If Tokyo is the city that never sleeps, Kamakura is the town that makes everything slow down. This small coastal town is only about an hour away from Tokyo, but it feels like stepping into another world. It boasts ancient temples, shrines hidden amidst bamboo forests, narrow streets, cozy coffee shops, and beaches with gentle rolling waves all day long. It's no surprise that many consider Kamakura to be one of Japan's best weekend getaway destinations. ⸻ 🌅 Morning: A Stroll Through History Start your first morning at Kotoku-in, the temple housing the Great Buddha of Kamakura, a massive bronze statue that is over 750 years old. Mornings are usually less crowded, and the soft sunlight creates a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for admiring the details of the statue and taking beautiful photos. Next, stop by Hase-dera Temple, an ancient temple situated on a hill. Inside, you'll find a Japanese garden, seasonal flowers, and a stunning ocean view, which is especially breathtaking during the hydrangea blooming season or autumn foliage. 📍 Recommended time: 08:00 AM – 11:00 AM ⸻ 🚋 Afternoon: Ride a Retro Train and Explore the Seaside Town One of Kamakura's main charms is the Enoden Railway, a little green train that slowly runs along the coastline, connecting various towns. You can hop off at Kamakura Kokomae Station, a popular photo spot that many might recognize from the anime Slam Dunk, featuring the iconic railway crossing with the ocean in the background. Afterward, take a walk down Komachi Street, the town's main shopping street, filled with snack shops, cafes, green tea stores, and cute souvenirs. Don't forget to try the roasted Japanese sweet potatoes, fresh mochi, or matcha ice cream available at various stalls. 📍 Recommended time: 11:30 AM – 04:30 PM ⸻ 🌊 Evening: Seaside Sunset For the evening, we recommend heading to Yuigahama Beach. While this beach might not be as famous as those in Okinawa, its charm lies in its simplicity. People come here to hang out, surf, or just take a relaxing walk while enjoying the ocean breeze. On clear days, you can even spot Mount Fuji in the distance as the setting sun slowly paints the sky in shades of pinkish-orange. It's an incredibly beautiful and relaxing sight. End your day at a seafood restaurant or a small izakaya near Kamakura Station for a warm and friendly vibe. 📍 Recommended time: 05:00 PM – 08:00 PM ⸻ 🍣 Must-Try Delicacies Kamakura may be a small town, but its food scene is extraordinary. 🍣 Shirasu Don: A rice bowl topped with fresh whitebait, the town's famous signature dish. 🍵 Matcha and Homemade Japanese Sweets: Available at traditional historic tea houses. 🍠 Roasted Japanese Sweet Potatoes: Naturally sweet and incredibly fragrant. 🍡 Grilled Dango: The perfect walking snack for Komachi Street. ☕ Specialty Coffee: Cozy little cafes with warm decor can be found scattered all over town. ⸻ 🚃 Easy Access from Tokyo From Tokyo Station or Shinjuku Station: 🚆 JR Yokosuka Line: Takes about 1 hour. 🚆 JR Shonan-Shinjuku Line: Very convenient. 🚋 Getting around town is easy using the Enoden Railway or simply walking. Many attractions are close to each other, making it easy to cover everything in 2 days or even on a One Day Trip. ⸻ 💰 Estimated Budget For a 2 Days, 1 Night trip: 🏨 Accommodation: 3,000–7,000 THB/night 🍣 Food: 1,000–2,000 THB/day 🚆 Transportation: 800–1,500 THB 🎫 Temple & Attraction Entrance Fees: 300–800 THB 💵 Total Budget: Around 7,000–13,000 THB per person (excluding flights) ⸻ ✨ Kamakura isn't a city packed with grandiose landmarks, but rather a town that beautifully forces you to slow your pace. Riding a little train by the sea, wandering through quiet alleys, stopping for coffee at a small cafe, admiring the Great Buddha, and waiting for the sunset by the beach—these are the charms that make so many people fall in love with this town on their very first visit. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of Tokyo but don't want to travel too far, Kamakura is the perfect answer for a short holiday. 📌 Save this post and find time to live a slow life with A Weekend in Kamakura, a seaside town that is warm, simple, and full of charm in every season.

