Admont Abbey Library was founded in 1074 by the Archbishop of Salzburg with the aim of developing remote mountainous areas and spreading Christianity. It adopted the Benedictine system. With the rise of the Habsburg family's power, in 1770 Joseph Huber was commissioned to design and build what is now the world's largest monastery library, approximately 70 meters long. In 1865, the monastery suffered a severe fire that destroyed it, but the library was preserved. Today, the monastery is a museum, academic institution, tourist attraction, and a World Heritage Site. The entire library hall is 70 meters long, 14 meters wide, and 11 meters high (the central dome is 12.7 meters). It consists of three interconnected sections. The central dome is supported by 12 pink marble columns, and two long, narrow spaces extend from each side, each supported by three domed arches. Four staircases lead to the second floor (which is not open to the public). The library hall houses approximately 70,000 volumes, while the monastery's entire collection comprises approximately 200,000 volumes. The 130km journey from Melk to Admont offered breathtaking scenery, making it an ideal route for a road trip. Before closing time, we visited the abbey's backyard pond and witnessed a spectacular sunset glow. 🔷Day 3 Road Trip Itinerary: Departing from Admont to Grundlsee (about 70km), we began our Austrian lake district tour. The continuous scenic views along the way felt like moving through a painting. 1. Grundlsee Located in Salzkammergut near Bad Aussee, this 4 sq.km lake at 708m altitude serves as habitat for various fish species. Surrounded by Bergawald snow-capped mountains with emerald-green waters and lush forests, it resembles a paradise. We recommend Seehotel Seeblick Monti here, offering premier western lakeshore views. 2. Bad Aussee Just 5.5km from Grundlsee, you can leisurely explore Bad Aussee town and enjoy afternoon tea at local cafes or restaurants. 3. St. Wolfgang Traveling about 70km (1 hour) from Bad Aussee, we reached Hotel Peter in St. Wolfgang. This family-run traditional hotel sits at the entrance of the town's pedestrian zone right by Wolfgangsee Lake, featuring a scenic terrace with panoramic views of the lake and mountains.

The Eighth Wonder of the World 🌎 The Admont Monastery Library - Soon after its completion in the year 1776 the Admont library was called the “eighth World Wonder” 70 metres long, 14 metres wide and roughly 12 metres high, it is the largest monastery library in the world. The town of Admont is located in the Enns Valley under the Austrian Alps. We are just a glimpse of the 11th-century Admont Benedictine Abbey, once the center of medieval culture. The monastery covers a large area and there are many tall old trees in the garden. The most glorious of the Admont Abbey is the Abbey Library. This library, built in the second half of the eighteenth century, is a model of Rococo style. The 70-meter-long main hall, the dome is decorated with beautiful murals, and the statues in the hall symbolize the various meanings of the Catholic Church. The most famous ones are the "final four things" of the Catholic Church: death, final judgment, heaven and hell. There are 1,400 hand-written rare books and 150,000 books in the library.
