Somerset Feels Like A Hidden Fairytale 🌺 — traveler post in Minehead

Somerset Feels Like A Hidden Fairytale 🌺

#underratedspots Somerset feels like the England people forget to talk about. The magic is in little streets, stone villages and places that still feel like a discovery. 📍 Frome Start at Catherine Hill and wander the independent shops. The High Pavement is a top rated food stop nearby. Exploring is free. 📍 Montacute Montacute House feels out of a period film. Adult entry is £15 without Gift Aid in 2026. The gardens are the photo moment. 📍 Burrow Mump Free to visit and one of those tiny Somerset spots that looks unreal at golden hour. It has Saxon, Norman and medieval history. 📍 Dunster Walk the medieval village, then head to Dunster Castle. Adult entry is £19 without Gift Aid and parking is £6.50 per car. 📍 Cheddar Gorge Go early for quieter gorge views. Day tickets start from £23.30 online. The cliffs are free to view, so the landscape is still free. 📸 Photo spots Catherine Hill, Montacute gardens, Burrow Mump summit, Dunster High Street and Cheddar. 🍴 Food Try The High Pavement in Frome or Full Moon Inn at Rudge. 💡 Go midweek, start early and drive between stops. Somerset is spread out, so don’t underestimate travel time. Which Somerset spot would you add? #mytraveldiary #citydaytours #myitinerary #travel #england #somerset #uktrip #naturalwonders

Minehead Beach | One of the most relaxing seaside towns in the UK with absolutely stunning sunsets! — traveler post in Minehead

Minehead Beach | One of the most relaxing seaside towns in the UK with absolutely stunning sunsets!

When it comes to UK beaches, many people immediately think of Brighton, but I personally prefer Minehead Beach in Somerset. This spot serves as the gateway to Exmoor National Park and is also one of the starting points for the South West Coast Path. Compared to popular bustling coastal cities, Minehead is much less commercialized and offers a profound sense of tranquility. The beach is incredibly vast; at low tide, a massive stretch of wet sand is exposed, perfectly reflecting the sky like a mesmerizing mirror. My favorite thing to do is take a stroll along the sand dunes, gazing out at the ocean while admiring the rows of quaint white cottages in the distance. The scenery is incredibly soothing. If you're into hiking, you can head straight into Exmoor National Park right from here, taking in the coastline, rolling meadows, and hillsides all at once. It's the perfect destination for a laid-back day trip. As evening approaches, the sun slowly dips below the horizon, transforming the sky from a brilliant blue to fiery hues of orange and red. Accompanied by the soothing sound of crashing waves and the gentle sea breeze, the atmosphere is truly healing. I'd take this peaceful vibe over a crowded tourist trap any day. 📍 Travel Tips · I recommend setting aside half a day to a full day for a leisurely walk along the coast. · The scenery is most spectacular an hour before sunset—perfect for photography. · You can easily hop onto the South West Coast Path while you're here; the coastal views are absolutely breathtaking. · If you're driving, there's plenty of parking nearby; if you're taking public transit, you can catch a train to Taunton and then transfer to a bus. Minehead might not be the most famous beach in the UK, but if you're looking to escape the crowds and experience the most natural British coastal scenery, it is absolutely worth a visit.

Exmoor National Park – Moorland Majesty & Wild Coasts of the South West — traveler post in Minehead

Exmoor National Park – Moorland Majesty & Wild Coasts of the South West

#mytraveldiary Ambience & Setting Exmoor spans about 693 km² of rustic moorland, wooded valleys, high ridges, and more than 55km of rugged coastline in North Devon and West Somerset. From the heights of Dunkery Beacon to the sea-sprayed cliffs, the scenery shifts often: heather-clad moors, ancient oak woodlands, tumbling rivers, hidden dunes. Light, weather, mist, and wind constantly reshape the feel—from brooding drama to soft pastoral peace. ⸻ Highlights · Dunkery Beacon – The highest point in Exmoor (519 m), offering sweeping views over moor, sea and sky. · The Coastline – Cliffs, coves, rocky headlands, coastal woodland with panoramic views; places like the Valley of Rocks, Porlock Weir. · Wildlife & Ponies – Free-roaming Exmoor ponies; red deer; rich birdlife; rare flowers and lichens in moors and woods. · Historic & Cultural Oddities – Ancient clapper bridge at Tarr Steps; small villages, stone churches; literary and mythic associations (e.g. Lorna Doone). · Moorland Trails & Coast Paths – Hundreds of kilometres of rights of way, from gentle strolls to challenging multi-day hikes. ⸻ Practical Info · Location: North Devon & West Somerset, South West England. · Size: ~ 692.8 km². · Best Time to Visit: Late spring to early autumn for milder weather and wildflower displays; can be atmospheric and beautiful in winter too but conditions tougher. · Access & Facilities: Several visitor centres (e.g. Lynmouth, Dunster, Dulverton), parking, defined trails, local villages with accommodation and food. Some remote parts require preparation (maps, supplies). ⸻ Why It’s Worth Visiting Exmoor offers a rare blend of sweeping moor, dramatic coast, small-scale human history, and untamed nature in one setting. Whether you want wild vistas, peaceful walks, wildlife sightings, or cultural depth (literature, history, geology), this park gives depth. For walkers especially, every turn offers contrast—from cliff top to river valley, dark woods to open heath. ⸻ Final Thoughts Bring strong footwear and layers. Weather changes fast—wind, rain, sun can all come in a day. If walking, start early to catch sunrise or softer light; for photography, clarity after rain or early morning mist is often magical. Allow time to linger in quieter areas; sometimes the quietest parts (wooded combes, hidden coves) leave the strongest impression.

