The current location of the Philae Temple is a result of relocation. The original temple was nearly submerged due to the construction of a dam. Thanks to international efforts, the temple was dismantled piece by piece and meticulously reconstructed on its current island, preserving this precious heritage of ancient Egypt. We took a small boat to the temple, and from afar, we could see the grand columns emerging from the lake—a truly spectacular sight. Inside the temple, intricate carvings, hieroglyphs, and depictions of gods' stories can be admired. Every wall and column exudes the sacred atmosphere of ancient Egypt. Compared to other popular temples, Philae Temple is quieter and more serene. Other Egypt is tiring, but it's a place you can easily explore on your own. (Crime, such as pickpocketing, is rare.) Taxis are almost always InDrive. Uber drivers often ask for ridiculous amounts and force cash payments. ATMs generally work well. However, there are occasional issues with cash dispensers, so video recording is essential every time you withdraw money. International student ID cards offer half-price admission. Even if you don't have one, try it. When bargaining, always negotiate to at least half the asking price. For example, if someone asks for 100 pounds, offer 20 or 30 pounds. That way, you can get it for around 55 pounds, the mid-range price, and you'll be less likely to get ripped off. When haggling with taxi drivers, be prepared to haggle for an hour. Since we're the "lower-priced" vendors, they won't easily lower the price. The easiest places to shop are those with fixed prices. For reference, a 500ml bottle of water costs 3 pounds. Anything more expensive than that is considered a rip-off. There's a tipping culture, but honestly, it's okay not to tip. However, if the person provides excellent service, 20-50 pounds is acceptable. If they ask for more because they don't have enough, just say you're a student and don't have the money. 8. In Conclusion Egypt is one of my favorite travel destinations. Also, keep in mind that a lot of the information on YouTube is exaggerated. (I'm not saying you shouldn't be careful.) The road trip through Madaba, Mount Nebo, and Kerak Castle added layers of history before reaching Petra. Nothing compares to walking through the Siq and seeing the Treasury appear — simply breathtaking. A full day exploring tombs, temples, and the Monastery made Petra an absolute highlight. From there, we ventured into the Wadi Rum desert, where a jeep safari and Bedouin camp overnight under the stars was magical. Our final day in Jordan included the surreal experience of floating in the Dead Sea, followed by a relaxing evening in Amman. Egypt (Days 7–13): Flying to Cairo, we connected to an overnight train to Aswan, where we visited the serene Philae Temple and began our Nile cruise. The excursion to Abu Simbel was awe-inspiring, and sailing to Kom Ombo, Edfu, and Luxor revealed temple after temple of astonishing grandeur. Seeing Luxor Temple illuminated at night was especially memorable. The Valley of the Kings offered a chance to step into pharaohs’ tombs before we continued to Hurghada for a Red Sea break. A full day of snorkeling in crystal-clear waters was the perfect change of pace before returning to Cairo. Our trip concluded with the legendary Giza Pyramids and Sphinx, the Egyptian Museum’s treasures, and shopping at Khan El Khalili bazaar. Visiting the Nubian Eco Village was a unique cultural experience. I enjoyed exploring the colorful houses and local handicrafts, and learning about the traditional Nubian way of life 🌿. The atmosphere was relaxed and intimate, and I received a warm welcome from the locals who shared their stories and cultural experiences with me 🏡. The trip provided a great opportunity to experience traditional Nubian cuisine and learn about their traditions and daily customs 🌟. The Nubian civilization has a history dating back to 2000 BC and is situated in the Nile River Valley, encompassing regions of northern Sudan and southern Egypt. Today, modern Nubians primarily reside in the areas of Aswan and Kom Ombo. Traditionally, Nubian villages are found along the banks of the Nile River. However, in 1963, the completion of the High Dam under Abdel Nasser’s leadership led to the displacement of 135,000 Nubians from 44 villages. Sadly, many ancient Nubian monuments now lie submerged at the bottom of Lake Nasser. Some temples were rescued, thanks in part to the efforts of the “Nubian company” and UNESCO. Highly recommended is the Solaih Nubian Restaurant located on a small island opposite the Philae Temple. It's situated on an island where you can gaze at the Philae Temple from the restaurant. We went there around 4 PM, and there were no other customers yet, so we leisurely enjoyed the view! However, for those planning to visit, I suggest either going at noon or in the evening. After 5 PM, as the sun sets, the sky fills with swarms of little bugs... The food at the restaurant is delicious and affordable! Starters, drinks, and sides range from 20 to 50 Egyptian pounds, while main courses are between 100 to 200 Egyptian pounds. We had a big lunch and ate dinner too early, plus we underestimated the portions and accidentally ordered too much... We ordered 8 dishes + 4 drinks for less than 800 Egyptian pounds in total. The round-trip boat transfer to the dock for two people was only 150 Egyptian pounds. If we had ordered less, we probably could have been very full for just 500 Egyptian pounds. What really left an impression on me was the hour spent sitting by the campfire, chatting with Egyptian students. I felt their genuine enthusiasm and heartfelt welcome. Dancing to traditional music, I sensed their desire for the freedom of the soul. 