We traveled to Japan in the spring to admire the cherry blossoms, but unexpectedly ended up enjoying a strawberry feast as well. We initially bought some at a supermarket, and they were incredibly delicious, sweet, and fragrant. Then I read about a unique experience: picking and eating them straight from the vine. How do you find a farm like this? You can easily search for "strawberry farm" on Trip.com or Google Maps and pick one that suits you. However, I highly recommend booking a guided tour that combines strawberry picking with sightseeing—a perfect blend of tasty and educational! For instance, our tour from Osaka covered three amazing spots: · strawberry picking · the Buddhist temple Tsubosaka-dera (which is tricky to reach via public transport) · Mount Yoshino, home to 30,000 blooming cherry trees Our first stop was the strawberry farm. We were dropped off at a massive greenhouse, handed scissors and a small bag for the stems, and given 30 minutes. "Wait, don't we need to wash them?!" we asked. "No need, they're perfectly clean!" We wandered down the rows, happily sampling fragrant berries of various varieties. Have you ever entered a speed-eating contest? By the time we were completely stuffed, we realized only 15 minutes had passed! We could have headed back to the bus, but I love strawberries way too much to pass up the joy of roaming the rows and hunting for the biggest, ripest ones) The next stop was Tsubosaka-dera, one of Japan's most picturesque temples. The moment I saw a photo of the great seated Buddha immersed in a sea of blooming cherry blossoms, I knew we absolutely had to go! There's a local bus from the train station, but it runs sparingly—only once an hour. So taking a tour bus turned out to be the perfect solution. We were given an hour to explore. What makes this temple truly unique is its striking blend of Japanese and Indian architectural styles. Founded around 717 AD, it features several Indian-style Buddha statues, a Taj Mahal-inspired sanctuary, and white stone bas-reliefs; all this was gifted by India as a token of gratitude for the temple’s historic work in aiding leprosy patients. It is also renowned as a temple of healing. Legend has it that a local shaman unearthed a buried statue of Senju Kannon (the Thousand-Armed Goddess of Mercy), which granted him healing powers. After he cured the empress of an eye disease, she constructed the temple to express her gratitude. It is believed that the Senju Kannon, enshrined in the Octagonal Hall, continues to cure eye ailments to this day. We even spotted eyeglasses and cases left behind by visitors. I sincerely hope those people simply don't need them anymore. The third stop on our itinerary was the sacred Mount Yoshino. We were allotted two hours here, which was tragically nowhere near enough! Some folks missed the temple's fire ceremony, while others didn't have time to hike further up to catch the cherry blossoms in full bloom, as the trees at the lower elevations had already shed their petals. The rush is due to Japan's strict labor laws regarding drivers' working hours. Because of this, my top tip is to grab your belongings from the bus right away, give your guide a heads-up, and just stay behind to hike the mountain at your own pace, especially since it's beautifully illuminated in the evening. And trust me, there's plenty to see. The area is packed with ancient shrines and temples dating back over a thousand years. Come spring, many of them offer breathtaking views of the sakura. It's said that back in 1594, the legendary warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi and his 5,000-strong entourage stayed at Yoshimizu-jinja Shrine just for hanami (cherry blossom viewing). Kofukuji Temple This ancient temple dates back to the 7th century and is one of the Seven Major Ancient Temples of Nara. It used to be the family temple of the Fujiwara family, one of Japan's most influential families. It is notable for its five-story wooden pagoda and the National Treasure Museum, which exhibits exquisite Buddhist art. Nara Prefecture is where the Ritsuryo system began in ancient Japan. People have gathered here since ancient times, and it seems that it has given birth to many influential people, as there are many ancient tombs here. I watch the sunset from one of these, Takamatsuzuka Tomb. And so a day in Asuka comes to an end. I wonder if people 1,300 years ago were also watching sunsets like this.

