The Cottage Hotel

This hotel is great. We had a friendly welcome and Millie helped us to our room with our luggage. The room had a fantastic view of the sea, the beach was a few minutes walk away, the 5-course dinner and also the breakfast were delicious (and part of the package). In particular, every member of staff was very friendly and efficient. It exceeded all expectations.

This is a hotel trying, but failing to make it into the 21st century. The majority of guests are well passed retirement age and so probably don’t mind that , even though the bedrooms are modern, a lot of the furniture in the public spaces, and certainly the carpets, are as old as they are. Some areas, especially the reception and balconies are in need of some serious refurbishment. The menu might be recognised by a diner in 1960 and certainly couldn’t be accused of pretentiousness ( e.g. fanned melon, then leg of lamb with cabbage, carrots and boiled potatoes) but food was nevertheless tasty and the portions were very generous, as was the after dinner coffee - a whole cafetière rather than two miserable little cups. The saving grace for this hotel are the staff who, from the manager down, were unfailingly friendly, helpful and efficient. The prices are at the luxury level end of the scale. There’s not a lot of luxury, but the place is pleasantly old-fashioned and its situation, overlooking Hope Cove would be difficult to beat.

We four returned again to the Cottage Hotel for a 5 day break. The staff helped with our luggage and we were soon looking out on our balcony at the beautiful view. Our room was large with a huge bed and lots of storage Breakfast was great with a wide choice and the dinner menu changed each day also with a wide selection of good food cooked well. The chef catered for my wife's dinner requests on each occasion, thanks. Apart from the hotel's wonderful location overlooking the harbour it is the staff who make the hotel special. We have already booked for next year.

The staff are courteous, helpful & efficient. The food is excellent & the rooms comfortable, well equipped & immaculately clean. The views from the restaurant, terrace & bar are quite wonderful & a joy to look at whatever the weather. I have visited over many years & the high standards are consistent. Can't wait for the next trip!

We stayed for 2 nights with breakfast and a wonderful 5 course meal included. Thankyou Sarah and William for making my grandads 90th birthday so special and memorable. We had lunch in the lounge with a stunning view. The staff were all super helpful and the cake was bought out with them singing happy birthday. Nothing was too much trouble, the room was excellent, the choice on the menus were varied. Thankyou for everything you have done. Sarah, your mai tai cocktail was delicious!!

The Sunday lunch was outstanding, freshly prepared, tasted absolutely delicious with great staff. As always we started with a lovely refreshing drink in the well stocked bar with great service from Paul and Steve who was always on hand to help. A great greeting from David who always runs the dining room so well along with his fabulous team of Millie, Thomas & Dominic who looked after us so well with a great choice of varied dishes from the lunch menu with something for every pallet. The food as always on our visits was excellent, fresh local products, cooked & presented to perfection wether the fish, meat along with options including fantastic vegetables as well. The pudding options like the starters along with the main meals offered something for all. The staff all enhanced our visit with wonderful, efficient & helpful service answering all questions or queries with good humour along with a smile. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to the Cottage Hotel which is always a real pleasure to start our holiday in Devon. Bindi, Sarah, Sarah & William offer a great service, are always very welcoming and happy to help so just ask & the meal offers a real treat with excellent value for money too. Stayed for 1 night as a surprise for my birthday from my husband. Room was great with a lovely sea view and balcony which was even better with the sun being so hot. Very spacious and clean. Enjoyed a 5 course dinner and cooked breakfast the next morning and food was really lovely and tasty with plenty of choice. Every member of staff we encountered were extremely friendly and nothing was ever too much trouble for any of them. Would highly recommend staying here as a real gem right on the coast.

Stayed just for one night while walking the southwest coast path. Superb service throughout, great food, very comfortable room with a balcony and sea view. Something of a throwback to the 1960s and 70s this is a very well run family hotel that upholds traditional values, would highly recommend a stay here if you want a relaxing, homely and tranquil setting. A well stocked bar with a good local real ale, sensibly priced and very good lunches and a first class evening meal all with impeccable service. The Wi-Fi reception was first class, all in all a 10 out of 10 stay and very good value.

We went for a three night stay and it surpassed our expectations. All rooms are sold on a demi-pension/half-board basis with the dinner having a god choice of options and the menu changing daily. Almost all the bedrooms face the sea and one can also relax in the bar and lounge areas. The coastal path and other footpaths are almost on the doorstep. We visited some interesting National Trust properties. Service from the family-run team was very good. I am glad we went off-season as I could imagine the whole area getting very busy in summer which would stretch the capacity of roads and car parks!
