🪨 Old Harry Rocks

Old Harry Rocks has a fascinating history that goes back millions of years.

The white chalk that makes up Old Harry Rocks was deposited roughly 66–145 million years ago, during the Cretaceous Period, when this part of Britain was covered by a warm, shallow sea. Tiny marine organisms accumulated on the seabed, eventually forming thick layers of chalk.

Over millions of years, tectonic activity, waves, wind and erosion shaped the coastline. The softer sections of the chalk were gradually eroded, creating caves, arches and isolated sea stacks.

🌊 How did Old Harry become a sea stack?

The coastline originally had larger connected chalk formations. Waves attacked weaknesses in the cliffs, gradually forming caves → arches → isolated pillars. Eventually, parts of the arches collapsed, leaving the distinctive stacks we see today.

🌊 Old Harry Rocks, England 🇬🇧

Old Harry Rocks is one of the most iconic coastal landscapes in southern England, located near Studland Bay and Swanage in Dorset. It forms part of the spectacular Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

🏔️ What makes it special?
The site features dramatic white chalk cliffs, sea stacks, arches and rugged coastline rising from the English Channel. The contrast between the bright chalk rocks, deep blue sea and green countryside makes the scenery particularly beautiful.

🌿 Best time to visit: Late spring through early autumn is generally pleasant for coastal walks. Early morning or late afternoon is particularly beautiful and often quieter.
