Fleshing it Out: embodied practices and socio-political impact | University of the Arts London
Oct 10, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
London
How does practice-based research with a focus on body-based knowledges and insights help to concretise the felt experience of socio-political themes such as commoning, power, and relationality? How can we use embodied, experiential techniques to better articulate how we relate to ourselves, to each other and to systems of power? Can practice-based research help us to do differently, not just say differently? A one day symposium hosting practical labs on a variety of embodied practice-research approaches. With an interdisciplinary focus and an inclusive approach, we have invited practitioners working across dance and psychology, sound and computing, design, and theatre. We will aim to reflect our enquiry in the structure and holding of the day, as well as in the themes brought by invited artists and scholars. Please come prepared to experiment, participate, and co-create the day with us. The title of the event is a play on the word 'in-carn-ate' - literally, to make flesh. We are, in a sense, engaged in the messy process of fleshing out the potential insights of embodied practice-research for socio-political issues. Location:

Artist tour | Douglas Abdell: Intervalism and Other Mathematics | Ab-Anbar Gallery
Oct 12, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
London
Ab-Anbar is pleased to present “Douglas Abdell: Intervalism and Other Mathematics” by the prolific Málaga-based artist. The exhibition’s focus is two decades of sculpture, painting, and drawing from the late 60s - 80s, dominated not only by the systematic deconstruction and reconstruction of language, but also Abdell’s fascination with its tradition and evolution, deeply entangled with his Mediterranean roots and a reimagining of its ancient languages.
Most of the exhibited works emerge from Abdell’s ‘Intervalist’ philosophy, a concept he articulated in his 1984 manifesto ‘Mirror Magnetik Interval’. This esoteric graphical magazine dissects the structure of numbers, letters, and the artist’s own alphabets – which draw heavy inspiration from the symbols of ancient phoenician and etruscan – to conceive of an internal structure, or a unified conception of things. The exhibition’s acrylic paintings and sculptures of bronze and welded-steel feature the same forms as throughout the manifesto, but also have threads that can be traced throughout Abdell’s preceding practice. As the artist states, “all of my work contains elements of its history and projections in its future,” whether that be the references to the ancient Mediterranean or his intensive and obsessive sculptural study; documents of which can be found saturating the walls of the exhibition’s underbelly downstairs, alongside new sculptures and drawings.
Contextualising the Intervalist works are inclusions from his ‘Kryad’ sculptural series and ‘Phoenaes’ paintings amongst others, dealing with phonetic games and translations of phoneme into material, or vice-versa. Present, too, throughout the exhibition are traces of the heady period of cultural upheaval in New York in the 70s where Abdell made his work and rose to prominence, as well as the politics of the Middle East and the Mediterranean: namely his own ‘Fourth Punic war’, a cultural and linguistic war in which Rome becomes a metaphor for centralisation and imperialism.
Ultimately, this exhibition demonstrates Abdell’s lifelong commitment to exploring the bond between language, form, and cultural intersections, presenting a prolific practice that reflects on the interconnectivity of all things to emerge with an artistic language instantly recognisable as his own.

Roundtable Discussion | SOAS Alumni Lecture Theatre (SALT), Paul Webley Wing, SOAS
Oct 12, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
London
This round table discussion, which takes place in association with the SOAS Gallery exhibition ‘Strange Wonders - Dreams, Desire and Daoism: Jizi and Other Pioneers of Contemporary Ink Painting from China’, will explore the relationship between Daoism and ink painting in contemporary China. Since the compilation of its founding text, the Daodejing in the 4th century BCE, Daoism has provided an intellectual focus for resistance to state and other forms of social control as well as the calming achievement of neixin (heart - innermost being) in the face of worldly conflicts and suffering. Examples of these include the classic Daoist text the Zhuangzi (c. 3rd century BCE), wherein the principle of wu-wei (effortless action) is upheld as a corrective to overly legalistic imperial authority, and the so-called Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove, who in the 3rd century CE resiled from public service at a time of major political upheaval in China to engage in the contemplation of Daoist teachings and related cultural activities, including painting, poetry writing, calligraphy and music-making, sometimes under the boundary blurring influence of alcoholic intoxication. The roundtable will discuss the continuing relationship between Daoism and Chinese ink painting and its implications for cultural resistances to authority, individualism, transcendent spiritualty, care for the self and respect for nature in an authoritarian-materialist post-revolutionary China now officially aligned, under the presidency of Xi Jinping, with Confucian-related aspirations toward social harmony. Also discussed will be the situating of contemporary Chinese ink art as part of the now conspicuously pluriversal conditions of early 21st–century contemporaneity downstream of post-Cold War globalization. The extent to which the relationship between Daoism and ink painting can indeed be talked or written about will be addressed given Daoism’s ultimate recourse to ineffable feeling rather than cognition as a way of gaining insight into the ontology of the cosmos. Participants in the roundtable include its moderator Prof. Paul Gladston, the UNSW Judith Neilson Chair of Contemporary Art, Dr. Katie Hill of Sotheby's Institute of Art, London and the curator of ‘Strange Wonders - Dreams, Desire and Daoism - Jizi and Other Pioneers of Contemporary Ink Painting from China’, and Prof. Wang Chunchen of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing who is the son of the artist Jizi, also known as Wang Yunshan . An opening presentation by the moderator and discussion among the participants will be followed by an audience Q&A. Venue SOAS Alumni Lecture Theatre (SALT), 1st Floor, SOAS Senate House North Block, Malet Street, London WC1H OXG
