It's a bit off the beaten path between Rome and Florence, so it takes about two hours by train from either Rome or Florence. I stayed overnight on my way from Rome to Florence, and arrived in Assisi late in the afternoon, so I wasn't able to see much of the cathedral or other places. The reason is ~ this is the birthplace of the Catholic saint ~ San Francesco! Tourists visiting Assisi all come to the Basilica di San Francesco! The church was built on a small hill and was listed as a World Cultural Heritage in 2000. The location of this church was actually the place where criminals were executed before the 13th century, so it was also called "Hell Hill". Saint Francis chose to be buried here after his death, together with the criminals, so this hill is also called "Heaven Hill". The church consists of two parts: the upper church and the lower church.
