The Hummingbird Project's 10th Anniversary Celebration | Brighthelm Centre
Aug 30, 2025 (UTC+1)
Brighton and Hove
Join us for
The Hummingbird Project's 10th Anniversary Celebration!
The event will take place at the
Brighthelm Centre
and the programme will include live music performances, poetry, a fundraising auction, and reflections from people who have been a part of our journey. The full line-up will be announced in the coming weeks on our Instagram.
The Hummingbird Project began as a volunteer-led project supporting displaced people in the Calais 'Jungle', a refugee camp in France, before moving our services to Brighton following the refugee camp in 2016. Now, we support over 300 young people each year through our weekly youth group, Global Social Club, Young Women's Group, Young Leaders programme, 1:1 advocacy and casework support, and our recent clinical psychologist service, Side by Side, in partnership with the Helen Bamber Foundation.
As we navigate a time of financial difficulty, we have been overwhelmed by the support of our community. The ticket proceeds and money raised on the day will support us to continue our work going forwards.
We look forward to spending the day celebrating with you! Whether you have been a part of Hummingbird since the beginning or you're a new face wanting to learn about the ogranisation, all are welcome. We welcome you to share music, memories, and chai with us for a day of community and celebration.
There are three ticket prices available. Please choose the one which best reflects your cicrumstances. If finances are a barrier to you attending, please do get in touch and we can offer a concession price.
This will be a youth-friendly and alcohol-free event.
Please do share our fundraising campaign on your social media. Linked below.

Tapping Together | The Barn at Westdene
Sep 7, 2025 (UTC+1)
Brighton and Hove
What is EFT?
An open circle to explore EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique aka tapping) together in a safe, non-judgemental and supportive way.
EFT is a somatic and cognative release tool which focusses on the links between body and mind, helping to work through troublesome emotions and even help you understand and work with trauma (the latter in a 1:1 space rather than a circle).
It helps to regulate your nervous system so that you feel more calm, in control of your emotions, and understand yourself on a deeper level. The pieces of the puzzle come together.
What to expect
A welcoming sharing circle
Time for journaling so you can get some head space
A beautiful guided meditation
Movement exercises to encourage landing in the body
Tapping (of course!)
***Please bring a notepad, pen and water bottle
Who is it for?
Everyone. In my opinion EFT should be taught at school because it’s the safest and easiest tool to use with or without a practitioner.
Since it helps you understand and regulate your emotions and nervous system, I believe it is The Essential Tool every human should have in their pocket
Why should I come?
You’re curious about how it could help you.
The idea of a sense of belonging in a group appeals to you
There’s something you’d like to let go of
There’s something you’d like to welcome IN to your life
You want to explore your mind and feel more in control of your emotions
Why work with Jess
I am an intuitive energy-led practitioner that helps and guides others to heal themselves. I’ve been certified as a coach and NLP Master Practitioner since 2018 and I also use the healing modalities of reiki and sound to offer a truly unique mix of tools, tailored for my clients needs.
I have used EFT for many years; when I used to struggle with sleep and anxiety, it was a close friend. Then I decided to get qualified in EFT early 2024 as I wanted to be able to use in my coaching sessions with clients.
In July 2024, I suddenly found myself in hospital with sepsis; as I prepared for emergency surgery, it was EFT I turned to in the terror of staring death in the face.
You are not defined by the hand you are dealt, but by how you deal with it. Tapping and coaching can help you to self-resource the answers to your perceived problems.
If you have any questions please email me on hello@jessnicks.com or drop a line on instagram @jessnickscoaching for a voice note reply.

