At the end of June, we traveled to Palermo, the capital of Sicily in southern Italy. We were incredibly lucky to rent an apartment in the old town, located inside a grand mansion that had been converted into a bed and breakfast. It even featured a courtyard and a pool, making it extremely comfortable. The building itself is a traditional three-story Italian square structure, with apartments on three sides and a lobby in the center. By the time we dropped off our luggage, it was almost 3:00 PM. We grabbed some pizza nearby and headed to Quattro Canti in the heart of the old town. It features four Baroque buildings, each adorned with a statue of an Italian monarch (Philip II, III, IV, and V) alongside their corresponding coat of arms, as well as four uniquely designed fountains. The eight small streets radiating from the square are packed with shops, street vendors, and restaurants selling everything from clothing and shoes to local specialties, fresh produce, beer, beverages, bread, and desserts. Street performers played music in the square, and tourists danced and sang along freely, creating a vibrant and bustling atmosphere. Strolling through this area, we saw many buildings and churches from different eras and in various architectural styles, though some had fallen into disrepair. We also enjoyed some reasonably priced and authentically delicious pasta in this neighborhood. On the second day, we continued exploring the old town and visited the must-see UNESCO World Heritage site, Palermo Cathedral. Admission to the main floor is free, while roof access requires a ticket. Originally built in the 3rd century, the church is remarkably well-preserved. Its main dome showcases its transformation from an Arab mosque into a Norman church, with Gothic elements added in the 13th century and Spanish Catalan styles incorporated in the 15th century—truly a living reflection of Spanish history. The cathedral also houses holy relics from the 15th to the 18th centuries; it is an absolutely fascinating church to visit. Afterward, we walked to the Fontana della Vergogna in Piazza Pretoria. Originally built in Florence and later transported here, it features over fifty marble mythological statues, though it is surrounded by a metal fence, so you cannot get too close. Walking further, we arrived at the Norman Palace (Palazzo dei Normanni), the oldest royal residence in Europe. The architecture is a stunning blend of Norman and Byzantine styles and served as the main seat for the Kings of Sicily. We first toured the Royal Apartments, which currently serve as the seat of the Sicilian Regional Assembly. Then, we headed to the Cappella Palatina on the second floor, which is lavishly decorated with glittering gold Byzantine mosaics—absolutely magnificent. Finally, we explored the Royal Gardens and the archaeological ruins at the back (included in the combo ticket). On the third morning, we visited the Teatro Massimo di Palermo, the largest opera house in Italy and the third largest in Europe, featuring a stunningly beautiful domed ceiling. Next, we went to the Teatro Politeama Garibaldi, a Neoclassical circular building with a triumphal arch at its main entrance. Atop the arch sits a highly exquisite bronze statue of Apollo and Euterpe riding a chariot drawn by six horses. After lunch (following the Spanish meal schedule where lunch is after 2:00 PM and dinner is after 9:00 PM), we walked toward the waterfront and reached the pier to enjoy the ocean breeze. On the fourth day, we joined a day tour of archaeological ruins, heading to the ancient city of Agrigento. We passed through the old town, hopped off for half an hour to shop for local crafts and specialties (which was totally optional), and visited the 11th-century Norman Cathedral of St. Gerland (St. Orlando). Next was the Valley of the Temples, a World Heritage site. One temple is still quite well-preserved, while others are mostly just remaining columns. However, back in the 5th century, this was the most prosperous city in the Mediterranean, leading to the excavation of many historical artifacts. We ended the day sunbathing on a beautiful beach and taking a refreshing dip in the Mediterranean Sea. The crystal-clear blue water was the ultimate way to beat the heat. On our fifth day, we enjoyed some coffee at the apartment before heading out to the city's largest market, La Vucciria. Here, you can find spices from locally and around the world, as well as ham, sausages, cheese, truffles, sauces, fresh meat, produce, street food stalls, restaurants, and handicrafts. We dined on Spanish Tapas, Iberian Ham, and Fideuà (a noodle dish cooked in an iron pan, similar to Spanish seafood paella). We also drank fresh fruit juice and were so stuffed we could barely move, which made walking around the market the perfect way to digest. Leaving the market, we made our way to Palazzo Butera, a 17th-century Baroque palace facing the Mediterranean Sea that has now been transformed into an art museum.

