Came to the south of Portugal for vacation, this time choosing to stay in the newest five-star hotel in the Algarve region. The whole resort is quite big. We chose to take Fixbus🚌 from Lisbon to 📍Albufeira and then take Uber to the hotel. 🏨The welcome drink when checking in to the hotel is sparkling wine from Portugal🥂 The hotel has its own beach, but the sand is quite coarse, and there are cliffs on both sides, which is very spectacular⛰️🌊 The hotel is decorated with an ocean theme, and the exterior facade resembles shells and fish scales🐟 Overall experience score 9/10

Price per Person - we paid 28eur for two, so 14eur per night. that’s amazing deal, right?!? Rating - 4 stars out of 5, because the beds just were not good for our backs, if they change mattresses — would be 5. even tho - would definitely return in off season, can’t imagine how expensive and crowded it would be in the season. #staycation

To end my Portugal scene, i finally settled for the coastal city, #albufeira. You'll find a sandy beach, blue water and magnificent rock formations in the surroundings-plus beautiful ladies & hunks busy sun tanning along the beach stretc. instead of getting myself wet, i joined the group to hunt for dolphins and cave watching around Algarve on a boat. it was sooo much fun!! we took pictures and had a good time with the friendly dolphins. We spent a week at Clube Porto de Mos from 07.07.26 to 14.07.26 as a family with two children (9, 19) and experienced Portugal for the first time. We had booked the luxury apartment with a frontal sea view in Villa No. 3. The apartment included a separate bedroom, a very spacious living room with a sofa bed, and a fully equipped kitchen with a large fridge and freezer. The bathroom was also quite large, featuring a toilet, bidet, and a bathtub with a glass wall for showering. Large glass doors from both rooms led to a connected balcony that had a table with four chairs and a large drying rack. From the balcony, there was an incredible view overlooking the cliffs, the nearby beach, and the ocean. Our apartment hadn’t been recently renovated, but that didn’t detract from the experience at all. It was still in excellent condition, very clean, and well-prepared. This level of cleanliness and care extended to the entire resort. The green spaces, indoor and outdoor pools, gym, bar, and dining areas were all immaculately maintained. Staff, including gardeners and housekeeping, were always bustling around, keeping everything in order, and their friendly, attentive approach added to the family-like atmosphere. Any issues that arose were resolved immediately. The resort is spacious yet easy to navigate. The buildings are small, with only one story, and there were no overwhelming crowds. By the pool, there were usually enough loungers available, and the few people who reserved spots early didn’t pose much of an issue. When loungers were full, the well-maintained lawn under the trees by the pool made for a relaxing space. There was also a second, smaller pool that often had available chairs. In the dining area, the cozy and intimate vibe continued. We opted for half-board, and the food selection, while not massive, was perfectly sufficient and delicious. There’s no risk of leaving hungry. Comparing it to the overwhelming buffets of all-inclusive resorts misses the point; the quality was excellent, and the experience felt much more personal. The hotel is a 5-minute walk down the road to a beautiful flat beach where everyone can find a spot. The area is well-maintained, with two small eateries offering plenty of options for snacks and dinners. The nearest large supermarket (Intermarché) is only 5 minutes away by car, but it might be trickier to find shops on foot nearby. Overall, we’re left asking ourselves why we hadn’t vacationed in Portugal sooner. The country is authentic and charming, offering more advantages than Spain or Italy in terms of hospitality, cleanliness, natural beauty, stunning beaches (our favorite was possibly Beliche), and great value for money. We traveled extensively during our trip and didn’t encounter the kind of mass tourism we’ve seen elsewhere, not even in Albufeira, Portugal’s famed party hub, which still seemed very well managed. Instead, we found warm hospitality and an inviting atmosphere. This was an unforgettable stay, and we plan to return, not only for the country’s beauty but also because of our fantastic experience at Clube Porto de Mos. This hotel may not dazzle with luxury, but it shines with character!