Kofuku-ji Temple is actually a complex of Budist temples and pagodas. It's an exact replica of the original pagoda that Empress Komyo built here in AD 730, which burned to the ground. It is one of the most important religious and historical building in Nara nowadays. It is so convenient that this site was walking distance from the metro station, and also it is close to other places of interest. The huge pagoda will be easy to spot from a distance. The recommended sightseeing time is between one to two hours. The price of admission is quite cheap, I totally recommend this place to visit with your friends or even children. Nara's newly designated World Heritage site, "Archaeological Sites of Asuka-Fujiwara: Capitals of Ancient Japan and Related Properties," was added this July and includes over 20 locations across Sakurai, Kashihara, and Asuka. 🚲 There is a bike rental shop right outside Asuka Station. I highly recommend an electric bike, otherwise, you'll need the strength of a triathlete to handle the hills here. The rental shop is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. No deposit is required, and a standard bike costs just ¥900 for the day. 🚲 A 5-minute ride from the station brings you to: 📍 Takamatsuzuka Tomb. This is a mural tomb, though you can only see the exterior. You can view the murals at the small museum next door. Admission is ¥300. Continue riding for another 15 minutes to: 📍 Kitora Tomb and Shijin-kan Museum. Featuring ancient murals and the four mythical beasts, the museum here is free to visit. You can only see the exterior of the tomb itself. The next stop is a 30-minute ride away, with plenty of other ruins along the way where you can stop and take photos. 📍 Ishibutai Tomb. Get up close to this megalithic tomb from the Asuka period. This is my top recommendation. Admission is ¥500, and you can go inside to see the structure of the tomb. If you're traveling along Miyazaki’s scenic Nichinan Coast, Udo Jingu Shrine is an absolute must-see. This shrine boasts a truly unique location, with its main hall nestled inside a massive cave on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The contrast between the brilliant vermilion shrine and the deep blue sea is breathtaking, making the walk to the shrine just as enjoyable as the visit itself. ✨ ⛩️ Inside the Cave Sanctuary The main hall of Udo Jingu is located inside a sea cave (rock house) at the bottom of a steep flight of stairs. Stepping out of the bright sunlight into the quiet, mysterious atmosphere of the cave is a surreal experience. Known as a "Kudari-miya" (a shrine where you descend to enter), the path leading down to the main hall is one of its most striking features. 🌊 Coastal Scenery The path offers panoramic views of the Pacific, where you can watch the powerful waves crash against the jagged rocks. It’s not just a spiritual visit; it’s a beautiful coastal hike that showcases the best of the Nichinan Coast. 👋 Try Your Luck with "Undama" Tossing Udo Jingu is famous for "Undama-nage" (Lucky Ball Tossing). You take small, unglazed clay balls called "Undama" and try to throw them into a small hollow on the "Turtle Rock" at the base of the cliff. Tradition says men should throw with their right hand and women with their left. It’s surprisingly competitive and fun trying to land one in the target! 😊 🌈 A Magical Rainbow Surprise! During my visit, a massive rainbow appeared over the ocean. 🌈 Seeing the cliffside cave, the vermilion shrine, and the rainbow all at once was a truly unforgettable sight. These unexpected moments are what make traveling so special. 👟 Wear Comfortable Shoes There are plenty of stairs and stone paths, so I highly recommend wearing sneakers or comfortable walking shoes. It’s about a 10-15 minute walk from the parking lot, so give yourself plenty of time to explore at a relaxed pace. A Journey to the World Heritage Sites of Asuka Village I managed to pull it off as a day trip with Jetstar.