🌊 An Island That Collects Civilizations Most places have a history. Sicily has layers — Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, each one leaving something behind before the next arrived to build on top of it. The result is an island that doesn’t belong to any single culture, any single era, any single version of itself. I didn’t expect to feel that walking its streets. But Sicily makes its history physical in a way few places do. 🏛️ The Greeks Left Their Temples The Valley of the Temples outside Agrigento — seven Greek temples standing on a ridge above the sea, older than the Parthenon, better preserved than most things in Athens. I walked between the columns at dusk, the stone turned amber by the falling light, and felt the particular silence that only very old things produce. 🕌 The Arabs Left Their Flavors For two centuries Sicily was Arab — and that presence never fully left. In Palermo’s Ballarò market, spices and noise and vendors calling out in a dialect that still carries echoes of Arabic. The Palatine Chapel — a Norman palace covered in Byzantine mosaics, built on Arab geometric principles — is the most beautiful proof of what happens when cultures stop fighting and start building together 🌋 And the Volcano Watched All of It Through every empire and every century, Mount Etna remained — Europe’s largest active volcano, visible from most of the island, still steaming, still reminding everyone who actually owns the place. ✈️ Getting There Palermo and Catania both have direct international connections. Book flights and hotels through Trip.com. Sicily was never just one place. That’s exactly what makes it unforgettable.

Local Eats: The golden "fried rice ball," authentically known in Sicily as Arancini! Fried to golden, crispy perfection on the outside and stuffed with Italian meat ragù, cheese, or peas on the inside. It gets its name from its resemblance to a little orange (Arancia). It's the locals' favorite street food breakfast. 🚌 09:30 - 10:00 | Transport: Ride the Temple Bus to Brave the Sanctuary Travel Guide: Buy your tickets at Piazzale Rosselli and hop straight onto the local TUA bus (Bus No. 1 or 2) heading to the Valley of the Temples. It is lined with charming craft shops. Puppet Encounter: Pick out a highly representative traditional Sicilian marionette (Opera dei Pupi). These puppets are typically medieval knights clad in armor and wielding sharp swords. If Seiya saw them, he'd definitely think he found his "Bronze Cloth" comrades. 🌅 19:00 - 20:30 | Sunset in the Old Town: Stunning Viewpoint Sunset Spectacle: As dusk approaches, head over to an old town viewpoint (like Viale della Vittoria or the terraces extending from the alleys of Via Atenea). Watch as the setting sun dyes the Mediterranean Sea and the distant Valley of the Temples a brilliant golden-red. It's the perfect spot for fans to capture a silhouette standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Seiya. 🦞 20:30 | Dinner: "Soy Sauce Style" Italian Seafood & Pizza Feast Foodie Facts: Traditional Italian cuisine might not use Chinese soy sauce, but Sicily boasts an intensely rich, pitch-black Squid Ink Pasta (Pasta al Nero di Seppia). Packed with sweet ocean flavors and a thick sauce, it completely satisfies that "soy-sauce-seafood" vibe both visually and tastefully! At the same time, clam seafood pasta and red shrimp pasta are absolute god-tier local signatures. Sunset/Temple View Restaurant Recommendations (Choose One): Restaurant Name | Features & Recommended Dishes | Location & Vibe - Il Re di Girgenti: Boasts the city's most breathtaking night view of the Valley of the Temples and a sunset terrace. Highly recommend their pistachio red shrimp pasta, grilled octopus, and fresh seafood platter. Located on the hillside near the Valley of the Temples; enjoy seafood while watching the Sanctuary light up. - Sal8: A highly-rated renowned seafood spot in the city center. Highly recommend the squid ink/Sicilian red shrimp pasta and Italian pizza. The seafood ingredients are incredibly fresh.

