putuo Mountain—is reachable by boat (accessible exclusively from Putuo Mountain Island as part of the Putuo Mountain Scenic Area). The attractions in Putuo Mountain Scenic Area are mainly distributed across three zones. Visitors can explore all attractions within each zone together, with each zone requiring approximately half a day to visit. Travelers can plan their itinerary based on their accommodation location and arrival time on the island. Zone 1: Centered around Puji Temple, the western side of the island features attractions like the West Heaven Scenic Area. As the island's main temple dedicated to Guanyin, Puji Temple stands alongside the Duobao Pagoda, one of Putuo Mountain's three treasures. The West Heaven Scenic Area boasts numerous attractions including Pantuo Rock, Heart Character Rock, and Meifu Temple. Zone 2: In the southern area, you'll find attractions like the Nanhai Guanyin statue, Zizhu Forest, Bukenqu Guanyin Temple, and Nantian Gate. The Nanhai Guanyin statue is the island's landmark structure, while Bukenqu Guanyin Temple holds legendary tales of Putuo Mountain that you won't want to miss. Zone 3: Centered around Foding Mountain, the area features two temples: Fayu Temple and Huiji Zen Temple. The other two treasures of Mount Putuo - the Nine Dragons Caisson Ceiling and the Yangzhi Guanyin Stele - are located in Fayu Temple and Yangzhi Zen Temple adjacent to it respectively. If time permits, you can also take a boat to Luojia Mountain, which typically requires about half a day. In addition to these religious attractions, there are two bathing beaches on the eastern side of the island: Thousand-Step Sand near Fayu Temple and Hundred-Step Sand near Purple Bamboo Grove. Visitors who enjoy ocean views and water activities are welcome to visit.Zhoushan · 17.5km from downtown

Puji Temple

Puji Zen Temple, also known as the "front temple", is the main temple dedicated to Guanyin in the whole mountain. It has a quiet artistic conception and is a good place to worship and pray. Puji Zen Temple, Fayu Temple and Huiji Temple are known as the three major temples. It is also a temple with relatively strong incense on Putuo Mountain. During holidays, it is often crowded with tourists and pilgrims. Entering the temple, you will pass a stone archway. Next to it is a stele engraved with "Civil and military officials, soldiers, civilians, etc., dismount here". When you arrive here, you will start your tour of Puji Zen Temple. After passing the stone archway is the Imperial Stele Pavilion, and then go forward to Haiyin Pond. It is the release pond of the Zen temple. There are many red carps in the pond. In summer, the lotus flowers in the pond are very beautiful. There are three bridges on the pond, and there are stone benches on the bridges. It feels great to sit on the bridges and enjoy the scenery. To the east of the pond, the Yongshou Arch Bridge and its reflection between the white clouds and ancient trees have always been a murderous scene. There is a screen wall in front of the bridge, on which are written the five characters "Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva", and many tourists take pictures here. In front of Haiyin Pond is the main building of Puji Zen Temple. Along the central line, there are Yuantong Hall, Sutra Library, Abbot Hall and other halls. There are bell towers, drum towers, side halls, guest rooms and other buildings on both sides of the main hall. The layout has some Qing Dynasty palace style. Among them, Yuantong Hall is the main hall of Puji Zen Temple. "Yuantong" is another name for Guanyin Bodhisattva. It is Guanyin Bodhisattva enshrined here, which is equivalent to the main hall of a general temple. In addition to the large space and exquisite architecture, the unique feature of Yuantong Hall is the male Guanyin inside, as well as the thirty-two response bodies of Guanyin Bodhisattva, which is the appearance of the Bodhisattva when he appears in the legend. You can ask for some incense in the temple, and many people pray here every day. The Duobao Pagoda on the southeast side of the temple is built with Taihu stones, which can be seen from a distance in Haiyin Pond. The Xitian Attraction on the west side is a good place to watch the sunset, while the Baibusha Beach, more than 100 meters to the east, is a good place for swimming in summer.Zhoushan · 17.3km from downtown

