Railcards are also an excellent way to save money on train travel if you meet the criteria for one. Many people know about the 16–25 Railcard (which used to be called the "Young Person's Railcard") and the Senior Railcard, but there are some less well-known types. The 26–30 Railcard is available to those within that age group, and the Two Together Railcard allows two people travelling together on off-peak trains to access the standard discount of a third off their fares. (You have to travel all the way together, though - otherwise your ticket won't be valid!)
It's worth noting that discounts are only on off-peak trains leaving Waterloo after 09:30.

What is there to do in Farnborough?
Though it doesn't qualify as a particularly big town, Farnborough still has plenty of interesting bits of history - here are a couple of things you might like to do while you're there.
Farnborough is a town that is inexorably linked to the military, thanks to the fact that it has the oldest active airfield in the country and is located right next to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
Farnborough Air Sciences Trust Museum aims to keep alive the aeronautical history of the town and specifically the work of the Royal Aircraft Establishment - the engineers and inventors who researched military flight. The museum is staffed solely by a team of volunteers and has a constantly changing display of items drawn from its vast archives. There is even a jet engine designed by Sir Frank Whittle!
Also of interest in Farnborough is St Michael's Abbey, which is a working Benedictine monastery. The abbey is the resting place of Napoleon III - the first president, second emperor and final monarch of France, as well as the nephew of the (perhaps more famous) Napoleon Bonaparte. Exile from France brought him to Britain, where he died in 1873. His wife built the abbey to be a fitting resting place, and the family's granite sarcophagi were gifts from Queen Victoria. There is a guided tour held every Saturday at 3 pm.
The abbey lies just a short distance away from the train station, so making a return journey to London should be straightforward.