Gangoji is located in the Naramachi district of Nara City. As a prominent ancient temple of the Nara period, it is part of the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara" UNESCO World Heritage site. Its roots trace back to Hokoji (Asuka-dera) in the Asuka period. After the capital was moved to Heijo-kyo, it became Gangoji, serving as a pivotal institution in the history of Japanese Buddhism. 🏯 Key Highlights · Gokuraku-bo Main Hall: The most iconic structure of Gangoji, with surviving sections that preserve architecture from the Nara period. · Zen Room: Connected to the Main Hall, this is a significant remnant of ancient temple construction. · Ancient Roof Tiles: The roof is adorned with extremely old tiles, some of which are believed to date back to the Asuka period, giving them immense historical value. · Site of the Miniature Five-Story Pagoda: The temple was once much larger than it is today, serving as a major Buddhist center during the Nara period. · Naramachi: Gangoji is surrounded by the traditional Naramachi district, allowing visitors to explore the temple alongside historic streets and Machiya townhouses. One particularly interesting thing about Gangoji is its direct historical lineage from Asuka-dera: Asuka-dera (Hokoji) → Relocation to Heijo-kyo → Gangoji If Horyuji represents the peak of Asuka-period Buddhist architecture, then Gangoji can be seen as the historical witness to the continuation of Asuka Buddhism into the Nara period. ⚠️ I visited in 2023 when Nara was celebrating the 25th anniversary of six temples and shrines being designated as World Heritage sites. They issued a joint pass for Toshodai-ji, Yakushi-ji, Kasuga Taisha, Todai-ji, Gangoji, and Kofuku-ji, which came with some small gifts. The temples provided beautifully designed Sange (flower petal-shaped cards). At Kasuga Taisha, you could choose two out of four small gifts, including postcards, oil-blotting papers, and mini-folders. As for why Horyuji wasn't included—it's because they had already celebrated their 30th anniversary! 😜

When I travel, I make it a point to eat local specialties as much as possible. Plus, I want to enjoy them in a place with a great atmosphere! Being someone who is quite particular about food, here are the spots I visited in Nara that I’d love to share with you♪ 🦌 Horiuchi Fruit Farm, Nara Sanjo Store I fell in love with their fruit sandwich the moment I saw it in a guidebook. Finding one with figs is so rare! The figs were sweet and incredibly soft. I was in total bliss while biting into that luxurious fruit sandwich... 🩷 🦌 Yumeichi Chaya (Asuka Village) As soon as you head up to the restaurant on the second floor, you’re instantly soothed by the rustic atmosphere. The lunch I was looking forward to featured red rice that was perfectly chewy and amazing! The home-style side dishes had a comforting, delicious taste. Also, I had already decided on the melon parfait from the shop downstairs before I even arrived! Apparently, they use melons grown right there in Asuka Village. Since you can’t eat it inside the restaurant, I savored it outside while soaking up the heat. 🦌 Nordic Goods & Naramachi Cafe moi Exhausted from walking around Naramachi, I practically stumbled into this Nordic lifestyle shop. The cafe space is tiny, with only one or two tables, but you can feel the owner’s attention to detail in every single piece, from the tableware to the coasters—it’s just lovely♡ The "Hojicha Ice Cream + Jelly" I ordered was refreshing and delicious. The shaved ice used syrup that clearly seemed to be made from real melons! Even the extra syrup came in a tiny, adorable container 🩷 🦌 Kanakana This is a machiya (traditional townhouse) cafe I’d been dreaming of visiting since I first saw it in a guidebook. Just looking at the exterior got me so excited! As expected, it was crowded for Sunday lunch, so I put my name down and waited a bit, but my turn came surprisingly soon. Once inside, the space felt so open and airy! I thought it might have a formal atmosphere because it’s so famous, but the staff were warm and welcoming, which put me at ease 😊. The food was wonderful too! Everything from the plates to the stamp on the chopstick sleeves was just perfect 🩷. The agar jelly dessert was so cute that I even ended up ordering the walnut cake! The herb tea was lovely as well. I’d definitely want to stop by again when I come to Nara. However, this area is a bit of a trek, so I recommend taking a bus or a taxi. Just be sure to check the bus schedule, as they don’t run very often! You really should set aside plenty of time to explore Naramachi thoroughly!

