Amdo County travel guide and discussion

1️⃣ Plan Your Route in Advance: Determine the attractions you want to visit and your general itinerary in advance. This allows you to book transportation and accommodation more reasonably, avoiding last-minute decisions that can increase costs. For example, plan whether to take the classic Lhasa - Namtso - Shigatse loop or the Nyingchi - Bomi - Ranwu Lake route. 2️⃣ Choose the Right Season: The cost of traveling to Tibet varies greatly depending on the season. During the off-season (generally from November to March), airfares and hotel prices drop significantly, and there may be discounts on entrance fees to attractions. Additionally, there are fewer tourists, making for a better travel experience. Transportation 3️⃣ Choose Flexible Transportation: In Tibet, public transportation such as buses is affordable. For example, minibuses in Lhasa cost just a few yuan to reach many places. On some tourist routes, carpooling can help share costs and allow you to meet fellow travelers. 4️⃣ Look for Discounts: Airlines and railway companies sometimes offer special promotions for tourist destinations. Keep an eye on related information in advance to snag heavily discounted air or train tickets. Accommodation and Dining 5️⃣ Choose Cost-Effective Accommodation: Use online travel platforms to compare prices and reviews of different hotels and guesthouses, and choose a place that is well-located and budget-friendly. Youth hostels are also a good option, with lower prices for dormitory beds and opportunities to exchange travel experiences. 6️⃣ Try Local Snacks: Tibet has many unique and inexpensive snacks, such as Tibetan noodles, sweet tea, and yak yogurt. You can taste authentic flavors at street-side shops, saving money while experiencing local food culture. Sightseeing 7️⃣ Buy Combo Tickets: Some attractions offer combo tickets, which are more cost-effective than buying individual tickets for each site. For example, the Potala Palace and Norbulingka combo ticket. 8️⃣ Know Free Admission Days: Some attractions have specific free admission days. Do your homework in advance and visit on these days to save on entrance fees. Other Tips 9️⃣ Prepare Common Medications: Bring common medications for altitude sickness, colds, and digestive issues to avoid high medical costs and ensure a smooth trip. 🔟 Learn Basic Tibetan and Local Customs: Knowing some simple Tibetan greetings can make locals feel your friendliness and might even get you small discounts in some situations. Understanding local religious customs and cultural taboos can help avoid unnecessary trouble and extra expenses.

Just got back from Amdo. Spent two leisurely days traveling along the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. The pace was very relaxed. 📍Overview Located next to the Qinghai-Tibet Railway in Amdo, Nagqu, this is a plateau wetland meadow landscape. It is free to enter and perfect for road trippers and photography enthusiasts. 🗺️Itinerary Day 1: Amdo County → Cuona Lake → Tip: The entire drive on National Highway 109 takes about 1.5 hours. The road conditions are good, but do not drive too fast. ✨Highlights The lake water is as clear as a mirror, reflecting the white clouds, and the grassy mounds are lush green. Hiking requires almost no effort, and every photo you take will look great. Highly recommended as a stop along the way. 🍜Local specialties Duoma hand-grabbed mutton (boiled in clear water, salty and fragrant), air-dried yak jerky (chewy), and butter tea (paired with tsampa to help with altitude sickness). You can find these at roadside Tibetan restaurants. 🏨Accommodation recommendations 1. Homestays near the scenic area: Amdo Jiacheng Oxygen-Rich Hotel. It is close to National Highway 109, making it convenient to get in and out, and you can see the sunrise over the grasslands. 2. City hotels: Pai Hotel (Amdo branch). Close to the train station, with diffused oxygen supply and free parking, making it a worry-free stopover. 🎒Travel essentials 1. Protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and oxygen canisters. 2. Personal items: Thermos and a thick jacket. 💡Practical tips 1. When driving on National Highway 109, be careful to avoid herds of cattle and sheep. 2. The light is strong at noon; early morning is best for capturing the reflections of clouds. 3. The altitude is high, so avoid strenuous running or jumping to prevent altitude sickness. 4. Respect the pastures of the herdsmen and take your trash with you. The wind in Amdo is very quiet. Watching the cloud shadows slowly move across the meadow makes me feel very at peace.