In Agrigento, the land does not simply hold ruins. It carries a memory of scale. On a ridge overlooking the sea, the Valley of the Temples unfolds like a civilization paused mid-breath — vast Doric columns rising from golden stone, aligned across open air as if still participating in a dialogue with sky, light, and horizon. This was once Akragas, one of the most powerful Greek cities in the Mediterranean, founded in the 6th century BCE and flourishing into a place of extraordinary wealth, ambition, and architectural confidence. What remains today is not only preservation. It is presence. Walking through the site, the temples do not feel like isolated monuments. They feel like fragments of a larger idea that once believed permanence was achievable. The Temple of Concordia, among the best preserved of all Doric structures, still holds its proportions with quiet authority, as if time has passed around it rather than through it. And yet, nothing here feels frozen. Wind moves through broken colonnades. Light shifts across ancient stone with the precision of something that has been doing this for millennia. Olive trees grow where political power once gathered. The sea glimmers in the distance, indifferent to the rise and fall of empires that once considered themselves eternal. It is easy, standing here, to understand why Agrigento’s ancient world has been described in almost mythic terms — a city that reached extraordinary prosperity before war, siege, and time gradually unraveled its dominance. And still, what lingers most is not collapse. It is attitude. A civilization that built as if tomorrow would never end. A place where architecture was not just function or faith, but declaration. 📍 Location: Agrigento, Italy 🚗 How to get there: Train or drive from Palermo or Catania; the archaeological park sits just outside the modern town 🕰️ Best time: Late afternoon for golden light across the temples and long shadows over the ridge 💡 Travel tip: Stay until sunset — the transition from daylight to dusk turns the entire valley into a continuous silhouette of memory. In Agrigento, ruins are not the end of history. They are what history looks like when it refuses to disappear.

Standing on it feels like you’re walking across an alien world or a giant piece of moonstone. From the top, you face the turquoise Mediterranean Sea, shimmering so brightly it almost doesn’t look real. 🌊💙 🤍 The Surface: Beautiful… yet unreal. The limestone is silky smooth under your feet, but it leaves chalk marks on your hands and clothes. Totally worth it, just don’t wear your favourite black outfit. 💳 Entrance & Practical Info · Entrance: €6 · Payment: card or mobile accepted · Time limit: none during our visit — wander as long as you like · Footwear: wear good walking shoes; the surface can be slippery 🧭 How to Get There This part is easier than it looks: 1. Head to Lido Scala Dei Turchi — it’s a café and the official unofficial access point. 2. Take the long, winding staircase down to the beach. 3. Turn right and walk along the sandy, slightly rocky shore. 4. Keep going until you reach the entrance — it’s straightforward and not difficult to find. 📸 Want the View Without Paying? No problem. Along the main road you’ll find several viewpoints where you can take stunning top‑down photos of the cliffs. Look for: Belvedere Scala dei Turchi. Perfect for that dramatic white‑cliff‑meets‑blue‑sea shot. 📷✨ 🚗 Parking Tips · Free parking along the road · Paid car parks start at €2, then €1 per hour · Bring some cash — a few cafés nearby don’t accept cards 🌅 Final Vibe Scala dei Turchi is one of those places that stays with you — the contrast of white rock and turquoise sea, the surreal shapes, the peaceful coastline. It’s a spot where you can sit, breathe, and feel like you’ve slipped into another dimension. A Sicilian highlight you’ll be talking about long after you leave. 💙🤍🌊 #travel2026 #travel #couplestrip #beachlife #naturalwonders #italy #europe #seascapes #thingstodo

