The White Swan Hotel

The White Swan Hotel

📍 31-32 Market Square, Duns
★★★ 8.0 (40 reviews)

"I'm staying for 2 nights again. Working at Farne Salmon n Trout factory. The hotel is a bit tired, but decorators are in just now smartening up the place. Stayed here for 2 nights, 2 weeks ago. Back for 2 nights again. Room needs gutted, especially the bathroom. This seems to be in hand as new owners, I believe. Staff are amazing. Girls behind the bar are superb. Breakfast girl is just 1st class. Had a dinner 2 weeks ago. Hot food on a cold plate. Sorry, but that's just not on. Told Jan on my 1st visit. 2nd visit, same again. Food is cooked so well. In fact, the food is bloody brilliant. Such a shame my complaint has fallen on deaf ears. PUT HOT FOOD ON A COLD PLATE. THE HOT FOOD TRIES SO HARD TO HEAT UP THE PLATE THAT ITS ON, THAT IT'S COLD IN 10/15 MINS. A CHEF REALLY NEEDS TO KNOW THAT. VERY DISAPPOINTING. Great bar. Sky sports. Great staff. So friendly. Please get the simplest of things right. The breakfast girl did this morning. Heat the plate up before putting food on it. It's just so easy. My only moan about here. My friend Gordon R would be horrified. I've secured a good contract at Farne up the road. I'm off to the chippy tonight cos they don't have cold plates. Please take heed of this review. It's so easily dealt with. I will be back. Cheers. Cookie."

The White Swan Hotel ★★★
"Stayed at the White Swan recently for 4 nights. We were in a group of 5. We had a great stay here using the hotel as a base. Breakfast was fantastic with a great choice. We also ate here in the evening and the food was excellent, each evening had specials on the menu, Sunday was our favourite with turkey and all the trimmings. Rooms were perfect for what we required and the beds were very comfortable. The staff made this stay with each and every one pleasant to speak to and service was exceptional. If we are back in the area next year we wont look anywhere else for accommodation."

Allanton Inn ★★★
"We had dinner here last night (26.6.26) in this lovely Inn. We had seafood salad and pressed ham hock for starters and we both had haddock and chips for mains. The food was beautifully presented and delicious with great service. We loved that local producers were supported throughout the menu. There is also a great beer garden out the back. We will definitely return and recommend."

Chirnside Hall Hotel ★★★★
"Built in 1863 as a holiday retreat for a local entrepreneur, Chirnside Hall has survived all that has afflicted the Scottish Borders since - the weather, political upheavals and economic constraints. Since 2000, the development into a fine boutique hotel and seasonal hunting lodge has been the passion of Dutchman, Christian Korsten and his team. If you are looking for a cosy, comfortable and personal venue, then you should be more than pleased. The welcoming smiles are genuine, as is the determination to deliver an up-market experience. The décor is a stylish meld of antique and Harris Tweed modern, with proper linen napkins at table. As for food, the dinner menu changes daily, with meals that would earn gold stars at other establishments; a 'Full Scottish' is a real breakfast challenge; and the picnic lunch option a delight. Not only did Kirsty the chef demonstrate a thorough understanding of my coeliac limitations, she provided special gluten-free treats for me that were the envy of my friends (thank you Kirsty). For our elderly Border Terrier, he found the stairs to the top floor an effort, and some times needed carrying. So if you are planning to visit with a four-legged family member, this may be a consideration. Yet, there was even attention to detail for him, with a crate in the room, bowls and dog treats. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable trip, which we recommend whole-heartedly. "

The Wheatsheaf Hotel and Restaurant ★★★★
"A couple of nights. Our favourite was the first when we got to eat in the bar rather than the restaurant. The room was good. Perhaps a bit dated (who uses a DVD player?). The bed linen was frayed and one of the blind toggles was missing but the bed was comfortable and the shower nice. All very clean. The meals were good enough and we'd be happy enough to eat (and stay) here again. Filling pub food. The hotel's location was good too for exploring this end of the Borders"

Green Hope Guest House ★★★
"We spent a lovely weekend at GreenHope and had a really great weekend. Alison and Bill were so hospitable and kind and the accommodation was top class. A lovely little semi detached bungalow with a full working kitchen with all mod cons, a sitting room and bedroom with en suite shower and toilet. It was immaculate and spotless and the surroundings were like something from a movie. Patio doors from the sitting room leading out to a patio had the most spectacular view looking onto a flowing river between two rolling glens. Absolutely breathtaking. Alison allowed us to park our car right next to the bungalow too so it was super convenient. The peace and tranquility was priceless and just what we needed after having a hectic Christmas and New Year period. We booked again for 6 weeks time as seeing the area in Spring will be spectacular. If you like stargazing then this is the place too. One clear evening gave us the most dazzling curtain of stars and I imagine in Spring the milky way could be spotted. Duns is only a 15 minute drive if you need supplies or want to go for lunch or dinner which we did and enjoyed it to no end. Its great value for money and at only an hour away from Edinburgh you can enjoy the most peaceful and resting retreat imaginable. Whether youre from Scotland or further afield Green Hope is a must for those looking for a quiet break away from city life."