A 130-yen vending hojicha (IC) from the Asuka Lawsons after. By 10:30 the school group arrived; at 8:55 the Buddha was the 7th century’s own silence. 45 min, 1,930 yen. IC train, cash bike + temple. Etiquette: temple = shoe-off (socks), 5-yen, two bows two claps one bow, the 609 AD copper is 1,400 years—no flash, the pencil lane is private farmland—stay on it, no drone (village ban). Mistake: 13:00 November—Asuka-dera a file, the honden a queue. 8:40 weekday, bell-ring, is Asuka’s own Buddha hour. Question: when Japan’s oldest Buddha sits in a village with no fence and a 300-yen gate, is the pilgrimage the history or the humility? 92. Dorogawa Onsen’s Hanaya Tokubei Local Cuisine Hanaya Tokubei (Dorogawa Onsen, Tenkawa, Nara) is the 1902 ryokan on the main lane, 3-min walk from the Kawayu bridge. From Shimoichi-guchi (Kintetsu, ~1,150 yen IC from Osaka Abenobashi) take the Nara Kotsu bus to Dorogawa (~1,150 yen IC/cash, last bus ~17:30). Lunch 11:30–14:00, reservation required for non-guests (call ahead), 2,500–3,500 yen cash for the full kaiseki (local amago trout, wild veg, tofu). Day-use bath separate 800 yen cash. I went 11:20 a.m. weekday: bus from Shimoichi-guchi 9:40, Dorogawa 10:50, walked the riverside (post 67) then to Hanaya Tokubei at 11:25—first lunch seating, reservation shown. Paid 3,000 cash for the trout kaiseki: grilled amago, mountain fern, tofu skin, pickles, rice. Ate in the 1902 dining room looking at the cedar wall. A 130-yen vending apple soda (IC) from the bus-stop kiosk after. By 12:30 the day-trippers filled the bath; at 11:25 the ryokan was the onsen’s own table hour. 2 hrs, ~3,130 yen. IC train+bus, cash-only at Tokubei. Etiquette: ryokan lunch = shoe-off slippers, don’t pour your own sake (staff does), the cedar wall is 1902—no touch, day-use bath 800 cash—towel rental extra, the lane is 1.5m—no roller bag. Mistake: 13:00 weekend—lunch full, no reservation turned away. 11:20 weekday, trout-grill, is Dorogawa’s own forest hour. Question: when a 1902 onsen ryokan serves 3,000-yen mountain kaiseki to people who rode a 1,150-yen bus for 70 minutes, is the meal the reward or the ransom? 93. Yatsuo’s Sloping Street Cinematic Empty Frame Yatsuo’s “cinematic frame” is the 600m Suwamachi slope viewed from the bottom looking up—the 19th-c plaster ochre walls, the 92 cedar steps, the telegraph poles, all compressed into one vertical. From JR Etchū-Yatsuo (~20 min from Toyama, ~330 yen IC), 15-min walk up. Free, 24h. The frame works 6:30–7:15 a.m. May–June (lateral wash) or 7:00–7:45 Jan–Feb (blue hour). No tripod—beanbag on the lower step. I went 6:25 a.m. May weekday (post 28/65 logic): off the 6:02, walked to the bottom of Suwamachi at 6:35, sat on the lowest step with a beanbag, framed the slope—the cedar steps repeated up, the ochre walls graded lighter, one shutter half-open at the top. A 130-yen vending black coffee (IC) from the station Lawsons. Shot 12 frames by 7:05, packed up before the first delivery dolly. The frame is the town as one image—no people, no sign, just the 19th century holding its breath. 45 min, 130 yen. IC train, IC vending. Imaicho’s Edo Storehouse Wall Pattern Walk Imaicho (Kashihara, Nara) preserves 48 Edo storehouses with white plaster namako walls and black-tile gables. From Kintetsu Yagi-Nishiguchi 7-min walk (~470 yen IC from Kintetsu Nara). The “pattern walk” is the 600m grid between Tsuneoka Shoyu (post 73) and Kawai Sake (post 22): the wall textures—namako diamond, kote-e plaster relief, the 19th-c roof tiles, the 1700s merchant doorframes. Free, 24h outer. I went 8:50 a.m. weekday: Yagi-Nishiguchi → Imai grid, walked the wall lane before Tsuneoka opened at 9:00. Stopped at 11 storehouses—one with a kote-e wave pattern, one with a repaired namako crack from 1927, one with the original 1780 door hinge. A 130-yen vending hojicha (IC) from the station side. Just a 10-minute walk from Kintetsu Asuka Station, you'll find two scrapped naval mines sitting in front of the Chokonhi (monument to loyal souls) on the north side of the former Sakaai Clinic. The grass was a bit overgrown on the day I visited, but it looks like it gets mowed regularly 🧐 The monument was erected in 1928 (Showa 3), a time when projects celebrating the enthronement of Emperor Showa were taking place all over the country. The monument itself was built as part of the former Sakaai Village's enthronement commemoration, and it seems the naval mines were brought in around the same time. Since Sakaai Village is entirely surrounded by mountains, the locals had very little connection to naval concepts or coastal defense. To help raise awareness and deepen their understanding, they reportedly requested the Navy to grant them naval mines and a 12cm artillery shell. The request was submitted in August, and the official directive from the Ministry of the Army to the Commander of the Kure Naval District was issued in November. Ultimately, two scrapped buoy naval mine canisters, previously stored by the Kure Naval Munitions Department, were granted to serve as fixtures for the monument. The mines are just over a meter in diameter. They're heavily rusted, but you can still clearly see every single rivet perfectly intact. It's absolutely terrifying to think that these things used to float in the ocean, ready to blow up on impact... 