Qianbu Beach in Putuoshan Scenic Area, Zhoushan City, is one of the larger beaches in the Putuoshan Scenic Area. Located on the eastern coast of the scenic area, it's not far from Fayu Temple in the north. Stretching nearly 2 kilometers from Jibao Ridge in the south to Wanghaiting in the northeast, Qianbu Beach is more expansive and has finer sand than Baibu Beach in Putuoshan Scenic Area to its south, making it a great place for strolling and enjoying the sea view. Many tourists choose to come here after their mountain and temple visits, walking barefoot on the beach, feeling the sea breeze and listening to the sound of the tide. A leisurely stroll on the sand washes away the day's fatigue. At the northern end of the beach, there is a large rock that is exposed at low tide, inscribed with the words "Listening to the Tide." Stone steps lead up to Wanghaiting, offering a panoramic view of the boundless sea.In addition, you can also see the reclining Buddha of Luojia Mountain in the sea from Qianbu Dasha in Putuoshan Scenic Area, Zhoushan City. If you want to watch the sunrise over the sea, it is recommended to stay in a hotel near Qianbu Dasha in Putuoshan Scenic Area, Zhoushan City. Check the sunrise time and get up early to walk to the beach to watch the sunrise. Chaoyang Cave, where Putuoshan Scenic Area-Baibusha and Putuoshan Scenic Area-Qianbu Dasha meet, is a good place to watch the sunrise in Putuoshan Scenic Area. Taking a walk in the evening at Qianbu Dasha in Putuoshan Scenic Area, Zhoushan City, and watching the moon and the night view of Putuoshan Scenic Area is also a very poetic experience. The beach of Qianbu Dasha in Putuoshan Scenic Area, Zhoushan City is flat and wide, and the sand is very soft and clean. Although the swimming facilities are not as complete as those at Baibusha in Putuoshan Scenic Area, many tourists still swim here in the summer. If you want to swim, staying at a hotel near Qianbu Dasha in Putuoshan Scenic Area, Zhoushan City is a good choice. You can wear flip-flops and walk to the beach to play in the water, then shower and change clothes back at the hotel. Shancai Cave is located in the northeast of Putuo Mountain and is the same scenic spot as Fanyin Cave. Shancai Cave is dedicated to the boy of Shancai. Because of the intention of attracting wealth and treasures, pilgrims from Fujian and overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia all go to Shancai Cave to seek wealth. Now tourists from all over the world come to Shancai Cave to seek wealth. The ancient cave faces the sea on both sides, and the back of the nunnery is steeper with a blue sea and undulating. There is a green hill in front of the screen, and the birds are singing and the flowers are fragrant. Standing still in front of the cave, listening to the sound of the sea tide, there is no hustle and bustle near and far. It is said to be a hole, but it is not a hole. It is a stone crack about 1.5 meters deep and about 4 meters wide.Zhoushan · 19.9km from downtown

The Western Heaven Scenic District of Mount Putuo is located in the southwest of Mount Putuo Island. A showcase of the mountain's unusual rock features, it displays representative rock types such as the “the heart” rocks inscribed with the Chinese character “heart,” the “tilting giant” rocks balanced on the edge of high terraces, or the “tortoises” rocks, which resemble a pair of magical tortoises that, according to traditional stories, once attended a Buddhist sermon. Having diverse characteristics, these unusual rocks are regarded by many tourists as Mount Putuo's iconic landscape. Even though the mountain is not very tall, there are many scenic attractions. The Fanyin Cave is located on the eastern side of Putuo. In the many caves of Putuo Mountain, the Fanyin Cave is magnificent. Compared with other scenic spots on the Putuo Mountain, the Fanyin Cave is a relatively quiet place. Look at the sea, listen to the tide, but more open and quiet of the land of Buddhism. There is a sacred pavilion on the Fanyin Cave. It can be seen in front of the sea and behind the cave. It is a great place for the view of the Fanyin Cave. The cave is deep and quiet. Under the action of the sunshine tide, the rocks in the cave are strange and unpredictable. The sound of the tide of the sea tide is like a dragon and a tiger, and the "Tianmen Qing Fan" of one of the 12 scenic spots of Putuo refers to the sound of the Fanyin Cave. Wonderful scenery.Zhoushan · 20.2km from downtown