I genuinely recommend that everyone take the Qinghai-Tibet Railway at least once in their life!! This journey on the "Sky Road" is a unique blend of plateau romance and vast, magnificent landscapes. It is truly a trip of a lifetime❤️ I originally thought taking the train to Tibet was to slowly ascend and gradually adapt to altitude sickness, but after arriving, I realized I was completely misled! It's not about physical adaptation at all; it's purely to see this one-of-a-kind earthly paradise✨ I couldn't just lie down the whole way! My eyes were glued to the train window. The scenery changed every second, and I didn't want to miss a single frame! The journey leaving Tibet from Lhasa in reverse is absolutely legendary!! It connects all the romance of Tibet along the way: ✅ Tibet's largest freshwater lake, [Cuona Lake] The crystal-blue water set against the wilderness is so pure it heals the soul ✅ China's highest-altitude city, [Nagqu Station] The vast plateau atmosphere is off the charts ✅ The boundless [Qiangtang Grassland] So vast it heals all anxiety Along the way, you might encounter cute Tibetan antelopes and Tibetan wild donkeys—healing and breathtaking ✅ The highest point of the entire journey, [Tanggula Pass 5,072m] Endless snow-capped mountains, so magnificent it leaves you speechless There are also the gentle landscapes of the Tuotuo River and the source of the Yangtze River. Although I couldn't catch a glimpse of the night scenery of Hoh Xil and the Kunlun Mountains, the healing morning light of Qinghai Lake smoothed away all the fatigue of the journey🌅 I've compiled some super practical tips for traveling to Tibet! Beginners, just follow this guide👇 💡 About altitude sickness | Don't be scared by online guides anymore! Honestly! Altitude sickness doesn't discriminate between planes and trains! Taking the train slowly doesn't mean you won't get altitude sickness. It all depends on your current physical condition! I was getting more and more anxious reading guides before I left, but in reality, I felt basically fine the whole way! My lips just turned slightly purple after a long time! ⚠️ Super important reminder If you feel unwell, you must use oxygen immediately. Do not try to tough it out, and don't wait for altitude sickness symptoms to worsen before taking action. After arriving in Tibet, don't rush around like you would on the plains. Be sure to slow down your travel pace, ensure you get plenty of rest daily, and avoid strenuous exercise and staying up late. Most people adapt to the plateau environment in about three days. 💡 A comprehensive guide to taking the Qinghai-Tibet Railway ▪️ Direct route options (best for those who prefer convenience) North China → Depart from Beijing; Yangtze River Delta → Depart from Shanghai; Guangdong/Guangxi → Depart from Guangzhou; Sichuan/Chongqing → Depart from Chongqing/Chengdu All direct trains switch to the exclusive Tibet-bound train at Xining Station. For friends from Northeast China: Take a train from Shenyang to Xining, then transfer to the Xining-Lhasa train ▪️ Ultimate sightseeing option (for experiencing only the Qinghai-Tibet line) Fly to Xining/Lanzhou at a low price, then transfer to the train upon arrival 👍🏻 Most recommended: Fly directly to Lhasa, and take the train on the return trip!! Flights to Tibet are cheap, while flights out of Tibet are extremely expensive. Traveling in reverse offers the best value ▪️ Booking tips 1. Be sure to book your tickets 15 days in advance! They sell out in seconds during peak season 2. To see the full scenery: Choose a night departure from Xining or a morning departure from Lhasa to unlock the full view of the scenery during the day 3. For sleepers, prioritize the Y-prefix tourist trains! The sightseeing experience is excellent both ways 👉🏻 Because train numbers and schedules change frequently with the seasons, I won't recommend specific trains, but you can easily look up the approximate times.

Youth is priceless, train ride straight to Lhasa❗️ Bucket list checked✅, definitely worth the trip 📸 Ultimate sightseeing schedule The best scenery after Golmud Station is all during the day, so scenery lovers, don't oversleep! 🕒 Around 07:30 | Hoh Xil Nature Reserve: Open your eyes to a blockbuster view! If you're super lucky, you might spot Tibetan antelopes and Tibetan wild donkeys strolling leisurely by the tracks 🦌 🕒 Around 09:40 | Tuotuo River: The source of the Yangtze River. Look to the left of the train for magnificent water views 🌊 🕒 Around 11:50 | Tanggula Pass: The highest point of the entire journey. Remember to take a photo with the snow-capped mountains outside the window 🏔️ 🕒 Around 13:30 | Cona Lake: A sapphire on the right side of the train! It's super close to the lake surface, with water birds flying by—it's breathtaking 💎 🕒 Around 14:30 | Northern Tibet Grassland: A vast painting on the right side of the train! Endless views with herds of cattle and sheep 🕒 Around 16:00 | Nyainqêntanglha Mountains: Continuous snow-capped peaks accompany you along the way. Seeing them means Lhasa is just ahead—the sense of awe is off the charts 🏔️

#epictravelmoments 🪞 Okay travel crew, I need to talk about a place that broke my brain in the best way possible.Sisuo Lake — and before you Google it frantically, no, it's not on every "Top 10 China" list. That's exactly why it wrecked me. I was deep in Tibet, doing this insane overland route through Nagqu that nobody recommended because nobody even knows about it. My driver, this grizzled Tibetan dude named Tenzin, kept saying "one more hour" for like three hours. I was ready to mutiny. Then we crested this hill and — I swear on everything — the world just stopped. There it was. Sisuo Lake. Perfectly still. Not a single ripple. The water was so calm it was literally mirroring the sky like someone had glued two worlds together. Mountains, clouds, everything doubled. I stood there with my mouth open like an idiot for a solid five minutes. Tenzin just lit a cigarette, leaned against the truck, and said, "You see? I told you." Yeah, Tenzin. You did. Here's why this was my epic travel moment — it wasn't dramatic. There were no fireworks, no Instagram-famous viewpoint. It was just… silence. Real, bone-deep silence. I sat on the shore, took off my shoes, and dipped my feet in water so cold it made me gasp. Then I just sat there. Twenty minutes. Thirty. An hour? I honestly lost track. At some point a yak wandered over and stood next to me like we were old buddies watching the sunset together. No agenda. No itinerary. Just existence. The funniest part? I tried to take a photo that captured how I felt, and every single shot looked flat. My phone could not handle this lake's energy. I finally just put it away and thought, "Some moments you just have to keep in your head." Later that night at a roadside guesthouse, I met a German cyclist who'd also stumbled onto Sisuo by accident — his GPS had glitched and sent him off-route. We laughed about how the best places find YOU when you stop trying so hard. Question for you all: Have you ever had a moment where your phone failed you but your memory didn't? What's a place you visited that you physically could NOT capture in a photo — and why did it hit so hard? Drop your stories. I'm genuinely curious. 🏔️🪞 #epictravelmoments #SisuoLake #TibetTravel #Nagqu #HiddenGems #SlowTravel #OffTheBeatenPath