😰 Fun fact: The calligraphy on the monument was written by General Hyoe Ichinohe of the Imperial Japanese Army, a soldier originally from the Hirosaki Domain. He fought in the Satsuma Rebellion, the First Sino-Japanese War, and the Russo-Japanese War. Upstream of the Asuka River lies the shrine with the longest name in Japan. Its name is "Asukakawakaminiimasu Usutakihimenomikoto Shrine." That's a mouthful! 😇 It doesn't have a main sanctuary (honden); instead, Mount Nabuchi, located directly behind the worship hall (haiden), serves as its object of worship. As the name suggests, it enshrines the deity Usutakihimenomikoto. The shrine buildings are reached by climbing about 200 stone steps from the prefectural road along the river. 🚶♀️ Usutakihimenomikoto actually refers to "Tagitsuhime," the wife of Okuninushi-no-Mikoto and one of the Three Goddesses of Munakata. The deity's name roughly breaks down to "Usu" meaning splendid, and "Takihimenomikoto" meaning Tagitsuhime. ✍️ The shrine is also known as the place where Empress Kogyoku prayed for rain. According to legend, during a severe drought in 642, the Empress offered prayers here. Following a clap of thunder, heavy rain poured down continuously for five days. ☔️ This legend is believed to be the origin of the "Namode Dance," a rainmaking dance still preserved in various parts of Nara Prefecture. In Asuka Village, a local preservation society has restored the traditional dance associated with this shrine and occasionally holds public performances. On the shrine grounds, Emperor Ojin and Empress Jingu are enshrined on both sides of the large worship hall, alongside stone lanterns engraved with the characters for "Hachimangu." Behind the worship hall, there is a sacred barrier (kekkai) with a torii gate standing right in the middle. ⛩ Although it serves as the tutelary shrine (ujigami) for the four major districts of Inabuchi, Kayamori, Iritani, and Hata, the stone fence remains collapsed, and a building just below it has decayed so much that its original shape is unrecognizable. I wonder if rural depopulation is to blame. 🧐 Currently, the shrine is jointly managed by Asukaniimasu Shrine, where you can also receive its goshuin (shrine stamp). June 10 is Time Memorial Day in Japan. This anniversary was established in 1920, inspired by a record in the *Nihon Shoki* (Chronicles of Japan) stating that on this day in 671 (solar calendar), Emperor Tenji built Japan's very first water clock in the capital city of Otsu. 🕛 Interestingly, the same historical text mentions that 11 years prior, in 660, Prince Naka-no-Oe (who later became Emperor Tenji) constructed a clock tower to announce the time to the public. The "Asuka Mizuochi Ruins" in Asuka Village are believed to be the exact remains of this tower. ☝️ These ruins were unexpectedly discovered in 1972 during a survey for a new house. Subsequent excavations revealed it to be a large-scale structural remain with a highly unique design. Today, it proudly stands as a designated national historic site. When you visit, you can see the reconstructed foundation of the building. Experts estimate that a grand pavilion, supported by a framework of 24 pillars, once stood proudly on this very base. The time-keeping device used here was a type of water clock known as a "rokoku." Water tanks were arranged in a staircase-like structure, and time was read by measuring the depth of the water collecting in the bottom-most tank. 