『Harazuru Grand Sky Hotel』 ✻ Room & Onsen Edition I visited Harazuru Onsen in Asakura City, Fukuoka Prefecture 🚗³₃ This is the hotel where I stayed. We stayed as a pair, but the room was a triple room. The spacious room offered a view of the Chikugo River from the window. The hot spring here is called "Bijin no Yu" (Beauty Bath)♨️ It features natural hot spring water with weak alkaline simple springs and simple sulfur springs. The large public bath had both an indoor bath and an open-air bath, though I couldn't take photos. Guests can also enjoy free private baths (reservation required). The private bath was a spacious hinoki (Japanese cypress) bath♨️ The room also had a unit bath for convenience. Amenities were provided in a washroom that resembled a kitchen. After the bath, I enjoyed coffee milk w The lobby on the first floor had plenty of books available. There were also karaoke and table tennis facilities. Nestled in the mountains, the lakeside dam is often a hidden gem for cherry blossom viewing. In Asakura City, Fukuoka Prefecture, "Minaike Lake" is home to the Terauchi Dam, which is also one of Japan's Top 100 Dam Lakes. Surrounding the dam, numerous cherry trees have been planted, especially near the observation deck and downstream plaza, making it a secret cherry blossom viewing spot known only to locals. Around Minaike Lake, you'll also find the water-themed amusement park "Amagi Water Culture Village," which is divided into an aquaculture area, a green sports area, and a waterfront leisure area. Here, you can enjoy water activities amidst the embrace of nature, creating a truly delightful experience! During cherry blossom season, the park hosts the "Cherry Blossom Lantern and Water Light Festival," where night cherry blossoms are illuminated by colorful water lanterns. The combination of weeping cherry blossoms and water birds creates an incredibly dreamy atmosphere!

#FukuokaSakura In Asakura City in Fukuoka Prefecture there is a mountain castle ruin called Akizuki. Not only does it have rich mountain and river scenery, it also retains the traditional streetscape. It was once prosperous and was known as the "Little Kyoto of Chikuzen." The 500-meter-long tree-lined road leading to the Akizuki Castle ruins is called the Akizuki Sugi-no-Bao. There are about 200 cherry trees on both sides of the road. The cherry blossom tunnel formed when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom is a stunning sight. It is quite healing to stroll through the streets where quaint buildings and cherry blossoms are intertwined. # At night, the street lights illuminate the cherry blossoms, creating a dreamy scene that is different from the daytime and is quite charming. #Fukuoka #Akizuki Castle Ruins

Amagi Park, a lesser-known cherry blossom spot in Fukuoka Prefecture, is located in Asakura City, southeast of Fukuoka. This expansive public park features a gourd-shaped Maruyama Pond at its center, surrounded by approximately 4,000 cherry trees, including Somei Yoshino, Yamazakura, and Yaezakura varieties. Every spring, the park transforms into a breathtaking sea of blossoms, earning it the nickname Maruyama Park among locals. The park boasts a rich natural environment with amenities such as fountains, a lawn plaza, a children's play area, and barbecue-friendly spaces, making it an ideal spot for weekend picnics and outings. During the cherry blossom season, the park hosts an illumination event from sunset until 10 PM, creating a dreamy and romantic night-time cherry blossom viewing experience.

