A hidden gem to visit in September with fewer crowds and lower costs
While others squeeze into popular cities to see the crowds, these eight cities prefer to keep their distance, each showing its own character through the seasons. Within two to three hours by high-speed train, you can reach these places without spending much, yet the experience shifts from endless forests and snowfields to border waterfalls. Whether you want bustling city life or wild solitude, they each have their own charm.
1️⃣ Yichun | Heilongjiang
At the end of September, the forest sea’s pine needles just start to turn golden. Standing before the strange stones of Tangwang River’s forest sea, the wind passes through granite cracks, carrying the scent of plants and earth.
📍 Walk along the west trail from the entrance, where strange stones and ancient trees intertwine. In the late afternoon light, the stone textures stretch long, and the shadows flicker unsettlingly.
⏰ Mid-October to late October is peak foliage season, but late September has fewer people, so you can have the whole forest to yourself.
⚠️ The mountain temperature varies greatly. Wear short sleeves at noon but put on a windbreaker after 4 PM. Don’t tough it out.
🍜 After descending, head into Yichun city and find any iron pot stew restaurant. Ribs stewed with green beans and flatbread steam up the pot, warming your face. Locals like to add vermicelli, which soaks up the broth—bite in carefully, it’s piping hot.
2️⃣ Zhenjiang | Jiangsu
Jinshan, Jiaoshan, and Beigushan mountains face each other across the river. Don’t expect to see them all in one day. If you can only visit one, I recommend spending half a day at Jinshan.
📍 Jinshan Temple is built on the mountain. Climb from the foot to the top, where temples and pagodas layer upon each other. On October afternoons, the river breeze blows through the mountain gate, ringing the eaves’ bells. From the mid-mountain, you can see the river’s sparkling white light.
Jiaoshan is quieter, perfect for those who don’t like climbing stairs.
⚠️ After 5:30 PM, Beigushan’s light is blocked by buildings, so mornings are better. On the way, visit Ganlu Temple. Maoshan in Jurong is outside the city; don’t go unless you have a car.
🚄 Taxi from Zhenjiang South Station to Jinshan Temple costs about 25 yuan.
🍜 Each mountain foot has small shops selling Hengshun vinegar-flavored snacks, but authentic Guogai noodles aren’t found inside the scenic area.
📍 Near Dashikou, Lao Zhao Noodle Shop serves red broth with braised meat. The noodles are chewy, and the vinegar aroma is strong.
3️⃣ Xining | Qinghai
Inside the butter flower hall of Ta’er Monastery, the scent is thick and overwhelming. In the chilly corridor, the smell of butter mixed with Tibetan incense hits your nose. The green Tara in the murals looks downcast, and the feather-like patterns on the robes are so detailed you hold your breath.
⚠️ Many halls inside the temple prohibit photography. Don’t raise your phone randomly. Respecting the rules is more important than anything.
Dongguan Grand Mosque is liveliest after afternoon prayers.
⏰ On Fridays, the square fills with white hats. You squeeze into the crowd to hear the imam’s voice spread—quiet yet powerful.
🍜 After the temple, go to Nanguan Street for a bowl of lamb intestine noodles. The lamb fat coats the chewy noodles, and a spoonful of chili makes your forehead sweat. If you’re with family, don’t order hand-pulled lamb; the meat is tough and hard for elders to chew.
4️⃣ Chongzuo | Guangxi
Detian Transnational Waterfall still has strong water flow in mid-November. The tail end of the rainy season makes it thunder down onto the Guichun River. Riding a bamboo raft under the waterfall, the mist blinds your eyes, and the palm trees of Vietnam shimmer faintly across the river.
📍 Walk up the waterfall boardwalk to see the waterfall drop in three tiers. Water splashes on the stone steps, and the air is filled with the damp, earthy smell.
⚠️ The light is brightest after noon, but the waterfall is half shaded by trees then. It’s best to arrive before 9 AM.