👀 The clever multi-tiered tank design was used to maintain a consistent water flow rate, countering changes in water pressure as the volume shifted. If you're curious, you can actually see a reconstructed model of this fascinating water clock at the Asuka Historical Museum! ✨️ The wooden planks running crisscross between the pillars on the restored foundation represent the exact locations of wooden and copper pipes used for water supply and drainage, which were unearthed during the excavation. The central stone area is where the main water-receiving tank was likely placed. Additionally, in the northwest corner of the ruins, you can observe parts of a rare "underground beam" construction technique. This involved placing foundation stones, filling the gaps with rocks, and tightly packing rammed earth on top to create a rock-solid base. This water clock tower is thought to have been established based on the concept of "controlling time," a political ideal adopted from China. The workshop is actually in the annex! It's connected to the main building, so you can head there without getting wet in the rain🤭 The room right past the gift shop is the workshop. There's also a restroom right next to it. The experience takes over an hour, so make sure to use the restroom before you start🚻 This time, we tried the magatama (curved jewel) making experience! The fee is just 400 yen! It's super affordable. The price makes it really easy to try out, right?😆 You shape it by carving a soft stone called soapstone. You can choose between a stone with the magatama shape drawn on it in pen, or a completely blank stone. As for colors, you can choose between a regular color and pink🤭 All the tools are provided, so you just put on an apron and quietly carve away. I went with the pink one with the lines drawn on it this time. I really just focused and carved along the lines. Once that's done, you refine the shape by beveling the edges. Eventually, you switch to sandpaper and keep sanding away! You keep finishing it up until you're completely satisfied with the result😚 At the very end, they attach a string to it, and it's done! If there are spots available, you can even sign up on the same day! This is a weekend-only experience plan, so if you're interested, I highly recommend making a reservation! Polishing is tough work, but if you put in the effort, your reflection will clearly It's affordable and doesn't take up too much time, so definitely give it a try for a great souvenir😊 making

You can enjoy this experience inside the Shijin no Yakata, Kitora Tumulus Mural Experience Museum! The address is 67 Abeyama, Asuka Village, Takaichi District, Nara Prefecture. Since this is a weekend-only activity, we highly recommend making a reservation if you're interested! Kitora Tumulus Mural Experience Hall: Shijin no Yakata Address: 67 Abeyama, Asuka Village, Takaichi-gun, Nara Admission: Free Hours: 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM Opened in 2016 right next to the Kitora Tumulus, this facility offers a fun and engaging way to learn about the ancient burial mound and its national treasure murals. It features a life-size replica of the stone chamber, which you can actually step inside on weekends when a guide is available. The interior of the replica is quite narrow, accommodating a maximum of about three people at a time. Inside, the Four Gods (Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, and Black Tortoise), an astronomical chart, the figures of the Chinese zodiac, and even the cracks in the plaster have been faithfully recreated. Even though it's a replica, seeing it was truly a moving experience. There are also videos of the initial discovery and exhibits covering the excavation process and Asuka-period culture. It’s hard to believe such an impressive exhibition is completely free of charge! They also have a stamp station, which makes for a great little souvenir ☺️

This is the Kitora Tumulus. Located in Asuka Village, Takaichi District, Nara Prefecture. It's about a 15-minute walk from Kintetsu Tsubosakayama Station. This ancient tomb in Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture, was built between the late 7th and early 8th centuries. Although it's a small circular mound, it's known as an incredibly important archaeological site in Japanese ancient history. The highlight here is the vibrantly colored murals painted inside the stone chamber. It depicts the "Four Deities" (Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, and Black Tortoise)—mythological guardian beasts of the four cardinal directions. It is famous for being the first discovery in Japan where all four deities remain intact. Additionally, several Chinese zodiac figures and a star chart were discovered here. The star chart on the ceiling is recognized as the oldest surviving example of its kind in East Asia. The person buried here has yet to be identified. The area in front of the tumulus is a park with benches, making it a great spot to relax and take your time. Right in front of the tomb, there are rubbing plates available. Just place a piece of paper over them and rub with a pencil to trace the Four Deities and some of the Chinese zodiac figures found in the Kitora Tumulus! 🤭 Highly recommended for history buffs! 😌 Sightseeing Travel