This time, we will introduce the recommended inn "Taisenkaku" in Haratsuru Onsen, a hot spring resort with a natural and relaxing atmosphere in Fukuoka. 🌟 This inn is located in the hot spring resort of Asakura City, near Oita, and is the perfect place to relax on your days off. The hot springs here include the Jungle Bath, where the men's and women's baths switch every 6am, the Kappa Bath, the Miyabi Bath for women only, and a private family bath. The Jungle Bath has a slide, and the Miyabi Bath has a variety of shampoos and conditioners, which were interesting and unusual. In addition, the facilities were well-equipped, including milk and beer vending machines, a comfortable tatami hall with cushions and massage chairs, and a place to play table tennis. There was also a pool and a Japanese garden outside. We had dinner at a table where we could see the abundance of nature, such as the sunset and the river. We were very satisfied with the Japanese-style meals, such as sashimi, sukiyaki, sweetfish, and rice in a clay pot. Breakfast is served buffet style until 9am, and both Japanese and Western dishes were delicious and varied. The ingredients seem to be from Kyushu, mainly Fukuoka, and I was happy to see mentaiko. Nearby, you can cool off by visiting the famous "Triple Waterwheel" in Asakura City, or try out SUP or cormorant fishing at a discount, so please come and experience it🌟 📍Address: 20 Haki Shina, Asakura City, Fukuoka Prefecture, 838-1521 Check-in: 15:00~19:00 Check-out: ~10:00 #100's travel style #family trip #hotel with pool #nature and spectacular views #hot spring #trip #Fukuoka #Asakura

I used my day off work to refresh myself with cherry blossom viewing and a hot spring. I heard that the weeping cherry trees in Ukiha were in full bloom, so I went there. I had some Ukiha apple curry on the way there, and the apple pie was delicious! Unfortunately, it was cloudy that day, but the weeping cherry trees were in full bloom. After that, I drove to the ruins of Akizuki Castle and enjoyed the cherry blossom trees in the castle town. Since I had come all the way to Ukiha on the way back, I went to Kotohira Onsen in Hita. The alkaline hot spring made my skin smooth. 2,000 yen for a family bath is cheap, so I was glad. #cherryblossomviewing

I went to Akizuki to see the Hina dolls, which are on display on weekends until March 5th. The many beautiful Hina dolls are lined up on the stairs leading to the shrine at the Akizuki Castle ruins. Akizuki is Kyushu's Little Kyoto. The seasons of cherry blossoms and autumn leaves are also beautiful. Although the display is on weekends, they will also be on display on March 3rd, the Girl's Festival.

I went to Haratsuru Onsen in December. It was right around Christmas time, and we had a cold snap. It snowed quite a bit in Fukuoka, too. On the way back, I stopped by Hato Mameya (Pigeon Bean Shop). This long-established confectionery shop was founded in 1885. It's so popular, there's even a security guard on hand to direct parking on weekends. Although it's a pigeon pea shop, they also sell both Japanese and Western sweets. I bought their popular cream puffs and roll cakes that day. On the way back, I saw a snowy landscape. ⁣ 🗾 1910-3 Miyano, Asakura City, Fukuoka Prefecture 📍Hato Mameya ⁣ ⁣ #Fukuoka⁣ #Haratsuru⁣ #Snowscape

The reason I recommended it to a friend was definitely an unexpected surprise! Akizuki Onsen Cuisine Inn - Kiyoru-an is like Fukuoka's version of Little Kyoto, the hotel's architecture is very local, the decor and environment are even more beautiful. Excellent value for money, excellent food, very private spa experience privacy, very comfortable stay. The room type I stayed in was fuji, which was particularly comfortable and had a rock bath and two hot spring pools, perfect for those who prefer to enjoy the hot springs quietly. The service of the hotel is excellent, the staff is proactive and enthusiastic, and effectively addresses the needs of guests. Stay Tips: Remember to choose a rock bath room type, you can enjoy more hot spring experience; beautiful photos at night at night; hotel meals can not be missed, definitely gourmet choice. This year, I made sure to head over pretty early after they made the announcement - ̗̀📢. I even figured out how to get there by train and bus 🚃🚃³₃. The grapes are sourced from "Yukaibito" and they sparkle just like jewels~♡. They use three varieties: Shine Muscat, Queen Nina, and Seedless BK (if I remember correctly). It’s so interesting to taste the differences in skin thickness, texture, sweetness, and acidity ( *ฅ́˘ฅ̀*). The Shine Muscat has that perfect, firm snap when you bite into it 💭. Queen Nina, despite its look, has a lovely sweet-and-tangy profile ꒰ᐢ⸝⸝•༝•⸝⸝ᐢ꒱. The sharp, zesty lemon jelly acts as a wonderful accent 🍋. The panna cotta itself is rich with a deep milky flavor and a texture that just melts away 𓂃 𓈒𓏸❁⃘. A truly blissful grape panna cotta 🍇ˊ˗. I spent forever agonizing over which drink to pair it with. I went back and forth... but since I was having grapes, I eventually settled on the Costa Rica for its fruity notes ☕️. I used to avoid light roasts because I thought they were just sour, but this one didn't have any of that harsh acidity—it was just beautifully fruity ♩. It’s incredibly aromatic with a rich flavor at first, and as it cools, the fruitiness really starts to shine 🌱. Savoring the coffee's lingering aftertaste while nibbling on the crunchy Minagi sugar on the side... It’s been a while since my last visit to Tariru, and I’m so glad I went 🐣. ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈

