Hongcun Village is situated in the northeastern part of Yi County, Huangshan City, Anhui Province. It is an ancient town hidden in the 'Peach Blossom Shangri-la', covering an area of 19.17 hectares (about 300 acres). It was established during the Shaoxing period of the Southern Song Dynasty (AD 1131) and has a history of over 870 years.
Hongcun is famous for its highly representative Hui-style architecture, with its towering horse-head walls, clear lake waters, and arching bridges resembling rainbows, which have become etched in many people's hearts like a painting. From the outside, Hongcun appears as a unique ox-shaped ancient village nestled in the ancient Peach Blossom Shangri-la, backed by the remnants of Mount Huangshan such as Yangzhan Ridge and Leigang Mountain. The terrain is relatively high, sometimes shrouded in mist and clouds like a heavy ink painting, and sometimes like an ink wash painting. The surrounding mountains, white walls, and blue tiles are reflected in the lake, unfolding like a landscape painting scroll.
Hongcun enjoys the reputation of 'a village in a Chinese painting', attracting numerous enthusiasts of sketching, photography, and film and television works. Especially, the entire village's 'ox' structure layout is hailed as a great wonder of the world's historical and cultural heritage. The towering and verdant Leigang serves as the ox head, the towering ancient trees as the horns, and the residential buildings from east to west resemble the large body of an ox. A stream is channeled from the northwest of the village, winding through houses, forming a nine-curved water channel that gathers the natural spring water in the village into a crescent-shaped pond, resembling the ox's intestines and stomach. The water channel eventually flows into the lake to the south of the village, commonly known as the ox's belly. Subsequently, four bridges were built over the village stream, serving as the ox's legs.
There are hundreds of ancient residential buildings in the village, closely packed together. Among them, 'Chengzhi Hall' is the most perfectly preserved ancient residence in Yi County. Its main hall's crossbeams, brackets, carved doors, and window lattices feature fine craftsmanship, complex layers, and numerous figures, each with a different face and expression, making it a masterpiece of wood carving in the Hui-style 'four carvings' art.
The Moon Pond in Hongcun, known to the locals as the Moon Pond, is the so-called 'ox's small stomach'. Most of the classic images of Hongcun are taken here, with the early morning being the best time.

Who said that there is no snow in Jiangnan, do not believe you to Hongcun to see Anhui Hongcun, known as the painter's paper ink, Jiangnan poets wrote the painting of the countryside. The bridge on the south lake is famous for an Oscar-winning film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but more people know it because it has the reputation of the countryside in Chinese paintings. A representative Huizhou architecture, a high horse head wall, clear lake, arch bridge like rainbow, like a painting into many people's hearts.
Blue sky and white clouds, breeze blowing, exquisite carved wood, are worth seeing. I really suggest to give an explanation, understand that different patterns of wood carving have different meanings, there are similarities between the house and the house, but its history is different, to understand the wisdom of the ancients
Hongcun, located in Jixian County, Huangshan City, Anhui Province, is a village full of ancient charm, known as "the village in the painting". Here, you can feel the beautiful scenery of traditional Chinese countryside and appreciate the vastness of ancient Huizhou culture.
Hongcun is indeed worth a visit. The scenery is beautiful and the buildings are simple. Especially living in it. It will feel very quiet at night. If you don't consciously sleep early and get up early, you will wake up naturally at six o'clock. It is not too pleasant to serve a night of porridge and small pickles in the morning. The local restaurant inside tastes good, the price is moderate, and the snacks are also delicious. I like Gegenyu, Baihuayu, Hairy Tofu, and Shiqi Cake ~
