The Oikawa Railway in Shizuoka-Shimada City is definitely an obscure but very distinctive parent-child journey option! If you’re a Thomas Locomotive fan like me, or have kids who love trains, you can’t miss it! Located between Shinkanaya Station and Kayama Station, there are rich mountain scenery along the way, and you will also encounter the classic Thomas red locomotive, perfect for photography and family fun.

Recommended fun routes:
The tour can be arranged for a full-day one-way route. You can first head to Shinkanaya Station (Address: 2-1112-2 Kanayaazuma, Shimada, Shizuoka Prefecture), one of the main stations on the Oikawa Railway and the surroundings are full of retro town vibe. It is advisable to check the train schedule in advance, as Thomas trains have limited daily services.

After departing from Shinkanaya Station, take the Oikawa Railway through the lush green valley, outside the car window you will see layers of woods, rivers, and natural scenery. Even on a cloudy and rainy departure, the clouds outside the window and the rich green mountain scenery were very cinematic. After arriving at Kayama Station, you can take a short break near the station to take a few photos of the train and rural scenery before taking the return train back to Shinkanaya Station.

Must-play items and photo spots:
· Be sure to take a picture with Thomas Locomotive.
· The towns and station buildings along the way are very nostalgic.
· Several mountain and forest views along the train route

Game Tips:
1. Thomas trains generally only run during specific seasons or weekends, it’s best to check the schedule on the official website in advance.
2. When taking the train it is recommended to wait a little earlier, you can choose a good location for easy check-in.
3. There is also a train maintenance station in New Golden Valley, where you can see different trains coming in and out if you are lucky
4. There is a souvenir shop near Shinkanaya Station
5. The Thomas train will be parked at the Home Hill Terminal, so you can go directly to the photo frame

Notes:
· Certain shifts do not always have Thomas train styling, confirm running information before departure.
· Some railways will cross mountainous areas, remember to bring the equipment you need.
· The trip belongs to the nearby suburbs half day or full day trip