Vila Branca was an incredible experience for me. The atmosphere was great and the place felt very welcoming. The rooms were spacious, well-organized, and comfortable. We opted for a pool view with a balcony, which turned out to be a fantastic choice. The balcony was huge, offering a lovely view of the pool and sunbeds. However, not all rooms have a balcony, so it’s worth checking if that’s important for your holiday. While there’s an all-inclusive option, we decided against it because there was a very handy shop just down the road, stocked with plenty of useful items. By the pool, there’s a pool bar that serves drinks and food, but it’s only open for lunch. If you visit, look out for Joseph at the bar—he’s a funny guy with a great sense of humor who’s sure to make you laugh. The pool area itself was tranquil and relaxing, surrounded by ample sunbeds. On some days, we ventured to the beach, which wasn’t too far—a 20-minute walk from the hotel. The beach sunbeds were very comfortable, well-maintained, and included shade, but you do need to book them in advance. They cost around 10 euros each, which I felt was worth it. When it came to meals, guests could either dine out in town or choose the hotel’s inclusive mini restaurant. Overall, this was a fantastic holiday experience, and I really enjoyed it. Parking is free at the village gate; the belfry (torre sineira) is free to walk around, the Igreja de São Pedro and the Pelourinho (stone pillory) are open daytime. The Riba-Côa Museum (Museu Municipal) is €2, 10:00–12:30/14:00–17:30 Tue–Sun, closed Mon—small, with transhumance gear: sheep bells, woven saddlebags, and photos of spring drives from the montes to the plains. The “sheep path” is the signed 3 km descent from the village to the Côa riverbed and back (40 min down, 55 min up), where you still see flock trails worn into the schist and the occasional idle corral. I packed water and a torresmo pastry from the village café (€1.50). Mistake: I went in January and the wind on the belfry was 60 km/h with 3 °C—this is a spring/autumn walk, not winter. Another mistake: thinking the museum explains the whole transhumance story—it doesn’t, you need the path to feel it. Worth it? Yes. Castelo Rodrigo is quieter than Piódão, the museum is a €2 primer, and the sheep path is free and border-real. Question: does a €2 museum plus a free flock trail beat a €10 fortress, or is the border silence the only thing that matters?

The Riba-Côa Museum (Museu da Terra de Riba-Côa) is €2, 10:00–13:00/14:00–18:00 Tue–Sun, closed Mon, with a room on transhumance: the spring/autumn sheep drive between the plateau and the Douro vineyards, leather cantaris, and iron crooks. I walked the signed 3 km “Caminho da Transumância” from the village west to a stone shelter (abrigo de pastores) where the flock rests—no fence, no ticket, just thyme and merino droppings in May. A local baker in the square sells broa de milho (corn bread) for €1.50, cash only. Mistake: I visited in February and the museum was open but the path had thigh-deep frost pockets in shade—April–June or Sept–Oct for the sheep-path bloom. Another mistake: driving the M1126 after rain; the clay plateau ruts badly, a small car bottoms out. Worth it? Yes. Castelo Rodrigo gets 5% of the visitors of Piódão and the transhumance story is more alive (you’ll hear bells in May). €2 museum + free belfry + free path = a full morning for pocket change. Question: does a near-empty border village with a €2 museum beat a famous schist town with gift shops, or is solitude the whole point?

If you’re planning to visit the Algarve and want to see more than just one town, renting a car was absolutely worth it for us. The Algarve has so many beautiful beaches, cliffs, and charming towns spread along the coastline that having your own car gave us the freedom to explore at our own pace. We rented our car directly through Klass Wagen’s website and chose the full coverage insurance. For 5 days was 148.88€ (May 2026) plus the security deposit of 150€ which we got it back afterwards. It cost a little more, but for us, it was worth every euro. Before our trip, we’d read plenty of stories about people being charged for tiny scratches or minor damage when returning rental cars. With full coverage, we simply handed back the keys without worrying about inspections or unexpected fees, making the whole experience completely stress-free. The pickup process was also incredibly easy. After arriving at Faro Airport, a shuttle picked us up in less than 15 minutes and took us to the rental office. Collecting the car was quick, and we were on the road in no time. We stayed in Portimão, which we found to be one of the more affordable places to stay in the Algarve. From there, everything we wanted to visit was within an easy drive. In just five days, we explored: 📍 Ponta da Piedade 📍 Lagos 📍 Carvoeiro 📍 Albufeira 📍 Faro Without a car, visiting all these places would have taken much more planning and relied heavily on bus schedules. Instead, we could stop whenever we found a beautiful viewpoint, spend as much time as we wanted at each beach, and change our plans whenever we felt like it. Returning the car at the end of the trip was just as easy. We dropped it off near Faro Airport and caught our flight home without any hassle. We booked two weeks at a 5-star all-inclusive and received exactly what we expected. There was absolutely nothing we could criticize here. It's a very beautiful hotel situated in a peaceful area. The pool area is stunning and the beach is fantastic. A bus runs hourly to Lagos, costing 1.2€ per person. There's also a hop-on-hop-off transfer that goes up to the cliffs—5€ for a single ride or 6€ for an all-day ticket. Additionally, the train to Faro stops almost right by the hotel, with fares to Albufeira costing 5.2€. It was simply a breathtakingly beautiful vacation.