🏰 Historic Feature - Aswan's Cultural Treasure Aswan is a historically rich city in southern Egypt, home to many impressive sites. The Aswan market reflects the local commercial vitality, while the Felucca sailboats are an ancient mode of transportation on the Nile. The Nubian villages are a treasure trove of ancient traditions, where locals inherit history through their unique way of life. This day in Aswan has deeply made me feel the unique charm of Egypt. 🌅✨ 2024.02.04 Day 4 - Philae Trip & Abu Simbel Miracle ✨🌅 Good morning, Egypt! Today’s itinerary is full of mystery and miracles. Let us explore the cultural treasures of Egypt together! 🇪🇬☀️ 🕗 7am - Temple of Philae Early in the morning, we arrived at the beautiful Nile River in Aswan to visit the Temple of Philae. This temple is regarded as a symbol of love and beauty. It was once faced with flooding due to the construction of the Aswan Reservoir and was later moved to Ajikya Island. This ancient temple is famous for its colorful reliefs and stone columns and is a treasure of Egyptian mythology and religion. We also felt how much Egyptians like taking photos with Asians. Every day when we went to the temple, we were constantly asked to take photos, and when we walked on the street. I even wondered if the Egyptians made bets with their friends on how many Asians they could take photos with every day! 🚗 09:00 - Head to Abu Simbel Next, we set off on our journey to the world-famous Abu Simbel. This magical place was built by the ancient Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses II in memory of himself and his queen. The most unique thing about the Abu Simbel temples is that in order to avoid being flooded by the reservoir, the entire temple was disassembled, moved to higher ground, and reassembled. After a 3.5-hour drive, we arrived at Abu Simbel Temple at 1pm. There were no group tourists when we arrived, and they were all individual tourists who chartered their own cars, so it was easy to take pictures of the empty scenery. We took a leisurely walk to the Abu Simbel Temples. This magnificent complex is known as the "Temple of the Sun", and twice a year the sun's rays shine through the temple halls, illuminating the faces of the deities. This is the pinnacle of ancient Egyptian architectural art. We also met YouTuber NeNe here, but I didn’t know who he was at first, I just knew he was Taiwanese, so we started chatting and strolling around together. We stayed until 3pm before I left. I was super hungry and hadn’t checked in yet, so we went to a nearby restaurant to eat and check in. 🏡 16:00 - Rest at B&B & lunch The homestay we stayed in this time was Abu Simbel Nubian Guest house. When we arrived, the owner's wife prepared a welcome drink, Roselle tea, for me to drink. When I entered the room, I smelled a fragrant scent and felt that the room was very clean. The whole space was very warm! Accommodation near Abu Simbel Temple is very expensive. Ordinary hotels cost about 3,600 to 5,000. If you want one that costs about 2,000, it is quite far from the temple and takes more than 30 minutes to walk. The B&B I booked is about 2,900$95 USD, about 15 minutes to walk from the temple. Although the toilet is not in the room, each room has its own bathroom. There is also a kitchen in the B&B, and the refrigerator is filled with fruits, drinks and water. Of course, they are all free to take. I really recommend it! I highly recommend everyone to stay here In addition to helping me buy tickets for the temple light show, the boss also exchanged currency with us (1:55) and drove us to the temple to watch the light show at night. It was super convenient! The key point is that the boss helped us arrange a chartered boat to watch the sunrise in front of the temple the next morning! This event really put a perfect end to our trip to Abu Simbel! 🍽 18:30 - Light show (about 40 minutes) When night falls, we head to the temple to enjoy the light show of Abu Simbel Temple. Every ray of light is poetic and picturesque, giving new life to this thousand-year-old temple. That’s what they say, but actually it seems like it doesn’t matter if you don’t watch this light show, because the content is a bit boring, plus the sound and light effects and images at the beginning are not very clear, and most importantly, the dubbing is in Chinese and it really distracts us! Because when we went there about half of the people were Chinese, so the film that day was dubbed in Chinese! However, the standard dubbing by Chinese voice actors gave the whole film a very strange atmosphere. I originally wanted to encourage everyone to go see this light show (because I don’t want to be the only one being fooled), but I still want to stop people from wasting their money! It is more practical to save your money and use it to take a boat and watch the sunrise! It was almost eight o'clock when we returned to the hotel in the evening. We ate the instant noodles and canned food we prepared to experience the Taiwanese flavor, hahahaha This day's journey made us deeply feel the profound history and cultural treasures of Egypt.