#slowtraveling Asakura Museum of Sculpture (Chōkoku-no-mori, 7-18-10 Yanaka, 9:30–17:30, closed Mon, 500 yen cash adult) was the home-studio of Fumio Asakura (1883–1964). From Nippori 8-min walk. The rooftop is the secret: a small open terrace above the studio with a 1900s plaster Athena and a sightline to the Yanaka cemetery cypress line. I went 9:25 a.m. weekday: Nippori → museum at 9:30 open, paid 500 cash, walked the studio floor (his life masks of Taisho actors, eerie), then climbed to the rooftop alone—sat 20 min with the Athena and the cemetery green. A 130-yen vending barley tea (IC) from the Nippori Lawsons for the bench. The rooftop is why you come; the studio is the overture. IC train, 500 cash. Etiquette: sculpture studio = no flash on the life masks (they’re plaster, not stone), shoe-off at the genkan (socks), the rooftop railing is 1920s—don’t lean hard, the cemetery next door is active—no drone. Mistake: 13:00 August—rooftop glare, the studio a tour-file. 9:25 weekday, cypress line, is Asakura’s own plaster hour. Question: when a sculptor turns his own roof into a museum of his casts, is the view the art or the vanity?

If you want to experience an old Japanese town but don't want to travel far from Tokyo, Kamakura is a great choice. 🇯🇵🌊 This town is not far from Tokyo, making it an easy day trip, but its atmosphere is worlds apart from the city. From a metropolis full of skyscrapers and crowds, arriving in Kamakura introduces you to narrow streets, historic temples, wooden houses, sweet shops, cafes, and the nearby sea. Kamakura was once the political capital of Japan during the Kamakura period, leaving behind numerous ancient temples and shrines. Anyone who loves history, culture, or just taking a leisurely stroll will absolutely love it here. Importantly, this town isn't just about temples. It also features Kamakura Beach, the classic Enoden train, and seaside photo spots that make you feel like you've stepped right out of a Japanese movie. 🎞️ ⸻ 🏯 Must See Landmarks you shouldn't miss 🙏 Kōtoku-in – Great Buddha The Great Buddha of Kamakura (Daibutsu) is a must-see landmark. The massive bronze statue sits in the middle of the temple grounds. The surrounding atmosphere is peaceful, and it makes for stunning photos. 🌿 Hasedera A temple featuring a Japanese garden, ponds, a scenic viewpoint, and a massive statue of Kannon. There's plenty of space to stroll around, and you can even see the ocean from the hillside. ⛩️ Tsurugaoka Hachimangu The most important shrine in the heart of Kamakura. A long path leads from the main street to the shrine. The atmosphere is majestic with wide-open spaces, perfect for admiring the architecture and gardens. 🛍️ Komachi-dori Kamakura's popular eating and shopping street. It is packed with sweet shops, souvenirs, cafes, and local street food. It's so fun to walk through that it's easy to lose track of time. 🚃 Enoden This small train line has become one of the city's symbols. Riding past houses, historic districts, and catching glimpses of the ocean along the way offers a much more unique experience than a regular train ride. 🌊 Kamakura Beach If you want a change of pace from the old temples, take a walk towards the beach. The evening light is beautiful, and on a clear day, you might even catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji from certain spots along the coast. ⸻ 🍡 Must Eat Delicious foods you have to try 🍵 Matcha Sweets Kamakura has a ton of matcha dessert shops. From ice cream and mochi to parfaits and traditional Japanese sweets, they are perfect for enjoying on the go. 🍘 Senbei Freshly grilled Japanese rice crackers available in various flavors, including soy sauce and sweet options. They are easy to eat and make for great souvenirs. 