Shaanxi Province Museum: A Glimpse into Ancient China's Capitals from the 11th to 10th Century BC

Shaanxi Province is located in the inland region of China. You might recognize it as the location of the ancient capital Chang'an during the Tang Dynasty. However, its history stretches much further back, from the 11th century BC to the 10th century AD, serving as the capital for 14 dynasties including the Western Zhou, Qin, Han, Sui, and Tang. The Shaanxi Museum showcases this rich history, making it a fascinating place to visit. The museum features intriguing exhibits such as the terracotta cavalry and civil officials from the Qin Shi Huang era (around 200 BC), the painted goose and fish lamp from the Han Dynasty (202 BC - 220 AD) designed to absorb smoke, and various Buddha statues. The Tang Dynasty sculptures are particularly vibrant and often depict humorous postures, making them a delight to observe. It's astonishing to learn that Chinese characters were invented around 1200 BC. By 200 BC, the characters used in different regions varied greatly. However, when Qin Shi Huang unified China, he also standardized the characters. Despite the vast differences in spoken dialects across China today (which are not just regional accents but can be completely unintelligible to speakers from other areas), the written language remains consistent in grammar and characters, thanks to Qin Shi Huang. Address: 91 Xiaozhai East Road, Yanta District, Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, China Access: 10-minute walk from Xiaozhai Station on Metro Line 2 Opening Hours: Winter (November 15 - March 14): 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM Summer (March 15 - November 14): 8:30 AM - 6:00 PM Closed: Mondays (except public holidays) Admission: Free (reservation required via WeChat)

Xi'an | The Big Wild Goose Pagoda and its surroundings, probably only the Big Wild Goose Pagoda is authentic

Xi'an | The Big Wild Goose Pagoda and its surroundings, probably only the Big Wild Goose Pagoda is authentic

🚗The Big Wild Goose Pagoda is located within the Daci'en Temple in Jinchang Prefecture of Tang Chang'an City (now south of Xi'an, Shaanxi Province), also known as 'Ci'en Temple Pagoda'. In the third year of the Tang Yonghui period (652 AD), Xuanzang supervised the construction of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda to preserve the Buddhist scriptures and statues brought back to Chang'an from India via the Silk Road. Initially, it had five stories, later increased to nine, and after several changes in the number of stories and height, it was finally fixed to the seven-story structure you see today, with a total height of 64.517 meters and a base side length of 25.5 meters. As the earliest and largest Tang Dynasty square pavilion-style brick pagoda still in existence, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda is a typical physical evidence of the ancient Indian Buddhist temple architectural form that entered the Central Plains with Buddhism and integrated into Chinese culture. It is a symbolic building that embodies the crystallization of the wisdom of ancient Chinese laborers. 🚗This pagoda was originally named 'Ci'en Temple Pagoda' and was later renamed 'Wild Goose Pagoda'. The origin of the name 'Wild Goose Pagoda' is widely believed to be based on the anecdote of 'burying wild geese to build a pagoda'. The legend recorded by Xuanzang in 'Great Tang Records on the Western Regions', about monks in India burying wild geese to construct a pagoda, explains the most credible theory of the origin of the Wild Goose Pagoda. 🚗It should be considered a must-visit spot in Xi'an. From a distance, it already appears to be leaning slightly. Coming out of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda metro station, you can capture its reflection. The gate and ticket office are on the other side of the park, near Joy City. It's still a bit hot during the day, so be mindful of heat prevention. Apart from the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, the surrounding commercial areas are probably all newly built, and this seems to be the only authentic site in the vicinity.