If you haven't been to Sicily, it's like you haven't been to Italy, because Sicily is where you'll find the source of Italy's beauty. 🛫 Day 1: Palermo · A Hybrid Labyrinth of Norman and Arab Influences 🌅Arrive in Palermo, the capital of Sicily, in the morning. Head straight to the Norman Palace. The golden mosaics of the Palatine Chapel cover every surface, where Byzantine, Norman, and Arab styles intertwine, a microcosm of the island's mixed heritage. The Palermo Cathedral next door is even more remarkable, with different styles added by various dynasties, like an open history book. 🍽️At noon, dive into Ballarò Market, Sicily's liveliest street kitchen. Must-try: chickpea fritters (panelle), spleen sandwiches (pani ca' meusa), swordfish rolls. Eat on plastic stools by the roadside, amidst the constant shouts of vendors. 🌊In the afternoon, visit Teatro Massimo, Italy's largest opera house, where the final scene of 'The Godfather Part III' was filmed. Sit on the steps, as if hearing Michael Corleone's sigh as he fell. In the evening, go to Piazza Pretoria, home to the 'Fountain of Shame' surrounded by nude statues. Locals found it too explicit, hence the name. 🏛️ Day 2: Agrigento · Twilight in the Valley of the Temples 🌞Drive 2 hours to Agrigento in the morning. The Temple of Concordia in the Valley of the Temples is so well-preserved, second only to the Parthenon in Athens. Stand beneath the colossal stone columns from 2500 years ago, as the carvings on the Doric columns cast long shadows in the setting sun. 🍽️At noon, eat sardine pasta (Pasta con le Sarde, with its unique wild fennel aroma) at a restaurant near the temples, paired with a glass of local Grillo white wine. 🌊In the afternoon, continue to explore the Temple of Juno and the Temple of Heracles. In the evening, look back from the valley floor as the temples turn into golden silhouettes in the twilight. If you come in March, the almond blossoms in the valley are in full bloom, a sea of pink and white flowers against the ancient stone columns, an unreal beauty. 🌋 Day 3: Taormina · Greek Theater on the Cliff 🌞Drive 3 hours to Taormina in the morning. This cliffside town is Sicily's most beautiful balcony. Head straight to the Ancient Greek Theater (Teatro Greco), the theater with the most beautiful view in the world – with Mount Etna as its backdrop. Sit on the stone steps from the 3rd century BC, watching the volcano emit smoke. 🍽️At noon, find food on the town's main street, Corso Umberto. Must-try: pistachio millefeuille, almond gelato. Sicilian sweets are a sweet legacy left by the Arabs. 🌊In the afternoon, visit Piazza IX Aprile to see the church and bell tower. Hike down to Isola Bella, a heart-shaped island surrounded by a jelly-like sea. At low tide, you can walk across the shallows to the island. In the evening, take the cable car up the mountain and watch the sunset paint Mount Etna rose-colored from the terrace of a cliffside hotel. ⛪ Day 4: Syracuse · Malèna's Beautiful Legend 🌞Drive 1.5 hours to Syracuse in the morning. Must-try: sea urchin pasta (fresh sea urchin mixed directly into hot pasta), grilled swordfish. 🌊In the afternoon, visit the Fountain of Arethusa, where papyrus grows in the water, a spring where a nymph transformed in ancient Greek mythology. #ancientbuildings During my summer vacation, I visited the Valley of the Temples in Sicily, and it was a truly breathtaking experience! 🌄 Located just outside Agrigento, this archaeological site is home to some of the best-preserved ancient Greek temples in the world. The entrance fee is around €12, which felt like a steal for the incredible historical and cultural value. Walking through the Valley, you’re greeted by the stunning ruins of temples like the Concordia and Juno, set against the backdrop of rolling Sicilian hills. Each temple has its own story, and the informative signage makes it easy to appreciate their historical significance. The views are also spectacular, especially during sunset. 🌅🏛️ After exploring the temples, I enjoyed a leisurely drive through the surrounding countryside, which is dotted with charming villages and local trattorias. The nearby Agrigento city also offers some lovely options for dining and shopping. Overall, the Valley of the Temples is a must-see for history enthusiasts and anyone interested in ancient architecture. It’s a highlight of Sicily that shouldn’t be missed! #trip #ValleyOfTheTemples #Sicily #AncientRuins #CulturalHeritage #TravelAdventure