#easytravelpost Wae Rebo is a Manggarai village of 7 conical mbaru niang huts at 1,200 m, 4.5 km walk from the Denge trailhead (ojek IDR 50k to the start, then 2–3 hrs up, 600–750 m gain). Since 1 May 2026 you must register and pay at the Wae Rebo TIC in Dusun Kombo before walking—contribution IDR 200–350k/person (covers hut bed + dinner + breakfast), day visit IDR 200k. No cards in the village; carry IDR 500k small notes. The mossy cliff is the last 1 km before the village: Hymenophyllum filmy fern on every tree fern (Cyathea), Dendroligotrichum hanging from the branches, and the cloud forest drips even in August dry—Flores karst holds moisture. I arrived 16:30 (cutoff for overnight is 16:00, day 12:00), slept in the outer ring of a mbaru niang (shared floor, IDR 350k pp), woke at 05:00 to mist burning off the cone roofs. No electricity, headlamp essential, 15°C at night. Mistake: I came in Feb and the clay track to Denge was impassable—Jun–Sep only. Another: I skipped the TIC and tried to pay in the village—they turned me back down the hill; register first. Would you trek Wae Rebo from Denge for the cloud-forest moss and overnight in a mbaru niang, or do it as a day walk and sleep in Ruteng instead?

[First Solo Trip Experience] Heading to Tibet, My Dream List! Day 3-4: Woke up on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway and arrived at #Kekexili! Saw wild Tibetan antelopes, donkeys, horses, rabbits, and even foxes. Along the way, saw the #Tuotuo River, the source of the Three Rivers. Crossed into Tibet and arrived at #TanggulaMountains and #NagquGrassland. After a 20-hour journey, finally arrived in Lhasa. The next day, climbed the #PotalaPalace, almost to the point of exhaustion, and also visited the #JokhangTemple, the most sacred temple in Tibetan Buddhism. Witnessed the stupas of the Dalai Lamas and the life-size statue of the twelve-year-old Buddha. These are truly places I dream of visiting. Thankfully, I haven't experienced altitude sickness these past few days. Tomorrow, I'm heading towards Mount Everest, the world's highest peak!

Yes, that's clear. Originally built in 1777 (the 42nd year of the Qianlong Emperor's reign), the original pavilions were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. The current buildings were rebuilt in May 1988, taking four years to complete. The Milarepa Pavilion is a Buddhist pavilion built to commemorate Milarepa. It is the representative monastery of the Kagyu school (White Sect) of Tibetan Buddhism in the Amdo Tibetan region. You can get there by taking a bus to Hezuo City; navigation will take you there. The parking lot is quite large, charged by the hour, and there are free toilets. The entrance fee to the pavilion is 20 yuan per person.

Who says Nagqu is only about high altitude and desolation? You’ll only understand after visiting. The vastness and purity of this part of the northern Tibetan Plateau will move your soul and completely erase any thought of leaving!✨ Highlights: The sky feels within reach, lakes scattered like gems, and endless grasslands. This is Tibet’s "north gate," featuring stunning natural scenery and authentic nomadic culture, far from the noise, refreshing your eyes. Must-see: · Sapushan mountain: The pyramid-shaped peak is truly unique! Glaciers stretch down to the ice lake, creating breathtaking views.💎 · Cuona lake: Known as the "heavenly lake" by the Qinghai-Tibet railway, its water color shifts with the light, unbelievably beautiful. · Qiangtang grassland: One of China’s five major pastures, lush and green in summer with herds of cattle and sheep, offering endless scenery. Must-try: · Air-dried yak meat: A northern Tibetan specialty, firm and chewy, essential for energy replenishment.🥩 · Butter tea: Rich and savory, one cup warms you up instantly against the highland chill. · Tsampa: Roasted barley flour shaped into balls, paired with butter tea for an authentic nomad staple. · Tibetan yogurt: Thick and creamy with a balanced sweet and sour taste, perfect for cutting through richness. Tips: 1. Nagqu averages over 4,500 meters in altitude. Prepare well for altitude sickness, move slowly, and bring medication. 2. The climate is dry with intense UV rays! Be sure to bring sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses, and a hat.☀️ 3. The temperature difference between day and night is huge. Even in summer, a down jacket or windbreaker is a must in your luggage. 4. Many natural sites have rough roads. It’s best to choose an off-road vehicle and hire a local driver familiar with the terrain. 5. Some areas require a border pass. Confirm your itinerary and get the pass in advance at your registered residence. The beauty of Nagqu requires you to slow down and truly feel it. There are no crowds here, only majestic mountains and the purest sky. When you stand before Sapushan mountain or watch the sunset over Qiangtang grassland, you’ll realize every long journey was worth it.🚗💨

