Saga Castle is a castle located in the city of Saga. The ancient name Zuojia City, alias Shen City, Turtle City. Completed in the early Edo period, it is the seat of the Saga Domain's domain hall. Currently located in the center of Saga City. During the Saga Rebellion in the Meiji era, most of the buildings in the castle were burnt down, and only the Shizuo Gate and the Tsukugura have survived to this day, and they are now a national cultural property of Japan. Yanagawa, known as the world's water town, is an artificial river surrounded by the city. It is criss-crossed in Yanagawa City, with a total distance of 930 kilometers. This man-made river was originally used as a fortress, but also has various functions such as a disaster prevention function such as temporarily storing excess rainwater to prevent flooding of the river, and a water storage function such as water for agriculture and firefighting. Very beneficial to the public. The water there is very shallow, and the depth is not more than one meter. The boat sails down into the wind. Along the way, there are ancient Japanese houses, willows, and spring flowers. The boatman wearing Japanese clothes sings ancient songs in a unique cadence. At this time, if you have a glass of sake in your hand to drink, how comfortable it should be.Yanagawa · 5m from downtown

Shrines dedicated to the lords of the domain were built in various places from the late Edo period to the Meiji period, and Saga Shrine was one of them. Saga Shrine is located in the center of Saga City, and enshrines the 10th lord of Saga, Naomasa Nabeshima, and the 11th lord, Naohiro Nabeshima. Naomasa Nabeshima was committed to educational reform and talent cultivation, so he was worshipped as the god of learning. In addition, he was also worshipped as the god of culture and transportation. Naomasa Nabeshima was an outstanding role model who left great achievements in all aspects. At that time, the Saga domain implemented a frugal policy due to financial poverty. Naomasa Nabeshima set an example and implemented a frugal policy thoroughly. On the one hand, he built a teahouse in Jinno, which was open to ordinary people to enter and enjoy the cherry blossoms. People were grateful and worshipped Naomasa Nabeshima as the "God of Common People" after his death. Japanese people have always believed that odd numbers are numbers that bring good luck. Every year on January 1, the New Year, May 5, the Dragon Boat Festival, and September 9, the Double Ninth Festival, Saga Shrine is flooded with worshippers, which is very different from the usual quiet and sacred atmosphere. During the New Year period, a record of 350,000 worshippers was set, which was very lively.Saga City · 13.8km from Yanagawa

Ohori Park features a unique waterscape formed by its expansive lake, small islands scattered throughout, and the stone bridges that connect them. The lake was originally the moat of the Fukuoka Castle Ruins. The park opened in 1929, and the lake covers approx. half of the park's area. Nakanoshima Island is connected by several bridges, and the Ukimido Hall on the island is a representative view. The walking path around the lake is approx. 2 km long, making it suitable for walking, jogging, and cycling. Boat rental facilities are available by the lake, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenery of the lakeshore and islands from the water. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom along the lake, while in winter, water birds often stop by. The park also features a Japanese garden, the Fukuoka Art Museum, and a Noh theater. Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is a historic shrine in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, built over the grave of Sugawara no Michizane, and is an important center for Tenmangu shrines across Japan. Sugawara no Michizane was exiled to Dazaifu due to political strife during the Heian period and passed away there. He was later revered as the deity of learning and culture, making this a long-standing place of worship for those praying for academic success and success in exams. Upon entering the grounds, the Shinji-ike Pond and the three arched bridges spanning it form an iconic view. The pond is named for its resemblance to the character for "heart," and the three bridges symbolize the past, present, and future, respectively. Several stone statues of reclining sacred oxen are scattered throughout the grounds, reflecting the traditional connection between the ox and Sugawara no Michizane. The Tobiume (Flying Plum Tree) beside the main hall carries the legend of a plum tree that flew here from Kyoto in a single night. It is the first to bloom each year, adding vitality to the spring. The garden is planted with approx. 200 varieties and 6,000 plum trees, creating a particularly rich landscape during the blooming season, and you can also enjoy irises in early summer. Traditional festivals and cultural events are also preserved here. The Usokae ritual held every January involves exchanging wooden bird carvings to express wishes, and the Kyokusui no En (Winding Stream Banquet) is held on the first Sunday of March, where participants dressed in Heian-period attire recite poems by the flowing water, recreating the elegance of ancient banquets. After your visit, you can stroll along the approach and taste Umegae Mochi, a grilled rice cake with a crispy exterior and red bean filling, to experience the local traditional food culture.Dazaifu · 41.6km from Yanagawa

