This Mayan site is the only Mayan monument by the sea and the last city-state in Mayan culture. Why can it stand? This is related to the topography of Tulum, which is protected by solid city walls on three sides and by the sea on the other side. The coastline is protected by natural reefs to resist foreign invasion.
