A huge wasabi statue is riding in a barrel!
Original Text
Next to the entrance on the south side of Sunpu Castle Park, there was a monument to the birthplace of wasabi pickled. It's a statue that you don't know what it looks like at first glance, but a huge wasabi statue is riding in a barrel. According to the inscription on the lower side of the statue, wasabi cultivation began about 370 years ago in the upper reaches of the Abe River, and wasabi merchants devised "wasabi pickled" about 200 years ago.
I saw it while walking along the moat of Sunpu Castle. At first, I thought it was a caterpillar, but it was the shape of a wasabi root, the raw material for pickled wasabi.
It is a stone object in the inner moat of Sunpu Castle. It's a place I've been to many times, but I didn't really care about it. It is not recommended for sightseeing purposes.
Wasabi cultivation is done in the mountains. It is a place blessed with cool air and clean water even in remote summer. Shizuoka, Yamanashi, Nagano, etc. are popular. This is the place where wasabi pickled by merchants originated. The monument is placed near Sunpu Castle moat and the prefectural office. It looks like a caterpillar even if you look closely, but it is in the shape of a leafy wasabi.
It is located at the moat edge of the entrance to the prefectural office side of Sunpu Castle Park. A memorial of wasabi stems. You notice it as wasabi.