The Saga City History and Folklore Museum is located in Yanagimachi, Saga City, Saga Prefecture. It is the general name of the ancient buildings with precious historical value in Saga City. The old Koga Bank with the Western-style architecture of the Taisho period is preserved here, the mansion of the president of the Old Koga Bank, the representative Japanese-style building of the Meiji period, the old Koga house, and the very old machiya in the old castle town of Saga, which was relocated and restored. There are 7 old mansions in total, including the Ushishima House, the former Sansho Bank, which retains the legacy of a bank in the early Meiji period, and the former Fukuda House, which fully retains the modern Japanese architectural style of the Taisho period. There is also a garden in the museum, and more and more people come here every year. In addition, you can also experience traditional hand-woven Saga brocade at the former Fukuda house. In addition to the historical value of the building itself, the building also welcomed many older guests this time. It is planned to display ancient clocks in the old Koga Bank; in the old Ushishima home, people will be brought back to the life scene of the Showa era, and many old home appliances and furniture will be displayed. A foot organ, a washing board, a charcoal iron, an old-fashioned tape recorder, newspapers of the time, etc., the smell of old life often awakens a distant sense of intimacy in the heart, and it is also a good opportunity to learn about Japanese culture.Saga City · 13.7km from Yanagawa

There are not many places to visit in Saga, but Saga Castle is worth a visit. In the evening, the setting sun falls on the Saga Castle History Museum like molten gold, giving this ancient city a soft and mysterious golden coat. Stepping lightly, stepping into this land treated gently by time, it seems as if you have traveled through the tunnel of time and space and returned to that turbulent era. Saga Castle, whose history can be traced back to the early Edo period, was once the location of the Saga Domain Office. However, after many wars and fires, Saga Castle has been damaged several times. Especially in the Saga Rebellion in the early Meiji era, most of the buildings in the city were burned down, and only the city walls and gates were preserved. The Saga Castle History Museum we see today was built on the basis of the reconstruction by the then domain lord Nabeshima Naomasa in 1838, and has been maintained and restored. The History Museum stands quietly under the city wall. Without the hustle and bustle of the day, it is more solemn and quiet at this moment. The city wall, the mottled stones, every brick and tile are engraved with the stories of the past. They have witnessed the changes of countless dynasties and the baptism of wind and rain, but they still stand tall, guarding the memory and glory of this land. Walking along the city wall, you can still vaguely hear the echo of history Walking into the history museum, the lights are soft and the atmosphere is warm. With more than 700 tatami mats, it is one of the largest wooden restoration buildings in Japan. The museum displays a variety of exhibits, from ancient weapons to exquisite works of art, from documentary records to daily utensils, each of which carries the weight of history and tells the past and present of Saga Castle. In particular, those historical materials related to the late shogunate and the Meiji Restoration period, through materials, images and models, present the history of this period in many ways, making people feel as if they are in that turbulent era.

[Scenery] Recommended Aomori attractions to visit in summer [Fun] Visit the Prefectural Museum of Art in early July. The weather is cool and the scenery is lush. You can take the shuttle bus from Aomori Station. The shuttle bus time is subject to the time (it was changed on the day of the visit due to sports competitions). Please note that you cannot take photos in the Nara Michiho-hei area. You can only take photos of Aomori dogs. In addition to the above exhibitions, there are also irregular art exhibitions. It is worth spending an afternoon to visit.

This shrine is associated with the Nabeshima clan, lords of the Saga domain, and I visited to see the restored Armstrong gun. The significant role Saga played in Japan's modern history is conveyed quietly yet powerfully here. The grounds are spacious and well-maintained, and the magnificent sacred tree and shrine building are well worth seeing. It's not as flashy as a tourist destination, but it's a place where you can feel the weight and pride of history. If you visit the nearby Saga Castle ruins and history museum as well, you can gain a deeper understanding of Saga's greatness. Seeing the real thing is impressive, and you can really see the advanced technological capabilities that the Saga domain used to support Japan's modernization. The quiet grounds allowed me to really feel the weight of history.

One of my favorite parks placed in the city, Ohorikoen is quite massive, making it a good place for picnics, anytime strolls, jogging, and also has some swan boats for a fun ride in the lake during daytime. If you want to chill for a coffee there is Starbucks.