Zuojiang Huashan rock paintings require a boat ride. 🛶 The boat drifts slowly across the river, and the red human figures on the cliff stare at you from 2,000 years ago. The sunset at Mingshi Pastoral steadies your whole being. Rent a bike at dusk and ride around the golden rice fields. The karst peaks in the distance glow warm orange in the sunset.
5️⃣ Alxa | Inner Mongolia
Populus euphratica trees only roar like this once a year. In late October, all the leaves in Ejina turn golden, stretching from Erdaoqiao to Badaoqiao, a sea of gold. The reflection forest at Qidaoqiao is like a mirror on the water. Standing there to take photos, fallen leaves float on the water’s surface, and your feet crunch on the sandy ground.
⚠️ The wind is strong. Use a strap on your hat or it will blow away in a second.
The sand dunes of Badain Jaran Desert have wave-like patterns.
📍 Rent an off-road vehicle from Youqi and rush up Bilutu Peak, the “Mount Everest of the desert,” your heart pounding. Coming down, the sand is hot on your feet—you can’t stand barefoot for more than two seconds.
🍜 At the scenic area entrance, a lamb noodle shop serves fresh broth and tender meat. The cold mixed sand chives are crisp and help cool your hands and feet.
6️⃣ Qiannan | Guizhou
The water in Wolong Pool at Libo Zhangjiang looks unreal, so blue it doesn’t seem real. During the dry season in December, the water is lower but clearer. Sunlight on the surface makes it as thin as cellophane. Walking along the trail, the sound of waterfalls emerges from the forest, and the air is moist and cool.
⚠️ The steps in the scenic area are slippery. Wear non-slip shoes and avoid sandals. The Seven-hole Bridge is better for photos in the dry season, with exposed stones as a backdrop for the piers.
⏰ Before 9 AM, there are fewer people. In the afternoon during peak season, the bridge is crowded.
🍜 After the scenic area, head to Libo town where streets are full of tofu pudding and grilled fish. The fish skin is crispy, the tofu pudding silky, and dipping it in fish mint sauce makes your forehead sweat.
7️⃣ Jiaozuo | Henan
At Yuntai Mountain’s Red Stone Gorge in November, sunlight filters through the stone gaps, turning the pools emerald green. Walking the canyon boardwalk, water drips from the cliffs above, streams babble below, and the air carries the sharp scent of plants and wet limestone.
📍 Enter from Red Stone Gorge and don’t stop after finishing at Monkey Valley. From Zhuyu Peak, you can overlook the entire Yuntai Mountain range, but elders should be cautious—the steps are steep and slippery.
⚠️ After 4 PM, the canyon light dims, making photography difficult.
Qingtian River is wilder, winding around the water. In late October, red leaves mix with green trees. Shennong Mountain’s white bark pines and sea of clouds are a perfect November match. At the summit, overlooking the Taihang Mountains and feeling the mountain breeze clears your mind like never before.
🚄 Buses run once an hour from Jiaozuo city to Yuntai Mountain. The schedule is sparse, so driving yourself is more flexible.
8️⃣ Anshan | Liaoning
Autumn at Qianshan starts at the ancient temple at the mountain foot.
📍 Enter from the north gate and climb the stone steps to Wufoding Peak. It takes about two hours round trip, but the pine waves at the top are worth it. In late October, the leaves are a mix of yellow and green. When the wind passes through the treetops, pine needles rustle, and the steps are covered with fallen leaves.
⚠️ Elders and children should be careful; the stone steps are steep and slippery. The giant rock at Tiansheng Bridge looks like it’s floating. Standing on the bridge, you see green pines and strange stones intertwined, with the distant city buildings blurred.
⏰ After 5 PM, the light softens. On the way down, stop at a farmhouse restaurant in Qianshan District for fried river fish with pickled vegetables and corn flatbread—it will whet your appetite.
🚄 Taxi from Anshan West Station to the scenic area entrance takes about 20 minutes.
These eight cities don’t have top-tier fame, but each withstands close inspection. At the end of peak season and the start of the off-season, they’re affordable and clean, forming a complete travel rhythm from north to south. Pick one nearby or the one you miss most, and take a weekend trip. Both wilderness and city life will embrace you.