Before leaving, I saw countless complaints saying that in midsummer, the clouds in western Sichuan are thick and the snow-capped mountains are rarely visible. The usual Zheduo Mountain loop is congested year-round. Popular viewpoints are overcrowded. Most of the trip is spent on the road—either rushing or dealing with altitude sickness—leaving you physically and mentally exhausted 🏔. I planned to avoid the popular southern route, take a gradual low-altitude approach, and skip the trendy spots to explore the hidden wonders and pristine glacial lakes of Aba. After staying three days, I realized that the true vastness of western Sichuan isn’t in the paid checkpoints but in the uninhabited stone forests, wild lakes, and the isolated Ando Tibetan region. Here, midsummer temperatures hover around 15–16°C. Wildflowers blanket the meadows, sacred mountains are shrouded in morning mist, afternoon sun is blocked by dense canyon forests, and at night, the vast wilderness is pitch dark with the Milky Way hanging over the snowy peaks. This personally tested three-day off-the-beaten-path guide helps you avoid traffic and commercialization, unlocking the cold, hidden secrets of western Sichuan ✨ 1️⃣ Three-day itinerary and real experiences 📸 Day 1: Off-peak entry to Bipeng Valley + Menghuo Valley red stone secret spot + blue river valley stroll 🌿 Don’t head straight to Siguniang Mountain. Enter Bipeng Valley at 7 AM and take the deep trail on the left side of the park to avoid crowds on the main boardwalk. No intense hiking is needed here. The sightseeing bus takes you directly to the cluster of lakes. The glacial waters are crystal clear and emerald green, surrounded by layers of spruce trees. The mountain is cool and windless year-round. No need to summit; stroll slowly along the gentle wooden boardwalk and get close to the glacial scree. The midday plateau sun is harsh. Rest at your guesthouse and avoid going out. At 4 PM, head to the free Menghuo Valley, where red moss-covered stones fill the valley. Streams run through the pristine forest, and there are almost no tourists. Walking through the valley, you’ll see untouched wilderness everywhere. At sunset, the light filters through the trees, creating a natural, atmospheric scene. For dinner, skip the park restaurants and go to Putou town. A serving of spicy, soft potato cakes costs 28 yuan; wild mushroom stewed chicken is 42 yuan, fresh and rich. Pair it with a pot of butter tea to ease altitude discomfort 🍲. Check-in spots: uninhabited lakes upstream in Bipeng Valley, stretches of red stones in the valley, forest paths halfway up the mountain. Wear dark, simple outdoor clothing 👗 to blend with the gray-white stones and green forest. Be sure to wear slip-resistant flat shoes for the rocky paths. Day 2: Lianbaoyeze Zhaga’er Lake + light hike on Ando Tibetan pasture 🏔️ Completely avoid the crowded Xinduqiao Tagong grasslands. Spend the whole day at Lianbaoyeze on the Sichuan-Gansu border. The 120 yuan ticket is valid for three days. This is the sacred mountain area of the Ando Tibetan region. Sharp gray-white stone peaks pierce the sky, very different from the gentle meadows of western Sichuan. The endpoint, Zhaga’er Lake, is surrounded by glacial peaks. The lake is deep blue and serene. The lakeside trail is gently sloped, so you don’t have to climb mountains to face the entire Kunlun mountain range. Have lunch at a Tibetan family guesthouse at the mountain base. A bowl of yak yogurt porridge costs 32 yuan, sweet and refreshing. In the afternoon, avoid the strong sun and drive to nearby natural pastures. There are no fences or fees. Wildflowers cover the ground, and cattle and sheep roam freely. Sit on the hillside, enjoy the breeze, and gaze at the endless mountains. At sunset, the rock faces turn a fiery gold. Wear durable hiking boots 🥾 because the lakeside rocks are sharp and can easily cut you. The high-altitude UV rays penetrate clouds, so a hat and arm sleeves are essential. The mountain pass is windy year-round, so carry a windbreaker. Day 3: Shenzuo ancient village + Charlie Monastery + late-night stargazing on the outskirts 🌌 On the last day, leave the developed scenic areas and visit Shenzuo Village, known as the home of immortals. The village nestles among forests and rivers. Traditional wooden Tibetan houses scatter among barley fields. There are no shops or inns. Locals still herd and farm, and the village is open to the public for free. Walk along the stream at the village entrance, surrounded by dense forest and moist air—a rare mild spot in western Sichuan. In the afternoon, visit Charlie Monastery nearby. This ancient Tibetan temple has few visitors. The main hall’s golden roof is simple and solemn. Ancient trees tower in the courtyard, allowing you to quietly appreciate Tibetan Buddhist culture. At night, far from towns, the wilderness has no light pollution. Look up to see the full Milky Way and countless stars filling the sky. Temperatures drop sharply after dark, so change into thick pants 👖 to prevent getting cold. 2️⃣ Convenient travel tips 🚗 Drive from Chengdu along the Aba northern route to avoid Zheduo Mountain traffic jams. Most roads are accessible by sedan. Official parking lots charge 10 yuan per day. Driving on grasslands is strictly prohibited. For the less-traveled valleys, an SUV is recommended. Don’t drive recklessly on unnamed wild roads. Distances between Aba attractions are long, and there is no public transport. Renting a car or self-driving is the only option. The best route is Bipeng Valley → Lianbaoyeze → Shenzuo Village, with a gradual altitude increase to minimize altitude sickness. Follow the schedule of entering the mountains early morning, resting at noon, and chasing the light in the evening. This avoids strong sunlight and greatly increases the chance of seeing the sacred mountains. Most pastures, ancient villages, and valleys are free to visit, so no need to buy scenic area packages. 3️⃣ Local accommodation recommendations 🏡 Aba Shenzuo Tibetan wooden courtyard 📍 Location: inside Shenzuo Village, Aba, away from main roads 💰 Average price in July–August: 230–350 yuan per night (includes Tibetan farmhouse breakfast) ✨ Highlights: Hidden at the forest’s edge, the courtyard opens directly to the valley, completely isolated from traffic noise. The old rammed earth Tibetan house walls are thick, keeping the room cool and dry during the day and warm at night without dryness or oxygen shortage. The hosts are Ando Tibetans who share weather updates for the sacred mountains and recommend little-known hiking trails. Breakfast includes freshly boiled yak milk and barley cakes. It’s a 30-minute drive to Lianbaoyeze, offering much better value than the popular hotels at the scenic area entrance. 4️⃣ Practical travel tips ⚠️ Clothing: The plateau has four seasons in one day. Layering is the safest approach. Wear short sleeves with sun protection clothing, and always carry a windbreaker. Never wear slippers on rocky or dirt paths. There are many ticks and small flying insects in the meadows, so bring strong insect repellent. Apply high-SPF sunscreen even on cloudy days. Avoid pitfalls: ❌ Don’t join cheap western Sichuan loop tours—they’re crowded and superficial. ❌ Don’t buy cordyceps or Tibetan silver at scenic area entrances; prices are better at county markets. ❌ Don’t climb fences to enter undeveloped wild mountains; it’s easy to get lost in uninhabited areas. ❌ Don’t approach private pastures without permission. Travel tips: The best time to view sacred mountains is before 10 AM; clouds often cover peaks in the afternoon. Don’t bathe or walk fast when you first arrive at high altitude; acclimate gradually. Visit Lianbaoyeze in the afternoon for the best angled light to capture the stone mountains’ stark beauty. Avoid valleys after rain due to rockfall risk. Personal reflections & summary 💚 After leaving this land, the most unforgettable moments weren’t the popular photo spots but the quiet glacial lakes at the sacred mountain’s base, the mountain breeze through the red stone valley forest, the smoke from Tibetan villages drifting into the woods, and the star-filled sky over the wilderness at night. Before the trip, I thought western Sichuan was only gentle grasslands. Only after entering Aba did I realize it has both Jiangnan-like forests and valleys and the breathtaking Kunlun sacred mountains. It’s not overly commercialized. Nomads still tend their pastures, and ancient temples and villages retain their original appearance. You don’t need to chase check-in routes or deal with traffic and crowds. Moving slowly through valleys and wilderness lets you understand the wildness and solemnity hidden in the northern route of western Sichuan. July and August in Aba are the coolest months on the plateau. This personally tested guide is for those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle 🌟. Pick a sunny day and head to this hidden paradise in northern Sichuan.