#timetotravel The Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, Sicily, is a mesmerizing testament to the grandeur of ancient Greek architecture. My visit to this archaeological wonder left me in awe of the past and the enduring legacy of Greek civilization. Strolling through the valley, I marveled at the remarkably preserved temples, each with its unique character and history. The Temple of Concordia, with its towering columns, stands as a symbol of classical beauty and perfection. The setting, overlooking the Sicilian countryside, adds to the enchantment. As the sun sets, the golden hues bathe the temples in a warm glow, creating a magical atmosphere. The Valley of the Temples is not just a historical site; it's a spiritual and artistic experience. It's a place that makes history come alive, and I left with a profound appreciation for the timeless beauty of ancient Greece. #agrigento #italy #sicily

#Overseas Travel The ancient Greek ruins in Sicily, the Valley of the Temples, Valle dei Templi, has been listed as one of the World Cultural Heritages🏛🏛. Around the sixth century BC, the ancient Greeks built many Greek temples in the Agrigento area. Among them, Tempio della Concordia is the most well-preserved and very spectacular! If you want to learn more about ancient Greek civilization, it is worth a visit. A reminder to everyone: The entire Valley of the Temples is very large, there is some distance between each temple, and there is no shelter inside, so you must bring enough clean water and sunscreen. #ItalianTravel #EuropeanTravel #OverseasTravel

🌟《Scala dei Turchi》 🗺🇮🇹The Turkish Stairs, located on the coast of Provincia di Agrigento in Sicily, are a unique and beautiful white rock cliff. The Sicilians used to call pirates 🏴‍☠️ “Turks”. The pirates would stop their ships in this bay and climb up these stairs, hence the name Turkish Stairs. 🚘The Turkish Steps are about 2 hours’ drive from downtown Palermo. 📍📍Palermo, the capital of Sicily Sicily is a Mediterranean island located in southern Italy❤️ #italytravel #southernitaly #sicily #🇮🇹#Explore the secrets of a European town #Free travel in Europe #I'm so hung up

#Overseas Travel The Temple of the Temples is a collection of ancient Greek temples left in Sicily between the 6th and 4th centuries BC. While there are numerous temples, a few are well-preserved (such as the Temple of Concordia), but many are left with only a few columns or stones. This is left to your imagination. #Overseas Travel

#Overseas Travel The Scala dei Turchi is a large stretch of white limestone coastline, set against the blue sky and sea. It is very beautiful. The rocks look impassable from a distance, but in fact you can walk along the rock layers. #Overseas Travel

We visited this spa before our flight back to Australia and had 90-minute Balinese massages, which were wonderful. At around 300k, the price included a foot scrub as well as tea and fruit afterward. The massage rooms were pleasant, featuring a shower and fresh towels. My husband had a male masseuse, and I had a female one; both were very professional and provided excellent service.