Kid's Watercolour @ Florence Road Farmers Market | One Church Brighton
Sep 13, 2025 (UTC+0)
Brighton and Hove
no workshop 19th Oct due to illness Where are we: 🌧️ When it's raining we are in the back of the Church. When you come in the main entrance, got straight forward and then go through the door to the right of the stage. We're in the blue room! ☀️ If it's sunny and the market stalls are outside - we'll be inside the main hall of the church at the back corner --------- What we do: Each week we have a new theme, we'll always be using watercolour & collage in some way. The colours we use are really bright and amazing - not those cheap dissapointing watercolours. Once you have paid in person, or bought a ticket on eventbrite, your child can stay at the table for however long they want & make as many things they want to (although I try to encourge them to finish each one before making 100! How to turn up: You can either book on Eventbrite, or turn up on the day and pay by cash or card. Turn up any time - early is less busy If the table is full when you turn up, you may just need to wait a little while before a space becomes free - which is why coming earlier is better! While you wait you can grab a coffee from the cafe, and there's a little play area for the kids next to the art table that they can be entertained with for a while. What ages can take part? Children under 4 need an adult to help them out. Who runs the workshop? Hi I'm Zara - I run multiple watercolour workshops every week in Waterstones on Northstreet and other venues around Brighton and East Sussex. Running workshops for children is a new venture for me and I've really enjoyed it so far! In the past I have volunteered with charities working with young children and I have previously worked in a secondary school with teens. In all of my workshops the participants get to learn something as well as experiment, which in itself is really improtant for learning - and most importantly having fun! REFUNDS: Unfortunately eventbrite takes a cut of the ticket event if the ticket is refunded. Which means I would be losing money meaning I'm unable to offer a full refund. So there is a choice between these things: 1) I can transfer your ticket to a different week of your choice 2) I can refund you but it will be a few quid and pence less! Refunds and transfers must be requested at least 12 hours before the event starts. WHAT'S ON
Find out what workshops are on via my live calendar on my website!

An Evening With Alan Hollinghurst - Waterstones Brighton | Waterstones
Sep 16, 2025 (UTC+1)
Brighton and Hove
We're absolutely delighted to be welcoming Alan Hollinghurst back to Watererstones Brighton, this time for the paperback release of his 7th novel, the astonishing 'Our Evenings'.
2004 Booker winner Alan Hollinghurst is coming to Waterstones Brighton to discuss his latest novel, 'Our Evenings' - the poignant, funny, powerful and expansive 7th novel from the writer described by many as one of the greats of our age.
'Our Evenings' is an account of the life of protagonist Dave Win, as a schoolboy and student, his first love affairs, in London, and on the road with an experimental theatre company, and of a late-life affair, which transforms his sixties with a new sense of happiness and a perilous security; but it is also, very movingly, the story of his hard-working widowed mother, whose own life takes an unexpected new turn after her son leaves home.
It is also a story of race, class, sexuality, love and violence, from a master novelist still at the very peak of his talents.
We are so very lucky to have him coming back to Brighton and hope that many of you will be joining us for what will be a very special evening.
Please note: book & ticket price includes a paperback copy of 'Our Evenings' (rrp £9.99) available for collection on the night.
Please be in touch on

Paint your own Large Abstract Painting workshop in Brighton | Lawrence Art Studio
Oct 26, 2025 (UTC+0)
Brighton
This isn’t a typical painting adult art class in Brighton. This isn’t a “paint by numbers” class or “copy how I paint” approach. In this workshop we will do things differently: The main tool we will be using is not the brush. It’s our mind - free from limitations. We will paint intuitively! Spontaneously to the music, allowing the paint to evolve and reveal itself freely into an explosion of colours, patterns, marks, shapes, texture on the canvas. We will paint big! Big brush movements, a bold colour pallet and even the fingers. The intention is to let go of any expectations. We will get messy! This is not about making pretty things. It’s rare opportunity to let go of perfectionism and experiment with a wide range of art materials (acrylic, watercolours, pastels, chalk etc) to free our inner artist and find our creative voice in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We will get creative! Art has no limitations, we use every day tools: window squeegee, credit card, bubble wrap, fork, scraper, feather, chopstick, ANYTHING to get our imagination going! Suddenly the concept of “painting” expands! It’s a painting wonderland full of possibilities. We will free ourselves from limiting beliefs! This dynamic and creative free-flow painting style will move us through past fears, creative blocks and self-doubt into joy and freedom! We will express ourselves! By opening our mind and listening to our heart, we can express our soul without boundaries or judgments. While experimenting with painting, we will build a relationship with who we are, reconnect to our inner child and fully express ourselves including the wisdom that is forever inside us. There is such freedom and joy in this! Who is this class for? This is a safe space for anyone! Even those who think they aren’t creative or can’t paint or draw. Also, this is a great opportunity for creative types who haven’t picked up a paintbrush in a while but are longing to express themselves through art. We can play and feel like a kid again without worrying about the end result. Nobody will judge what we create together. We are all on a journey to find our inner artist. The people who come to this class are from all walks of life: freelancers, entrepreneurs, website designers, yoga teachers, success coaches, parents….whatever! This could be fun and creative way to celebrate your birthday, anniversary or any other occasion (corporate team building) in Brighton, perfect Xmas gift too. What to expect on the day? Through fun, guided group and individual exercises we’ll explore wide range of art materials, experiment with an unconventional tools and try many abstract painting techniques including layering, mark making, texture.
