Arkadi Monastery 🇬🇷
#summerdestinations
During my summer vacation in Crete, I visited the Arkadi Monastery, and it was a truly memorable experience. Located about 25 km southeast of Rethymno, the monastery has an entrance fee of €3, which is a small price to pay for such a rich historical experience.
The monastery, with its beautiful Venetian architecture, is not only visually stunning but also deeply significant in Crete’s history, particularly during the 1866 uprising against the Ottomans. The serene courtyard, ancient olive trees, and well-preserved church create a peaceful atmosphere, but the ossuary, holding the remains of those who sacrificed their lives, is a sobering reminder of the past.
Nearby, you can explore the charming village of Margarites, known for its pottery, or enjoy the scenic drive back to Rethymno. Arkadi Monastery is a must-visit for anyone interested in history, culture, or just a beautiful, reflective space. 🌿⛪️

Arkadi Monastery is located near the village Amnatos, 23 kilometers southeast of Rethymno. It is located at an altitude of more than 500 meters on the northwestern slope of Mountain Ida. This is one of the oldest Orthodox monasteries in Crete island. In this monastery, people desperately fought to the death against the superior forces of the Turks.
Around the monastery there are several picturesque chapels and from there starts the beautiful Arkadi gorge.