🍠 Sweet Potatoes and Sweet Potato Treats Along the shopping streets, you'll often find sweet potato snacks to try. They are especially wonderful during chilly weather and go perfectly with a leisurely stroll. 🍜 Shirasu Don A rice bowl topped with shirasu, or whitebait, which is a famous local ingredient of the Shonan area. You can try them either raw or cooked. 🍡 Dango Skewered rice dumplings topped with sweet soy glaze or red bean paste. This classic Japanese sweet is ideal for a quick snack while wandering around. 🍦 Kamakura Ice Cream Matcha, milk, or fruit-flavored ice cream. It's incredibly refreshing on a hot day, especially after walking down Komachi-dori. ⸻ ✨ Must Do Experiences you shouldn't miss 🚃 Ride the Enoden No need to rush. Simply riding the train and enjoying the city views is a highlight in itself. 📸 Take Photos with the Seaside Train The area around Kamakura-kōkō-mae Station is a very popular spot, especially when the train passes by with the ocean in the background. 🌊 Stroll Along the Beach The weather is fantastic in the evening, making it perfect for a slow walk to watch the sunset. ⛩️ Pray and Explore the Temples Kamakura has many temples and shrines, but you don't need to visit them all. Picking 2–3 spots and taking your time is much more enjoyable. ☕ Stop by a Cafe There are many cafes in the old town, with several decorated in the style of traditional Japanese houses. They are great for resting your legs before continuing your walk. ⸻ 💡 First Trip Tips 🚆 It Works as a Day Trip If you're starting from Tokyo, Kamakura can easily be done as a one-day trip. But if you want to take your time, it's recommended to set aside around 7–9 hours. 👟 Wear Comfortable Shoes Many spots require walking, and some temples have stairs or steep slopes. Wearing shoes meant for long walks will make the trip much more enjoyable. ☀️ Start Your Day Early During the day, Komachi-dori and popular attractions get very crowded. Starting your trip early in the morning guarantees a more relaxed atmosphere. 🌸 Each Season Has Its Own Beauty Cherry blossoms in spring, the beach in summer, beautiful autumn leaves towards the end of the year, and crisp weather with fewer crowds in winter. ⸻ ❤️ Kamakura: A Small Town Packed with Different Vibes What makes Kamakura so fascinating is that in a single trip, you get to experience culture, nature, great food, and the sea. In the morning, explore the ancient temples. By late morning, snack your way down Komachi-dori. In the afternoon, ride the Enoden towards the coast, and wrap up your day watching the sunset by the sea. 🌅 There's no need to pack your itinerary tightly because Kamakura's charm lies in walking slowly, taking things in, and stopping by little shops along the way. If it's your First Trip to Japan and you have a free day outside of Tokyo, Kamakura is an incredibly easy town to plan a trip for, offering a distinctly different vibe from Tokyo. Old Town + Japanese Temples + Classic Train + The Sea = Kamakura 🇯🇵💙 ⸻

I stopped by while taking a stroll through the historic streets of Akizuki. This retro market is filled with old furniture, tableware, and vintage knick-knacks that evoke a wonderful sense of nostalgia—it's fun just to browse! There are so many rare finds you hardly ever see anymore, and I had a great time spotting things and thinking, "We used to have one of these at home!" The market perfectly complements Akizuki's atmospheric, traditional townscape. I realized that part of Akizuki's true charm lies not just in its main tourist attractions, but in making little detours like this along the way. I highly recommend checking it out if you love antiques, vintage tools, and retro goods. It's a great place to take your time and enjoy the thrill of treasure hunting ☺️