Monks clap their hands and stomp their feet, passionately debating Buddhist teachings in Tibetan, their exaggerated movements creating a lively atmosphere. The rooftop observation deck offers a distant view of the Potala Palace; less crowded and better for photos. Afternoon | Souvenir Shopping + Return Trip · What to Buy: Yak jerky (try before you buy), Tibetan incense (famous from Mindroling Monastery), prayer wheel stickers, Thangka paintings (expensive but exquisite), saffron, black goji berries. · Return Transportation: Same as the train option on Day 1, or return by plane (direct flight from Lhasa Gonggar Airport/via Chengdu or Xi'an to Baotou). 💰 Budget Reference (Single Person, Excluding Round-Trip Transportation) Item | Economy | Comfort Accommodation (4 nights) | 600-800 RMB (Youth Hostel/Standard Room) | 1200-2000 RMB (Hotel with Oxygen Supply and Scenic View) Entrance Fees | Approx. 400 RMB (Potent Palace + Jokhang Temple + Sera Monastery) | Approx. 500 RMB (Ghana Lake/Yamdrok Lake Day Trip) Food | 300 RMB (Mainly Tibetan Noodles + Sweet Tea + Rice Bowls) | 600 RMB (Several Authentic Tibetan Meals/Hot Pot) City Transportation | 100 RMB (Bus + Walking) | 200 RMB (Taxi + Chartered/Shared Car) Total | Approx. 1400-1600 RMB | Approx. 2500-3300 RMB Adding the round-trip hard sleeper train ticket from Baotou to Lhasa (approx. 1600-1800 RMB), the total budget is approximately 3000-5000 RMB. ⚠️ Final Reminders (Based on Hard-Earned Experience) 1. Regarding Altitude Sickness: Don't believe the saying "the healthier you are, the worse your altitude sickness will be." Relax, don't be tense, and don't push yourself. If you experience severe headaches, vomiting, or difficulty breathing, go to the hospital. Oxygen therapy at Lhasa People's Hospital is inexpensive. 2. Sun Protection and Moisturizing: Lhasa isn't called the "City of Sunshine" for nothing. SPF50+ sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and lip balm are essential. I brought one lip balm, which lasted three days. 3. Respecting Customs: Turn prayer wheels clockwise, remove your hat and sunglasses when entering temples, don't point at Buddha statues, and don't photograph pilgrims prostrating themselves. 4. Documents: Carry your ID card with you at all times; you'll need it to enter squares and stroll through Barkhor Street. A border permit isn't necessary if you're only visiting the Lhasa area; it's only required for trips to Mount Everest and Ali. 5. Mindset: Don't overschedule your itinerary. Lhasa's charm lies in its "slow" pace. Spending an afternoon in a teahouse, learning a few phrases of "Tashi Delek" from a Tibetan woman, exchanging stories with fellow travelers—these are more unforgettable than visiting tourist attractions. "Staying in the Potala Palace, wandering the streets of Lhasa," from Baotou to Lhasa, five days and four nights, a round trip of 6,000 kilometers. This journey may be a bit rushed, but once you set foot on that land, you'll feel it was all worthwhile. Let's go, while we still have dreams, while we still have distant horizons.