Watchet Harbour Somerset — traveler post in Minehead

Watchet Harbour Somerset

#sailing boat ⛵ #steam train #sea shanties #staycation Watchet is generally considered worth visiting. It's a charming coastal town with a rich history and a variety of attractions. Watchet is a small but lively and picturesque harbour town (population around 4,000) situated on the Bristol Channel coast. It has a strong maritime history dating back 1,000 years, and as such has many stories connected with vikings, pirates, Romantic poets and sea shanties. The town offers scenic coastal views and is a good base for exploring the Exmoor National Park. Steam Trains: Watchet has a railway station with steam trains, adding to its heritage appeal. I love Watchet. It is a charming little coastal town with an active Marina, excellent holiday accommodation, an Old Port, quaint houses and shops. The picturesque village of Dunster is just a short distance away. Plenty of interesting places to visit the North Somerset area. The South West coast path starts in Minehead. Home of the famous Butlins holiday camp.

Minehead to Bishops Lydeard round trip journey — traveler post in Minehead

Minehead to Bishops Lydeard round trip journey

West Somerset Railway Longest independent railway in Britain (20 miles). Enjoy a relaxing trip back to the great days of steam. A trip down memory lane to relive an experience which our forebears took many years ago. My grandfather worked on the railway. He worked in the signal box pulling the levers for the Great Western Railway and in 1968 I was only a toddler when the last of these fine machines were taken out of active service. A great day out for all the family.

Dunster Castle was great 🇬🇧 — traveler post in Minehead

Dunster Castle was great 🇬🇧

#uktrip Visiting Dunster Castle in Minehead was like stepping back in time! 🏰 This stunning medieval fortress, perched on a hill, offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and the Bristol Channel. The entrance fee was around £14, which I found to be quite reasonable for everything it offered. As I walked through the ancient halls and explored the beautiful rooms filled with antique furniture and historic artifacts, I couldn't help but imagine the stories and lives of the people who lived here. The castle also has a lovely garden, which was perfect for a peaceful stroll 🌸🌳. One of the highlights was the picturesque watermill at the foot of the castle, still working and grinding flour today! It was fascinating to watch the mill in action and learn about its history. Nearby attractions include the charming village of Dunster itself, with its old-world charm, cobbled streets, and delightful tea rooms 🍰. If you’re feeling adventurous, the Exmoor National Park is also close by, offering great hiking trails and opportunities to see some of the UK’s best wildlife. #trip #DunsterCastle #MedievalHistory #TravelUK #CountrysideViews #ExploreExmoor

The British Museum

My visit to the British Museum was completely transformed by Diana's guide. She didn't just introduce the exhibits; she connected the scattered artifacts into a coherent narrative of world history. From the Rosetta Stone's code and the controversy surrounding the Parthenon reliefs, to the Mesopotamian cuneiform and the historical context behind Oriental porcelain, her explanations were engaging, logically sound, vivid, and insightful. Dry history was no longer just cold text; each artifact came alive with a vibrant background. Her pace was comfortable, and she patiently answered our diverse questions. Three hours was incredibly enriching. Highly recommended! If you want to truly understand the artifacts at the British Museum, you absolutely must see her!

Windsor Castle

Getting from London to Windsor by bus (702 green line) is very convenient, even without taking the train. Photography is prohibited inside the church and castle. Seeing Queen Mary's Toy House reminded me of the inspiration for many miniature landscape designs in China. I personally think it's well worth a visit. Buying tickets is also very convenient. If you want to see the Changing of the Guard ceremony, enter the castle around 1 PM to find a good spot.
