Could you believe that… on our planet, there’s a mountain with a giant, table-like top, towering above a sea of clouds, and home to strange creatures found only in this area! 😱🌍

This is Mount Roraima, located on the border between Venezuela, Brazil, and Guyana in South America.

This mountain is one of the most distinctive table-top mountains in the world, and its scenery looks like something out of a fantasy movie!

🏔️ Why does the mountain have a table-like top?

The secret lies in incredibly long-lasting geological processes!

Mount Roraima is a tepui, a type of flat-topped mountain with steep cliffs.

The rock that makes up the mountain is mostly ancient sandstone from the Roraima Group, dating back billions of years.

Over time, wind, rain, and erosion processes gradually eroded the surrounding area, leaving behind the tall mountain with a flat top and steep cliffs we see today.

☁️ So why does the summit seem to float above the clouds?

Because Mount Roraima is approximately 2,810 meters above sea level.

The humidity and topography cause frequent clouds and fog in the area.

When clouds cover the area below, but the summit still emerges from the fog, the entire mountain looks like a giant floating island!

🌿 But the most amazing thing is…the natural world at the summit is completely different from the area below!

Mount Roraima has a unique ecosystem, with cooler temperatures, sandstone formations, and soil that is relatively nutrient-poor.

Many species of organisms have adapted to survive in this environment.

🌱 Some carnivorous plants use insects as an additional source of nutrients.

🌸 Many endemic plant species have evolved to suit the high altitude.

🐸 Some small frog species inhabit the ecosystem of Mount Tepui.

The isolation of the summit makes this area a very important site for studying biodiversity!

😲 Did you know that… this mountain is connected to the inspiration for the novel *The Lost World*?

Mount Roraima and the plateau-topped mountains in this region are often linked to the inspiration for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous novel *The Lost World*, published in 1912.

The novel tells the story of an exploration of a mysterious highland inhabited by ancient creatures.

While there is no evidence of dinosaurs remaining on the mountaintop, Roraima's bizarre landscape easily evokes images of a prehistoric world! 🦕

The summit features strangely shaped rocks, clear pools, canyons, and naturally occurring quartz crystals.