Complete travel guide to the Tanggula Mountains 1. Basic geographical overview Tanggula means "mountain on the plateau" in Tibetan and is called "the mountain the eagle cannot fly over" in Mongolian. It stretches across the heart of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, forming the natural border between Qinghai and Tibet. It extends nearly 1,000 kilometers east to west, with an average elevation of 5,500–6,000 meters, known as the backbone of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. 1. Main peak: Geladandong Peak at 6,621 meters. The Yangtze River’s true source, the Tuotuo River, originates at the foot of the Jianggendiru Glacier, which is a permanent glacier and part of the Sanjiangyuan core protected area. 2. Key landmark: Tanggula Pass at 5,231 meters elevation, the highest point on both the Qinghai-Tibet Highway G109 and the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, marking the provincial boundary. It is open free of charge 24/7. 3. Water system significance: The source of the Yangtze, Lancang, and Nu Rivers, dividing the Pacific and Indian Ocean watersheds. Permafrost is widespread, and the climate is harsh year-round, with sudden snowstorms and hail even in summer. 2. Main attractions 1. Tanggula Pass The iconic altitude stone monument is draped with colorful prayer flags. The open view offers distant snow-capped mountains. Oxygen is thin here, so it is recommended to stay less than 30 minutes. Running or jumping is prohibited to avoid worsening altitude sickness. The surrounding grasslands belong to the northern Tibetan pastoral area, blooming with wildflowers in summer and home to herds of yaks and sheep. 2. Geladandong Glacier A secret source of the Yangtze River, featuring massive glacier tongues, ice caves, and ice towers. It is within the Sanjiangyuan control area. Visitors must register in advance and hire a local guide. Daily visitor limits apply. It is inaccessible by car and ideal for experienced outdoor enthusiasts to admire and photograph from a distance. 3. Bujagangri Glacier Group The core glacier landscape in the eastern section of the Tanggula Mountains, with giant icefalls and alpine lakes connected. It is rarely visited, with frequent wildlife sightings, making it a hidden gem for photographers. 4. Ecological scenery along the way The northern side borders the uninhabited Hoh Xil area, where Tibetan antelope, wild donkeys, and wild yaks often appear. The landscape unfolds with alpine meadows, permafrost wastelands, wetlands, and lakes. The railway and highway run parallel, offering unique highland road photography spots. 3. Two travel options 1. Train (best for beginners, altitude sickness friendly) Direct trains from Xining to Lhasa (Z6811, Z165) have oxygen supplied throughout the carriages. Between 5 and 7 AM, the train crosses Tanggula Pass, offering a window view of the sunrise over snow peaks. No driving is required, making it the most comfortable option without dealing with permafrost roads or snowstorms. 2. Self-drive or charter along Qinghai-Tibet Highway G109 Classic loop: Golmud—Tuotuo River—Tanggula Pass—Anduo—Nagqu Distance: About 600 km from Golmud to the pass, recommended to split into 2 days. Night driving is prohibited. Vehicle: Four-wheel-drive SUVs are preferred. Regular sedans risk bottoming out on permafrost roads. Supplies: Yanshiping and Tuotuo River towns offer only basic food and lodging. Choose hotels with oxygen rooms for accommodation. 4. Best travel time Peak season June–September: Temperatures range from 0 to 15°C. Roads are clear, and grasslands are lush, making it the ideal window for most travelers. Rainy season in July and August requires caution for sudden rain, snow, and carry snow chains. Comfortable shoulder season May and October: Fewer tourists, higher chance of sunny days, and excellent lighting for snow mountain photography. Avoid November–March: Heavy snow often closes the entire route, with permanent ice on roads. Self-driving is not recommended. 5. Plateau safety and essentials Altitude sickness prevention 1. Take Rhodiola one week before departure. Upon arrival at high altitude, limit movement, avoid bathing, alcohol, and overeating. 2. Each person should carry at least 3 oxygen canisters. Use oxygen immediately if experiencing headache or fatigue, combined with ibuprofen for pain relief. If vomiting or chest tightness persists, descend immediately to lower-altitude towns like Anduo or Nagqu for medical care. Essential gear All-season shell jacket, fleece liner, anti-slip hiking boots, sunglasses (to prevent snow blindness), warm hat, heat packs, insulated bottle. In the vehicle, carry antifreeze windshield fluid, tow rope, and satellite phone as there is no stable mobile signal in the mountains. Warnings 1. Parking is prohibited on permafrost road sections at the pass. Violations may be fined by road authorities. 2. Snow lotus and cordyceps sold roadside are often fake. Do not buy at high prices. 3. The Sanjiangyuan protected area strictly forbids unauthorized off-roading, chasing wildlife, or littering. Violations will be punished. 6. Nearby itinerary connections 1. Main Qinghai-Tibet route: Xining → Qinghai Lake → Hoh Xil → Tanggula Mountains → Namtso Lake → Lhasa 2. Lesser-known loop: Yushu Zaduo → Bujagangri Glacier → Eastern Tanggula → Nagqu 3. Food and lodging specialties: Anduo yak meat hotpot, butter tea, highland potatoes with lamb. Butter tea helps relieve dryness and discomfort at high altitude. Additional distinction: Tanggula Mountains vs. Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains These are not the same mountain range. Tanggula is the Qinghai-Tibet border mountain and source of the three rivers. Nyenchen Tanglha is located north of Lhasa, adjacent to Namtso Lake, part of the central Tibetan snow mountain range. Their routes and landscapes are completely separate. Do not confuse them when planning your trip.