Sicily feels like a destination from another world. Surrounded by the Mediterranean, Italy’s largest island brings together ancient Greek temples, Baroque towns, volcanic landscapes, beautiful beaches and a food culture that is deeply connected to its history. 🌅 My Experience What I love most about Sicily is its incredible variety. One day can begin with an espresso in a historic town, continue with a coastal drive beside turquoise water and end with sunset over an ancient landscape. Sicily doesn't feel like just one destination. Every corner has its own personality — from lively Palermo and Catania to elegant Taormina, historic Syracuse and the beautiful Baroque towns of southeastern Sicily. 🏛️ Walk Through Ancient History Sicily has been shaped by Greek, Roman, Arab, Norman and Spanish influences, leaving behind an extraordinary mixture of architecture and culture. One of the most impressive places is the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, where enormous ancient Greek temples stand among olive trees and almond trees. Walking between these ancient columns while looking across the Sicilian landscape feels like stepping into another era. 🌋 Meet Mount Etna No trip to Sicily feels complete without seeing Mount Etna. As Europe's highest volcano and one of the world's most active volcanoes, Etna dominates the landscape of eastern Sicily. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The landscape changes dramatically as you climb higher — from green forests and orchards to dark lava fields and almost lunar-looking scenery. For me, this contrast between volcano and Mediterranean sea is one of Sicily's most unforgettable sights. 🌊 Taormina & the Mediterranean Then there is Taormina, one of Sicily's most iconic destinations. Stroll along Corso Umberto, enjoy a coffee with a sea view and visit the ancient Greek Theatre, where the combination of historic ruins, mountains and the Mediterranean creates an incredible backdrop. Nearby Isola Bella adds another beautiful coastal scene, especially when viewed from above. 🏖️ Beaches & Coastal Escapes Sicily is also made for beach lovers. From the turquoise waters of the Egadi Islands to the beautiful coastlines around Syracuse and the nature reserves of Vendicari, the island offers everything from sandy beaches to rocky coves and dramatic Mediterranean landscapes. And sometimes the best plan is simply to find a quiet seaside village, order something cold to drink and watch the sun slowly disappear into the sea. 🍋 A Food Lover's Paradise Sicilian food is another reason to fall in love with the island. Don't miss: 🍊 Arancini / Arancine
🍆 Pasta alla Norma
🐟 Fresh seafood
🍋 Granita & brioche
🍰 Cannoli
🍨 Sicilian gelato
🥜 Pistachio desserts from Bronte Sicily's food culture reflects the many civilizations that have influenced the island, while its markets and street food remain an important part of everyday life. 📸 Best Photo Moments 📍 Taormina & Isola Bella
📍 Mount Etna
📍 Valley of the Temples
📍 Palermo's historic streets
📍 Syracuse & Ortigia
📍 Baroque towns of Val di Noto
📍 Mediterranean sunsets
📍 Colourful Sicilian markets 💡 Travel Tips · 🚗 A road trip is a great way to experience Sicily, especially if you want to combine cities, villages and coastal areas. · 👟 Bring comfortable shoes for historic centres and archaeological sites. · 🌋 If visiting Etna, check current volcanic conditions and local access guidance before heading to higher areas. · 🌅 Leave time for sunsets — Sicily has plenty of beautiful coastal viewpoints. · 🍋 Don't just eat at tourist restaurants; explore local markets and traditional neighbourhoods. · 🏛️ Sicily has many UNESCO sites, so plan ahead if you're interested in history and architecture. ❤️ Final Thoughts Sicily is more than beautiful beaches and ancient ruins. It is the smell of citrus trees, the sound of waves along a fishing village, the sight of Etna rising above the landscape, a plate of fresh pasta on a sunny terrace and the warm colours of an Italian sunset. Sicily is where history, nature, food and the Mediterranean way of life come together — and every journey here feels like its own little story. 🇮🇹🌊🍋✨ #Sicily #SicilyItaly #ItalyTravel #VisitSicily #ExploreSicily #MediterraneanTravel #Taormina #MountEtna #Palermo #Syracuse #ValleyOfTheTemples #ItalianFood #TravelInspiration

Sicily is the crossroads of Mediterranean civilization, layered with Greek, Roman, Arab, and Norman history. But the best way to truly understand it isn't by driving, but by cruising around to see all 8 World Heritage sites. 🏛️ 8 World Heritage sites, a treasure trove of civilization every day Set sail from Valletta, home of the Knights of Malta, and stop at the Valley of the Temples (the best-preserved ancient Greek temples), Palermo (the crown of Arab-Norman aesthetics), Taormina (the seaside town praised by Goethe), Syracuse (hometown of Archimedes), and the volcanic landscapes of the Aeolian Islands. Every stop includes commentary from an accompanying historian, so it's more than just a quick photo op. 🌋 Watch an active volcano erupt from the deck The cruise will sail past Stromboli, a natural lighthouse of the Mediterranean that has been erupting for thousands of years. Standing on the deck watching the red glow from the crater with the blue Mediterranean beneath your feet is an experience you can't get on land. Legend has it that the Cyclops in Homer's Odyssey was inspired by this volcano. 🍷 Sicilian flavors curated by a celebrity chef We've invited Italian star chef Denny Imbroisi on board to prepare Sicilian dishes that blend tradition and creativity every day, paired with wines from the Mount Etna region. As you dine, you'll also absorb the culinary culture of the Mediterranean. 🚢 Stay in a PONANT luxury suite with a private balcony and Diptyque toiletries. This floating palace is an experience in itself. ✨ View the full Sicily itinerary