Puji Temple (commonly known as the Front Temple) is located at the southern foot of Lingjiu Peak on Baihua Peak of Putuo Mountain in Putuo District, Zhoushan City. It is one of the three major temples in Putuo Mountain, a famous Buddhist holy place in China. It is unique in planning, layout and architectural design. It is a typical representative of Chinese temple architecture and an important relic of official architecture in Zhejiang Province during the Qing Dynasty. It has high historical, cultural and artistic value. [1] Puji Temple covers an area of 26,000 square meters. The entire group of buildings faces south and was founded in the second year of Zhenming in the Later Liang Dynasty (916). It was rebuilt and destroyed many times. In the 28th year of Emperor Kangxi's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1689), Emperor Kangxi issued an edict to rebuild the temple during his southern tour and later gave it the inscription "Puji Qunling".

Fayu Temple offers free incense and is very close to Qianbu Beach. You can take a shuttle bus from the pier to Fayu Temple first, then walk to Qianbu Beach to watch the sunset! Baibu Beach is a bit of a distance away, but it's a filming location for Journey to the West!

The largest beach on Putuo Mountain, approximately 1,750 meters long, boasts soft, fine sand, a wide, flat surface, and a feeling of walking on brocade grass. At the northern end, the giant "Tingchao" rock reveals the rock below the surface. Stone steps lead up to the Seaview Pavilion, offering panoramic views of the sea and Mount Luojia. Enjoy sunrises in the morning, sunsets in the evening, and even the sight of small crabs at night. It's a perfect place to relax and connect with nature at any time of the year.

In the middle of Shancai Ancient Cave is a stone statue of Sakyamuni Buddha. Shancai Ancient Cave is called a cave, but it is not actually a cave, but a stone crevice 1.5 meters wide and 4 meters deep. Its shape resembles a dragon head, the cave mouth is a dragon mouth, a rock protrudes like a dragon tongue, two stones on the top of the cave stand like dragon horns, and the apricot yellow wall winds and rises like a dragon body, together it looks like a coiled dragon lying in the valley.

During my trip to Zhejiang, I visited the Putuoshan Scenic Area. The Xitian Scenic Area, also known as the "Western Paradise Scenic Area," is one of the many scenic spots within Putuoshan. Located southwest of the passenger terminal on the southeast side of Putuoshan, it's about a 20-minute walk away and is one of Putuoshan's most important rock formations. The main attractions in this area include: the Heart-shaped Stone, Xitianmen (West Heaven Gate), Pantuo Stone, the Two Turtles Listening to the Dharma Stone, Meifu Temple, and Guanyin Ancient Cave, among others.

Huiji Temple is located on the top of Foding Mountain in Putuo Mountain. You need to take a minibus to the cable car to get there. I heard that you can also climb the mountain to get to Fayu Temple, but it will be very tiring. Huiji Temple has a great view. Now the exit and entrance are separated. There is a place where you can look across to Zhoushan on the opposite side, and the sea view is open.

I like Fanyin Cave the most in Putuo Mountain. Standing at the minibus station, if you go left, you will find Shancai Cave, and if you go right, you will find Fanyin Cave. We chose to go to Fanyin Cave first, and then we went up the mountain road and soon arrived at the mountain gate, but we chose to go down. There is a small pavilion facing the sea with the back of the mountain, and we can hear the sound of the waves and the sea breeze. There happened to be a lama from Lhasa chanting here. We just sat there quietly, watching and listening for a long time. This is the most comfortable, eye-catching and reassuring place for me. Continue to go down from the small pavilion. There seems to be a small temple pavilion below. Enter the temple pavilion and go down to the underground. This is where the real Fanyin Cave is. Open the window and see a small stream of spring water seeping out of the mountain wall. If you are lucky, you can see the holy statue of Guanyin, the standing statue and the white Buddha head statue on the stone wall.