Day 1 Glacier First Encounter Route Depart from Shuanghu County in the morning, complete the official crossing procedures in advance, and follow the local licensed guide's rugged convoy into the no-man's land, heading straight to Purogongri Glacier. Stand at the foot of the glacier tongue of the Third Pole of the world, touch the blue ice texture formed over millions of years, see ice caves and ice towers shimmering with a faint blue glow under the sunlight. Do not stray from the trail throughout the 3.5-hour tour. At noon, have a warm yak meat soup at the herders' supply point on the glacier outskirts to quickly replenish energy consumed at high altitude, costing about 50 RMB per person. In the afternoon, move to Linggecuo Lake, slowly drive along the gravel road by the lakeshore, admire the clear blue lake merging with the distant glacier. The lake surface has no extra tourists, only traces left by wild birds skimming the water. Sit on the gentle slope by the lake and daydream, immersing yourself in the ultimate tranquility of the no-man's land for 2.5 hours. Return to Shuanghu County in the evening to stay at an oxygen-supplied hotel. Choose a light yak soup hotpot for dinner and go to bed early to save energy for the long-distance crossing the next day. Day 2 No-Man's Land Wilderness Roaming Route Wake up early at dawn, the convoy officially enters the core section of the Changtang no-man's land. Follow the guide's predetermined route, stopping anytime to encounter plateau wildlife such as Tibetan antelope, wild donkeys, and wild yaks. See the boundless wilderness stretching to the horizon, with clouds so low it feels like you can touch them. Do not stray from the route during the 4-hour tour. At noon, share pre-prepared hot meals with teammates at the designated safe stop in the no-man's land, quickly replenishing calories, costing about 40 RMB per person. In the afternoon, drive to Duoge Cuo Ren, a giant lake over 400 square kilometers in northern Tibet. The lake water shows a gradient of Tiffany blue. Standing on the shore, you can see the silhouette of distant snow-capped mountains reflected on the lake surface. There are almost no signs of human activity, making it a true no-man's land. Spend 3 hours here. Return to Shuanghu County in the evening to rest. No wild camping is arranged throughout the trip to minimize the risks of high-altitude no-man's land at night. Day 3 Secret Lake View Finale Route Sleep in naturally in the morning, then the convoy sets off for Meima Cuo. Drive slowly along the gentle lakeshore slope, watching the strong color contrast between the red mountains and the blue-green lake. This is a rare, little-known secret spot in northern Tibet, with almost no tourists visiting. You can easily take unique wilderness photos here. Spend 3 hours exploring. At noon, have freshly cooked hand-pulled meat at a herders' supply point on the return route, costing about 45 RMB per person. In the afternoon, return safely to Shuanghu County along the safe route, concluding the entire trip.

"Drunk, I forget the sky reflected in the water; my boat, laden with sweet dreams, rests upon the Milky Way." I've always been captivated by the serene beauty of a starry night, yet only when gazing at the cosmos through a lens did I realize the majestic galaxy in poetry is no mere illusion, but a vast, dazzling wonder far beyond imagination. While the naked eye catches only faint, scattered glimmers, the lens unveils the deeply hidden masterpieces of the universe. Billions of stars are strewn across the pitch-black celestial vault, creating a mesmerizing interplay of light and shadow with breathtaking depth. Ethereal nebulae drift like mist over a jade palace or unfurl like sunset clouds, while spiral galaxies slowly turn, tracing romantic arcs that span across light-years. Every sliver of starlight has journeyed through eons of time and space to reach our world, carrying the gentle serenity from the dawn of the universe. Before this boundless sea of stars, the exhausting trivialities of daily life and the tangled anxieties of the heart fade into nothingness like fleeting clouds. Immersed in the pure, luminous glow filling the sky, my mind finds peace. I soak in the tranquil grace of the world and marvel at the boundless grandeur of the cosmos. For this silent interstellar voyage, there is no need to travel far to majestic mountains or seas. Simply by observing the stars with an open heart and gazing into the heavens through a lens, you can embrace this dazzling spectacle. Cradled by the vast Milky Way, you can preserve a pure, undisturbed sanctuary within your soul.

