Coming from the dry warmth of Doha, the endless, vibrant green of Nova Scotia is still a pleasant surprise to my eyes. Annapolis Royal was one of the two historic spots I absolutely had to see on this trip, and it did not disappoint.

As an art teacher, I was instantly drawn to the star-shaped earthworks of Fort Anne. What used to be a heavy military defense now looks like a giant, minimalist land-art installation. The way the soft green turf rises and falls in perfect geometric lines against the blue of the Annapolis Basin is incredibly satisfying to look at.

While walking along the grassy ridges, I noticed a tiny detail that stayed with me: a small yellow wildflower growing right in the shadow of one of those heavy, black iron cannons. It felt like a quiet victory of life over old iron. I also had a lovely, brief chat with a local lady who was sitting on a bench knitting. She noticed me sketching the outline of the old Officer's Quarters and warmly told me that the building looks best just as the sun starts to dip, when the shadows of the three tall chimneys stretch across the grass. She was right.

I spent my last hour near the Acadian monument, watching the water. It’s hard to imagine that this peaceful basin was once the stage for so much conflict and displacement. Today, the only sound was the wind and a couple of crows arguing over something in the grass.

My hands got a bit cold from the sea breeze by the end, but the absolute stillness of the place was worth it. A perfect, quiet afternoon of history and form.