The starry sky is a vessel of time and a sweeping canvas of the cosmos. Through the lens of a telescope on our journey, this celestial world allows us to transcend time and space, grasping both the boundless expanse of the universe and the fleeting nature of human life. The starlight that meets our eyes is the physical trace of a journey across countless light-years. Every glimmer carries the weight of eons, and every star cluster has witnessed the ever-changing tides of our world. Caught up in the daily grind, we rarely comprehend the sheer scale of the cosmos. We easily mistake temporary struggles for permanent states, and fleeting regrets for final endings. Yet, when we gaze at the stars through a telescope, we truly feel the infinity of space and the eternal presence of the galaxy. The interstellar realm seen through the lens transcends the ages, standing still amidst the flow of time. It remains untouched by the rise and fall of humanity, unshaken by worldly shifts. In stark contrast, our daily hustle and momentary gains or losses seem incredibly trivial. This journey beneath the stars frees us from the constraints of the everyday, inviting us to view our lives through the profound lens of the cosmos. Unbound by current troubles and immediate worries, we learn to let go of superficial vanity, cherish our moments, and live with boundless clarity and brilliance in our limited time on Earth.

When the city's neon lights shatter the starlight, when the cacophony of alarm clocks disturbs the morning light, do you, like me, sometimes yearn desperately for a patch of blue sky within reach on a weary night? Then go to Tibet. There, there are no KPIs to urge you on, no traffic lights to annoy you, only the wind you can reach out and embrace, and the sunlight that can soften your heart ☁️. Slowly sway along the Qinghai-Tibet Highway, outside the car window stretches a vast expanse of green grassland to the horizon, black yaks like scattered chess pieces, leisurely munching on the grass, even the rhythm of their tails swaying is full of tranquility. When passing Lake Cuona, be sure to stop and wait for a gust of wind; the azure lake water is rippling with delicate light, and the snow-capped Nyainqêntanglha Mountains in the distance shimmer with silver light. At that moment, you will suddenly understand what it means to "forget the troubles of the first half of your life at a glance." Walking into Barkhor Street in Lhasa, the gurgling sound of prayer wheels drifts on the wind. An elderly woman in a Tibetan robe walks slowly, turning her wheel, while prayer flags flutter wildly in the wind, carrying the Tibetan people's prayers for life to the sacred mountains and lakes. Find a teahouse at the corner of an alley, order a pot of five-yuan sweet tea, bask in the warm sun, and watch the street scene. The aroma of yak butter mingles with the sweetness of milk tea, filling the air, making even time slow down. In the evening, go to Potala Palace Square to watch the sunset paint the golden roof of the White Palace a gentle orange. The evening breeze carries the incense smoke from Jokhang Temple; take a breath, and you'll find a sense of peace. If you feel your soul needs a purer cleansing, then go to Namtso Lake. Driving up the winding mountain road, the clouds outside the car window grow lower and lower, as if you could reach out and pluck a piece of cotton. Standing on the shore of Namtso Lake, before me lay the jewel-like blue waters, with the distant Nyainqêntanglha Mountains stretching into the distance. A breeze swept across the lake, carrying the coolness of the snow-capped peaks. In that moment, all the noise was filtered out, leaving only the sound of my heartbeat and the flowing water. It felt as if my entire soul had been cleansed by the lake, leaving me clear and light. Only upon leaving did I realize that the most moving aspect of Tibet is never the tourist attractions, but rather the sudden realization of my own insignificance when I stand amidst the vastness of nature. Those long-held worries are nothing more than a tiny speck of dust in the wind. Here, the mountains are silent, the lakes are tranquil, and even the smiles of the Tibetan people radiate unadorned sincerity. Once you come, your heart will be softened by this land, and you'll return home refreshed. 💙 While the sun shines brightly, set off to Tibet to find yourself.

Kangding truly hides so many surprises! Stop crowding the popular spots; Cuona Lake on Gaersi Mountain in Xinduqiao is my personal hidden treasure. It’s not a fenced-off scenic area. Just search for “Gaersi Sacred Mountain/Cuona Lake (Gaersi Mountain)” on your navigation app. It’s near the Gongga Dressing Table Viewing Platform, part of Zhusan Township’s wild wetlands. At about 4,450 meters above sea level, it’s a typical highland glacial lake. The water is all melted snow from the mountains. In winter, the blue ice that forms is as clear and gem-like as a jewel, while in summer, the water is so clear it reflects the Gongga peaks perfectly. There are no entrance fees or commercial facilities here; you have to explore on your own. Four-wheel-drive vehicles can drive right up, but for two-wheel-drive cars, it’s best to park at the photovoltaic power station and hike 10 minutes to the lake. The wind is strong and the temperature difference is big, so be sure to bring warm clothes, sun protection, and altitude sickness remedies. Standing by the lake, the main peak of Gongga is right before your eyes. If you’re lucky, you can capture the golden sunlight on the mountain and the rolling sea of clouds. But remember, this pristine wild lake must be kept clean—don’t litter, and don’t venture too far on a bike into areas without signal. On rainy or snowy days, be sure to bring anti-skid chains. Safety first.
